You Welcome back, Midnight viewers, to Father Malone's Weekly Roundup. I am Father Malone, and I'm back to actual reviewing films and not just jawing about the weather. It's been lovely in Las Vegas these past weeks. We've had rain and clouds and thunder, so gloomy. Speaking of gloomy, I'm not alone in the lighthouse today because I can't do anything alone these days and because her cackle can kill.
Co-host of Button Switches and Consoles, say hello to Laura Grillo. And Laura, say hi to everyone in the Roundup audience. Hi, everyone in the Roundup audience. It is the spooky season setting in, and as such, we're going to be taking a look at the vampires today, the perennial favorite. Symbols of sexual repression and addiction and sexually transmitted diseases and teenage longing and basically anything the times need them to be.
Those are nighttime dwellers who feast on blood and live eternally. We've watched one old, one new, and we're going to review them in reverse order. Keen-eyed listeners have heard me prattle on about the old one from time to time. From 2026, directed and written by Adam Sherman. starring Amina Suvari, India Isley, Sarah Dumont, Dyken Lachman, Rosa Salazar, Tom Barringer, and Stephen Dorff, and Therese Gibson, and Lachlan Monroe. Here's the trailer for Vampires of the Velvet Lounge.
I'm a soldier. A former mercenary. Now I only hunt the damned. You have combat experience, but these things. Are not human.
We don't want them getting inside your mind. You're about to go to the kingdom of paradise. No, no. See the stairway to heaven. Do you want to hear my crazy fetish?
I don't know. How crazy is. It? There's a hunter upstairs. She's heavily armed.
There could be an army of these beasts. Do you want me? You're close to the target. I'm Ramsay the devil, baby. Let's just get this awkward first kiss over with.
We're going to have to vanquish them ourselves. You did something to me. What, are you scared? What's wrong? Don't you want to live forever?
I'm going to send you back to hell. Eternity doesn't mean much if you don't have someone to share it with. Burn in hell! You're just going to keep hiding in the dark and killing humans indefinitely? Yes.
I want an AK and a wooden stake. Undead, undead, undead. Laura. Yep. Have you spent any time in the Velvet Lounge?
Velvet Lounge? Not this particular one, but one. I don't know. Let me think about it. What are you talking about?
Have you spent time watching this movie? No, actually, I'm asking, have you spent any time in vampire establishments? Oh, no. You've never gone to Goth Night at the local this and that? So that equals vampire establishments to you?
If there's probably Bauhaus playing heavily within a church. Of course I've done that. This is what I'm talking about, the dipping into goth culture. Oh, is that what that is? Goodness gravy.
It's a vampire bar, and that's basically goth culture these days. Absinthe equals vampire. Wow, doesn't it? There's a couple of themes in this movie. I'm going to think good thoughts.
How about you? Oh, my God, the worst. This movie isn't a disaster entirely, but it's like they give up on so many things that they're like, the happy thoughts thing it's like they're doing the actors a disservice everyone really gave it their all and it's campy and it's weird but the writing down i'm not saying it's gonna it's genius vampire flick but it's dirty it's ugly it's gory and there's regret and all the the things in it it's a frank sinatra song without yeah it lets you. Down The movie is about a coven of vampires being hunted, who do their hunting through a dating app. And they have this velvet lounge as their lair.
And from there, that's where all the vampire business takes care of. And our heroine, our hero, is a fucking assassin and a killer. I know because she tells us seven fucking hundred thousand times. The way she's written is literally the worst. Or directed.
Everything about what she had to do there was bad, except her body. She's been drafted to hunt vampires down for some shadowy, I'm guessing, Vatican-like organization headed by Tom Berenger. and assisted by Rosa Salazar, who, by the way, should have more cachet than Mina Savari. I don't know how they cast Mirna Savari as the lead. Why would you think Rosa would have more cachet than Mina? She was a lead of Battle Angel just a few years ago, which is a huge Warner Brothers picture that she led.
And Mina Savari was in that fucking pedophile movie from 40 years ago. And that's why the first guy that they killed, I really wanted him to resemble a Kevin Spacey-esque character. I would have liked that kind of wink and nod at the whole thing, but we didn't get that. That's because this filmmaker is incapable of that. Because as you were saying, all the ingredients for what could have been a really fucking fun, campy, vampire horror action flick are just thrown out in the service of... of the most basic action-adventure tropes since time immemorial.
