Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power. Five more cooling in the containment chamber. To your citizens, we have a movie meltdown.
Are mutants dangerous? What's up? Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. I am Misty.
And I'm Jay. And we are currently on the road heading up to Lexington for Scarefest, which once. Again has become an annual event. We've been at least the last three years just for the show. I didn't do it.
You were slacking last year. I was. I don't think I went last year either. If I didn't go, you didn't go. Hell yeah.
You're not allowed out of the house without her, you know. Yeah. So, yeah, as they show, we've been at least the last three years, and they've put together some really good stuff over the years, so I'm kind of looking forward to this one. Maybe it's just because Leah Thompson's there. That's, you know, arguable, but anyway.
I'm still wondering if I can manage to hold back, because that one douchebag's going to be there, and I don't know if I can hold it this time. Try to control yourself. It's douchebaggins or whatever his name is. Douchebaggins. If you're a fan of ghost chasing shows, you probably know who she's talking about.
God, I hate that guy. This one is, again, as we've mentioned in the past, this one is equally as much horror and movie related as it is paranormal investigation related and that type of thing. So it brings in a whole different side to it that a lot of other conventions don't. Have, so. Some of the horror investigation people are just fine.
Other ones are... What are they, Miss K? Fucking douchebags. I hate that guy. I'm sorry.
What little I've seen of him, I don't like him either. Oh, I want to punch him in his over-made-up face. He was wearing a ton of makeup last time we saw him. I want to knock the gel out of his fucking hair. Oh, man.
I want to knock off his fake spray tan. I want to knock the bedazzled beads off his affliction shirt. That car's got eyelashes. Look. That car had eyelashes.
That car has personality. That's stupid. Out of all the things you can customize on your car, are you going to put eyelashes on it? It's not very aerodynamic. Some people like to dress up their car a little more than others.
You need a squirrel stuck in that shit. You're sexy. Excuse me, you've got a squirrel in your eye. Go on. Alright, so we figured while we're heading up here, we can knock out some geek activities for the last couple of weeks.
For at least you guys. I think mine's just been the last week, so. um let's see for me the first one and it's really unusual for me because i left the house for one thing holy shit and went out amongst people even more so than we're doing today it was a different type of people because i'm all for like movie geeks and horror convention geeks i can deal with them but when you go see a band there's an entirely different crowd oh. Who'd you go see I went and saw They Might Be Giants. Oh, no. Yep.
Oh, God. Which, in a way, is better because those are, like, nerds more than geeks. Like, they're, like, when you play science rock, you know, people are. Just, like, you know, you're bringing a different crowd than, like, fucking cock rock or something. It's a very different, more subdued crowd.
But still, I say the same thing I go to most concerts. People, stop dancing. Really? Just. Especially there.
You're a whole bunch of dorky white people. Stop with your dancing. Was there hippie dances going on? Nah. Yeah, a couple.
Was there some thumbs and elbows? Then there were like old people that were rubbing their butts together. I was like, no, no, stop. You're old. Stop that.
If you were a kid, it would still be obnoxious, but no, you're old people. Stop it. You're gonna break a hip or something. Yeah. That's not...
You're like somebody's parents. Cut that shit out. So. There was all that. I'll get to the actual music later.
But the other thing that annoyed me, and this happens on occasion, I see this a lot of times, when. You go to a show, why would you go to a show, now at least this one. They didn't really pay much to get in there, but in particular it bothers me when people also pay for tickets. When people leave early, I'm like, just get up in the middle of the headliner that I'm assuming you're there to see, and just leave. Now the people in front of me, They, first of all, were sitting down.
Now, it was an outdoor event, so everybody was, I mean, there weren't any chairs. Everybody was standing up all the way to the stage. They just brought little folding chairs and were sitting down. So you couldn't even see from where they were. Well, that's why they got up and left.
Well, and then, okay. I can't see a damn thing. They were just like, this sucks, I'm going home. Okay, this was right after they got up and two of the three of them bought merchandise. So they spent a.
Good $ 60, $ 70 in merchandise over at the merch tent there. And then sat down, and within 20 minutes, got up and left. Hey, sometimes all you need is the t-shirt. I was like, is that what it is? I was like, how fucking poser do you need to be?
Yeah, I really like they might be joints. I saw them live. Okay, I didn't see them, and I didn't stay for the whole show. But look at this cool t-shirt I got. I don't know.
It's like still buying a bootleg Kid Rock shirt. I'll tell you that right now. In the parking lot. In the parking lot. And I made Phillip run and get it for me because I didn't want to go chase the lady by myself.
Why did you buy a bootleg? I don't know. To prove I was there. It was really bad. I'm like, oh, that's so bad.
I've got to have that. That sucker's somebody else. Go get it for me. That is one that I like to throw out there to people just to confuse them. Oh, yeah.
I've seen him live. Good luck figuring that one out. That was a good show, eh? Oh, yeah. As much as...
Aside from the guy throwing up beside us. That was pretty gross. Yeah, as much as he's obnoxious and ridiculous and pretty dumb, yeah, he did put on a good live show. I kind of like Kid Rock. I like him a lot.
He's got a few tolerances. I wouldn't want to hang out with him. I think he's a... Speaking of douchebags, he seems like a douchebag. Oh, yeah.
But, yeah, there's a couple songs I can tolerate, but the fact that I went to a live show still confounds even me. Well, he wasn't the reason we went, though. No, I know, but it's still the fact that I was at a Kid Rock show. We went for a reason more geekier. We went to see Tenacious D.
Now, that, to me, is reason enough to go to a show. So, even to sit through Kid Rock, which ended up being a decent live show. So, Tenacious D, Super Dorks. Aw, crap. I forgot to check to see when Man or Astro Man's playing.
Didn't I hate Man or Astro Man? I mean, you hate him, but I like him, so. Well, ugh. You're on your own on that one. That's fine.
I don't care. Yeah, I think after that day we started referring to them as Man or Astro. Fuck. Yeah, I hated that band. Why do you hate that band?
They're fucking retarded. Stupid. I don't even remember what they play. I kind of remember one song. I remember their outfits.
Which was the song we left on. Other than that, I really don't even remember what they play so much. So, I don't know. They're wearing, like, stupid shit. That's fine.
I don't care. I don't see them. You can't see them. You're going to bring a chair and sit down. Yeah.
And then start doing hippie dance. No, I don't dance. See, you know it. Sometimes you do. You understand.
Santa Claus dance. Yeah, but that's only for you. Those are special dances, but that doesn't count for the real world. Alright, they might be giants. So, yeah, the band themselves actually kicked ass.
Especially if you're into super nerdy rock. And that was my thing. The more I sat there and watched them, I was like, this has to be awesome for them to... I mean, just because... they were having so much fun playing. Like, when I imagine coming up with anything musically, it's always, you know, like everything else I come up with, angry and bitter.
And just, like, dark. So, I mean, most of the music I'm normally drawn to is also angry and depressing and dark. So I'm listening to this, and, I mean, almost all of theirs, even the songs about people dying, are pretty damn upbeat and fun. And I'm just like, it must be great to, like, actually, like, play music that's enjoyable. Like, I'm not used to exposing myself to that type of entertainment.
So, yeah, it was really weird. Maybe you should. I guess I should. Maybe you should cheer the fuck up. I think that's why I balance out with cheesy pop music, and that's why I always kind of like this.
That's why I'm listening to Selena, because that's the one thing that keeps me from going on a shooting spree. It's like, okay, well, I can listen to this, and it brightens it just enough to put it over the edge. So, yeah, I think it's. It's a Mandy. I like some Mandy more.
Yeah, you can't go wrong with Mandy. Mandy keeps me from killing people on occasion. So. Yeah, I think that's why every once in a while, you know, it's that 25% of my musical diet that has to be cheesy pop. that people don't... Another thing people don't understand that I will partake in.
I'm just like, yeah, I know it doesn't make any sense, but sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes you just need some Selena, goddammit. That's... You're telling me. You guys are weird.
Oh, yeah, I don't argue. I'm totally weird, but. Again, back to probably a more acceptable one, is they might be giants. They are fun, and to tie in some geekiness to it, I mean, they did do a Planet of the Apes theme song. They broke up the audience into halves, and one side had to chant, Apes!
Apes! Apes! And the other side had to chant, People! People! Which side were you on?
I was on the people side, and we won. So, I'm pretty proud of that. There was a competition of some sort, I guess, to see who could do it more consistently and louder. I wasn't really, I'm not a big, you know. I'm not a participator.
Yeah, I'm not really a big yippy kind of person at the concerts. I might clap just to sort of support them in general, but even that's pretty yippy. It's about 50% of the time. So, yeah, that one was fun. And then later there was a puppet show.
What? Yes. And they had, well, we're essentially sock puppets. It was just like a knit puppet with eyes glued on it. And they stood in front of the, they had a giant screen behind them.
So they climbed up in front of the camera that was running it and started doing a puppet show. That was their alter ego band that they were just opening for. And yeah, that was actually pretty entertaining for, you know, a puppet show in front of thousands of people. Boyfriend bought some puppets, so that was pretty exciting. Yeah, they were boxing puppets, though.
That's right, I saw the pictures. And I have to say, once again, I said it online, that's the most unfair fight I've ever seen. Yeah. Are you going to break it down for our home listeners? Yeah, I found a set of 1960s Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell boxing puppets.
I'm sorry, but Ali in his prime versus Cosell at any time in his career. I know, but they had constant... friendly verbal battles and banter. Yeah, they go together in the time period. They certainly do. That was the name in boxing.
Yeah, I made you, you made me. You made me, I made you, you know, kind of thing. So they go together, you know, but the fighting part. Yeah. But hey, it's still funny.
For $ 9, they were mint condition, so. Those are, I would have bought them for $ 9. Those are awesome. I think that you always round down that drive me absolutely insane. $ 9. 99.
That's closer to $ 10. Oh, good God. Round up. He has his own math. He does.
Yeah, leave my math alone. It works. Well, does it? Yeah, it does. It doesn't work.
It works in my world. You're world retarded. Yeah. Well, you're not invited, so there. Why are you there?
Dang you. We're drawing a line down the middle of the house. On the what? On the middle of the house. This is Jay's world.
You stay out of Jay's world. I've seen sitcoms. That's how this shit works. And it never works. And it never works.
What else did you do? Otherwise, I was just going to go with one other movie I did. For some reason, I'm not even sure specifically why. I think I just wanted something sort of fun last week and. Not so heavy.
Last week I decided to watch They Lived. How was that? Have you watched it recently? Oh, yeah, it's great. I love that movie.
I mean, it is... It's got one of the longest damn fight scenes in it. I believe the longest fight scene in the movie. And most ridiculous. It's fucking retarded.
Oh, my God. So. And you made me watch it a lot. Oh, yes, I did. You're mad.
You were so angry. You were like, oh! It's awesome. And just the fight scene or the whole movie? No, the whole movie.
Well, that's the thing. It's like I remember watching it years ago, and I kind of liked it. Again, I thought the fight scene was ridiculous even then. But I was like, it's been a long time. And I started watching, I think, last year.
I got like halfway into it and fell asleep and didn't finish. I was like, okay, I want to see that. It's not wrong turn. We'll do it. I do that with half the movies I watch.
What are you talking about? So, this time, I was like, I want to actually sit down and finish watching it. So, it must have been a long time since the end, because I didn't even remember how it wrapped up. Like, it was just like, I know, halfway in, I was like, what does happen at the end of this movie? Which is odd, because in the middle of the They Might Be Giants set, they brought up They Live, and then they said something like, at.
The end of They Live, and they went, wait, what did happen at the end? I don't even remember the end. It was odd that it. I don't remember. Yeah, the concert, and I guess maybe life in general.
Everybody seems to forget what happens at the end of it. Yeah, I've seen it several times, and I still really can't remember at the end. He destroys the satellite, doesn't he? Yeah, but again, and I realized why, it's like it's a very lackluster ending. Yeah.
Especially the last couple of scenes. It's just random stuff happening. And then the one, the last one is really random and just happens in credits. And I'm just like, Maybe that's part of why nobody remembers what the hell happens at the end of this movie. There was no big finale.
