Cambridge and Seawan is a weird Way media podcast. Oh hello and welcome to Cambridge and with Sean, a podcast by two weird guys about the weird things they like. This is a special exclusive exciting, I don't know, we're excited about this episode. Exclusive to anyone who cares to listen to Jules Henry Martin. Yes, yes, this one's for you, Jeules, that's right, which I guess we could just say about all of them, since he's the only person who listen to.
People are going to get tired of hearing us say that. Well, what else is new when they're tired of everything else. Apologies to those of you that do listen. I think Sean, who co hosts occasionally The Frenzy, I think he tunes in regularly. I think we'll do the same thing we did last time, go back and.
Forth, back and forth. Yeah, sure, why not. See how it goes. We're going to be talking about the things we've acquired for ourselves. Or for each other.
For each other too, because there's some gifts in here too. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, since August. From August too, I'm going to include early November because I just got something in the mail. Yeah, that's fine, include whatever the hell you want.
What do I care, fucking A I know what you've got. Well, I know a lot of it, because you know a lot. Of it, you too, know more than anybody. I wanted to open up with. The only thing I use Facebook for anymore is looking at past memories, which is slowly going to run out, since I don't really post much anymore except the occasional past memory in this time between our last recording and today.
It's funny when I look at that memories page and I see myself talking about the obsessions that I have talked about on our show. So for wild I don't know, it might have been September of However, many years ago, I started a trend of I posted about an obsession every day and it was like Alan Ormsby's Monster book. Yeah, Elephant Man, Houdini, Stretch Armstrong, all this stuff that I have used as fodder for this show, and it just kind of makes me chuckle every time one of those memories pops up. And like I said on the last episode, the Sugun Warrior stuff, during the summer months, it'll pop up because that's when I posted or got them. Was summer of twenty twelve up through like the spring of twenty thirteen, I was buying those, So those memories come up on occasion and I go through it all again.
I think the phrase for this is evergreen, right, yeh sure? The word for these things like there are everything that I'm going to be talking about today are They're part of evergreen ips like things that consistently are appealing to me. I have some new things, so we'll hit a little bit of both. That's exciting. I rarely venture into new territory.
There is one thing here, but it's still associated with an ip that I love. I'm excited to hear what you have. Well, hit us with your first thing. The first thing that I have here that i'd like to talk. And I don't think I mentioned this, but it is really on the cusp.
I think it was either late July or early August. Well, you know, I'll let you know if you already talked about it. I know you will. Did I mention Perseus from Pasha the Titans? I believe so okay, And see now it's been so long that could have been.
I don't know if I did. Maybe, I don't know if I did but I'm going to mention it today because I'm going to do it in categories. So I've got three things here that are in the three point seventy five inch scale that I am super excited to have as part of the collection that I got since late August. I'm pretty sure it was no late July. I'm pretty sure I got Perseus July.
Since early August, I have acquired three really cool three point seven five inch figures. I think I may have mentioned before that the Superman nineteen seventy eight three point seven five inch figures. I got all of those. The one that I was never able to find on the shelves was Lois Lane. Finally found Lois Lane on the shelf.
She looks like Margo Kidder. It's incredible, actually anymore at home? Like you? Not? Really, no, And I was getting nervous because these spin Master seven ninety nine three point seven five inch figures are going for like forty five dollars on eBay, which is of course a little insane to me.
I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because some parts of the country aren't getting them or whatever. But I am seeing them on the shelves occasionally. They do pop up, and I was really excited to get Margo Kidders Lois Lane and that completes that collection. And then on one of the trips to the antique stores with jewels, we had spotted the Perseus action figure and I went back and got Perseus and he's from the Clash of the Titans line. I think I'm good with Clash of the Titans unless I can find a Kraken for like forty bucks then, which will never happen.
You never know, that's true, You never know. I mean that Probe Droid, the Probot and hath set was really affordable, so you never know what's out there. And then I finally picked up a little he Man Super seven he Man reaction figure, which is inspired by the gift that you got me, and I was like, you know what, I'm unwilling to take these out of the box. They're so cool. And we'll get to that in a little bit when we talk about the gifts.
But so I wanted to get the regular release way one key Man reaction figure from Super seven, and he was finally available in the affordable price and I got him for like sixteen bucks. Cheaper than their reaction figures now exactly exactly, and for a while there. He was pretty icy zero seven, I know, super seven. That's the first thing I wanted to talk about with the additions to my collection that are in the three point seven to five inch scale coop. All right, well, I continue with my changeables purchasing.
Got one of the versions of a quarter pounder changeable, and that was the styrofoam box. Oh yeah, quarter pounder changeable, which I absolutely love, and it's the robot. I don't think they did a dinosaur version of the styrofoam box quarter pounder, but. I could be wrong. I have no idea.
I'm not an expert on changeables by any means. When you buy McDonald's Happy Meal, you can become the master changer. You'll get a food toy that changes into an amazing robot. So now I have three yeah, cheeseburger, Big Mac and this changeable. So that was I think right around the time we actually recorded way back then, and it was the in bag version and it was very cheap.
