Welcome back, Midnight for you is to Father Malone's weekly round up. I am Father Malone L and the Kryptonian beside me is Ripley Gene L. And we're back to talk the latest in heroes and idiocy. How is everybody? I hope you're super This is Supergirl.
Here's the thing. My cousin and I have very different ideas what it means to be a hero. He sees the good neighbor room, and I see the truth. The brickens brought destruction. Keep every comer of the universe.
The galaxy must be defended. You cannot give upon me. That it was a party that might be a problem. Why. I know it's pretty colorful, but that's just so everyone knows we're good.
I'm going to tell you something. Only one of you is going to make you talk about it. We have been form the introduced. It's good. What can I tell you?
Two for two DC fairgo y'all? Is it anything approaching the dizzying heights that Marvel's managed? Absolutely not. DC is too early in its infancy for that kind of sublime. But this is a more assured stab than even Superman.
I was never the biggest fan of James gunn at Marvel, a little too self satisfied and quick to take the Quirkmeister Mantle. It's not even the first sci fi film with the contemporary and by contemporary I mean oldies soundtrack. Those Guardian films weren't exactly a wash in current culture. I was nonplussed when I heard he got the Kevin Figie gig at DC. At that point, give it the fucking Anyone but Zack Snyder or whoever the fuck was stumbling around throwing switches wildly in a billion dollar potential franchise machine.
So naturally I became his most ardent defender when those same hordes started lining up in opposition to the fresh fun approach he was taking to what is already a baked in darkness factory. God forbid we enjoy these films. I thought Superman was breezy and inspiring, exactly what I want from the boy scout with Supergirl, though I didn't know what to expect. Quite frankly, the most recent innervation was in that Flash movie with Sasha Cally as a spandex brunette Carra Zorrel, who I loved, by the way, I hated most of that universe, but she was cool, and I understand the decision to not carry actors from one universe to another fresh start Hellobo Before her, though, there was an endless line of bubbly can do blonds with Melissa Benowist and Laura van der Voord on Smallville, and of course the Supergirl prime Helen Slater in that very interesting film directed by jennou Zwark.
Zwark shout out everybody, we had a hint at the end of Superman what we were going to get with a bumbling, drunken party girl version of the Girl of Steel. And because James Gunn is nothing if not effusive when it comes to shouting out the film's inspirations and authors, in this case, Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow was the inspiration by Tom King and Bil quiz Evley. This was going to be a superflick, unlike not only any other Supergirl property, but any DC property at all. Really, anytime before we'd gone cosmic, it was always so myopic, narrowed down to a single planet, maybe a moon if we're lucky. But this Supergirl is part of a wider universe, and that universe is alive and vibrant and stacked in every direction with a menagerie of old d C stalwarts.
Look, the movie has problems. I really enjoyed it, and I think it's actually better than Superman, but there's some undeniable problems, and right at the start is where it starts. I really liked how Superman began with Superman in a fight, and he'd been added a while same way I admired Batman eighty nine for not starting with Bruce Wayne being forged into the dark night, but Batman preventing that from recurring. Ordinarily, in Origin Flix, you're pulling your hair out for the first act waiting for them to be the character that's been advertised in the title, and they certainly get to it here, with Kara celebrating her twenty third birthday with Crypto on a system with a red sun, thus robbing her of her powers and allowing her the full effects of intoxication.
By the way, I really like that every time we go to a new world, it lists its name and what type of sun dominates the system. And that first act is mostly fun, but it demonstrates a potential subtitle for the film Supergirl, or Let's show you all the ways a Kryptonian can be engaged in battle, and it'd still be in some way fucking even, because let's face it, that's always been Superman's problem, and it extends to anyone from Krypton. They're simply too fucking powerful. And that's fine when it's a story of two titans punching the shit out of each other over a city skyline. But if you want that character in any kind of adventure, you have to depower them immediately.
Imagine Superman in a detective story, shaking down the criminal element. It'd be a two page story. So we meet fucked up Kara, partying off world and trying not to get into anyone else's business or become the savior of anyone seeking one out, which is of course what happens when our villain Matthias Schoen arts. I didn't pronounce that correctly, and I'm not even gonna try. As Krem of the Yellow Hills, I had to look up both those names.