Yeah, I mean, even the satellite is not much of a finale, really. Yeah, no, the antenna. He takes out the antenna. Yeah, and then everybody can see. It's a pretty weak payoff, really.
Yeah, it's like, oh, hey, look, everybody's finally seeing what you've been seeing the whole movie. Well, that's, I mean, that's the thing. The more, and the. If we want to go into it fully somewhere in our line, we can. But for now, my thinking on it is it's a really great concept.
I mean, that's why, like, to this day, people reference it constantly. Like, I still hear geeks in general and occasionally even regular people sort of reference it because it is such a cool idea and such. and plays on such a basic. Fear of ours that we're all kind of being duped by something, by the government, by, you know, something up the line. Because we are. Because we are.
It's some higher power that's in charge of things and is running things, and we're, you know, much like the sheep we actually are, just going right along. Yeah. Dude, I think. That movie is more real than people really seem to understand. It is.
And it is, I think... Again, that's almost the sad part of it. I think the concept is so much better than the actual movie. The actual movie ends up being that letdown of an ending and the ridiculous fight scene. And midway in, I was like, there's not much else that happens after the first half.
Like, after he's running from the cops, the whole rest is just him running from the cops and trying to convince a couple other people that it's happening. But that's it. Like, that's all you get the whole rest of the movie until the finale. So it's like, there's not really. To me, it was like, for a Carpenter movie, it's kind of weak in the plot.
All right, do you want to go ahead? Wow, what the hell was that? Do you want to explain what you just saw? I'm not sure that I can. I think I needed pictures and I didn't have a camera out.
It was a monster jeep. A monster jeep with jacked up jeep with zebra stripes? Yeah. Completely painted zebra stripes. Yep.
Hell yeah, I was pretty sure I was getting ready to run over that other car too. There was a car over in. The emergency lane and this... monster jeep zebra thing come to the rescue you look like a damn tonka toy like like you. Remember the old tonka toys like uh the adventure sets the one that. Had the guy with like the mustache yeah that's what it looked like he would be driving i still have that guy somewhere huge fucking monster truck jeep that's all zebraed out, like, safari-like.
He was, like, my Indiana Jones figure before they made Indiana Jones figures. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I made a little whip for him, and, yeah, he had the hat already. I love that guy, because he was almost Indiana Jones. Almost, but he had the mustache.
And predated it. Those were, like, from the late 70s, so. Oh, wow. Lucas and Spielberg stole from Tonk. Yeah.
All right. So, yeah, they live. To me, it's like it's, I don't know, it's so much better better of a concept than what you actually get structurally in the story. It seems like it's kind of a letdown story-wise. And some of that, no offense to Roddy, but I mean, it's a whole, and to me, I've said this all along, to me, that role was written for Kurt Russell.
I mean, the two previous movies were Kurt Russell. You look at Roddy Piper, he's got, I mean, he looks like he's got the hair that Kurt had. At that time. Everybody had that hair at that time. He did.
But I mean, he's wearing the jeans and shirt that Kurt Russell was wearing in previous movies. I mean, you look at him, it looks exactly like Kurt Russell did in Big Trouble in China, which was right before this. So it's like, this to me was that, it was supposed to be that trifecta of, you know. The thing. Why did Kurt Russell not do this?
I don't know. He might have just got another job. Maybe they got pissed at each other and didn't want to work together. Maybe he demanded more money. To me, that is such a, needed to be a Kurt Russell role and fell to Roddy.
And Roddy's fun. We just saw him a couple months ago. But, yeah, he definitely is not Kurt Russell. In this movie. He is Rowdy.
He's rowdy. No argument there. He is one rowdy motherfucker. But, yeah, I think some of it suffers from him. The other guy, is it Keith David, I think is the other guy?
I don't know. Who? I think it's Keith David, the other guy that he's kind of convinced that he gets in a fight with. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's pretty good.
I think it's Keith David. I can't remember. Yeah, or David Keith. They're interchangeable, aren't they? Whatever.
But, yeah, he's... Other than the white and black. I'm driving. I ain't got a computer. I can't look it up.
But, yeah, they... He's really good. It's like one of. If you could have had him with Kurt Russell doing this movie and a little punch-up on the script, I think it could have been right up there with some of the best Carpenter stuff. I still think the concept is up there, but I think the finished product is not so much.
It's a little off maybe, but anyway, they live, still awesome, still a hell of a good time, but yeah, amazing concept, all right, you want to move into your geek week soon? We didn't actually watch that much stuff. I spent more time working than anything else. But we did watch a few things. I, myself, I watched the first two seasons of Veronica Mars over again because, goddammit, I.
Love the hell out of that show. I love me some Veronica. I swear, that's one of the best shows ever. And that show is still awesome. I can't get Boyfriend to watch it because Boyfriend.
Just don't care. I know. It's just so well written and Veronica Mars is just so damn cute and it's just. It's just. Some things I don't care about.
For something that's banking on her cute factor, like they kind of were in the beginning, it is amazing how well written it is and how much it relies on being a smart script and a really intricate plot that you wouldn't see coming out of a goofy, made-for-cable-network TV show. It's way smarter than I ever expected going in, because I. Thought it was just going to be another dumb, WB teen girl, you know, looking cute kind of show. But then how much dark, how much dark elements it has, and I mean, the whole first season is her trying to figure out who murdered. Her best friend and who raped her.
Yeah, it's not a cheery show like you would expect from that kind of show. And then the second season's dealing with who blew up a bus, you know? Full of kids, yeah. Full of high school kids, so it ends up being If you haven't seen it, I'm going to spoil it. Spoiler alert.
Spoiler alert. It's got a, what's his face? Beaver? No, no. What about the guy who was one of the three men and a baby?
Gutenberg. Oh, Gutenberg. Steve Gutenberg being a fucking child molester. Oh, yeah. I think I walked in on that part.
You're like, oh, that's Steve Gutenberg? Yeah. And then you walked out. In the beginning, I thought it was odd casting. As it goes on, I was like, he's pretty good at this.
Again, the working... He's convincible as hell. Well, no, because he plays his normal cheesy Steve Guttenberg kind of role because he's like a politician and he's supposed to play that. And then, like most politicians, there's something evil and underhanded going on and. He pulls that off too.
It seems a little more convincing being. He can play that cheesy persona a little better. Yeah, it's got so many dark elements that you wouldn't expect from such a surface level. It's just a high school show. It could be, but it's a lot more than that.
That's what makes it so awesome because... It's... I don't know. You have to pay attention, I guess. So you have to...
That's why I don't watch it. I don't like stuff I have to pay attention to. It's serious. But, yeah, it's still one of my favorite shows. I think it's probably in my top five all-time favorite shows.
It is. It's awesome. But then, other than that, we watched... Well, Randy's probably already heard our take on both of the next movies that we're going to talk about, so... Sorry, Randy.
We watched Vanishing on 7th Street. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah that movie just yeah it sucked. Stupid what is I don't even the name sounds familiar but I'm mixing it up it's.
Got Hayden Christensen wakes up one morning and like everybody vanished everybody done got they done got called they're gone you. Know what I wish this movie would vanish out of my brain because. It sucked I think I think I saw the trailer for this it seemed like it could have been yeah yeah. The trailer looks pretty good you're like oh something could happen you know what that's pretty much the movie You going, hey, something could have happened. But what is it?
We don't know. We never find out what happened. We never find out what it is. No, you have no clue. We spend half the time yelling at the people for this stupid shit.
Being dumb. We need a source of light. So what do they do? They scrounge the city looking for fucking batteries. No, what is one girl's solution?
She has those little glow bracelets. Glow sticks. Glow sticks. She's on a fucking rave or something. I'm like, All right, they don't come out with the light.
Build a fucking fire. Exactly. No, it doesn't occur to them until probably close to the end of the movie that they fell on fire. And then all they have is torches. Yeah.
They don't even have a full fucking fire. They have piddly-ass little torches that fucking go out. Yeah. I'm like, I'd be setting some shit on fire. Really?
Like, there ain't no damn people. I'd be setting buildings, houses. I'd be setting the whole damn town on fire. Yeah. Well, they're in New York, I think.
I could find a building that's set on fire in New York. Okay, you're going to tell me out of the whole entire city.... One truck starts. Only one. There's only a couple of cars in New York.
Yeah. No, they're everywhere. But none of them work except for this one truck. I'm thinking that they're basing it on the fact that it's an older truck, so it didn't have as much electrical. Because there's no other older cars in New York, God forbid.
I'm just saying. I mean, that's what they're going for. I know. I know. But still.
I'm not saying it's not fucking retarded. I'm just saying that's what they're going for. It is retarded. And I'm sorry, but maybe I still hate Hayden Christensen from the goddamn Star Wars movies, but he was. Just fucking horrible in this movie.
I wanted to punch him in his face the whole time. My response to that is, no! Yeah, you were just waiting for whatever it was that was going to come drag their souls away. Hurry up! So he could scream the whole time?
No! Yeah. It's not even him doing that, but he'll never... He'll get the blame. He'll never live it down.
Yeah. We'll all make fun of him and Lucas for the rest of his life. It was just... It was stupid. There's no explanation.
I guess they... What was their final explanation? That, oh, the world's gonna start over? Yeah, like the world reboots itself every certain year. And it only starts back with these two small children...
They're left to fend for themselves. Guess what? They're kids. They're going to starve to death and die. You know why?
Because they're like, what, six? Maybe eight? Eight-year-olds don't know how to spark fires. He's going to scrounge for Twinkies for the rest of his life. For Woody Harrelson.
Yeah. I mean, what? That's a healthy diet, the post-apocalyptic world. Oh, my God. movie was just. Uh having to listen to hayden christian or the hayden christiansen that was talking about the only reason he was still alive was because he willed it yeah he willed himself to still be alive yes that's good was it uh john linguizamo john linguizamo yeah he was actually taller he was sad it's sad when john linguizamo is the most tolerable part of your movie i've always said he's really good as a serious actor In the comedy stuff, they give him crap, and he does this really over-the-top bullshit.
But in serious roles... Hold on. After we watch the movie, boyfriend maybe watch the trailer for The Pest. Yeah, I went to the theater and saw The Pest. Oh, my God.
I want to talk to John Leguizamo just to ask him what the fuck about The Pest. I'm sorry. I don't even know why I went to see that movie. I think I was bored that day. Oh, my God.
It's so obnoxious. But, yeah, but again, I've said for years, it's like every time I see him in stuff where he's serious and he's done a good amount of it over the years, he's just still not known for it, but he's. A good actor. He was good for Romeo and Juliet. His stand-up's good.
Yeah, he was good for Romeo and Juliet. He's even better, like, as much as I think he's a good actor, his stand-up stuff, like, his... It's just performance art. Like, when you watch him, it's not even straight stand-up. He goes into characters.
He does scenes from his childhood. Like, I mean, it is amazing. So, yeah, go watch some of his old stuff that they called, like, stand-up shows. But I'm like, they are just phenomenal to watch him. And then, yeah.
So, I mean, he just needs to not do comedy the way that they usually package it and give it to him because. Yeah, just... It was the best part of that Spawn movie that nobody remembers. There was a good part to that movie? Yeah, that was bad casting, I'm sorry.
Yeah, but still. I mean, just trying to. Anybody trying to do that would have been horrible, but he didn't fit that either. I don't know. I didn't buy him in that.
And he was still better than most things in that movie, I agree, but... Everything about that movie was bad. Yeah. The other movie we watched, yeah, I'm still not sure how. I feel about it, but I think Boyfriend has a growing.
Affection for it after not having seen it for a couple weeks. Freak. Freak, yeah. Yeah, at first when I watched this, I didn't really know what to think about it, but. It's like the more I sat and thought about it, the more I want to watch it again, because it's pretty out there.
I thought about. In fact, I had it tentatively on the list, and then I thought if we end up going to see Alex later in another couple of months, we want to work it in as like a full movie. Yeah, yeah, I think we want to. So we can go light on it right now, and we'll come back to it as a full movie somewhere down the line. Okay, well, real light.