Of course, I ripped it out of the bag because I don't get a miss shit about that. I'm not going to keep something stupid like this in a bag. Enjoy it sitting right here. The colors are great on that pink and blue, purple and light blue and dark blue. Yeah, the lights kind of make it out look pink, but it's more of a purple fusia, I guess, yeah, fusia.
And you know it's a nice nostalgic styrofoam packaging, which we don't have anymore. Yeah, sometimes I miss that. Not that I miss styrofoam, but I right, I'm a big fan of styrofoam. I know I shouldn't be, but I do miss the old packaging. I do too.
And what's next for you? I think I'm gonna talk about the stuff that I got for my birthday in September quickly. I know in the last episode I talked about the James Bond books that Jewels sent my way for my birthday, and I know that I've posted this on my channel, but I do want to talk about how cool the birthday gifts are that you got me. The set of the Reaction Masters of the Universe figures that are based on prototypes. That's incredibly cool.
I absolutely love it so much. Another novel gift that you gave me was the Skeletor Japanese vinyl inspired figure. That is officially the first Japanese vinyl inspired item in my collection. So that's very cool that it's also Skeletor. The three little yellow dinosaurs that I did not mention in my video are right here on my desk.
They've been here ever since you gave him to me. So I love those. A quick nod to Steve and Tracy Rupel. Steve went through his personal collection that he found in his parents' house and he sent me his California Raisins collection, which are little PVC figures, and they're absolutely crazy and ridiculous. Those are the birthday things that I wanted to talk about today.
By the way, those Masters of the Universe figures are only on loan to you. I will be asking for them back. I always hated the California Raisins. Oh that's still in those fucking commercials and I hated them. That's so interesting.
I absolutely loved the commercials. You know, it's like doing all the things for me as a kid the Clay Nation. Yeah, I was already a fan of Will Vinton Studios, just as a super weird kid that I was. Yeah, it was exciting to me. He always struck me as appropriation or racist in a way.
Oh, it's there's certainly some its skirts a fine line. There's some racist elements for sure. Not that that's why I didn't like them as a kid, because it was just cheesy to me. Yeah, as I grew up, I was like, yeah, it seems kind of odd they were able to do this at a particular time in the early eighties where they were paying less attention to this stuff. But I think that if you watch the commercials now, and you can look them up on YouTube and watch them, you'll see that there's some cultural appropriation happening, and it's a little sad to see, and it definitely should be embarrassing.
As a child of the eighties, I'm happy to have these little weirdos as part of my collection. It's sort of a document of an bygone era. M A. R. Ex spells March world's largest toy maker.
Well, you mentioned the little plastic dinosaurs, and that's based on my list, and Ice was inspired by your Marx Disney things, because that plastic on those always reminds me of the plastic of these little cheap dime store dinosaur figures. I know Timmy makes them still or made them for a long time, but I don't know if that's what these originally were. I know I mentioned when you talked about those Marx figures, like I think they sold these at gas stations or like gave them away, you know, when you fill up your tank or whatever. And of course in gumball machines, and you could buy bags of them in stores and stuff. But that's funny, here's a petroleum product for buying your petroleum product.
We didn't have Sinclair and fro now back then. We do now. They were big on promotional items, as I actually have a blow up Sinclair Dino that I bought Cleo at the one on Black Slume. That's cool anyway. Again, one of the things that I would search for on eBay when it rolled around was little I didn't know the name of this specific one that I had as a kid that I absolutely was obsessed with, so I would just look up plastic dinosaurs and the old ones would up newer ones with Papa.
I could never find or figure out which one it was, but I believe this is the one I had as a kid. Shortly after our episode, I started looking them up, and of course they're sold in lots of however many two to twenty, so I would save them. Save a couple of different listings, and then I stumbled on one and I'm like, oh, that's definitely the one I had as a kid. And so then I looked up dinosaurs with spiny backs or whatever. I believe it's a dimetro dome.
Is the dinosaur that I had that I liked. So I found a listing for a lot of twelve it had Did I give you a dimetro dom. No, I have a stegosaurus, a tyrannosaurus, and whatever that thing is. It looks like a armadillo. Yeah.
I think there might be a red one of these as well. But I had the green one, and so it had a green one in the thing, and it had another one, and they were all looked in good shape. And it was I think five dollars or something for the Yeah rules. I understand, it's a lot of money. A lot we're gonna put there.
A lot. It's a little, it's a lot. I got those and it had some duplicates in yellow, which is not my favorite color. So I gave you those. Well, I like it but I do have some yellow ones too, but I really like the green and the reds.
Those are the ones that strike my fancy. I like yellow, and they're gonna look great eventually on my Simpson's shelf when I can have one. It's almost an exact match to the skin tone of the team Simpsons action figures. Yeah, so this is one that's like, well, I got the green guy that I had as a kid, so that obsession is satisfied. I'm not going to be buying any more little plastic dinosaurs anytime soon.
I mean, you mentioned Sinclair, and every time I dry it by a Sinclair gas station or go to Sinclair gas station to get gas. I know if I ever came across one of those fiberglass garantosauruses that was just on the side of the road or something, I know it would end up in the backyard. And I know I've mentioned it to my wife. I'm sorry that this might happen. But where are they going to go if Sinclair ever folds?
