About this episode

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #2 - Jay's Mixtape of 80's Teenage Heartbreak We're back with another episode of "Attack of the Killer Soundtrack!" And this week we hit the road to record a road trip edition of the show. And what better location to kick-off our new running feature the Killer Five! So with that Jay puts together his own mixtape of 80's Teenage Heartbreak. With flashbacks on each movie song and how they fit into his own emo soundtrack. Plus Bryan mixes things up with a few additions of his own! And Misty provides her own commentary on the trip and the music at hand. So load up the car and come along for the ride!  And as we reminisce on how awesome Charming Charles is, we also mention... charismatic frontmen, hot Grandma, John Schneider, Australian bands, Cooter's Place, The Cure, Cave City, Catherine Bach, being in the friend zone, Guntown Mountain, wearin' the Daisy Dukes, the beyond weird kid, team Molly, living in the past, Starter for 10, getting stuck midname, all the rejection, all the anger, acid-washed jeans, a one-eyed skeleton, naked Shawn Michaels, Jon Cryer, a huge adult bookstore, Michael Hutchence  and a backpack full of cassette tapes.  "If there was a soundtrack made of my miserable high school existence in the 80's... what is most fitting of all the things I went through."

Guess who? It's 10 o'clock. Do you care where your parents are? This episode is rated M for Misty. Yes, that's right, this is a Misty episode, so it will be laced with profanity even more than usual.

If you're not comfortable with this level of profanity, perhaps this isn't the episode for you. But we have many other episodes to choose from that do not feature Misty and will probably be far less offensive. Okay, maybe. With that having been said, on with the show. Defense Corps forces reported just moments ago.

This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not the drill. At this time, we are requesting the immediate and orderly evacuation of the vicinity. The Coast Guard and the Navy have been alerted and are standing by on the eastern seaboard. And it continues to burn out of control.

It has been regular. Every five to ten minutes, there has been another convoy of units, fire. Companies, paramedics. A citywide emergency has been declared. Police officers are still on tactical full alert.

2,000 National Guardsmen are standing by. Air defense warning read. We're doomed! It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack. The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final hour of hell.

MUSIC PLAYS. What's up? Welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack. I'm Brian, and today I'm coming to you from inside a vehicle. Right now, we're moving down the road.

And with me, luckily it's somebody else here because I'm not recording and driving, so then the car would have to... Anyway, we've got somebody behind the wheel. We have Jay. Hey. If you're familiar with the cast of the other Movie Meltdown show, you'll be quite familiar with these two.

Jay and Misty. Hey! The infamous Misty. Is that good or bad? That's usually bad, isn't it?

Infamous. Infamous. More than famous. A plethora of songs we have for you today. So, we've had a running theme on our show of road trip episodes.

Anyway, that's just sort of, you know, I think every week is sort of a a movie geek adventure. What are we doing this time? All right, let's see what happens. So we, we ended up going different places and talking to different people. And I thought with this one, you know, we, it's sort of a theme with movie meltdown in general.

So we'd go ahead and spill over into this other show. But at the same time I started thinking, I'm like, well, and where else did you like, initially put together your own playlist like before you had your iTunes before you had an mp3 player like where were you putting together you know your own little play you're like oh we're going on a road trip let's see I gotta play this I gotta play that I mean that's kind of what you used to do anyway back in the day before technology made it really easy to do all that stuff so I don't know I thought this would be more of a retro kind of hey let's pick some songs we want to play for other people while we're all jammed in a car. Are we telling them where we're going.

If you that was my next thing is you know being geeks that we are. None of my songs are going to be relevant to where we're going. No, but we might as well. I mean, we are going somewhere pretty fucking awesome. So, I mean.

We are dorks. You guys, it doesn't tie into movies very much. I want to tell them. I want to tell them where we're going. Which is why I didn't plan a whole, you know, episode around it.