I liked it. I enjoyed it. It was. What the fuck? Completely what the fuck, but you know what?
A lot of it I can see, a lot of it I kind of identify with. Not really. Really? Not like being a mutant, but I mean, the comedy and just the way out there, just love it. It was definitely way out there.
Yeah. And yesterday when. I was at work, I had to work with a guy who kind of looked like Alex Winter after he had turned into a freak. He had the weird buggy eyes, but then he had a weird neck, so I couldn't tell if I could get the. Yeah, it was weird.
I'm going to guess he doesn't listen, so... If you do, sorry. Is that our light version? That also gives everybody heads up. In the near future, we're going to attempt to watch Freaked.
If you haven't seen it, somehow I miss this movie. I saw it. I remember seeing the case for it, but for some reason I just never did go and read it. I don't know why. I only knew it existed because before the movie ever came out.
I swear somebody the whole merchandise world like lost a bet or something because they made big vinyl figures of those characters which are incredibly hard to find now yeah they're it's i mean and we and what's funny is we were like giving them away like that's when i worked at the video store and we just got them in and we're like what the hell is this and it was just like a box of this and another box of this guy. And I mean, we had a good amount of them and they sat there forever because first of all, it was well before the movie ever came out. I don't know if it even opened. If it did, it opened for like a weekend in our city. And then eventually it like took forever to get the video or like nobody ever carried it.
So, I mean, it was like years before it like fully hit cable and people started to know what that was. By then, we'd, like, you know, marked them down to 20 cents and gave them away to people. So the people that probably have them out there probably got a deal on them because nobody knew what the hell they were. But, yeah, it was, like, big 12-inch vinyl figures of almost all those main characters. They didn't really look great, but, I mean, the fact that they made toys for Freak is crazy to me.
I do got to say that I do appreciate the effort they put into trying to off the gender kid. That doesn't surprise me coming from you. He was really frightening. Not at all. And you know kind of the funny thing is.
When we were growing up, we had this one annoying kid that almost looked exactly like that kid that used to hug the shit out of us. And we used to constantly try to find ways to fucking ditch him, you know, just to get. Rid of him. Did you ever throw him out of a plane? No, we never threw him out of a plane, but we had talked about building traps and stuff.
Those are kids for you. To really, yeah, just to really injure this kid. We were talking about building punji traps and all. Types of weird ways to just off this kid. He was.
He was fucking annoying. Oh, shit. Like freaking Rambo. Yeah. Awesome.
And all we watched together. What else did we watch? I know you partially watched this with me, but I watched Detention. Oh, yeah, that was horrible. That was a horrible shit fest right there.
Was that a sci-fi movie? No, because it was even lower quality. Oh, my God. Yeah, you're right. It was an atrocity.
I guess the basic premise. Of the movie was that, like, In the 70s or so, this group of teenagers accidentally killed this other kid by locking him in the boiler. That'll do it. So apparently, when their kids are in high school, the ghost of this kid is coming back. To off them or whatever.
How very Freddy Krueger of you. but uh kind of the same no because it's not only is it the kid it's the ghost of his. Mother too oh how pretty and Jason up here yeah see yeah see. But even more awesome was that their principal was David Carradine. Nice. That's kind of sad.
That's one of the last roles that David Carradine did. Yeah, it was bad. Why did he go from Kill Bill to this fucking movie? Well, no, it wasn't direct route. I mean, if you look at his filmography, David was not afraid to cash a paycheck.
David ended up in a lot of really bad stuff. Kill Bill was more of a fluke. No, that was a Tarantino. That was one of those. Your career has gone to, I mean, it's the same as Travolta.
Your career has gone to shit. I know you're still better than that. Let me pull you out of this crap, dust you off, and put you in this amazing role. And then what happens to your career after that? No telling.
Same thing after Travolta. Went back to shit. Really. I mean, he made a bajillion dollars after that. But most people's opinion of him now is kind of back down to what it used to be.
So, yeah, it's a shame Carradine didn't, even right off the bat, didn't get a lot better roles. He ended up still doing some pretty bad stuff towards the end there. Like this. No offense to Shark Diplosive. Hey, Shark Diplosive was fucking phenomenal.
Shark Diplosive was a bajillion times better than Detention. Yeah. It wasn't Shark Diplosive, it was the other one. It was Mega Shark versus... Because Eric Roberts was Sharknado.
Yeah, okay. Sorry, I fucked that up. Yeah, she was a. Mega Piranha versus Super... Super Gator versus Mega Python?
Oh, God, I can't even remember. It was one of those. Whichever one it was, it was a billion times better than Detention. I mean, I would rather go back to high school and be in Detention than ever watch this movie again. It was horrible.
Wow. Bad. Yeah, it was bad enough I got up and walked up. Several times. Several times.
That's bad. And then after that, I watched Wreck. I'd never seen the original. I watched Quarantine, which I wasn't a really big fan of. But Wreck I really liked a lot better than Quarantine.
I mentioned Wreck a few months ago, however long it's been since I watched it. I liked it, but yeah, again, I kind of want to watch Quarantine just to see the difference. Because I think Wreck is awesome in its own way, but at the same time, it's so. Shaky cam found footage that sometimes you're like, what the hell's going on for a minute? Yeah, the shaky cam was a little...
It got too ridiculous, and not only was he shaking it, but he was zooming in and out. I'm like, bitch, there's no reason for you to be zooming in and out. I can understand shaking because you're fucking running, but zooming in and out is just obnoxious. But I mean, there were some amazing scares. There's there's parts of it that are really creepy so i mean it's it's it's good but i i don't know in a way it could have been like cleaned up so i i assume that's the kind of thing did not do that yeah see that's what you were telling me i was like i assume that's kind of what they were going to try to do with quarantine and make it more hollywood and more audience friendly but doesn't sound like it just seems like they.
Shot more in the dark you could see even less good idea Because, I mean, there was some seriously creepy-ass shit in there. Like, the whole end scene, I was just like, what the fuck is this? What? Oh, my God, no. No, make it stop.
Yeah, that last 20 minutes is a crazy ride. And it's... I guess quarantine just didn't have it for me like that one did. I guess... I don't know.
Whatever. I mean, do we have anything else? I don't think I have anything else. I didn't watch anything else. Oh, actually, one thing.
I'm fascinated with this show. Apparently there is a show, and. I think it's in Chile or whatever, where people that are from Chile, I'm pretty sure it is, it's a contest where they have to. Sing in American songs. American songs in English.
American songs in English sounding like the person singing them. Is it them sounding like American artists? Like, there was this guy who did an Eddie Vedder. Sounded like Eddie Vedder. That's pretty impressive.
Like, you could turn around, close your eyes, and see Eddie Vedder. This guy hit every single note. Nice. Awesome. It's weird because American, not his native language, so it was just...
Yeah, it's just, it's amazing. The Bon Jovi wasn't as good, though. Bon Jovi, not as good. The Bono was pretty good. Bono was pretty good.
ACDC was pretty funny. Yeah. Lady Gaga was pretty close in some parts of it. When she got to the chorus, it was a lot better than everything else. But yeah, I was fascinated.
I sat and watched this for I don't even know how long. Almost as long as I sat and watched the artsy Amber Heard videos that apparently her girlfriend shot. Well, see, we knew she had a new chick, so. I didn't realize that was the proof because there were videos of Amber Hearn. It's all like artsy black and white.
Running. There's some running involved. Now I might have to find these. Hold on. And there's her in different wigs and her just.
Sightly. I wouldn't doubt it. I didn't watch all of them. Are there jumping jacks? There's her doing her sister a piggyback ride.
Oh, that sounds fun. Her sister, not as hot as her. Poor child. Hey, they can't all be. Yeah.
I'm sure that sucked for her her whole life. Seriously. I was like, man, I hate Amber. My sister sucks. I stayed at a hotel down there, and they still had metal keys.
What's a key? Dude, they had a little triangle. It was a plastic triangle and a key. Like a physical key. Not a card.
A key. This was the Bates Motel, right? Dude. Okay. But yeah, that's all.
Being on my ass is awesome. Look up to any better guy. And that's all I have. Amber Heard's awesome. All righty.
All right, I'm done. That rounds out the Geek Week, so we're getting relatively close to the convention here. So I guess we will take a break and come back and check in with you somewhere in the middle of this mess. Hopefully I don't punch that douchebag in the face. We'll see.
Hopefully I don't have to deal with his security after you punch him in the face. I'm pretty sure last time he heard me. Yeah. He was surrounded by guys. Like, huge guys.
Yeah, like, all bigger than him. Yeah, I'm a tough guy, but I got, like, eight guys bigger than me, so. He threatens ghosts. What do you expect from somebody? Yeah, they're really...
He's such a bitch. Alright, so we'll be back. Alright, bye. What have I done today? Too sad to watch the jets fly over.
A car goes by and the sun goes down. We talk about the town. The city's mad in the head and sick in the soul. All the stars flew away a long time ago. Isn't that nice?

Our loving father. Enter a world of freaks. Get back! Stay away from me! The Mutations.
From Columbia Pictures, rated R. Under 17, not admitted without parents. The mutations, once created, they can never be stopped. I don't know why you're not talking to me I don't know what went. Wrong Two people who have so much together Really ought to get along, yeah But something started.
To change inside. Of you And right out of the blue Two friends who such like to give Don't know where you are, what you're going through What are we trying to prove? Is where this world's too big to take on your shoulders Real jackal tears and pain. You could break down in my arms, babe But it really hurts when you turn away We're here with Leah Thompson, and first I have to start off in saying. If.
The teenage version of me was transported here. I think he would have a heart attack and die. I... Yeah, I had a very odd attachment to you. And I guess still do.
But I've tried to move on with my life since then. But, yeah, it was kind of ridiculous at that point. And sort of sappy. I don't... Yeah.
That's so sweet. Yeah, it's really sad. No, you know. I got to play some really interesting characters that people really related to. And I captured a certain kind of, at least with Back to the Future, a certain kind of.
What could I say? Innocence? But not, you know, like a nice innocence. Yeah, definitely. Attractive innocence.
A demented innocence. I certainly understand the demented part. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, I... That was just, yeah, it.
Was very, it's very strange talking to you. Or even yesterday when I saw you, it was, yeah, it's very strange. Well, I'm also really lucky because if I am mostly known for Back to the Future, you know, sometimes it's hard when you see somebody, you know, much older. But because everyone's kind of used to seeing me older, it seems to be easier for people to kind of accept me as I get older, which is nice. It hasn't set in very much.
It's kind of ridiculous how much you don't look your age. And only know because I've been watching you that long. But aside from me, just guess you know me. My point, what I was getting to, is you're getting, I don't know how much you've dealt with fans on this level in the past, but you're kind of doing a lot more of that lately anyway. Is it a weird adjustment?
I guess you're getting that sort of thing from different fans, of how engrossed in their lives that you were at that point. I only know it from the other end, so I'm kind of interested to know what it's like on the other side. Well, you know, it's been a long time. I've been famous for longer than half of my life. I even get that from co-stars, sometimes even.
Famous people, even young people. I just saw a picture of a famous actor wearing a Howard the Duck shirt, a young one, Andrew Garfield. Was he doing it ironically? No, he's a real fan. He was my daughter's in Spider-Man.
With him. And so, you know, I've been really lucky that way. And it's a different. Culture now for stars because it used to be like you try to keep. The fans, you know, at bay.
But now with the social media and everyone kind of competing for how many Twitter fans they have and everything like that, and how important it is that your fans stick up for you on the Internet. Yeah. It's a whole nother ball game. The smart actors reaching out to their fans and, and, um, you know, and embracing them and, and listening to them. And I, that's more natural to me.
I didn't like the other way. I mean, I'm kind of. Shy, but I really love people. So I really love meeting them. And I really love.
As an actor staying in the real world, not just like Richland. Um, It makes it difficult to do any normal performances at that point. Well, yeah, I think you start just playing, I don't know, I don't know. That's all you can play anymore? Yeah, I like to play all different kinds of characters.
And I grew up poor, so I, you know, I don't know, I have problems. I have respect for all. Kinds of economic situations. Everybody. Yeah, I do.