He shows up to steal young women from I'm the local populace for slave trade. In the ensuing melee, a family has wiped out save for one sword wielding girl, and Crypto is waylaid with a slow acting poison and then Kram makes off with Kara's ship, stranding her. So by circumstance we've got a buddy questflick. Excellent, except I don't really know Kara except for a bunch of spoiled and or troubled party girl antics. They're going for antihero and they're getting irksome.
And the other girl Ruthie played by Eve Ridley. I had to look up both those names as well. In fact, if I didn't recognize someone from the comic, I had no idea of their name. For most of the running time, she's basically every revenge cliche in any media, leaving the film not a lot to grab onto emotionally other than the dog situation, And can I say I love the idea of Crypto, and he certainly animated beautifully, but a little goes a long way. I didn't wish him poisoned, but I'm glad he's not in most of the film.
Threaded throughout on a similar mission is d C's favorite biker Lobo. Look, if anyone from the Snyder verse was going to make the leap, It's Momoa as a Lobo. He just is that guy. So that I found myself really enjoying Lobo again for the first time since like the nineties, he is a fucking hoot here and used just enough that he doesn't overwhelm or overstay his welcome and threaded throughout are Kara's memories of her life leading up to her current situation. Through flashback and sometimes dialogue, were given her life in Argo City.
So, for you non nerds, part of Krypton broke off and was protected and continued floating through space, but because it was basically one giant chunk of Kryptonite as they approached Yellow Sun, her parents sent her to join her cousin on Earth. These scenes are fucking heartbreaking. It's another view of that oft told story of the Kryptonian cataclysm in Clark's Journey to Earth, except Kara grew up there and knew everyone in the city and then watched them slowly poisoned before being launched off to Earth by herself. And those scenes are even better when she gets to Earth with her trying to find some solace in her comfortable exile. And I'm talking about it in such a detail because it's how the movie should have begun.
I mentioned there were problems, and that's a huge one. Just because we got sick of Origin movies doesn't mean that that ultimately ain't a broken way of telling a story. As is. They add retroactive residence and gravity to the early scenes. But given how much we're on the go during this film, juggling planets and characters and aliens of plenty, it would have been a nice grounding, as much as you can ground something that starts with a planet exploding.
I do think it would have smoothed everything over and allowed everything to flow quite nicely. That's a minor problem, though. The real problem here is, of course, the same fucking problem Marvel had over and over again, including for mister Gunn, the villain problem. Krem is a formidable character in what he does. It's just that the actor god bless has a zero presence.
I run down his filmography and I confess to being woefully deficient in having seen basically anything else he's done. And I bet he's fantastic, but he's awful here. He's like the fifth Ravager from the right, Like they considered this guy and went no, taser face is a better choice. I know I'm mixing the universes here, but hopefully you get what I'm saying because not only does our main villain feel that important, but Matthew s I'm gonna call him that so I don't mangle his Flemish heritage. He has the weight of a secondary villain in a mid to late nineties French independent film, something Matthew Kassiovitz would have written and starred in.
And here's the thing. The character is really sinister. He's a pirate and human trafficker who wantonly slaughters adults and children alike. But he's played as kind of a goof, and they've decided rather than give him any actual depth or backstory, they just give him some quirks. So, like Brad Pitt in Ocean's Eleven, he's constantly eating or talking about eating.
What's that mean? Does it go anywhere? Does it add anything? No, not one fucking thing. He is a gaping hole at the heart of the film.
Unfortunately, and let me just say here, since I'm listing things that I found unpalatable, that this movie was completely marketed incorrectly. It's one of those situations where people of a certain age in this case my age, are now controlling content. So we get so much of the nostalgic music of those people, my people's past. This movie was advertised with Walt to Wall Blondie's Call Me. Now.
First of all, that's a song from another film, so don't do that. Secondly, it's not evoking Guardians in the way that they want, because try as they might to convince us with all the choppy cuts to a quick beat, this movie was never going to be Guardians, which is a benefit, by the way. And finally, the song does not appear in the fucking movie. Contemporary songs appear in the film because this is about a twenty three year old girl, so that's as it should be. But then none of those tunes are gonna lure nerds of my vintage out of their moldering dens into the cinemas.