You know, like those dinosaurs are going to be in a junk yard somewhere. They're going to get snatched up fast, I hope, so people steal them. I'm going to be wanting one of those. They're amazing. Yeah, as soon as they started popping up, I was like, there's got to be merch for these, and so I look online and then I went into the store once and I was just like, I can't give me one of those blow up dudes.
Yeah, that's cool. For anybody that remembers Moldoramas, they always had a little Molderama thing of that figure. Oh that's cool wherever. I don't think it was at their gas stations, but in certain spots you can get a Molderama. I can't remember what the dinosaur's name is.
It has a name, Moldy really. The Sinclair dynast so's name is Dinah. How clever. What's next for you? So I've been having fun stopping in at Ross lately to see what kind of bargain toys I can get for anywhere between five and fifteen dollars, trying to stay in that range.
The last few trips to Ross have been pretty exciting actually, and something that I've noticed has begun to happen over there is that they are And also I stopped in at De D's the other day as well, and they're doing this too. They've gotten on the bandwagon. They've created basically adult collector sections and are trying harder to stock stuff that people our age might be interested in buying. I've been pretty fortunate the last few times I've found Frankenstein, the Neca Frankenstein, which I had been resisting buying. I couldn't resist the one that was based on the Remco figure and the Remco card back.
But this is just the traditional Frankenstein monster from the Universal movie line that they've done, these highly detailed figures based on the characters. I have Creature from the Black Lagoon, and now I got Frankenstein. I got him for fifteen bucks. That was pretty exciting. Fine, because they're usually thirty eight dollars or more and.
They'll fall apart in five years. That's the thing about Neca figures, the soft plastics that they use, especially for clothing and stuff like that, they have a tendency to get tacky and start to fall apart. Some of the newer ones have been a little more resilient, so maybe they've improved their plastics. This one is the one I was talking about at the beginning of the show. Yeah, there's like one item here that is a little bit outside of my normal enthusiastic pursuit of certain ips, but it is definitely aligned with Masters of the Universe.
I found at the Ross in Selma the Misfits Fiend Club action figure, and he is the exact proportions as Masters of the Universe, five inches, five points of articulation. I'm a big fan of the Misfits. I'm a fan of the Fiend, which is their mascot. This guy's pretty cool. I don't understand really the Pumpkins staff, but Halloween Halloween stuff.
That was a cool find and it's kind of a cool figure that looks kind of cool. And then also from Ross, I found this. I don't have anything. Oh wait, I guess this kind of fits also in the category of oddball outside of my normal IP. But this vilized Vinyl Gene Wilder.
Yeah, from Young Frankenstein and Halloween was last week. We watched Young Frankenstein and so that was cool. Some really cool things are popping up at Ross. Leave me those figures. I can't remember what that line is called.
Every time they pop up and I see them, I'm my god. Those are really kind of cool. But yeah, I just have never come across them and realize I always forget about them and I don't feel like ordering them online. And I'm in the same category. I had seen them online.
I thought my dad's a big fan of Seinfeld, so I've contemplated getting some of the Seinfeld characters for him. But they also every time I run across one of these, the images look like they're computer generated. So I'm always unsure about the quality of these figures. Yeah, yeah, they look like three D renderings, and I'm always like, are these the real things? Exact?
That's exactly it, And I've always been hesitant. I don't want to drop thirty bucks on a thing that comes back and sell crappy. I can say it now. I can vouch for the quality of these figures. It's solid vinyl, it's not hollow.
Yeah, the paint application is quality. It's pretty cool, and it's bigger than I thought it would be. It's like seven inches tall. I didn't realize they were that big either. Pretty neat neido.
Now when. Friend I watch you all through me wizarded Fried, he can do anything a fly school graduate. Luck may we go. Easy enough with a twist of my I doubt that magic ring is true. I've got there fast with my rentree.
Meanwhile, back at the bridge, hang in there due from this empty bank right here, watch delicious. Fries up here? All right, what's next on your list? Well, this is one of the new things new to me, at least within the last couple of years. Actually, we talked about this on the episode of your show where Dallas Pogue guested.
Oh yeah, so that was two years ago, and I don't think I was really familiar with this. Obviously had seen it as a kid, I'm sure, but it's not something that's stuck. So I have been speaking of Dallas Pogue, been watching his channel, rewatching because there's not a whole lot on there. I have probably rewatched most of his restoration videos, like a half a dozen times we last talked, I mean each one. I just keep rewatching them when I find myself with nothing to do.
One of the things that he is I'm not going to stay obsessed with but fascinated by is the Wizard of FRI's character from bo King when they tried to do a McDonaldland thing with a bunch of really weird characters, and the Wizard of Fries is this clunky Robot who mass reproduces French fries Wizard and so he's got a Tea Public page where he has he's making available all these old icons, these advertising designs and stuff. You know, they're not new creations of his, he's just retro fitting them for modern clothing. So I bought the Tea Public shirt a Wizard of the Fries that he had, and there's other ones on there, there's other people. It's just the same image. They all use the same image.