We can get to that. I usually try to trace back where it started. Were you actually interested in film or acting that early on? I know you started off in dancing, but did you kind of know you were interested in that? I think I always kind of wanted to be a performer.
I really loved being on stage. I love.... I love the collaboration. It's so fun to be part of a machine where everybody's working together to create something. And I have such respect for the costumes and the makeup and the lights and the whole thing.
And for me, not playing any team sports, this was kind of my team sport. But I always really wanted to be a dancer, and so acting was kind of a surprise, which sometimes. Does that in life. The thing you want most is not really the thing. You're supposed to do.
There's a turn along the way. Yeah. So, but, you know, it's been a really great ride for me. I really, you know, I just enjoy meeting people and playing different people all the time and walking into weird worlds, you know. Every movie is a whole new world.
Yeah, it is. I mean, it's the ultimate mass, you know, mass-made, handmade thing. You know, each scene you do will never be created ever again. all these people working. Together to make this thing. I find that really fascinating.
That's interesting, yeah. So as you got into dancing, is that, I guess, how did that lead to the acting? Or not at all? No, it did. I mean, I was in a ballet company, and the ballet company owed a theater.
An acting company, money. Nice. So the acting company said, you have to give us Leah. Yeah. Or we'll break your leg.
Yeah, exactly. Which is a big threat, you know. It is. And it's a ballet company. That's important, you know.
So that's how I got my. First leading role in The Little Mermaid in Minnesota for the Children's Theater in Minneapolis. And so I was on loan from the dance company. So, I mean, this guy picked me out of a ballet company to be an actress. So, and I just, I wasn't good enough to be a ballerina.
Ballerina's hard. It's really hard. It's hard, but ballerina's really hard. Yeah, because you have to have, like, the body. To do it.
And constant. I mean, it's nothing but upkeep. It would have been a hard life. You're better off. I'm definitely better off.
I mean, I can still do it now. I mean, I can do it until I'm 90, if I could live that long. So that's a lovely thing. And it's been really. And being a dancer was really good.
For me as an actress. I guess to get into Back to the Future, I mean, I guess all the regular stories have been out there. The last few years, a lot more details have sort of come out on the Marty switching. You were pretty far into the project, weren't you? I guess my question was, how did they take... you?
When did you find out, and how did they go about it? Actually, it was a really interesting story. My boyfriend was making a movie in Germany, so I had flown over to see him. And I wasn't supposed to. And I got, like, it was the old day of phone machines, and I called my phone machine, and it was like.
It's Steven. Spielberg calling for Leah. Beep. Bob Gale. Beep.
Bob Zemeckis for Leah. Leah, please call me. And I was like, oh, no. I'm fired. What happened?
I'm in Germany. And so it just turned out that they had fired him. And it was really sad for me because I had already done a movie with him. And I really loved him. I really love him.
I mean, he's one of those people that I never see, but I just love. Even though, you know, it's been a long time. So it was very sad. Did it seem. I mean, it's obviously very different performance-wise.
I mean, did it seem like a good adjustment in the long run for that movie? I guess it was, you know. It was so interesting to see that footage with him in it. It was very. Yeah, he had a much more serious tone to it.
I mean, we were coming out of the 70s and De Niro and all that stuff, you know, us young actors. And then, you know, Michael came from sitcom. It was a whole different thing. Very different. So he was being more, you know, method.
He was. Definitely. Oh. And then Space Camp is huge. I think that, you know, Back to the Future definitely lays the groundwork.
But Space Camp really, I don't know, I think that drove it home. Catherine was a very likable girl. So I don't know. What was that experience like? Well, it was really interesting doing that right after Howard the Duck.
Because, you know, playing a rock star and then, like, playing a really kind of straight, laced... You know, I was, it was fun. Because I like to shed one character and go the other way. Even in the styles of the work that I do, I like to mix up the styles. And that's what I like to do.
And I'm not sure it's been good for my career, but that's how I like to approach it. And so, yeah, Space Camp, it took a long time. Space Camp is famous because the first day of shooting, we were ten days behind. Yeah. We were so screwed.
It was like no one could figure out how to shoot it. That whole movie ended up being kind of screwed. Yeah. Just timing-wise. Yeah.
That was the worst timing ever for a movie. Yeah, I know. But you did mention Howard. So what do you think going into a project entitled Howard the Duck comes from? Well, you know, I mean, I just come from a project where I was supposed to be in love with my son.
So, you know, I thought it was a good segue to be in love with a duck. You have odd romances in your on-screen. I do. I really do. There's another one somewhere that's really weird.
But I really, you know, it just seemed like a really fun, I love the idea. I've taken a lot of chances in my career. And people love to make fun of Howard Duck, but I think it's kind of awesome because there's so many bombs in the world, you know, that people still remember this as one of the great. Bombs of all time. Yeah, it's epic.
In that, in its own way. It's an epic bomb. And, you know, it's certainly a flawed film, but half the people that come up to me here at Scarefest say that they loved Howard the Duck. I mean, people cry. No, they do.
It's great. They love that movie. It's one of those I, at the time, loved it. And we recently, just like a couple years ago, did a whole show on Howard the Duck. And I found the flaws going back and re-watching it now, but there's still so much of it that's kind of deep-rooted.
And I love the effects on the monster at the end. That's held up. Has it? Because I have to be honest, I have not seen it maybe. In 20 years.
Well, it's not CG. So I just love real, I mean, it's like play animation. They were still doing the work. God forbid they remake it and put CG in. Well, it might have been better if the duck had been animated.
I think so, because the way the comic book was, he was like this big, flappy thing, and they couldn't get the movement right. It's hard to fit a guy in that. Yeah, it was just like the way that, I don't know, the way they could never get it right. It was just before Roger Rabbit, so, you know, they were right on the edge of that technology. They could have thrown that in there.
I think. The real problem they had with that movie was, and I kept telling them, they were so obsessed with the mouth work. I said, nobody thinks that's real. And they had a string of fantastic comedians coming in. And, you know, Jay Leno and everybody wanted to do the voice.
And if they would have just re-edited it with jokes, with good jokes, it would have been good. Well, I think the one thing that came out of our episode, that's the thing. Everybody else that had problems with it, the one thing that came through with you, like we actually got people phoning in and writing and just like, oh my. God, I was so in love with Leah. And it's funny that you, as many problems as everybody had with it over the years, you always kind of came through without getting caught up in that mess.
But you know what? Whatever does and kill you makes you stronger. And everyone has a different opinion. And it's very hard for me because so many people come up to me saying that they love the movie. And I don't want to dismiss my fans and go, you're an idiot.
It's a bomb. You know, it's not cool. And it's also, I spent six months in my car. So, you know, you make daring choices, and sometimes they work and. Sometimes they don't.
It's still, again, it's amazing what they put together with that and spending a million dollars on. A duck suit. And, I mean, it's epic just in them getting it put together, really. If nothing else. Yeah.
Yeah, I know. And, you know, I learned so much. I learned so much about. Filmmaking from the mistakes that people make. Big movies are like, they're like disasters.
It's like standing on the hill in Gettysburg. You're like, don't do it! And they keep doing it. And then I wanted to get to Some Kind of Wonderful, which I, again, attached to that movie in a ridiculous way. I think because I identified with that character.
A little too much. So, what was that tube like? It was fine. Some Kind of Wonderful was interesting because Eric had been fired from Back to the Future. Yeah.
And I had turned the movie down. And oddly, it had a really interesting thing. The director, Howard Deutsch, quit. Then this other director came on and changed the script and hired Eric and Kim Delaney and Kyle McLaughlin. And then she quit and my husband came back.
No, he's my husband. Howard Deutsch came back. Yeah. Fired Kim Delaney. Maybe that's why she's having the problems she's having right now.
And Eric was there, and he was kind of misbehaving, and I was afraid he was going to get fired again. And Howard the Duck had just come out, and I was traumatized. Like, literally shivering. And so they came and offered it to. Me again, and I was like, I better get back on the horse because I'll never act again.
I mean, it was, like, so awful. And so I started the movie, and I was really insecure. And I knew I had the not the good part. You know, the other part was the sympathetic part. Yeah, that one's more sympathetic, but yours has a good amount of depth to it, too.
She could be a really bad character, and you don't play her that way. Yeah, I'm pretty good at specializing that way. I'm trying to make... You know, I'm kind of doing that on. Switch to Birth right now.
But I don't know. It's a super beloved movie. It wasn't a big hit, but it's super loved. You know, it changed a lot, especially men. It's interesting.
Men really love that movie. Maybe. to girls the. Pop world you know but um there's a there's a real depth to that movie that we would kind of made fun of when we were doing it but that people quote that movie all the time and the music the costumes the makeup they all hold up still like i could wear that same costume you could put that on a kid in nickelodeon or ABC Family, and they look cool. It doesn't come off with the cheesy 80s vibe, for something that was geared at teenagers, more or less. It's funny how much that one, more than a lot.
Of them, holds up, really. Yeah, the beginning of that movie is awesome. Yeah, that's one of my favorite movies. It is. It's amazing.
I know, I married the director. And you liked it so much, you married the director. Yeah. Was that odd at the time? We weren't dating, but he clearly had a crush on me.
The story plot of the painting, he had 15 paintings painted because none of them are beautiful enough. That's a little obsessive. I know. He was kind of a stalker, really. Just saying.
It's a good thing he had. A decent job. Yeah. It remains a very precious movie to me because of that. For several.
Well, I guess just to let you kind of tell people what else you're doing, actually looking at your list, you've got more going on right now possibly than ever. You've got a lot of projects going. They're all different. I mean, I was just at the Boston Film Festival with my movie, The Trouble with the Truth. I'm going to the LA Film Festival and the Ojai Film Festival.
That's a two, it's mostly just two characters, three characters. And that's a beautiful piece. And then I have like a big, TV movie coming on NBC in December called The Game of Life. And then I have Switched at Birth, which is a big hit for ABC Family. I'm starting that again.
I have a small part in J. Edgar, a Clint Eastwood movie. And I have another movie called Thin Ice with Greg Kinnear that's supposed to be coming out this fall, which is a Sundance movie. So yeah, I've been working really, I mean, everybody, it's just, it's not big like back to the Future, but I work all the time. It's hard to be Back to the Future all the time.
I know. I know. Well, luckily I had it once. But, yeah, you've had quite a few impressive movies. It's a good career you've got going on.
Yeah, I take chances. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. But I'm an actor. That's what you need. All right.
Otherwise, I think that's about it. I want to thank you for talking to us today. Thank you so much. I just like him around. I don't want to believe.

Don't lose it once. You got it. You've got to do it like you can get it. For good is love, baby. When you can't afford it, you know it don't come cheap.
You've got to find your feet. All right, so we've left the convention. We are now at the Parkette Drive-In in lovely Lexington, Kentucky. So a traditional, old-school 50s drive-in, although they did have video games and pinball. That's awesome.
I'm not sure if that's exactly. I don't think they had burger time in the 50s diners. But otherwise, they were pretty damn awesome. Okay, Misty, what's your wrap-up? Pretty fucking awesome.
My hamburger's quite tasty. Is our favorite part so far that we saw on the menu, they actually serve fried bologna. So we sent a picture to Randy. He was pretty excited about it from what I understand. Yeah, really excited.
Yum. I don't know. I wouldn't... I'm not even sure I'd fully get behind fried bologna. I mean, I've eaten it before.
But it was just because that's all that Bob had at his house. And he's kind of an old school guy. That's all he eats is fried bologna. Yeah, my grandma always used to make stuff like fried bologna sandwiches when he went to order Ford. It's a staple of old guys for some reason.
Fried bologna with mayonnaise and mustard. Old guys and kids, because everybody else I also know ate it as a kid. But nobody in the middle area ever, because I remember eating it as a kid. Because you grow out of that stage. You're like, good God, that was disgusting.
What was I doing? Yeah. Thanks mom but then there's still. Old guys that are like there's nothing wrong with bologna bologna is good. For you you know although i do think it was yeah my dad might have been the one passing along so he might have been the one making those fried bologna sandwiches i don't remember but i do remember eating them as a kid and then i again i don't think i'd had them until i busted it back out at the oscar party and then it creeped the hell out of randy so Now it's just a running joke.