Also, I love when you can tell that the screenwriter has done some research where a character just spills out fucking, here's the Wikipedia page on vampires coming out of a character's mouth. You know who's really guilty of that is David Goyer, who wrote those Batman movies. You can tell he's reading Omni magazine and going, oh, Batman could use that. And so it becomes a plot point in the movie. I think that the writer sort of was like, I'm tired today.
Let AI write the rest of it. It didn't feel like he Googled anything. It was the bones were there and yet just let you down. I felt that way every time anyone was talking, obviously. Yeah, but there were some good lines.
Yes, but AI could probably come up with some good lines. It's mainly like reading a couple of years ago, they fed in like all of the Batman storylines to come up with a Batman script. And it was like the craziest, just basic level bullshit. And that's what this is. It just seems like, here's the pattern I noticed from the dialogue of this movie.
It's, they come into a scene, they tell us exactly what happened in the last scene, they discuss what's going to go on in this scene, and now what will happen in the next scene. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. But there's some funny stuff.
And I liked how the one character, Joan, had all those, you know, wistful thoughts and kept her humanity or just wanted to have lots of sex or something. I don't know what it was, but. There was elements to it that could have made a really good movie. And the lines were like, don't you want to have sex? It's starting to hurt me.
Those were funny. Yeah. Occasionally something slipped through. Yes. Okay.
Mainly it's just like a continuing exposition dump as dialogue over and over again. Oh, my God. All right. No, it's not a good movie. I get that.
Oh, yeah. No. We're in total agreement. Yes. However.
It was painful. This movie is an hour and 45 minutes when it should have been a lean 70. Yeah, it does take a while. And the production designer was named Burns Burn. I just wanted to point that out.
Well, that makes sense. Does it? Yeah, it goes along with the whole 90s aesthetic. Like, this would be really cutting edge if you said that. Yeah, certainly.
We begin with screens, screens, screens, because this is about dating apps peripherally. Now, let me ask you a question. You're a vampire. You have a lair. I don't know where the lair is.
I know they filmed this in Savannah, Georgia. So let's say you have a lair in Savannah. And as a vampire, your powers extend to clouding the mind and controlling anyone you come in contact with. Also, just by thinking about it, you can make them explode. Why are you on dating apps luring anybody anywhere?
Just walk outside. Well, I guess it's convenient. Why is anyone on dating apps? For vampires. Oh, well.
So let's leave a digital trail, including our faces as vampires, luring these people to Savannah, Georgia, to our lair. But they kind of answer that within the context of the movie. where they say that ai doesn't actually recognize their existence so they explain that away early on yeah they did i know i don't believe. It either Yeah, the AI thing they use again later just as a cheap joke that AI is the devil and they both were, and they're of the devil, so blah, blah, blah. What did you think of Stephen Dorff? I think Stephen Dorff seemed to be having a good time.
He did. And I like Stephen Dorff and I miss him. And he is, of course, one of the best vampires of all time. He was Deacon Frost in the original Blade. So watching him come crawling out of the ground and have red eyes, I thought, oh, here we go.
He didn't disappoint. He definitely made fun of himself. Oh, my. He got the joke. He did.
And I thought he was actually genuinely committed to absolutely idiotic subplot of Teresa's divorce bringing everybody down, which we came back to a lot. They didn't. Yeah. Do you think that shouldn't have happened? It's such a flimsy plot.
I'm glad it had something to react to. Yeah, I thought it needed some character stuff, but it maybe could have given us part of a story about a vampire hunter who has a psychic connection with a vampire in the digital age. No, she was sleeping. And get this idea. And sweaty.
And at the same time, she's having a romance online with somebody, and it's the same vampire. Make that movie. Yeah, that would have been, nope. No, instead we get matrix fistfights. How about this?
You can make someone explode with your mind. Why are you fistfighting with them at all? Everyone needs. A hobby? Or something fun to do to kill the loop of the day.
But I agree with you. What was her name? Daikon? Is that how you say it? The Hunter.
Yes, yes, yes. She's good. She's been in a few things. She's been in a lot of stuff, and she's been very good in some of them. Daikon Lakman.