I think from glassware. There weren't a lot of Wizard of Fries products released back in the day. Yeah, so Wizard of Fries and I've been wearing it and will continue to wear it for our Burger Build episodes on your YouTube channel. That is my official Burger Build shirt. I keep trying to remember to wear my my Mortar Heads McDonald's logo shirt when we do that.
I forgot the last time. But yeah you did, Yeah you did. What am I going to do? I've just made a decision to sort of switch gears a little bit because of what you just brought up, and that is to talk a little bit about what I'm one of my most recent purchases. I always try to go to chronological order chrondological order with yeah, I'm going to chronological order or whatever that word is, krondological.
I have to talk about this now. I posted a video on my channel of this guy I found a custom on eBay for ten dollars perplexing price because it's super affordable. Basically, it probably cost the guy ten dollars to ship. It came from New York and it is a Masters of the Universe Burger King character invention by whoever made the custom. It was advertised as a as a Mexican bootleg, and I finally heard back from the guy that sold it to mean He said he advertised it like that because it came in a lot a lot when he bought some stuff from at a convention.
It's a custom, it's a custom. He's got Stinker's body. If you want to see images, folks, go to my video on YouTube. He's got Stinker's body and then some epoxy sculpt hands, a French fry sword and a Burger King head glued on. The artistry here is actually really good.
There's like a burger behind his neck that sculpted in and there's a Burger burger grilling on top on the top of his crown, so apparently this is also crazy too. When he responded to me, he told me that the seeds, the sesame seeds, were pasted onto the original mold individually as sesame seeds, not sculpted in like guy thought they were. So they're actual sesame seeds from the mold, and the French Fries sword is actually from real French Fries. I found out too in honor of you're mentioning Burger King and weird stuff from Burger King, I got his name is King berg or apparently, so. You know what I meant to look up I might know who did that.
I'm slowly realizing it was I watched that and as we're talking about it now, there's a guy up in Portland who does Vinyl toys who I know fairly well. I mean, at least he recognizes me when I run into him at conventions. He does weird stuff like that, So I need to go look through his blog and see if he ever did anything like that, or ask him. Yes, the artist find out I'd love to know who the artist is and talked to the artist about it. I'd rather know than not know.
When it comes to this stuff. It's a really cool piece. Yeah, it's interesting. It's ugly as hell, but it's interesting. It's scary, it's a little scary, but it didn't come with any curses, so that's good.
Yeah, you don't know. They take time sometimes sometimes. Well, you mentioned receiving birthday gifts, and I gave you your birthday gifts when we first met up for our Burger build back in September. Yeah, week before your birthday. Actually, no, no week after, sorry, I was thinking the twenty eighth.
That's Cleo's anyway, you had picked up some stuff along the way for me, or just picked up some extra things on accident, So you gifted me the ten inch funal top Frank and Berry, which we have mentioned previously. Hm. He's back on my shelf right now, looking pretty cool. Yeah, he's a good one. He's sitting with my those ice scream figures from Target last year.
And then you also had picked up a bunch of the what are these the McDonald aamb tins, you know, all of the junk in them. So you gave me a Birdie, a fry Friends Grimace, and a Mayor mccheese. That's what I looked through all of those with Cleo. She enjoyed them. Yeah, they're pretty cool.
The best stickers apologies because the best stickers came with the Hamburgler, because it came with a sticker of the Burger burger patch. Yeah. Yeah, that's all right. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.
Yeah, I have nightmares about getting out. Okay. And then you were in La and is that where you got the Planet of the Apes Bin Cooper? Uh? Yeah it was.
It was actually what is that Valencia? The Valencia target? So when you were in La and in that area you found the Ben Cooper Planet of the Apes Neca figure that I had mentioned in numerous times trying to find it local target. And you've grabbed that for me. That wasn't a gift.
I paid you for it, but you did pick it up for me. And he's sitting up there too. Very cool. I for some reason thought I had seen images of the masks off of these figures, but I guess I made that up in my own head. They do not come off.
They do not come off. That is true. It's really too bad too, because it would be amazing to put those masks on other figures and have fun with that. Is absolutely doable, like we talked about with the reaction thing, even more doable with these to have a little elastic strap not that hard, pull them off and swap them like you said or whatever. Or like I'm going to talk about with this figure too, Like I've got a Mattel Katra here and there's a mask on her that can come off.
Yeah, I don't know why. I don't know why. Anither're geared towards adult collectors, so they don't need any kind of child warning on them, So being a swallow hazard or whatever doesn't even apply to these because they're not sold as toys two children. Anyway. He's very cool though, for a toy that's as pricey as it is.
Yeah, you'd think that that would be an option. They do not come off, but it's a cool thing anyway. I just kept them in the box because the box isn't that big. Plus he's got a wonky leg so I don't even know if you would stand on his own. Oh yeah, and I don't think the legs are movable.
He's going to stay in his box. The box is really cool anyway, because it mimics the box of the actual costume. Yeah, I've been tempted by all those Ben Cooper figures. I still haven't run across the Creature from the Black Lagoon yet. I'm going to have a hard time passing that up if I ever see it.
The Halloween three set that they did, oh yeah, those aren't been Cooper figures, but it's the same kind of scale. It's the little kids and the costumes from Halloween three. That's one that still kind of yeah, pulls me in. It was pretty pricey to begin with though for three figure set. It's iconic though.