Yeah. Now, fried spam sandwiches. Oh, that's hella good. Yeah, those are good. Those are high-quality sandwiches.
Spam-wages. Oh, Lord. But I have to say that, all in all, the Parkette food was pretty delicious. It was. It was very good.
It was right up there with Super Dogs, I would say. Yeah, I had a Chicago-style hot dog, which, for some reason, wherever I go, I gotta get a Chicago-style hot dog. We are not in Chicago. We're not in Chicago at all. Even when we're in Indiana.
I gotta get a Chicago-style hot dog. But, uh, Yeah, it was good. Granted, it wasn't Super Dogs, but. It was really close. It was pretty close.
Yeah, if I close my eyes, it could almost be Super Dogs, with the exception of. Are you tasting with your eyeballs? With the exception of, they didn't have pickled tomatoes. And that's the only thing. Super Dogs has the little green pickled tomatoes, and I could eat the hell out of those.
Did they have pickled cauliflower? No, they didn't have pickled cauliflower. As we saw earlier. Get out of the Peddler's Mall. Do you want to cover the other stop we made on the way here?
It was pretty rowdy. Yikes. Yeah, across the street from here, actually, is a peddler's mall, which, as most of those, is pretty ghetto. But you find some awesome stuff. We find a lot of really cool things.
I found some trading cards. I found a complete set of Phantom. You know what I mean? The Phantom. The Phantom.
The Phantom. Starring Billy Zane. And Catherine Zeta-Jones. And I also bought a complete set of Jaws 3D trading cards, which I'm pretty excited about. Which has Lea Thompson in it, thank God.
And I also bought a pretty awesome lamp, and I bought a book called The Beastmaster, which is in no relation to the Mark Singer Beastmaster, but still looks fucking awesome nonetheless. It's a fucking rocket ship involved. Yeah. Which, that just would be awesome if they had Beastmaster 4, or Dargo's the Space, or something. It's like an old, well, I mean, they already traveled through time, for God's sakes.
But, no, it's, yeah, it's like old-school pulp-style, like, sci-fi... But, yeah, it's the Beastmaster, which if you didn't buy it, I was going to buy it because it was awesome either way. It was pretty awesome. I think I got a couple comic books from the 60s called the Drag Racing comic books. And a lot of the artwork and illustration in there.
I haven't read through it completely, but I know Ed Roth did some of it, so that's kind of cool. Nice. I better grab mine. I have to read it off. Hold on.
Let's see. Both of which I picked out. Yeah, I think you ID'd at least. You spotted the ones that I got. The first one is Popular Photography Magazine from 1948, the November issue, if you've got a stack.
Up at home. Yeah, basically, it's awesome anyway, just old magazines in general is awesome. But this one in particular has an interview with Alfred Hitchcock on my most exciting picture, which was rope. And there are some behind-the-scenes pictures of him shooting rope. So it looks pretty awesome.
And if you flip to this one page, there's a naked face. One thing I don't like about. Who's naked? Hold on. One thing I don't like about Park Heath, I'm going to tell you right now, their ice is too small.
It keeps getting sucked up in my straw, and I keep wondering what the hell I'm biting into. I don't like my drink to have a texture. Boobies. I know, right? Boobies.
1948 boobies, by the way. I was kind of surprised. I was extremely surprised. That's not regular. It's art.
You remember the art study cards I've got? She's out in the waves. Now, if that wave wasn't in the way, we'd be getting full frontal hair. We'd be getting all kinds of frontal hair. I'm telling you.
Mm-hmm. It'd be extra arty then. But yeah, so I got the... That's timing. The Alfred Hitchcock interview from 1948.
And then this, I don't know what this round vinyl disc is. Is it like a frisbee? I think it is. A frisbee with a hole in the middle. But it is.
It's more aerodynamic. It is a special vinyl copy of music inspired by, really small, Star Wars and other galactic funk... By Mecco, which if I remember correctly, Mecco is the one that put out the little 45-size single that I had as a kid. The front side, the A-side, was the Cantina Band song. as it normally was but the b-side was a weird disco version of it that frightened me even as a child and the only thing more frightening is the artwork how would you describe this uh fucking awesome rodriguez uh artwork we've got going on in this uh star wars too. Much boogie to handle they got boogie in their space.
Pants yeah it's a guy and a girl um that he's wearing some sort of purple outer space. Suit you're gonna paste it you're gonna put this on. I'm gonna have to put this up on the uh i'm gonna have to make a special added uh photo because yeah it's her in an orange space suit with a she's got the fishbowl helmet going on on top and He's just got some sort of like old school Captain America. Flash Gordon. Yeah.
I don't know what his outfit is. But they are totally boogieing and bumping their parts. I don't know. There's some sort of. They're doing the butt.
They're doing something. I don't know. In front of a big orange planet with giant rocket ships going behind them. Like old school Flash Gordon rocket ships. It's pretty freaking awesome.
It's spectacular. And I can only imagine everything on there is terrible music. Everything on here is funk-filled. It's funkalicious. It's funky.
Oh, right. Other Galactic Funk. That's all it says on side two, by the way. Other Galactic Funk. I wish to acknowledge the unfailing cooperation of the Galactic Council.
What is that? Why does it say that? Hold on. The logistics of teleporting all the musicians from their home planets, the translating computers, the laser engineers, and the photon system courtesy of Telcon PZ88. 4.
Earth Rep Tony Blacca, Blacca? Whatever. I wish to acknowledge the unfailing cooperation of the Galactic Council, in particular Neil Bogart, Irv Beigel, and Jimmy Litter. That's awesome! That is too much bullshit to put on one album. craziness.
So, those were our. The one that's inside, too, is just other galactic funk. I told you, that's awesome. Those were our finds for the day. Anything else convention-related, other than the fact that Leah Thompson was standing next to me just a few short hours ago.
I wanted to punch douchebag into the face. I saw him, and boyfriend was getting aggravated at me, because I couldn't hold him back by anger. I wasn't getting aggravated, it's just. Go ahead and discuss the most aggravating thing, which was the line at his table. There was more of a line at his table than anybody else's.
That's ridiculous. And I want to talk about. For a second that I got high-fived by Lance Henriksen when I suggested that they write a pop-up book because then I would totally read it because his book. Didn't have enough pictures. We were waiting there while Brian was getting it signed.
I'm like, does it have any pictures? And he was like, yeah. And so the chick was trying to find them. There was like one. I'm like, dude, for serious.
Some artwork done by him. There's a bunch of original artwork of different movies that he was in by different artists. So it does have some really cool stuff in it. None of which, sadly to say, was pop-up. I told him that if he'd write a pop-up book, I would totally get it.
And he said it made libraries more cool or something. I don't remember what he said. He got pretty excited when you mentioned the pop-up book. I did. I tried to high-five over that shit.
Lance was awesome. Leah was awesome. That's most of who I hung out with so far today. Yep. Anything else on the convention?
I feel sorry for Billy. Nobody cared about Billy. He sat there playing games on his iPhone the whole time. We do. Billy was on our first episode.
Zach Galligan? Yeah, Zach. Gallop? Galligan? Galligan, yeah.
Zach Galligan. That's what I said. I did it wrong. Zach Galligan, Billy from Gremlins, which I was trying to get a hold of him and we could have invited him to sit in with us and talk about He could. Have came and got a fried bologna sandwich.
He could have had a fried bologna sandwich, but yeah he was our first guest on our official first episode. He had some people at his table, just not near enough. I felt bad for him. People are slacking off. They should really support Billy a little bit.
I wanted to get Phyllis Rose's autograph, but They didn't have any pictures of the scene in Sleepaway Camp with her making that face. The scene, the face. You know what she's talking about. If you're not, why are you going to bother and not have that? She had one picture from Sleepaway Camp.
Bitch, that's all anybody knows you from. It really does seem like bad planning on her part. I don't know. She had, what, two. Sleepaway Camp posters.
But I wanted the picture with the face. Yeah, the face would have pushed it over the edge, I'm telling you. But no. No. There wasn't even any at any other booth.
Usually there's one booth that sells a bunch of photos so they can make more money off people. No. Fuckers. I don't know. Makes no sense to me.
I don't care. I stood next to Leah Thompson. She touched you. She touched me. And she signed your picture that you are her density.
I am, in fact. Screw you guys. I am her density. That's awesome. And I talked her out of signing the other photo.
Good duck. her beverly photo she was like i should have signed it that and i'm shaking my head no no no don't do don't don't do that really it's just not a good idea no not so much. But she was pretty cute she's ridiculously cute her dress was bright her dress was bright to balance out the fact that 99.9 of those motherfuckers there were wearing black t-shirts i. Know i was one of them so. Hey i'm wearing a tank top i'm wearing a black. I'm telling you that's what we do We know our crowd.
Shit. Dude, we all kind of match. We're all wearing black shirts, dark jeans. I got a plaid shirt on. I got a plaid shirt.
White. Kind of brownish and gray. We're branching out. The basic essentials of what we're wearing is kind of the same. We know we're horror geeks.
We're going to the Horror Geek Convention. We know what we're doing. Yeah. All right. I guess that's the wrap-up for the food and convention festivities.

And now, on with the show. It's time for SOFA THEATRE! Urgent call for the Noé base. My friend Noé has been left by VAL. We are refugees in the middle of the forest in the Grand Batis.
We are not finished! Noé base, over! The plague is. Completely healed. How much time do I have.
Left? Bonjour. Don't let it become one of those days. Pump, pump, pump inside your head. Alright, we're back.
We are once again on the road. Attempting to do the movie and yet not die. Although Misty taking photos the entire time while we're driving and recording. Yeah, this may be the evidence that they pull out of the wreckage that they can try to piece together what happened. After the fire.
We're still alive so far. Hopefully this recorder is like a black box and will be the only thing that survives the fiery approach. I'm a good driver. Until yeah until the flash goes off in your eyes all right well assuming we make it through we'll uh go ahead and run down the movie so all right so it's time for moving on sofa theater feature on the road obviously this week's sofa theater feature is mutants let's. Be backseat theater um if we were in the drive-in i guess now we're like traveling down the road.
I had the same question when we were in Chicago in bed. But I said, it's when you watch it at home, which, didn't you watch it at home? Yeah. We were just talking about it on the road. Oh, okay, yeah.
This week's Super Theta feature is Mutants. The year is 2009. Director Robert Morley, which again, if you look it up on IMDb, they have it wrong. So if you go looking for this guy. According to the actual poster and trailer, it's Morley with a Y.
If you look it up on IMDb, they have a T at the end. So, once again, never wrong IMDb. Never. The plot, according to IMDb, there isn't one. Yeah, I saw that.
Once again, IMDb being a little laxed on their details. They don't give a shit about porn, too. No, no. So, this, uh, yeah, as she said, this is a foreign film, so we're pretty fancy. We watched a French movie.
We are fancy. Okay, so, in looking a little further, there is a plot on Wikipedia for some reason, so. The wiki's got every damn thing. Well, it's also on your Netflix, but I just went with the Wikipedia. So, the plot, according to Wikipedia this week, A virus has transformed the vast majority of humanity into bloodthirsty zombie creatures.
Marco and Sonia are a young couple fleeing the mutants and trying to fight their way. Into a military... They weren't really that young, by the way. No, they weren't. Especially him.
Compared to, like, really old people. They had to have been in their, like, upper 30s. Mid-upper. A semi-young couple fleeing the mutants. There we go.
Trying to fight their way to a military base. But when Marco himself becomes infected in an attack, the pregnant Sonia must fight the worst enemy, the man she loves. All right, so that is the. French film Mutants. So with that, even though that kind of already throws out some spoilers.
Spoiler alert, because... We will continue to spoil the hell out of this movie, so... Spoiler alert, there are mutants in this movie. You have been warned. You can't.
Where would you like to begin? I kind of like this movie. I ain't gonna lie. It kind of reminded me of, like, a bunch of other movies that are kind of like this, but this one was. I liked it better.