This movie really did her a disservice, as well as her whole talking like this every one thing in the movie. You didn't love that narration? No, I hated it. Do you know what it reminded me of? I doubt this filmmaker has seen it.
Did you ever see Lydia Lunch's short film, The Right Side of My Brain? I have not. Is that what it sounds like? She narrates it in this sort of scratchity, Lydia Lunch-like fashion, which Fluorid dialogue and very husky in tone. And I thought, wow, this is the clumsiest, stupidest version of the right side of my brain I could ever hear.
To me, it was like a Blade Runner-esque. Oh, that's what he was definitely going for. Okay. Just fail. But yeah, he's just not a good writer at all.
Do you hear me, Adam Sherman? I'm sorry. Stop writing these or stop. It just bothers. So much effort put into it.
It just seems like they had a lot to work with. And I'm disappointed. But I still liked it a little. Which, I don't know, maybe it's a failing of mine to say that. After The Hunger, why would anyone use Bela Lugosi?
Everyone uses Bela Lugosi. They need to knock it off. It's just shorthand bullshit now. Every video, every mashup, every fucking thing. Every fucking thing.
It's like John Fogerty if you're going to fucking do a Vietnam movie. It's just like that. Oh, boy. You know, vampires have to keep a low profile. I find the best way to keep a low profile is by barreling around the streets in an open-top caddy and smashing into fucking tourists and splattering their blood everywhere.
Well, I mean, they needed some fun. They were having a boring night. What about the scene where- They're. Being so careful that they're having guys come in from out of town, but they're driving around their town and wantonly killing. Well, yeah.
This could have been a fucking great movie. This could have been a great movie. I do think it had some potential, but what about the scene where the intelligence, you. Like, Rosa- Rosa Salazar. Was teaching herself how to- Oh my God.
We've all been there. Any woman list knows that we've all done that, but like, Putting that in a movie. Putting that in the middle of a vampire hunting movie. I mean, she was in her underwear the whole time. Pretty much, yeah.
She did when she left. Oh, that was more of a dress, I thought. Yeah, it was, but still. It was at least an effort at covering. It's not great.
And I think that's why it's Pluto. That's why it's streaming on Pluto. Hey, Laura, do you remember when we talked about that thing? And now we should talk about this thing. But next we should talk about another thing.
Oh, gosh. I've never known a girl like you before. That's another one. It was like Ocean's Vampire. What's a cool song?
Oh, I remember that being cool. I'll put that cool song here. I feel so bad for it. They need to branch out. The younger vampire girl who kills herself in the sun and turns into glitter.
I liked her. I liked her a lot. I liked that story arc. India Isley, daughter of Olivia Hussey. She was great.
I thought she was the best thing in the movie. She was the best thing. No, I thought she got the message when she woke up in the dirt and was eating the bugs and everything and just treating it like very matter of fact. Okay, here we go. Now let's go kill some people.
Everyone else was acting. There were moments she acted too. Sure. Kept the tone. I don't know.
She was great. She was absolutely great. I thought she and Mark Boone Jr. as the Amina Savari's giant bearded assistant were probably. Everyone loves him and he's in everything. But he gets the memo.
Yeah, because he doesn't have to fucking do anything. He doesn't have to work hard. He just exists in his slovenly self. I wish I had a career based. On that shit.
I don't dislike him. I'm sure he's really... I don't know if he's cool. I don't give a fuck actually, but He just, all of a sudden, equal status right now for film buffs. Filmmakers.
I didn't realize I had tapped into this hatred of Mark Barron Jr. I don't have a hatred. I just think it's lazy. His existence. It's just a shorthand for cool, is what you're saying?
Yeah. For indie cred, perhaps? Yeah. Took me to the horror movie. Yeah.
Okay. Achieved. Achieved. He is cool, he's ridiculous, and he is slovenly. You think too slovenly for these vamps?
I mean, it didn't fit, but when you know the context, it would have been him or Tom Waits playing Parchee and then murdering for them. An hour and 45 minutes of them playing Parchee and Moore. I would have absolutely loved that movie. I would have watched that. This did have a steaming plate of Alfredo to the face, though.
You mean all the blood? No, when they had the big food fight when they were on their first date, the vampire hunter and the vampire. Do you remember when there's that fucking bloodbath with Stephen Dorff where everyone goes nuts and they're all killing each other? Yeah, I remember that. Some old guy got his head slammed into a plate and it was all steaming and his skin was coming off.