But I thought we could have fun doing an episode on the way there. So, okay, Misty, where are we going? We are going to the Dukes of fucking Hazard fanfare, bitches. I'm so fucking excited. Oh, yeah.

The humanity. John Schneider. I love me some John Schneider. He has aged remarkably well. A whole lot better than Catherine Bach, who looks kind of scary, I guess, would be a good term.

Maybe. That's being nice. I've seen some other pictures lately. She can clean herself up and still look like Catherine Bach. I've seen some scary.

She had some work done. I've seen some scary pictures people have thrown out on the internet. But, you know, everybody looks bad on a bad day. I don't look bad on a bad day. So, you know...

It's all about how you present yourself, I'd say. Hopefully she's not wearing the Daisy Dukes because I don't need to see that much of Catherine Buck. Oh, come on. We all need to see Daisy Duke, actually. So, yeah, I was just like, just the fact that that goes on is kind of amazing.

It's going to be rowdy. And I needed to see it. It's like, regardless of your feelings at home about Dukes of Hazzard, Misty loves it. Fucking A, I love Dukes of Hazzard. I got fucking John Schneider's face.

Bo Duke is on my goddamn leg. He's hanging out with Corey. Permanently. Corey has friends. Yeah.

So, yeah, I'm just like, regardless of your feeling, you have to admit this is going to be an amazing adventure. Do we need to keep like a running tally of how many times we hear yee-haw and or the General Lee horn? If you'd like to. Because you know we're going to hear... You know, at least once.

If you'd like to keep like a stick count as we're there, maybe we can check back in later. Or good old boys. Have you ever heard good old boys referenced? Oh, so many yeehaws. It's frightening.

I fucking hope so. I'll be disappointed if there's going to be yeehaws because I'm going to be fucking doing it, dude. Yee fucking haw. Right there. Oh, Lord.

Well, if nothing else... I think... Cooters. We're going to Cooters, for God's sakes. Cooters.

Do you have any comment on that, boyfriend? You're sitting there shaking your head. No, I don't. I would say, if nothing else, it's going to be a good time. That's kicked off our music for this episode.

Yeehaw. Everybody shake. Everybody groove. Everybody shake. Everybody groove.

Mary, Mary, you're on my mind The folks are gone and the place will be mine Mary, Mary, I wanna be with you And this is what I'm gonna do I'm gonna put a call to you Cause I feel good tonight And everything's gonna be right. Come on, baby, it won't take long.

Only take a minute just to. Sing my song. We're gonna have a. Good time tonight. Rock and roll music gonna play all night.

Come on, baby, it won't take long. Only take a minute just to sing my song. We're gonna have a good time tonight. Rock and roll music. Gonna play all night.

I thought, Misty, you would appreciate that. Both of you, I think you're both into this movie. That was Good Times from In Excess and Jimmy Barnes from the Lost Boys soundtrack. Dude, I ain't cut none of my Lost Boys songs. That's all fucking rowdy.

So, yeah, I thought that was a nice fitting way to kick off this little road trip adventure. I love In Excess. I'm telling you, it's one of those that's... And it was funny because I was already familiar with them. I feel like I at least, for somebody in this country, was tapped into them a little earlier than the rest of... yeah you you.

Too same here yeah i don't know uh god i don't even know how i came across in excess it was probably from one of my friends but yeah i knew about him way before any of my friends or anybody that I actually knew in school did. Yeah, I mean, they didn't really hit until Kick. No. And I already had... I mean, I'd been listening to the Listen Like Thieves CD.

No, wait. The Listen Like Thieves cassette tape. Cassette tape, yeah. I had that shit on vinyl. I had.

Well... you retroactively did, but I was listening to it on cassette tape back in the day. And like it, it's, I love that album. Like it was an awesome album. And that was when they were just some weird, you know, Australian band that nobody knew anything about. And I think, I mean, they, again, they, it's funny that in this country, that's still where they were sort of just crossing over, but they'd already put out like five or six albums in Australia.