The set that I am looking forward to hoping to see, and I haven't pre ordered it or anything, but it'll be hard for me to resist if I see them in the store. That is the kiss Bencooper. Yeah, for Action figures, and now they're doing kind of like Super seven. They're doing their own Yeah, that weren't originally Action ben Cooper costumes. They're throwing in ips into that.
I'm making ben Cooper esque costumes for the figures out of that stuff, so it makes sense, which. Makes I was really excited to find this record at an antique store recently when the wife and I were out looking at things This is the Gene Simmons solo album AH, which I bought when you and I took a trip to Disneyland. I bought from a gas station on cassette and made us all listen to it. I still have no memory of that. Of course, I was in intestinal distress during that trip.
So also it's not a great record. The cover art is phenomenal, like just is an amazing portrait of Gene Simmons. It's incredible, it's iconic. It does all the things for me. But the record itself is not great.
There's a couple of pretty good songs on here, but the best one is the cover of when You Wish upon a Star? Oh God, like holy shit. That is like the Freely solo album considered the best. I think it is. I think it's the best one.
I would even say that Peter cris Is sole album is pretty good. R Ip. By the way, I know Rip. I have two copies of the Ace Freely one. On accident, I forgot that I had it, and I bought it.
I've done that before. Yeah, I prefer the Ace Freely one. The Peter Cris one's pretty good too, But I feel confident in saying that Paul Stanley's and Gene Simmons a. Bully Dad is both pretty Yeah. Yeah, that is interesting, leaders, quote unquote leaders of the band.
That was an exciting find. Yeah. I was more worried about shitting my pants in your car than I was about what was being played on them. Oh man, that's an awful feeling. I forgot that you were going through that during that trip.
M I TM I my friends. So, speaking of Dallas Pogue again, Dustin Crop's boy. Another thing that I don't know if I knew about this as a kid. Whenever I watch his videos and he's up against one of his display areas, oh yeah, I always look at the stuff in the background. And he has a box of cereal.
He used to collect vintage cereal boxes and one of them is a cereal called Grins and smiles and giggles and. Laughs and smiles and giggles and laughs. Yeah. I don't remember that cereal at all. Could be a regional, regional thing where it just wasn't popular here or even sold here, or whatever it could have been.
I don't know. I've seen the image before of the robot very much like the Wizard of Fries. I've seen that image of the box with that robot, and I think I thought it was a board game for the longest time whenever I would see it, because it was completely out of context and you can't really make out that they're cereal in this guy's dome. And you know now that I'm saying that it's very similar to the Wizard of Fries, who is also domed and has fries in the dome. So this robot has cereal in its dome and it vomits out cereal when anybody makes it laugh.
I love it. There isn't a whole lot out there. They did a lamp or something that you could buy or send in proofs of purchases for, but of course it's a cereal, so they had little cereal prices. There's a set of ramp walkers, so you know, I supposed to be able to, oh yeah, yeah, put this thing on an incline, mantle, hubble down. It doesn't work at all.
Of the characters and I believe this one is laughs. So these are the names of these executives or whatever that are in charge of the cereal and he's on top of a barrel for some reason. The other characters all have walkers too, but this one druck my fancy, so I got it. I don't know. Weird weird.
I mean, it's a. Great name for a cereal and they're just a little smiley, happy faces but odd, Yeah, really weird and weird robot things that these guys came up with. I love shit like that. Yeah, so grens and smiles and giggles and laughs. They need to bring that one back.
Man, did I talk to you about that? There is a skit on Key and Peel of the producers getting together and talking about making Gremlins two. I think we've talked about it on here briefly. That's how I imagine the fucked up weird things coming to fruition like that. You see corporations come up with almost like hallucinatory experience of just crazy weird ideas that probably most of the time non creatives are asking creatives to do.
The brilliance of that clip is that pretty much all of the things that they bring up or from the movie, all right, Actually, that's why it's so good. Hey, Gremlins two has been green lit, I mean three. Gremlins three has been greenlet. So they're aiming for a twenty twenty seven release. I'm excited.
What about a bat? You mean a gremla with leathery wings, just flying around, flip flopping, bust through a wall. Make a perfect batsymbol in the wall. Get outside, getting some wet concrete, Jump up on a building that just drying. Place like a gargoyl.
Where the moon we are cooking with gas? Now I love it. It's in the movie net. What's yo next than fool? My next thing is I'm just gonna go thematically here because I got three items Disney.
I'm a huge fan of Donald Duck. So, as you mentioned a little while ago, when the family and I were down in Los Angeles we visited. It was Ari La and I we went to Disneyland. I wasn't really stricken by any souvenirs except for these vinyl figures of the main characters. I wanted Donald Duck.
The only way I could get Donald Duck was by buying a pack of Goofy, Mickey, Minnie, Daisy and Donald. And I'd given up because I didn't want any of those other characters. I just wanted Donald because Donald was actually, in my opinion, the best skulpt too. Just as we were leaving the park. I saw Donald in a band and the super excited got Donald.