It seems like it did a lot of stuff better. I don't know. I'd try to compare it to Stateland. There was no uplifting parts in this movie at all. It was all dark.
It was all realistic. And it was all very, very grim. Yeah, pretty much. But, like, from the beginning, it throws you right into the middle of this world, and... You get fucking blindsided.
Yeah, and like Stakeland, there is no safe place, it seems like. Yeah. But yeah, you said you liked it better than Stakeland. I liked it better than Stakeland. Stakeland just hit a lull in the middle.
It was just like. It did at a couple points where it kind of got slow. This one never seemed like it ever got slow. See, I have exactly the opposite take on that. Really?
I'm sitting there watching and I'm like, and I kind of like the setup. Like, the beginning's kind of cool and it does throw you. Oh, the opening. The opening's The opening's awesome, and then, like. I don't remember anything, but that girl in the ambulance with the girl standing in the road, and the ambulance all packed out of nowhere.
Yeah, I know. I was like, holy shit! I thought they were gonna pick her up. I mean, it definitely has a hell of a kickoff there, and then as it gets into it, like, to me, that whole middle section is just really slow. I mean, by the end, once the, you know, you get to those last 20 minutes or so, it picks up, and it becomes a totally different kind of pace, but.
I don't know. To me, it's... And even more than. I don't know. I think I still like Stakeland a little better.
Do you like Stakeland because it's got Daniel? No. I mean, she's not even in it a ton. I think I just. I think Stakeland sort of fleshes things out a little better, where this one.
It just seems like they never even try to. Like, it's okay, we're in this building, and then we just sit in this building. For the rest of the movie. So, I don't know. I guess, but I don't know.
I think I had more issues with it. But go ahead with what you liked about it. I liked the feel of the movie. I liked the visuals. The cinematography of this movie was beautiful.
I'll give you that. Almost every shot was beautiful. Everything about the scenery, the location, the building they were in, the way. It was shot was beautiful. Everything about it.
Was, as far as visuals, that's why I liked it better than I liked stapling it. To me, it was more visually appealing. I'll give you that one. Yeah. At Stakeland, they did a competent job.
It looks okay, but they don't go out of their way to make everything look really good. This one, I will say, visually is impressive. And that's why it held my attention more and it didn't seem boring to me because I was so watching out for all the shots that were amazing to me. Yeah, which there are a lot. I mean, it's, like I said, from the get-go and the first opening scene, In that first opening scene, that's what I noted.
It was like, this is really artistic. And it's like really taking. It's time and making sure that it works in all this artistic. You know, everything is... It's not a bullshit artsy-fartsy kind of way.
Well, again, I mean, it's French. It could very easily fall into that. But when it's populated with a weird virus zombie plot, you know, it. Definitely comes back to old-school horror and gross out. And, you know, it comes back to...
Well, there's a shit ton of splatter. Yeah, there's some gross stuff going on in this. So it doesn't surprise me that, you know, it still sort of doesn't lose itself in the artsiness of it. But. At the same time, visually, it is really amazing to look at.
I gotta say, I was confused by the black chick. I thought it was a dude. Yeah, okay, I'm glad it wasn't just me. When she talked, she sounded like a dude. And I'm like, she looks all feminine.
Or not. I was just kind of like... She had a very girly face. She had a very feminine face. But when she talked...
Yeah, when she got out of the. Ambulance. Out of the ambulance, I was like, wow, man, those French military uniforms aren't very flattering on their ass, are they? This guy's got, like, childbearing hips. He was a chick, and.
I was like, oh. I wouldn't have known if they hadn't said, you know, referred to her as she. I was questioning it, and thankfully, then they said she, and I was like, oh, okay, good. Yeah, I was questioning it. Yeah, I was still sitting there going, because, I mean, it's not in her favor.
If she was wearing, I mean. Her hair is done in the way that both genders wear it, so that didn't help. Again, I don't know why in French it somehow made it harder to tell from what she was saying. Dude, she had a manly voice. But she had a manly voice on top of that.
And then she's wearing, like, body armor, basically, so you really can't see, other than the childbearing hips, you. Can't see much else. Her voice was bigger than Jay's was. Yeah, I know. So, yeah, she was very manly.
That wasn't really a... I don't know, if they were trying to convey... I mean, I don't know why you would put a woman in that role and then not just go ahead and make it a woman. Like, if you're going to put that someone that manly in there, just go. Ahead and get a man.
You know, but still, I mean, all the characters were very, they're very believable. There were no, like... No, she was good, yeah. Yeah, there were no, like, I mean, these look like average people that you would see on a day-to-day basis. These weren't, like, you know...
Model perfect. Model, yeah, model perfect people that are thrown into this situation. I mean, they look like The chick could definitely pass for a medic. The guy could pass for an ambulance driver. The other chick could definitely pass for a military.
She was military. She was. So maybe that's a little more realistic than we're used to in movies. Yeah. Certainly American movies.
Well, yeah, you're always ready for the hot military chick that can kick ass. Or somebody you just. Don't buy, like the Mina Suvari is the kick-ass military chick in that Day of the Dead remake, which was horrible, but I still, like, not a minute did I ever buy Mina in the army. I'm sorry. That's just.
No. I liked the cast. I mean, they were played well. I mean, I had my. Problems with the chick, the main chick, but it wasn't because of the acting.
It was because she. Was written as kind of a stupid-ass character. There's a lot of stupid decisions that get made. Down the line. There is, but then...
It's kind of realistic to me. Yeah, it's kind of realistic because, you know, she's a medic. How many times do you think it's crossed her mind to be in a situation like this? Probably never. She's busy thinking about her baby and thinking about medical stuff and the.
Man that she loves. So her job... going to be really kind of just not right. I think it's not even the bigger question. Every once in a while, there's one major one I went, whoa, whoa, whoa. But sometimes, especially later, as we get to the end, there's a couple of times that I'm like, what did you just do?
Yeah. We can get to that, but. You said you were comparing it to other movies, which... I mean, there's several that, to me, it felt like it was taking from, but... To me, it had some aspects of, like.
You said, Steakland, and 28 Days Later was the kind of virus that it is. To me, that's what I was going to say. Like, it very much felt like it was almost trying to be 28 Days Later, at least in the style of... Just the way that it's shot. It's like, he also shoots really nice shots, and... even the movement like the way that the sometimes it would do very like realistic running.
Shots or sometimes it would be a boyfriend man he wasn't a big fan. Of the running shots yeah you know i don't like jerky cam shots it's like i know you're running you don't have to jerk the camera around but. They kind of worked some of that in 28 days later it had a it had a very similar visual style. To what he was doing in 28 days later so that one's the main one i saw but what else did you. Have any kind of movie of this genre, there's, like, stuff you can pick out that's like, oh, well, this is, like, I can't even think of an example now, but just, like, any horror movie or any zombie-type movie where they're on the road or anything, you know?
I don't know. It's hard for me to, like, I don't know. And, like, there was parts of it that kind. Of reminded me, not really, but kind of, of Cold Prey. Yeah.
Because there's scenes in that, I mean, that's in a different country completely, but there's the stark, winter and desolation of it. The feeling that you're trapped in the middle of nowhere. Possibly nobody going to help you. You are all you have. That right there is just terrifying.
That's one of the differences between this and Stakeland. With Stakeland, they were always on the move. This one, they had nowhere they could go because it was cold. They just stopped. They were out of gas.
They were surrounded by crazy mutant Puma people. You know? I don't know what these mutants were. They looked more like hairless cats to me. With foreign auspices.
With foreign auspices. That's the thing, they never explained where this came from. Yeah, no they didn't. A lot of times it's something like, this happens, you're not going to know what the fuck happened. Yeah, and it didn't bother me.
It didn't bother me that I didn't know where it came from. And they didn't try to dummy it down with, you know, shit tons of flashbacks or anything like that. Or find a way to work in some incredibly detailed explanation right in the middle. Which a lot of them have done. Well, this is what happened.
Let me explain it to you piece by piece right here. I don't care. Like, they happen to catch a news channel, right? When they're explaining everything. Right at the most opportune time.
Isn't that nice? I'm telling you. But. They do a very slight explanation at the beginning of the film. In subtitles.
Which means you gotta read it. A virus took over, took out most of the population in a couple of weeks, basically. But it's not over-complicated. They don't over-explain. They don't beat it into your head.
It's just barely. Mentioned, you know. I mean, this definitely has a more narrow. window of what you're looking at comparing it again just because we just watched the game but i mean that when you get like a nationwide almost worldwide view of what's going on and how messed up things are and you get more of an educated view where these people are still completely in the dark It's still really new is the difference. I mean, state plans have been going on for a year or two at least. So they really do kind of know, oh, we've heard this about this part of the country.
There were news reports going on where this. One just hits out of nowhere and they're left with nothing. So they're still piecing it together. And then we never leave that building after that, so we don't even see the rest of the world. So it's definitely a more narrow view, but it doesn't make it any better or worse.
It's a different look at that same situation, basically. I think that's what makes it more terrifying. It makes it more terrifying, more scary to me. It's the isolation of it, I guess. The isolation and uncertainty.
Because at least in state land, they're moving around all in. And they're running into different people. It's the friendly village that they're in. At least they're getting to be around other people that are going through what they're going through. It's the being stuck by yourself.
And having to deal with the man she loves is fucking... Injured. Dying. Yeah. Uh pulling the dumb goddamn teeth out which i was cringing i was oh i have nightmares that's my most recurring nightmare it's about my teeth coming out so i was like oh god anything but that no and the sound as they came out oh.
But just that i don't know it's the fear. Of isolation i'm always i'm afraid of being alone i'm afraid of being alone i'm not even in the house by myself I get creeped out and scared, you know? But just that idea that there's nobody anywhere around that can help you and that you have to deal with this on your own, that scared the hell out of me, I guess. I'll say that this is really a scary, scary movie, but just the situation. Yeah.
Again, I think that was one of my favorite parts when they drove up to the building. I think you got that whole, like. emptiness of it you got that sort of you know desolation was there. Another thing that you get like another thing that kind of reminded. Me of was the shiny i was thinking session nine yeah it's it's i mean both of them you get but i don't know pretty quickly to me it sort of left that and it entered into that other area i don't know i really like the beginning when they get to that building i like the shots of the building but it seems like then they don't do enough with it like you really don't get any scope Of the building? Yeah.
Yeah. And I'm sitting there thinking, okay, you got this huge building. You're going to tell me that you can't find a safer place to hold up in? You know? What kind of building was this?
I know. We never really found out. Like, at first, I was like, is it a hospital? But I thought it was a church. And then it doesn't seem like one.
And then I was like, is it supposed to be? Yeah. I was like, I don't know what it's supposed to be. Then later I was like, is it... Like, it almost looked like a complex of some sort.
Like, people were meant to live there, but then it didn't look like apartments or anything. So I was like, I don't know what... Like, it was an institution? Yeah, it looked like some kind of factory that had people living there. Like, almost like...
Not really a power station, but... It was weird, yeah. Something along the lines of. That, you know? I mean, it obviously...
Was able to power itself. Like, she never figured any of that out either. Even as she's calling, she's like, we're in this giant building. And, like, she didn't seem to know what it was either. No.
But she knew enough to turn on the backup generator. Yeah. So. I guess we can get into him. Being infected.
So... How exactly did he get infected? Because... The blood. But they said the kid had autism.
Okay, we'll go back to the... There's a scene where the... Oh, yeah. I forgot that one. There's a scene towards the beginning where Sonia, Marco, and the army chick, they stop at this gas station.
Yeah. And they go in, and there's a bunch of dead people. they're just all bloody and gross apparently they stink because even our girl can't tolerate that shit but anyway out of nowhere this fucking kid like popped up and attacks her ass yeah out of nowhere anyways then uh marco yeah. They find out he's autistic which i will i will give him credit this is the first time i've ever seen a zombie scene with somebody who wasn't a zombie like they played that And continued, like, until the end of that scene. Yeah. Pretty much treating him like he was a zombie.
Even after she said, no, they still, he was still kind of crazy. They still did what they did. I'm just like, it's really weird that, like... You know, anytime that scene takes place, there's a zombie. So it's like it was weird that all of a sudden they're like, no, no, we're calling it off.