I liked that. Yes, I remember that. It was very John Wick-y. Exactly. But digital blood can get fucked, by the way.
Okay. In every scenario. Yeah. And you've got to love a moment where a chef slips on blood and then somehow positions his knife behind his back so he stabs himself when he falls off. That, to me, reminded me of the Kingsman movie with Samuel L.
Jackson when he has the phone cards that changes people into violence. Oh, yeah. But instead, this was Meena Savari doing it. What do you think of Meena Savari? I think she really committed to this role.
I think she's had a tough time being a part of that movie. stealing and being maybe, I wouldn't know, but maybe treated badly because of it. Once people got their head around it and realized what it was and being a sacrificial lamb of that. So I like her in this movie. I like how she behaved. I like how strong she was and all the weird shit she said at the end when she's like, did I mention how hot you look with those pistols?
They're ridiculous. It's ridiculous. I think she really, I enjoy her in this. Yeah, this entire cast deserved a better movie, including her, because I thought she was great in this. Yes.
And I usually do not like her. Usually? I usually do not like her. I think she's limited. Okay.
I think she's perfect for this kind of film. I think, I don't know what that means. I think she is a bad actress. Ooh, ouch. You kept pushing, so there it is, everybody.
Well, but what was she in that she wasn't good? When she showed up on Six Feet Under, I thought she was really bad in that. Okay. The fucking, the Kevin Spacey movie, I didn't think she was particularly fucking great or anything. To me, back to my point, she was young.
Yes, I know, and they were using her for that reason, but that doesn't make her a good actress. It just makes her a good look for that part that they were using her for. Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this. One, Father. That's okay, you're allowed.
Okay. You won't be allowed back on the Roundup or anything. Tom Barringer. I thought he was going to do an entire green screen performance, and then he got out of a van. He should never have been in that movie.
It was like, he's about to die. He wanted a trip to Europe. Yeah, no. Didn't need it. Didn't want it.
Tom Murphy was wasted. They should have put Tim Murphy. I mean, he should have been that role instead of the cue card reading Tom Barringer, who I like. I've seen him in good movies. Who was Tim Murphy?
He was the first one they killed. Oh, that guy, yeah. But I wanted to look like a Kevin Spacey because that would have to me been. I agree. It would have been knowing.
I thought so. This movie is not knowing. This movie only knows other movies. And Absinthe. It knows Absinthe.
A ton of fucking Absinthe. A ton of Absinthe. You know what goes good with pizza? Licorice. Dorf, Gibson, and Monroe.
You need character actors to choose some scenery. They've got you fucking covered. Yeah. They deserved a better movie set. I can't believe Aretha has left me.
Oh my God, Tyrese. He was really, and why, of course he was upset about it. Why wouldn't he be? Aretha Franklin left. Not going to get any of that publishing money now.
She went to go ride in her pink Cadillac. That's true. Okay, we're getting away from, I can understand someone being that distraught. I liked that part of it. Yeah, but I don't think in any case the cure for that are his two bros.
I think he should go home. Maybe journal or something. In the context of the film, we dudes with no morals. The movie wants to be about dating and it has nothing to do with dating. It's just a standard vampire hunting movie with a gloss of dating apps because that's a new angle.
Yeah. Yes. Moving on. Okay. Don't watch it, everybody.
I mean, I would keep watching. Well, I guess some of the performance. It's a waste of time. It's two hours. Don't do it.
Have you seen the guy's other films? I'll say something positive. Great poster. Really good poster. Which one?
For Vampires of the Velvet. It's a good title. Velvet Goldmine. Boy. You a big fan of that movie, Velvet Goldmine?
No. I can tell you loved it. Nope. You're a big fan of Ewan McGregor. I liked him in that.
Shadows, what is it called? Shallow Grave? Yeah. When he was a pup? Yeah, he was a little baby.
Baby Obi-Wan. All right. Moving on, folks. From the ridiculous to the sublime. From 1987, written by Eric Redd and Catherine Bigelow, directed by Catherine Bigelow, starring Adrian Pazdar, Jenny Wright, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jeanette Goldstein, Tim Thomerson, Joshua Miller, this is the trailer for Near Dark.