He's like twelve bucks, really cool Donald Vinyl figure. When I was at the antique store with jewels, I saw a Goofy collector's glass Goofy at Disneyland, and it's got a Coca Cola advertisement on the back. But Goofy is like wasted in a sleep, sitting down, wasted on coke, wasted on Coca Cola. He's sitting in the park because the castle is behind him, and he's like asleep on the ground. And I don't know, I might be headed into a Goofy phase because more recently, when I was at the antique store with jewels, I found this really weird Goofy Goofy, a Goofy Goofy and this toy I don't know.
I don't trust that it was made by Disney. Right, it's cheap rubber what would normally be kind of like a cake topper type of toy, but the paint job is really weird. Yeah, it's wonky looking. He's like a super bugged out eyes blitzed man. He's blitzed in both of these.
So maybe that's my new obsession. Is Stoned Goofy, wasted. Stoned Goofy collectibles. So those are my my Disney fines for the last few months. Wrong here and what's next on your list?
Well, this is technically my last item. Something we have talked about numerous times. I think we talked about this on the last regular episode the Count Chocula or the Monster Cereal Hanson Company crossover. I did finally snag a box of Count Chocula Target with the puppet version of him on it. I've been enjoying my you know what I'm going to say, my bowls of succulent cereal.
Any opportunity to get that clip in, I'm going to take it. Get it in there, shoculent trying ageh. I have refrained this year. I love the Muppet design guys, but I never made it out to Walmart ever since you told me that they were showing up at the Walmart. Haven't been to Walmart.
Haven't had a chance. This has been a Mark knows this. But it's been a really crazy couple of months and I never made it out to get the flocked Frank and Berry cereal box. I really wanted to get one. Yeah, I missed that opportunity.
I'm glad you got the cat choking. Hey, maybe a friendly listener here will find one for you and send it to you. That would be amazing from your show. So why not this hit us with your last one. Oh wait, I almost forgot about an item because I didn't write it on my list.
But it is very relevant to a couple of things we've already talked about today, as well as stuff we have talked about in the past. So I got this little book, Crazy Kids Food. That's amazing, vintage food graphics by Steve Rodin and Dan good Sell. It's a Tashin edition. Fancy art book publishers.
Can we just take a moment of appreciation for everything that Tashin does. That company is amazing. There's a bookstore in I think it's on the Santa Monica Promenade, or it used to be when Andy Davey, when I would go visit him in the nineties, if we made it over there, we would check out this art bookstore and it was just filled with Tashin editions. They're super expensive, so it was more of a just a browsing thing. But photography art, I mean, it was just crazy.
They have like a little tashiin store in one of the shopping areas like open shopping malls kind of near Ucla. I don't remember the name of the shopping mall, and this is going back to like two thousand and six or something, but I did get to walk through that little tiny tossing store and it was amazing. I love their large scale books. I can never afford them, but yeah, yeah, I love them well. And I think this book is twenty two years old now and I remember it.
I remember the cover very clearly, and it was probably way more than what I bought it for on Amazon recently. I got it for nineteen dollars. I mean it's a small book, but still there's stuff ain't cheap. So anyway, I have seen this, like I said in the past, and passed on it. I was thinking it came up because I was looking for grins and smiles and giggles and laughs stuff I talked about earlier, but there isn't an image of that in this book.
And I thought what was I looking for? Because it came up in a Google search for me, and I realized, oh, it was this stuff called Google which was a peanut butter spread in the mid se that was flavored like peanut butter and chocolate, peanut butter and peanut butter and whatever. Here comes Google crowd. I think I remember us eating that. I don't know, but I believe that's why this popped up.
I popped over to Amazon and I was like, oh, it's only nineteen bucks, I'm buying that. Plus one of the authors authors quote unquote, since there's like no words in this is Dan Goodsell, who I have mentioned on the show. He's the creator of Mister Toast. He's the guy that I found out about the walking Cutie Fruity Yep toys, and I've been online friends with him for years. And I'm like, oh, well, I need to find this other guy.
Then this Steve Rodin, because he obviously collects this stuff too. This is all stuff from their collection. And so I searched his name on Instagram and found a profile for him mainly a known as a musician. You should look him up actually, but apparently he passed away a couple of years ago. Oh and I was like, oh, shoot, well, I guess I'll still follow him since his page is still on here.
I got curious and looked him up. Did a Google search for him, and he's got a Wikipedia page and apparently his music was very interesting and well known or well known in certain arenas. But he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in twenty seventeen and died six years later. And that's fifty nine, which I am fast approaching. So scary stuff.
That's really only ten years away from me as well. It's just chock full of I mean, it's just pictures. The only real writing in it is the introduction by that guy, Steve Roaden. Of course, the start of licensing for food products began with Disney imagery. The first licensing to put on food aimed at kids were Disney characters.
Yeah, that makes sense. Point they realized, oh, well, we're paying for these licenses, why don't we just create our own stuff, And so there's a mixture in this book. It's a couple hundred pages and it's just nothing but pictures of graphics on food aimed at kids, Just the. Best imagery you can possibly imagine. My only disappointment with the book is that it seemed to lean towards early seventies and before that, so like a lot of the stuff that I would be super familiar with and appreciative of isn't really in there.