Okay, so, faulty structure, terrible antagonists, what's it do right? Everything else? I know. I'm always bagging on about having a few, or at least one poetic moment, a splash page in comic terms, that feels beautiful and outside the film, outside the plot, just a character moment, beautifully realized. This movie is walled to fucking wall with them.
In this case, the sense of wonder and sorrow and a rush of adrenaline. Craig Gillespie delivers over and over again, as are these few sequences alone would have had me crowing about his talent. But the fact is this is a film that takes place in entirely new environments, several as a matter of fact, and each feels considered and beautifully meticulously presented. You want practical aliens, We've got a fuckload to contend with. You want Seth Rogan as a tiny intergalactic mus driver done.
Millie Alcock is fantastic as Cairozorel. By the way, the first time we've gotten a girl and not a woman being dismissively labeled a girl. She was a force on House of the Dragon, and this softer, confused and sometimes righteous portrayal is shockingly good. And on a personal note, I had no idea I had an inch to see a tiny girl just fucking wrecking dudes with one punch over and over, but I did, and oh how I loved it. The fight scenes here are way better than Superman.
You know that shot. James Gunn keeps trying to perfect the big battle scene from one take, usually focused on one or two objects at a time, they get it absolutely right here with well, I can't actually say because I don't want to spoil any portion of the film, and it'll get spoiled because no one's going to see it, which might be due to the outpouring of the usual snyderbro bullshit, the unwarranted and unasked form bashing of our lead because she didn't fit their juvenile, masturbatory definition of a hot supergirl. I didn't hear anyone crying that the polkaont Man was being portrayed by a living ghoul. But that was when there was still hope that Snyder might make his triumphant return. Oh, Snyder, deliver us.
My favorite part of this whole new wave of toxic bullshit is the response from Warner Brothers. It's a type of pearl clutching and shock and dismay. We didn't know this kind of response was possible. What what the fuck are you idiots talking about? You made this creature, They screamed.
They wanted, and they wanted and they wanted, and in a bid to make more money or bump up the subscribers to their new streaming service, they gave in. They gave them everything they wanted. And they legitimized these fucking losers and their cry baby demands. We're shocked at this kind of response. Get fucked.
We're dealing with these nickheads all the time. Own up Warner Brothers. Now, having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed Supergirl, I want to see it again. I'm recommending you spend money on it. It's that good.
Maybe pay it home when it's available, but it should be supported. The DC is on the right path. I'm very curious about the upcoming clay Face and after that, what are we getting more Superman? But I suspect it's gonna be a big old team up on that one. The other flick I saw this week also features a bunch of legendary comic book characters.
Reminder, the stunts in this movie were performed by professionals. I'm Wee Man, I'm barrymar Jerrold. I'm Preston Lacy, I'm Chris ponire So for your safety and the protection of those around you, agree. With England Danger. I'm Steve, I'm Ryan.
Do not attempt any of the stunts you have just seen. Oh I'm Johnny Knoxville. Oh, I'm Johnny Knoxville. Who I'm Johnny Knoxville. Welcome to Jack.
Welcome to the first day of our last film. What you're feeling, I'm sad. Does it make you sad? Chris? No, I'm not in touch with my emotions.
I would like to introduce you to our new cast member. Larry. Prays dares to meet you all, big fans. Oh my gosh, you give me a brook in water so I can throw it on Larry. Twenty five years and we haven't learned a goddamn play.
Can someone go get the shot collar for your penis? Hooopy said, he wants to try it. Hi. I'm pretty you're taking it to a whole other level. Yeh, look pretty happy about it.
He's gonna be down. You gotta be good bye. This is the escape room from Hell. Start the game. I think we're moving to the next room.
You can gonna be dummy, you gotta be. You got it in the strum. It's pretty good where you are going to be making history today with the first robot crosstate exam. Is what Jackass looks like? Fifty Do you see the finger on that thing?
That's not a finger, it's a claw. Jackass was a revelation when it premiered. I know it's not everyone's tastes, and I know it can be fucking disgusting at times, but this group of young idiots seemingly out there just doing dumb stuff and injuring themselves needlessly. We're a wildly necessary take on mod life. I am not even joking, not even a little.