I'm going to separate your head from your shoulders. Do it fast. All right. The time's rolled. Woo!
No! You might as well just kill me then, too. Caleb Colton no longer belongs to our world. We'll give him a week to see if we can call him one of us. He belongs to hers.
But you have to learn to kill. He belongs to theirs. I don't want to kill. He makes you kill tonight. And they all belong to the night.
Just three dollars short for a bus ticket home. You owe me an hour. What are you on? I don't believe you. I told you.
Just don't think of it as killing. Amen. Amen. Don't think at all. It's just something that you do night after night.
It's only ever a question of how. You nervous? I would be too if I were you. Near dark. The three of your boys fall in with the throat.
Check out time. You bought yourself some time, son. Goddamn, this is my family. Let him go. Near Dark is the greatest vampire film ever made.
The end. Agree? Laura, I brought you here to agree with me. well this was your first time watching it tell me about tell me about your experience with. Near dark i could have used a little more dialogue. I've never heard that criticism okay.
I don't know who you're talking to about. It but i've just read criticism of the movie nobody ever said okay we need more dialogue. I would have liked more products i never thought that before but. What what do you where did you think it was when she was hanging. Out with Caleb the First Knight.
The night sky is deaf and stuff. And I gotta go. Take me. I don't know. There wasn't much talk.
No, I agree with you. Okay. I like this. Yeah. What, you think I was going to take you apart for not liking that bit?
No, because it wouldn't have happened. No, I know. I wouldn't try. I just would have liked, there was a lot of, like Bill Paxton had a lot of lines, a lot of sadistic, creepy, disturbing shit, which was well done. It's hard to watch, but.
I agree. Yes. And deservedly so. The thing about vampires is we always just see them clamp down on somebody's neck or, or recently, just like in the last movie that we'll get gouts or fountains or geysers of blood, making it absolutely meaningless. Yeah, there were a lot of geysers in the last one we talked about.
There is a moment in this movie where they cut a woman's throat and then put a glass stein underneath her and then pull the now full glass up and he slams it on the table and it splatters everywhere and it has made me sick for nearly 30 years. It's a tough scene. I didn't like that. I don't know why. Because it's meant to be ruinous and make us not like these vampires anymore.
What's funny is it's thought of as this big sort of set piece moment. People talk about that moment like they talk about American Werewolf in London where the transformation scene or something like that, because they think it's cool. And yet it's really harrowing. It is that Barsi changed things. But yet at the same time, he still saved them when he didn't have to.
He could have just ran off. So that was hard for me to wrap my head around. These are not redeemable. They're not nice. They don't like him that much, if at all.
And yet he came back and saved them. And the only reason why he went on a different path was because they found his family and almost killed them or turned his. Yeah. Wow. Pretty right on.
Never mind. This is the worst vampire movie of all time. No, anyway. Listen. It's not that.
Anything with Jenny Wright in her heyday. She's especially weird in this film and God bless her. Yes. I've always said she has a vulnerability, and yet she could probably kill anyone in the room, which is rare. To contain both is really rare.
I believe she was as capable as any other vampire in that bar. She shows that she was, and it seems effortless on her part, and yet it seems like she needs help at all times. Yeah. She definitely played the damsel, the vampiric damsel. This was your first time watching the movie, yes?
Yeah. Yeah, it's... Visually amazing. Obviously, the music with Tangerine Dream was incredible. And it's straight up like a young Bigelow.
It's right on the path of Relentless. Big sky, beautiful scenes, dark shit, and no explanation. Yeah, that's everything I'm looking for. Yeah. Did you see The Hitcher?
No. Oh, my goodness. Jeez, how are we going to work that in here? We'll figure it out. The Hitcher is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it traffics in the same environment, which is the American Southwest, particularly the lonely American Southwest, which is a favorite of mine.
This movie ticks almost every box for me as far as what I was looking for, unknowingly in a vampire movie, because it takes place in the Southwest, so it's a purely American film. In fact, these are as vampires as cowboys as you can possibly get. So those things worked for me. It also... contained basically the cast of Aliens, which I was already obsessed with when I saw this film. Lance Hendrickson.