Yeah. And it still kind of continued. Well, another thing, too, you were asking how he got infected. That kid could have been infected. He could have been.
He couldn't have been full blown. He couldn't have been full blown or he could have been immune to it like that girl. Yeah. So. Spoiler alert.
Or was he already infected? I don't know. You never knew. We never really figured that part out. Anyway, spoiler, after the kid attacks the army girl, there's a.
Scuffle, and she ends up shooting the fuck out of this autistic kid. Like, not even a little bit. Again, that was when it was still in that. kick-ass like you know really hold on for the ride kind of part of the movie and that was really cool like that scene everything that went on there i didn't see coming you know it's like that whole scene was really original I like that. Again, it sort of takes that turn after we get out of that. But, yeah, everything in that scene I thought.
Was actually really cool. Yeah, you don't think they're going to shoot the autistic kid. Yeah, a kid. And on top of that, an autistic kid. Not really a kid kid.
I think, well, a teenager. Yeah, he's a little bit older. But he was, yeah, still, he was pretty young and he was confused and scared and she. Shot that boy. Yeah, she shot him because...
She didn't want him tagging along. She didn't want to deal with him, basically. Yeah. Didn't he attack her? Who did she attack?
Did she attack him? Yeah, he attacked. He attacked. He just kind of was running at her like he had been. I mean, he wouldn't do anything any more ridiculous than he'd been doing before.
Yeah, I don't remember him. He went after him, actually. Yeah, because he was, yeah. Because he was standing in front of him. Yeah.
Yeah. And then later he got, like, ricocheted, didn't he, or something? I don't know. She shot him. She just shot him.
I couldn't tell what it was. She was shooting the kid. Yeah. And it went around him. Well, of course, the kid was right in front of him attacking him.
Yeah. She just plowed him. Yeah, and he just started shooting. Which got her shot in the goddamn face. Yeah.
That's what's happened. You don't start shooting random people. Yeah. And I know somebody had pointed out on. Netflix, on one of the Netflix reviews about how, you know, how this bitch is like, they're like, the nurse chick was so quick to pull the trigger to kill the army chick.
But yet, when it comes to a couple of the other scenes where she had to save somebody's life, she was real hesitant. Yeah. And I thought about it more. Well, that chick was going to already shoot her husband. Exactly.
He was going to kill somebody. He was going to harm somebody that she loved. And she just lost it there. Whereas the other parts, she had no attachment to these people and was really kind of not really sure. Whereas.
And a lot of times, it's a little wrestling. You can't get a clear shot. Yeah. But, yeah, I like the same thing with her husband. I mean, it was her husband, so she just automatically, you know, got shot in the neck and then in the cheek.
The one in the face. The one in the face. The face. Again, not expected. I'm like, okay, this is going to be one of their main characters throughout the entire movie.
There's going to be drama later on. It's going to be a big deal later on in the story. No, they offer right away. That's what it felt like. So, yeah, again, that part was very different.
Didn't see all that coming. Yeah. Because I was like, damn, it's the army chick. You need the army chick. Why would you kill her?
Oh, well, whatever. She was bossy anyway. She was, but. So, it's Once we get to the point that he is infected, here's my first question. So it heals you?
It heals you before it kills you? Well, he's mutating. Yeah, he's mutating. He's not really dying, remember? They're not zombies.
They're not zombies. It's a virus. People will lose their damn mind. It's not a zombie movie. It's turned them into some kind of weird animal.
Again, I always say for all practical purposes, it plays like a zombie movie. But technically, it's like a rage virus kind of thing more so. That transforms people into big hairless poop people. Yeah. With four nostrils.
And they call them cannibals at some point. Yeah. But it's still, like, it... That, again, seems like a weird title. It seems like it doesn't fit, really.
Mutants. Well, big, hairless poopy won't be too long. Yeah. I don't know. It just seems like there's a movie out there that probably more fittingly needs to be Mutants.
This one just, I'm like, well, I mean, I kind of get a little of it, but it just, I don't know. Again, it almost is more misleading if you didn't know. I mean, I at least went in knowing it was more of a virus. Movie and a zombie movie. But, yeah, I think if I just saw Mutants, I wouldn't expect this movie to come out of it, so.
But, okay, so, yeah, he's healing up because he's mutating. But then you're saying, you were talking about the teeth. Oh, my God. That was my thing, though. I'm just like, okay, wait, let's talk about this illness because what good zombie doesn't have his teeth?
You need your teeth, damn it. I was like, what's he going to do, knob them? That's what I'm saying. But then he grows in his fangs. I guess.
I was just like, dude, you need those teeth. What the hell are you doing? You're going to have to eat your girlfriend. Wasn't it supposed to be in the sling? Oh, okay.
But yeah, and my problem with her was, all right, yeah, he's the man you love. You don't want to kill him. Restrain the fuck out of his ass. He is insane, losing his shit. I would have your ass strapped down so fucking hard.
He was naked and covered in blood. That's never hot. Before that, by the time he was having the morphine freak out, I'm like, he would have been locked in a room somewhere. He would have been, if not chained. Down to a bed, he would have at least been, she would have found a room that she could bolt him into with a steel door that he could not get out.
Of until she figured out what the fuck she was going to do next. I don't understand why she just didn't give him the morphine. I didn't know. I thought maybe she was running out at that point or something. Oh, I don't know.
I thought she just didn't want him to come and at him. I'd have doped your ass up, dude. Really? I would have done the same thing. Knock out, be happy.
Float away. Oh, God. Yeah. No suffering. Just go on your morphine high, you know?
Just chill. So it's, I guess, to get to that next scene where he is naked and covered in blood. Why? Other than it makes for a jarring image, I was like, why did he strip down and throw blood all over himself? Because also, the little bit of blood that was there was not that much blood that was all over him.
What do you mean? The blood in the bucket that she drained out of him. Yeah, I mean, there was a little blood that she drained out of him. There was a little bag going into him. Yeah, but the thing is...
It was covered in, like, buckets of blood. Well, it wasn't really buckets of blood. I mean, it's... Yeah, he could have. He could have grabbed that bag off the thing and ripped it open and was just smearing it all over.
Himself because he's crazy. He's crazy. At that point, he's crazy. Crazy people do crazy things. They get naked for one.
And they smear stuff on them, whether it be blood or poop. You know this from experience? I do. I've seen some crazy people on Barksdown Road. They get naked.
Covered in poop. They didn't necessarily cover themselves in poop. But they were out naked dancing on the street. But I have heard of caca smearing and craziness. Going hand in hand.
So, just, you know. If you see somebody smeared with, uh... Well, that's Marlena. Didn't she used to work with old crazy people? Did she?
She worked next to old crazy people. Oh. So... I don't know. I mean, at that point, yeah, once he's...
He is, like, stark, raving, mad, crazy, chasing her, going to kill her... That's the point when she opens the door. It's like, what the fuck are you doing? Yeah. Yelling at her.
Don't you fucking open that door. What are you, stupid? I mean, there's a lot of steps before then when I was giving her the benefit of the doubt. Okay, you love him. It's looking bad, but you don't want to admit to yourself.
Okay, okay. But by the time he was coming at you, ready to kill you, and 30 seconds later, she opens the door. And then tells her right before she opens the door, I can't control myself. I don't know what's wrong with me. I was like, what are you doing?
Oh, you can't control yourself? That's okay. Oh, man. I understand. So, and then it enters into that weird thing of, okay, so he sort of goes back and forth, like he regains some sort of consciousness sometimes?
I don't know. Like he just loses control momentarily. I guess. Well, yeah. Great virus-like.
Yeah. Well, for his, he can go back. I guess. For a certain amount of time. I don't know.
Because that continues later, so it's kind of weird that It's like, I don't know, could everybody turn it off like that? Because everybody else just seemed like stupid animals. I mean, once it reached a certain point, once they. You've got to understand, too, at that. Point before then, she had tried to transfuse her blood into him.
And he was, like, hopped up on ingesting her blood. Which, part of her blood, granted, she handed an immunity to this virus. It may have caused some other kind of mutation, you know, where he was still. Slightly. I mean, you could see in the movie, he still knew who she was.
Yeah. Even though he was nuts. Maybe that's part of it. Maybe it is. He was the only one that had that put into him.
Yeah, he's the only one who had it transferred. Yeah, so maybe he's the only one. That's why he's the only one. Like, all the other ones seem like idiots. So, I mean, he's...
Well, they're just. They're mindless. Yeah, they act on animal instinct. Yeah, they're just mindless. They're hunting in packs.
They're killing people and beating the crap out of them. Or biting them. We're gonna talk about Frank. I fucking hated Frank. Yeah, Frank was a douchebag.
Frank is a douchebag. He couldn't die fast enough. About three quarters of the way through this. Yeah. A little before that, yeah.
It's like... two-thirds of the way in you still gotta go ways while. They're sitting there because you get a lot of frank being a douche. Yeah she's you know her and her marco sonya and marco are still in the building and she starts flipping out because she hears people breaking in so she thinks the fucking mutant doesn't know what to get her ass it's frank it's worse than the mutant it's frank and. Yes as it always is in these situations yeah and that's what girlfriend commented on. She's like, even with all these monsters, the biggest monster turns out being Frank.
That's what it always is. Yeah. It's Night of the Living Dead from the first time out we did this movie. It's 28 days later. Yeah, 28 days later.
Every time you learn when everything falls apart, the worst thing you can fight. Against isn't what you're fighting against, it's the other people around you. Yeah, so Frank is an absolute dick. Him and his slutty ass girlfriend. Does she even have a name?
Slutty girl slutty girl and uh injury dude I don't remember. His name either his buddy yeah and then the uh poor man's uh Riddick crazy brother crazy brother. Yeah the guy with the machete who's kind of badass A little bit. He still got his ass eaten. Was that the brother?
I don't think they were related, were they? Oh, no, he was the crazy guy that picked up. The other guy got injured trying to save his brother, but he didn't. They picked the other guy up along the way. Yeah.
So they weren't related to him. He was one of the only redeemable characters. Him and the injury guy. I liked injury guy. Yeah, the other two guys were okay, really.
Injury guy and fake critic, they were okay. If they would have shown up by themselves, they would have been okay. They probably would have helped her. Yeah. They would have picked everything up.
Yeah, Frank was a douche. Frank was like, if your creepy friend Sean had a dad, that'd be him. Yeah. Anyways, so Frank decides he wants to take the ambulance, which ain't got no fucking gas. You ain't going anywhere, bitch.
Yeah, they end up taking, what is it, the poor Manzaretic guy takes his machete, and him and the chick. go somewhere. I don't know where the hell they went. Tunnels. Yeah, some tunnels where he got gas and she was going to. They don't over-explain some things.
So you have no idea where the fuck they're going, what they're doing. He kind of said something, but at that point my eyes were kind of... It was impressive. Kind of blurring in and out of being able to read the subtitles. But he kind of takes a little bit of pity on her and lets her.
Go and use the radio to contact Noah. No, that was their deal. She would get him the keys. Yeah. He would get her the radio.
So it wasn't pretty bad a deal. He wanted to go bury his family. Yeah. Yeah, I guess. Still, though, Frank would have just beat the crap out of her and taken the keys.
You know. So let's get to the tunnels, because there is some bullshit going on. Okay, what's the bullshit in the tunnels? I don't even know. It was, she, again, I guess her not being able to get a clean cut, so she just stands there with a gun while the guy gets sassy.
Yeah, he gets bit. That was a whole lot of me just, like, being frustrated. Again, we get to that last half, and at least it actually picks up. It's like, at that point, like, there's creatures running around all of a sudden, like, well, the husband, like, Is the one that does his, like, crazy zombie call? Yeah.
He's in the basement where she locked him up, which, again, finally. The call didn't happen until she got back from the tunnel. Yeah, when she was, uh, after Frank beat the crap out of her. Oh, Lord. Because, yeah, it was, they went to the tunnel.
There was already some mutants in the tunnel. Yeah. So that went on. Got in a fight. Boy got eaten.