There's one image of a freaky cereal box. The monster Cereal guys aren't even in there. There's like one little page of a couple of hostess things, and so I believe that's because both these guys are a little bit older than I am. So that's what their interests lean towards. That makes sense.
Yeah, another connection to our episode. Guess who gets thanked at the back of the book. Is it Dallas? Yeah, that makes sense, probably because he donated some images of his own collection and stuff. Yeah, I mean, like I mentioned, he was a serial box collector.
For a long time. That's so cool. They do make it clear that it's all from their collection, but I'm sure that there's tons of people that are thanked on the page as well, but they probably helped, Yeah, source stuff for them, give them stuff for their collection. Well, that's cool. That was my final thing, and now you can hit us with your last one.
Last one is a big one. I've got it, sure it is. It's so what say. It's succulent. I don't want to know about that.
I have a few Masters figures, so I've been excited about the cartoon collection figures. So I was able to pick up a Whiplash, who's based on the cartoon version of Whiplash. I was able to pick up a Grizzre and this is one of my favorites. Actually, Leech is based on the Shira cartoon Leech, Caatra and Shadow. Weaver was able to find those the Cartoon Collection.
I was really trying to resist it. And when I see them, it's just hard to resist them because they do a really good job actually making these figures look like they looked in the cartoons, either he Man and the Masters of the Universe or Shira Princess of Power. And the last one here is the I did get a skeletor. There's this line of Master Verse figures that they're claiming that they are based on the vintage figures. It's called the Vintage Collection, but they are more detailed.
Yeah, you know, sure, they're doing everything that they can to like milk this ip for what it's worth. This skeletor has pretty much my favorite modern skeletor. Now, so that's pretty cool. You royal bub you know, I'm just going to have you royal boob clipped like every every five seconds right here, you. Have to do that.
And actually there is one extra last thing I almost forgot to mention. These McFarlane toys came out with these Batman Returns figures. Apparently they're very, very hard to find. I have not been able to find any of the other ones. There's a Christopher Walken one that's amazing, the Donald Trump of the Batman Returns movie essentially, but I was able to find Catwoman, and I was able to find Danny DeVito's so Michelle Peiper's Catwoman and Danny DeVito's Penguin, and they're both really amazing figures.
Usually don't advocate for buying action figures at the forty dollars price range. Oh they're thirty five oh each. But I love Batman Returns. I love the nineteen eighty nine Batman when it came out with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton. But for something about the period of time when Batman Returns came out, I was listening to Sonic Youth and Nirvana and discovering post punk for the first time, and that Susie Sue song that she teams up with Danny Elfman.
That song was on the radio a lot. Is this like Summer of ninety two or something. It just really resonated with me. I love that movie. I just watched it not too long ago, and I almost am willing to I mean, Batman eighty nine is fun and interesting and it's a good movie, and it changed a lot the landscape of superhero movies in a positive, somewhat positive way.
But Batman Returns is actually a really good, fun, weird movie in my opinion, and so I was stoked to find those figures too. That's really the official last stop on the acquisitions train. I love it. Following we were trowling plaster one time and it was had a curved surface. So I talked to this guy about plastering.
How do you trowl you know, get this stuff smooth like glass? He says, you got to trowl it, and so Jack and I just kept saying, you got to trowl it, you know, all day long trowling this thing, and finally got it pretty smooth. I do think we should talk about the burger build a little bit. This is a tasty burger, yeah, for sure, folks. If you've been watching over on my YouTube channel, we posted two parts of the Burger build that Mark and I have been doing.
We've been trying to partition off time to do this for a while. We set aside a day in September and then the day in October were where we were able to both work on these. Mark you can speak to this too. We're both really inspired by what Dallas Pogue has been doing over on his channel, fixing up these fiberglass McDonald land characters fixtures, and Mark and I decided we were going to do replicas of the Burger Patch hamburgers, the anthropomorphic hamburgers that have bulging eyeballs, and make some so using the what I call the set making techniques that I adapted for my playset builds. We use some of those same materials, which is styrofoam, air, dry clay, and started making hamburgers.
Mark is further along with his He's already gotten to the point where he's he's primed primed, thank you. I'm still trying to get around to finishing up my eyeballs and then prime mime. I've been having a blast at this. It's been so much fun making. When we got together in September, I think I was there from what like eight thirty to two or something.
Yeah. Yeah, each step has. Taken longer, I think than either of us anticipated. But that was mainly the sculpturing of the foam into the burner shape. And then we did the air dry clay on mine because kind of realize we're not going to be able to do both since you were the only one rolling out the clay, and so we focused on mine and got that one covered and then realized, this is as far as you know, four hours, five hours into this, we're running out of time here.
We went to Wilkins, which has been brought up on the show yep, so that's in the video as well. You can check that out. I left mine there because it really wasn't much I could do at home. I guess I could have sanded what I had, but it wouldn't have made much difference. So we got together the second time.
I had been trying to think of something other than the air dry clay that we could put on there to facilitate the smoothing out of these because when I look at that picture of mine at the end of that first day, I was like, man, that was lumpy as hell. And when I look at what I have now it's as smooth as butter. You gotta trawl it. Air dry clay takes a while to dry, even in hot weather, especially at the quantity that we were using. Yeah.