These guys came along and transformed the utterly mundane aspects of our daily existence into an adventure. And it's no wonder the symbol they keep coming back to is the shopping cart. Who hasn'tentangled with them? We rode the best toddlers, We were dying to drive them as children, and no doubt did a bit of riding in them as teens before accepting our fate as adults. Just simply trying to find one with all four working wheels.
But what's wrong with turning it into a death chariot, launching yourself into the carefully manicured shrubbery designed along with the cart itself to move you in one direction? Consumption People talk a lot about disruptors, about shaking up the status quo. This show is that by definition, pranks and stunts and feats of physical endurance, all in the pursuit of having fun and nothing else, and no one was safe out on the street, in their businesses, on golf courses. All the bullshit normality we accept, all the boring bullshit we embrace, just obliterated. And if your last name was Marjerry, you weren't even safe in your own home, jackass, if you didn't know, is really the combination of two equally irresponsible factions, West Coast and East.
On the West Coast, it's PJ. Clap that's Johnny Knoxville and Adam Spiegel that's Spike Jones and Jeff Tremaine working with Big Brother. And on the East Coast, in Pennsylvania, you had Bam Margera and the Camp Kill Yourself Crew. CKY was Ryan Dunn and Brandan de Camillo, Rab himself and of course BAM's unlucky parents. Big Brother was mostly pranks and physical feats, pulling in the likes of Stevo and We Men, while CKY was entirely stunt based with a genuine glee and how much a band, and they were demonstrating after attempts at getting the show made with Comedy Central and Fax and declining an offer to be a segment on SNL, the collective ended up at MTV with a new perfect name, Jackass.
The show ran for three seasons twenty five episodes, but the way MTV ran them ad fucking nauseum. You'd think the show was on the air for ten years. Then came the movies and the half movies and the spinoff shows Wild Boys and Viva Labam Man more movies. We got up to three D and everything was fine, and then they lost Done, which is tragic because he was genuinely funny, and that was that. Twenty twelve, no more Jackass, And then five years ago we got Jackass Forever, and they were looking fucking haggard.
Man, how long can they continue battering themselves in these amazing stunts? Not much longer, is the answer. And the fact is there weren't all that many stunts to speak of. I don't know if that's because of the absence of Bam, who was fired after filming only two skits, only one of which Marching Band made it into the final film, or owing to the fact that everyone there was feeling their age. Hell, maybe insurance wouldn't cover them.
You'd think the newcomers they'd brought on would be strapped to all sorts of flaming conveyances, but no mainly just getting stung by scorpions or kissing snakes, and you had to figure that was it. They managed to put one more out. They put out a good effort for a bunch of tired old men, but surely no more. They should have stopped, or should have just started a new series where they acted linked to minted mentors. Because this movie is fucking lame.
Remember when TV series needed to put out twenty two or twenty four episodes per season, and in desperation they turn to the most vile repackaging process ever. The clip show Jackass, Best and Last is a fucking clip show. What was your favorite bit, Steve o Hey? Remember that time he kidnapped Brad Pitt? All interwoven with more physical endurance, bullshit and vomit scenes that seem closer to Knoxville's current show, The revamped Fear Factor that he's hosting.
There's no joy here. It's just kind of devolved into what everyone has suspected it was from the beginning, a bunch of idiots torturing each other. It's still funny. I still laughed. Although really the only big kind of prank stunt thing that works is the one cut from the previous film where they have Bam locked in a room with lights out and have him convinced a rattlesnake is on the loose.
It has the manic, crazy, cringy energy of some of their best earlier efforts, and at least there's fucking effort. I will say one thing in the film's favorite, though. Knoxville is frequently emotional about the thing being the end, and it's affecting in ways the rest of the film couldn't hope to be. I can't believe there are great little horror movies going straight to fucking YouTube and this TV special got a theatrical release. Even worse, I paid for it.
That's the roundup for this week. Monday is the next Von Doomfest. I promise it's Doctor Strange and it's a good one. HP is back. You can hear it right now Oliver on the Patreon channel.
As a matter of fact, that link is in the show notes. Thank you all very sincerely for tuning in and continuing to It's always good to know you're listening. Until next we meet. I'm father Malone for ripley gen. Try to enjoy the daylight.