She ran back to the fucking building with no keys, no gas. A mutant's following her. Frank flips out. Beats the shit out of her. Yeah, because he's wanting the gas and he's wanting the keys.
Neither would she have because she's like, I'm talking about the dead guy. He gets ready to shoot her and she screams out her husband's name. And that's when he does the crazy mutant Puma call. With four nostrils. Do you remember Stubbs the zombie could do the same thing?
He could, couldn't he? That's true. He could rally his troops. He whistled. That's pretty much what this was.
It was just sort of like he threw this out there. I love that game. We haven't played that game in a while. I love Stubbs. Stubbs was pretty fun.
But anyways, so. Yeah, then the cavalry came running all of a sudden and they were, the whole building was just sort of overrun with mutant zombies, so... At least at that point, it gets kind of entertaining again and it gets back into the action. But at that point, I just wanted to smack her because all she does is like long stuff. Like everything she does.
No, just shoot him. Why are you standing there? No. Everything she does is frustrating. Why would you run to the basement?
Yeah, just everything she does. I'm just like, why are you doing that? That's the dumbest thing you could do in this situation. So there's a whole lot of that. It becomes very frustrating in that part.
And to me, if. If you're already not really sure where you are and what's going on in there, and if or if not, there are zombie mutants around the corner waiting. To kill you, is a smoke bomb a good idea? Yeah, what the hell was up with that? What the fuck was that?
Frank's a dumbass. What do you expect? I know. Yeah. As they're like, I'm like, you were the ones that needed to be able to see.
Yeah, I know. They probably have mutant senses and they can, like, smell you over there. Exactly. He fills a smoke bomb out. I look at girlfriend, I'm like... the fuck is.
That supposed to do yeah that's real good now you can't fucking see him dummy like dumbass oh. There's a blind oh shit i can't see either oops i was like it'd be different if you had a plan and that was to cover you while you like got away or did something but like no they just stood. There yeah like oh good now i also can't see in addition to not knowing what's in here and where they are and if they're about to kill yeah Because, I don't know, then there's a whole lot of, why didn't she shoot? Yeah. There was a couple of times.
Why did, why, no. So, I don't know, whatever. Frank completely dicking over his slutty girlfriend. Yeah, what the hell is that about? Like, why bother?
It's Frank looking out for number one. But why even bother having her? I mean, it doesn't even seem like it was putting him out to have saved her. He was just a dick. Yeah.
And it's just like, nah, I don't think so. You weren't really that good. Yeah. So it's not like he didn't have time. He could have opened the door.
She could have got in real quick. Yeah, he was standing right there. He could have done it. He just stood there and watched. I'm like, what a jackass.
It's all right. He didn't last much longer. No, he didn't. So it wouldn't have done her much good to make it in there either. I don't know.
The zombie could have got Frank and she could have made it right for it. She could have been the sole survivor of this fucking movie. Oh, good. I didn't like her either, though. Fuck her.
Frank probably would have thrown her down just to get away. Yeah, probably. So then we get the husband. Reappears and we get like some zombie on zombie action. Yeah.
Then we get back to that. Like he snaps back into husband mode and realizes it's her. And it's sort of keeping some level of his consciousness enough to beat the hell out of that other zombie who was trying to get her. Yeah. Yeah.
And other than that, then we just kind of get out into the little yard there. Yeah. Which, again, is a weird situation. Me and Jay were like, all right, are they actually going to save her? Or are they going to realize she's been bitten and they're going to shoot her ass on spot?
Yeah. Which is kind of, again, very Night. Of the Living Dead. So it could have gone either way. It's just like they're taking her word that she's immune.
She said that on her radio call. Like, I'm pregnant, I've been bitten, but I'm immune. Okay. Yeah. I mean, isn't that what everybody always says?
No, it's not affecting me. I'm telling the truth. I don't know. Let's ask Greg sometimes. Everybody always says that.
Greg, have you been bitten? No, not this. It's a cut. So, I don't know, do we decide, did he attack her in any other way when he went to the stomach area? No, he just, it.
Didn't seem like he did, but then I've, yeah, I've seen other people really confused by that. No, I think he just kind of, he was, he knew she was pregnant. He was sort of nuzzling the child. And, yeah, and I think he just was scaring the crap out of her. Yeah.
Which, what the hell is that? Yeah. If he was still conscious of it, why is he being a freak? Maybe he was only conscious on a certain level. Maybe he wasn't fully conscious.
Maybe it was, like, a little part of him. Just enough to keep him from killing her. Yeah. So maybe it's... I don't know.
If it was just enough to keep him from killing her. But mostly... I guess so. Yeah, that's a really weird thing. Especially as she hits...
Because at the end, she's holding their stomach, and there's no, like, blood or anything. Yeah, there's not blood everywhere, so that's why I thought there wasn't anything else, but I've had other people. Because if you gnaw the fuck out of her stomach, you think they'd be able to do blood. Yeah, yeah. Just a little.
Just a little bit. A big old shark fangy-fangy would have done something, but, you know, nothing. Oh, so, I mean, once we get to the chopper, are we planning sequel? We're going to the chopper. Get to the chopper.
To the chopper. I don't think there'd be a sequel for that. You think there'd be something? We're not kind of waiting for her to have a goddamn mutant baby. Yeah, no.
That's what I'm wondering what they're going to do with that. If the baby's going to be immune and be the savior of what's left of humanity. He's going to come out being a thundercat. He's going to give birth to Lion-O. Panthor.
They look a lot more like Panthor. Yeah, yeah. Or it's a panther. Thunder. Thunder.
Thundercats. Which you were holding the Sword of Omens earlier. Dude, I was so fucking, I wanted that so bad. But it was $ 29. It was like a letter opener style Sword of Omens.
Oh, it was awesome. You push a little button and it scared the bitch out of me. It like shot out. I was like, oh. I thought that I broke something.
I was like, oh. I want that so bad. It is awesome. I need one of those too. I need to look on eBay and.
Get a cheaper one. It was awesome. So, I don't know. If it had been full size, I would have got it, but it's like small. Yeah.
Full size. That would be pricey. Hell yeah. So, is there other stuff we want to get into before I wrap up. On this one?
I don't know. I don't really like this movie. I don't think people like zombie movies or anything in that genre. I think you might like this movie. It's not a zombie movie, but it's got certain aspects that are kind of like it.
It's got most aspects of a zombie movie. Yeah. Aside from actually how they met him to die. But it's just... You might find parts of it boring.
I didn't. I fancied it. That was my take on it. I just... There was that.
Big lull in the middle for me that I was just like, I wish there was more going on. Again, it still looked good. Like, along the way. Like, I think visually it's interesting all the way through. I think that director definitely has... handle on the visuals and I think the visuals are what got me through it without being bored probably so impressive visually.
To me there were several times I was trying to think some of the I mean right off the bat you get all those shots of like the trees they're kind of just weird the way that they're shot but then like when we get the shot of the water they're washing out the ambulance that's an awesome shot and then or just the driving like the high speed driving like that that was kind of again done in a different style than everything else so he's also kind of like not just one type of thing like he works in several different types of stuff um the shot of them like holding hands as they get you know as the girls out there which by the way and let's talk about that shot where she uh well again this is the beginning so no big spoiler she shoots that guy that was in the ambulance that looked good like i don't know how they shot because like you get like blood spray and like stuff off of his head and i'm like did they really just shoot that guy because that looked pretty fucking.
Good it was from a distance, but it just, the way that he reacted, the way. Everything sprayed off of it looked, you know, timed perfectly, like, I was. Like, I think they just killed that guy. It's a snuff film. But yeah, I mean, that stuff was good, and even like, I don't know, that i guess the big one like that the hole in the door shot is.
Awesome like you kind of remind me of the shiny. Yeah yeah definitely But it's done really creepy and very suspenseful. And you're waiting for him to stick his head through there and scare the crap out of him. But he never does. I don't know.
So I think definitely visually, I mean, this guy has a handle on it. I've got a problem with that lull, but again, the beginning and the end are still pretty action-packed. So it makes up for it. It's definitely worth seeing. I just, I don't know that it's, amazing but to me the visuals were pretty amazing.
So i was lured in by that the first the first scene yeah like with the. Girl running through the woods the very the very very beginning it's like i guess they're having like a little zombie field trip or something they're all just kind of hanging out in the woods or whatever yeah there's. One girl all bloody running through the woods and and you're like you're like is she safe is she gonna be okay is she gonna make it i think she's gonna make it i think she's gonna be the main character and she makes it to the road and she stops in the middle of the road and then i'll be. Damn there's the ambulance and it switches. The fuck out of her yeah really you should know not to stand in the middle of the road damn it it.
Like final destination explodes her ass didn't your parents teach you anything damn. You know the scene in Final Destination where the girl gets hit by a bus and it catches you so unaware? That's what fucking happened. It was kind of like this. Although I was pretty sure something like that was coming.
I knew something was going to happen, but I didn't know she was going to get hit by a goddamn ambulance. Yeah. That was a good shot, too. That came out of nowhere. I don't know.
I thought it was awesome. Yeah, I mean, that whole opening 20... Again, the first 20 and the last. 20 minutes are pretty damn entertaining. And I really wanted to like this movie, too, because I picked it and I didn't want to pick a shitty movie.
See, I don't care. I like to watch stuff regardless. I'm picky. I don't want to watch shake stuff sometimes. My boyfriend wouldn't let me watch Drop Dead Sexy.
I just wasn't in the mood for it. I like Jason Lee, don't get me wrong. Jason Lee's awesome. And he's a cool guy. Crispin Glover's fucking nuts.
He's bad shit crazy. He is, but I'd probably hang out with him. Would you? Yeah, I would. That means I have to hang out with him.
I don't want to hang out with him. Oh, Lord. So does that wrap up... We can hang out with Jason Lee. Jason Lee's pretty cool.
Does that wrap up mutants? Yeah, I think so. Bloody good time. There's lots of blood. Naked mutants.
And some weird sort of mutant-like people. I don't know what the hell they are. You see a naked man-ass covered in blood. That's exciting. Man-ass.
All right, so with that, I guess we'll say, okay, kids, get out your decoder pens. For you members of the Secret Circle. Okay, I got it out. I thought you were doing the fanfare, Misty. There it is.
It is time for the movie out on Secret Circle. We'll be able to have the next exciting feature. Sparkle, sparkle. Which again, next week we will continue with our coverage of Scarefest. And we will see who else we can rope into it.
I'm trying to see if we can pin down Marlena, but good luck on that one. Yeah, because we've had enough of this shit. I believe we've got Lucy roped into it. And we should, if all goes well, have a special guest for you next week. Plus, hopefully we'll rope some more interviews together.
So we'll rope some people into that. You just want to rope me into it? Yeah, I'm not going to argue that. I don't know how she would feel about that. Or her husband.
But anyway... We will see if we can rope somebody in to do an interview along the way. And if nothing else, we hopefully will have an extra special guest on our Sofa Theater feature next week. So with that, I will give you the Sofa Theater feature, which will be, and this is a big one. I've kind of left this one alone for a while because it's almost daunting.
We're going to do Aliens. Aliens is one of the most awesome movies ever. So for me to try to do it justice is going to be, I'm kind of taking it seriously. So we're going to see what we can do with aliens next week. Aw, man, I'm not going to be on that, because I've got some funny stories about aliens.
I'm sure they will resurface on another episode. Yeah, I guess. Alright, so with that, we do want to say thank you to Scarefest. Thank you! Thanks!
Okay, Brian, you're home. Get out of my car. We haven't wrapped up the show yet. That was the wrap-up. We do want to say thank you to Scarefest.
They let us come in there and conduct our ridiculous business in the middle of Scarefest, and Actually, I had fun and got to hang out with Leah for a few moments. And Lance was awesome, and Misty got high-fived. Pop-up books. So, yeah, it was lots of fun. So, thank you once again to Scarefest.
Again, go to thescarefest.com and find out more about next time around, because it is an annual event. So, go head for it next year. Okay. Anything else you need to wrap this thing up? Aside from get the fuck out of the car.
No. With that, we will return next week. Same time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening. Bye.