Yeah, Jeanette Goldstein and Bill Paxton just poured it right over from Aliens. What could be better? And in some of my favorite performances of theirs of all time, particularly Lance Hendrickson. Oh, my God. Oh, Jesse Hooker.
When I first saw this film, I had seen The Lost Boys. Well, they came out the same year. The same year. So everyone was talking about Lost Boys, and that's all anyone... was watching as far as horror movies. And at the time I had a friend whose father was a police officer and he would flash his badge at the local movie theater and we would just see movies for free on the weekend.
And so we never really looked up what we were going to see. We just went and saw movies. So I saw this, in fact, hold on, I'm going to stop because I'm going to look up the name of the other fucking movie. Cause it is so stupid. No, it's no, it's worse than that because that movie is at least intending to. hold on okay i saw this as a double feature with a charlie sheen car stealing porsche stealing movie called a no man's which as it turns out was written by dick wolf the creator of.
A lawn or oh we've all had messed up it is Terrible. And we saw that first. And next we went to see a movie called Near Dark, which I had seen zero advertising for, had no idea what we were stepping into. It immediately became my favorite vampire film. Yeah.
I mean, visually it is jarring, beautiful and weird. So of course it was your favorite. And part of that was reactionary because the other version of vampires we were getting were MTV. And everything was glossy and everyone was invited to that party. No one was inviting these vampires because these are real vampires who fuck shit up.
What do you mean the MTV version of the vampires? Lost Boys was very high gloss and music video sort of orient. But it wasn't Oliver Stoney nauseating. Oh, no, no. I'm not bagging on Lost Boys at all.
I'm just saying that was the prevalent thing and that was the sort of new take on vampires, that it was cool and fun and let's party. And while that's always been present in the idea of vampire lore, to me, vampires are really fucking scary. These people are scary. I don't want to run into any of them. And at the same time, I love that milieu, which is the sort of urban wasteland early morning where it's just you and them.
I don't know. This movie hits me in a lot of levels. Right. Okay. I mean, it's, yeah, it's a good movie.
I'm not defending it or anything. It needs no defense. It's fucking great. It's dark as fuck. Dark in its intent or the way they shot it?
Both. And I do like the twist at the end and how they wrap it up. Because I was like, okay, what's going to happen? They need to wrap this shit up somehow. The effect of young Joshua Miller on fire still looks great to me to this day.
It was really interesting. I think what bothered me also, though, there was a lot of killing. And there was the bar scene was just painful, long drawn out, psychological warfare, murder. Yeah, Severin is certainly playing with his crew. But it wasn't just Severin.
It was all of them. Yeah. So, and it bothered me. But then there was a point where the two people who tried to steal from them and maybe was about to rape her, we don't get to see them murdered. Right.
And I, like, I felt cheated. I don't think you should feel weird about that because you're right. Because we are treated to a lot of blood and gore and unpleasantness, and that is part of the vampire life, but we know that they also get to kill horrible people sometimes, and that must feel really good. That would have been nice. I would have liked a little bit of that.
That's true. That's the only one we don't get to see. We just get to see them kill innocent. We don't see anything of that. That might be by design, though.
I think it was in editing that was decided in post. I think there was probably some good violent shit that we just missed. I saw this movie again 10 years later at the Director's Guild with Catherine Bigelow and Joshua Miller in tow. Oh, wow. Joshua Miller is, of course, Jason Patrick's younger brother.
Yeah, you mentioned that in your last. And is most famous, if famous at all, or more infamous, rather, for his role in Teen Witch as her creepy brother. I remember him from River's Edge. Naturally, because. No.
Sweet as shut me up. Take that compliment. Okay. Catherine Bigelow is incredible. She really is.
There's nothing wasted in this film. And apparently when training the actors would just have them run routines of having to tinfoil a room so they wouldn't die. That's so stupid. A siren would go and they'd have to go tinfoil the room. Okay.
I'll do that. Sure, whatever. I get to go be a vampire in an RV. I'll tinfoil it. There was another part with the officer at the bus station when he was a little bit hard time.
The principal from Twin Peaks. Troy Evans, I think. I thought that was going to get weird. I thought he was going to take some liberties, but instead he just gave him the $ 3. It's a moment of tension.
Not everything has to end in blood. Not even blood I thought was going to get weirder, but they definitely drew that out. Just wondering if that was the reason why. No, I don't think there's much left on the cutting room. You think so?