Yeah, we couldn't do any of that that day, any of the sanding or anything. But I'm like, there's got to be something that goes on easier and dries quicker. And realized, well, that's what spackle is. You can sand spackle, you can paint spackle, et cetera, et cetera. You can apply spackle very easily, and it sort of imitates what Dallas does on his restorations when he has to patch things.
He uses bondo and glazing putty. But I knew neither of us wanted to mess with like a two part thing that hardens, and I bought us both little jar of DAP spackle that worked really well. I know you like the air dry clay, but I realized as I was sanding, and also realized when I primed these that the DAP takes to standing and painting much better than air dry clay. So every spot of mine that had DAP on it was ten times smoother than the exposed air dry clay parts. And that first layer of prime, I could see the little pilling of the air dry clay and where the DAP was was totally smooth.
You gotta trawl it. I mean I did a lot of work since taking it home. After our second thing, I applied tons of DAP and then realized, oh, much like the air dry clay, I can manipulate this even after it dries with a wet finger and smooth out parts that weren't as smooth to begin with. It's pretty easy to work with and I really enjoyed. Not that I would suggest using that completely, but I think on top of air dry clay.
You definitely need a solid foundation for the DAP because when you were experimenting that day, that second day, I try to puying the DAPT directly to the styrofoam, and it doesn't have the same kind of thickness that the air dry clay has, so it would just soak in. So for the folks that want to do this on their own, I highly recommend starting with a base layer of air dry clay, but marks or plaster, sigget or plaster, but even plaster is going to be harder to treat, almost like fondant. What you put on cakes, and that's kind of the air dry clay roll. Without the DAPT though that Mark suggested it would have been a lot harder to get the air dry clay smooth. So for sure that DAP really helped with that second stage of air quote plastering your burger is looking great.
For folks that watch my YouTube channel, you already know this probably that I'm also at the same time, I've been commissioned to make a miniature matter horn, so I've been working on that. It's been harder for me to get to the stage where Mark is with his burger, but I'm almost there. I just got to finish my eyeballs and then get it sanded and then prime it, and then the next part we're going to do is going to. Be painting these things. Yes, I'm excited.
I'm taking a little bit further than you I think, because I'm going to be potting this as a plant. I've got a little stand he's going to stand on. I'm going to secure him to a large pot and have some fake plants sort of billowing out underneath him so he looks like he's emerging out of a plant. I'm excited about that. And I'm just gonna shove mine on a shelf.
And that's great too. You mentioned Dallas again and the restoration and fabrication of the I think the thing that really got me wanting to actually make a burger were the I'm not sure which one came first. Well, he miniaturized the Mayor machief for the Fisher price like figures, and he also started to do a reproduction in the small scale of the burger patch and he has all these tiny little burgers, and I'm like, I need those tiny little burgers. Yeah. That's when I was like, oh, wait, we could make one tiny one, but we could make a burger.
And then he also is doing these small like maybe three inch maybe four inch diameter burgers for somebody in Japan. He's like making them for him and that guy sells them exclusively in Japan, and that little burger really was like, oh I need that, yeah in some scale. For me, that was the real inspiration is like the actual little burgers he was making. But yeah, what we're using as a model are the burger Patch burgers. Yeah.
It's hard for me to leave it alone, Like what more can I do? I don't have anything else. To do to it now except give it a final standing. I worked on it and like fiddled with it forever, and I'm like, I could just keep doing this. I could just keep finding every little pinhole and filling it in and standing that.
And that's why I went ahead and bought primer so that I would stop doing that. I'm like, I need to stop messing with it so to paint it so that I can't really do much else but sand. The sand is really at this point just so that the next layer paint sticks. I think you've really kind of taken to this. Well, we're going to talk about that afterward.
We won't bore you people with this, but we're going to talk about that. Mark's been shooting footage too, so the footage that he has of the final stages where he's priming it and getting it ready for priming, that footage will be in Part three, along with the additional footage that I've done on my side, and then we'll add that into the painting. Yeah, I just filmed a little bit of the priming. I'm not going to I applied four layers of primer, mainly because I switched from gray to white. Also, stuff landed on it when I was priming outside one day, got a little messed up, so one of my layers was basically ruined.
But anyway that happens. Also, it should be noted that fans of Mark should watch part two in particular, because he really gets a lot of screen time in that episode. Fans of Mark, quote unquote. You have fans out there, Sure, I'm one. I enjoyed editing that video, watching you talk.
I haven't shot anything else or done any talking, but yeah, so Burger Baild go check it out. It was linked in our little very special episode last time, and I'll link it in these two episodes as well. Watch them watch it. I think that's it all right, friends, thanks for listening. Remember until we meet again, have fun, stay weird, and keep collecting.
If you know what's good. For you, And who knows what December brings, you'll just have to stick around to find out. I don't know what we're doing. We'll see you next month, possibly, and we want to take another break. Mark wants to take a break.
He's had enough of me. You gotta trawl it, Josh. I'm gonna have to tell them about my weirdness. I'm sorry. Josh Cambridge immer Seawan is a weirding Way media podcast m