I do. Okay. Where does this movie stand in your mind ranked against Once Bitten? That's the Jim Carrey movie with Martin Hutton. Oh, yeah.
Which I watch every year. Yeah, it's a fantastic film. I do too. I'm not joking, everyone. That's a great movie, Once Bitten.
It is a good one. If you want to see Hollywood at its most slimy and neon, check out One's Bitten, 1985. Yeah, I like them. I wouldn't put them on that level. One's comedy, One's not.
Where would you put this against The Lost Boys? See, this is where you're going to goonie me. And you're going to be like, oh, Goonies is not as good of a movie as my science project. But this Goonie, The Lost Boys is great. I love that movie.
This movie is really atmospheric and considered good. And well done, but I'd rather watch The Lost Boys. And maybe that says more about me than vampires. It says you're troubled enough. You need some fun in your life.
I do. I do. And I'm just looking for. And brother, I'm going to get it with Tangerine Dream. It's one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
I will listen to this on a loop, honestly. It's really nice. It's beautiful. And apparently this movie is really hard to find these days, streaming and otherwise. I don't know what to... tell you about that i have it physically everyone should i don't think any vampire list is actually complete without this film yeah of course not and and i said my particular obsessions with it this sort of southwestern cowboy flavor of vampire without them wearing fucking cowboy hats and.
Actually there was some cowboy hats. Yeah yes but it doesn't it isn't we don't have to set this in 1879 for this to be a cowboy film because the western can can exist in other genres And I just think this is very skillful use of a Western in another. Agreed. Even though all the trappings of the Western are like right out in front of you. Yeah.
Right down to the fucking showdown, except they use a fucking Mack truck. Look, I love this movie. I love it too. Not love it. I liked it a lot.
So you're banned. It's good. It's a good movie. It is a good movie. It features Jeanette Goldstein more than any other film, and she's not having to play Mexican.
Ooh. But see, that was, that's, she do that. Why did she do Aliens? No, why did she play Mexican? She's not.
Because she was, I believe she was an American living, she was an expat living in England and working as an actress there. And they came there and they said, we need somebody who can do that. And she said, I could do that. And it's a big American film in 1986. Okay.
I'd like to give her that much credit. Yeah. What do you think of Love at First Bite? Love at First Bite with George Hamilton. He is.
Have you watched it recently? No. I have. You have. Reviewed it a couple of years ago.
Oh, really? Well, that's a good one. It is. Oh, no. It is.
No. No, it's not. I know. It is utter garbage. And it's hard to find the original version of it because they had to pull a bunch of the music cues out of it.
I would say my favorite vampire movie is Daughters of Darkness. Whoa. Going back. Old school. That's...
That's a great one. Oh, great. I'm glad. No, I mean. There's a lot of really fun, the lesbian C-70 vampire genre.
That's probably the best one. Vampiros lesbos. Yeah, exactly. There's a lot of good ones. There's a lot of bad ones.
Yeah, but they're also good. But those are good ones. I say this is my favorite vampire film, but really it's probably Martin, the George Romero film, just because I think that's his best film. And that is, that's a is he or isn't he situation. Yeah.
Well, it has good posters. Oh, it has a great poster with the razor blade. Yeah, we do. All right. But you can't watch it with us.
Get out of here, folks. I don't, I can't tell you what's up next, but I can tell you that on Monday, it is a brand new button switches and is it? No. Yes, it is a brand new button switches and consoles. We're going to be talking about Midnight Run.
Does that make sense in the sense of technology? Yes, it does. It does. So shove it. Yes.
Yeah, do that. All right, Laura, anything you want to say to the folks before we go? Vampire or otherwise? Yes, Tim Thomas, and he was in Cherry 2000, which we talked about, and Airwaves. And he was kind of good in this.
He's great in this. Nobody had much to say, to be honest. Yeah, which I like. I like that. That's my first point.
How many people are just fucking jawed away all the time? Exactly. Just us. Well, that's it. Try to enjoy the day later.
Oh, and James LeGros. And James LeGros, yes, as scared pool man. He was in it. He begged for life guy. Yes.
Did you ever see My New Gun with him and Diane Lane? No, but I like the title. We'll look for that in a future episode. Everybody try to enjoy the day later. Thank you.