Like they were a well-established Australian band when that just sort of crept over here. And I mean, I still like a lot of their stuff before kick. Yeah, I do too. I went back and bought all of it. I think that's some of the best stuff.

Yeah. You know? There's stuff, yeah. A lot of that stuff on a couple albums before that. I had that very first album.

When you can tell, it's an early band. It's a different version of NXS than we came to know. But even the stuff on that one's really great. They were always a good band. And just continued to get more polished and more amazing as they went on.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a frontman more charismatic and just amazing than Michael Hutchins. He's just watching him. He's perfect. As far as what you think of as a quintessential rock star lead singer, he's fucking amazing. And he was fucking sexy as hell.

I ain't gonna lie. You know... I'm not going to argue with you on that. No, because I wanted to be him in high school. Yeah.

And unfortunately, I ended up looking more like the saxophone player. But even Michael Hutchins, in the early days, he was so awkward and gawky. I watched some of the earlier videos. It wasn't until probably almost listening to Thieves. That's when the hair finally got his look.

He sort of came into his own. But that's like most people. I mean, when you're younger, you're in that kind of gawky stage. Some people a little bit longer than others. I know I was gawky all the way up into my mid-twenties.

I'm still working to get out of mine. He definitely outgrew his, though. Especially by kick. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, that's the thing. Like, he. And that's what it was. It wasn't just the look. Like, yeah, he, by that point, was pretty damn pretty.

Yeah. But he also... It was. It was just charisma. Like, he was just a hell of a front man.

And, like, when he was on... And that's one of those I have to say I'm pretty... thrilled that I actually got to see them live. It was a stadium. I was way the hell back there. When you die, can I have your NXS shirt?

No. Oh, you fucker. Maybe I'll get buried in it. Oh, you suck. We can dig him up.

He'll be dead. I'll put an alarm system on. It's not going to stop. It will explode if you break it. She doesn't care.

I hire a lackey to do it that way. They take all the mess and I clean it up. No, no, I'm taking it out with me, though. It will blow everything. Dude, you suck.

Anyway, though, I mean, that was one of the best live shows ever. Like, it was amazing. And that was the point they were pretty, they had a hell of a lot of money thrown at them. So there was this light show that, I mean, just like, not even like cheesy lasers and stuff, just like the spotlight show was like, so perfectly timed in with the music like it was just a well put together production at that point so yeah they they were amazing live they were amazing even back when they first started it's yeah an underrated band as far as i'm concerned especially for one that got so mainstream but still like never got the recognition they probably deserved. Are they still touring with their shitty replacement.

Don't know did they stick with that guy from the dumb tv show i have. No idea i watched the show just because i was like this is a train wreck i gotta see what happens. It really it's it's kind of sad like it's just sort of like. Nobody you can't replace michael. Hutchins and that's the thing like you can't do it anyway but it's even worse when like his friends did it you know it's like it'd be different if like a bunch of strangers decided they were going to do this show but like It was guys that grew up with him.

Like, they'd all been together for years. Some of those guys were brothers. Like, they'd all literally grown up around each other. So, for them to just go, eh, never mind. Let's pick somebody new.

Did they just go, hey, let's pick somebody new? Or were they forced by studio execs? Either way. I mean, at that point, I would have thrown out the band. I'd be like, you know what?

Let's just start another band. We can hang out if we want to, but... Don't use the name. Don't sully the fine name of InXS with anybody else. It's so hard when it's the lead singer.

It's one thing if you're replacing the fucking keyboard player, the guitar player. Even the guitar player, it depends. I mean, it's true. It's no offense to anyone else in any band out there, but that's the most distinctive thing about your band is if you have vocals, your lead singer creates the sound probably more than anybody else. Aside from ACDC, I've not seen any bands that have successfully switched lead singers and had, if not, probably a more successful career.

Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, Journey doesn't really count because they weren't as big before Steve Perry, I don't think. And they took a huge, like, lapse there. I mean, they disappeared for 10 or 15 years. There's been other bands, hasn't there?

There's been a lot, but not many that have kept that same level. Like, ACDC is one of the few that sort of continued on. Yeah, I can't think of anybody else right now. Because, yeah, even your, like... What was the, Judas Priest did it, didn't they?

And, like, what was the other, another big metal band did it? But they were probably early in their career when it happened. NXS had been around for how many, you know, they'd been around for a couple decades. That was the end, like, almost the end of their career. I wouldn't say end of their career, but.

The last album they did was pretty good. But, you know what I mean. Weren't at the height of their career. They'd already passed their height. A lot of bands that can replace a lead singer, it happens early, early.

Maybe one or two albums in. NXS had how many albums with Michael Hutchins? Twelve? I don't know. It was a lot.

They weren't at the Chili Peppers stage of their career. They were a few albums before that. I guess we've gone into NXS quite a bit. So we can move on. Music And now it's time for some Blaxploitation Appreciation.

You're damn right. So the other running theme, I don't know how familiar you guys are, but I've been trying to work in some awesome, awesome music from Blaxploitation. So this one was just one I came across, and it's from 1973's Gordon's War. The music, most of it on the album, is credited to Badder Than Evil. And this song is Super Shine No.

9, with vocals by Sister Goose and the Ducklings. You've got to love Blaxploitation. I'm sorry, it's amazing. Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. Super shy.

Number nine. Super shy. Number nine. Both side up. Like a dog goes side.

Super, super, super shy. Number nine. Number nine. To your feet. Number one.

On the street. Make you look so sharp and fine. Super, super, super shine. Number nine. Number nine.

You'll be big daddy cool No girl's gonna tell you no, no, no Daddy, you'll short. Circuit her ever-loving mind. Number nine. Every drop on time. Super, super, super shine.

Number nine. Number nine. If you leave the theater, folks, please be careful. Don't let this happen to your car. Be sure to remove the speaker before you leave.

If you should accidentally pull the speaker loose, please turn it in at our snack bar or box office. It's war, baby. The battlefield is Harlem. The enemy is junk. The general is a cat named Gordon.

Me! I give the orders. He spent four years in the NAMM fighting someone else's battle. Now he's back to fight his own. and a foolproof plan. As you can see, we're well prepared.

Step one, infiltrate enemy territory. Are you Big Pink? What do you want? Step two, cut the supply line. Gentlemen, we have a problem.

Our largest New York franchise is having distribution difficulties. Step three, harass the hostiles. Step four, search and destroy. I bet he got his head right here. I'm through playing with.

You, Luca. Watch your teeth. Step five, knock out the heavy artillery. They said it would take an army to get dope out of Harlem. This is an army.

And this is Gordon's War. It's just, I love that's the thing. Like, even movies that you weren't familiar with, sometimes they have this amazing soundtrack. Like, they put so much, you know, great talent and time and effort and money to record these amazing albums that, like, you know, the movie itself didn't do well and it just sort of falls by the wayside. But, like, there's still this, like, a huge amount of albums out there that are just filled with great songs.

Nothing else. They have fantastic titles for their bands, you know. Badder than evil. The names of their songs and their... It's entertaining, if nothing else.

Don't jive me. So, as previously stated, on this show I wanted to bring in, you know, different people as we go along. So it's not just me picking the same stuff I like over and over. Not that I won't do that for as long as I feel like it, basically. But I do want to mix it up, and I do want to get other people's input, and other people have, you know, different tastes and different takes on stuff.

So we're definitely going to hit, you know, pretty much everybody in our own crew, and then we'll try to bring in special guests as we go along. Special guests. Not your kind of special, but we'll get to you next time. No Velcro shoes? I did not wear my Velcro shoes today.

I left those at home. Thank you. You're welcome. Anyway, so yeah, I thought this time we'd go ahead and while we're jammed in the car here, we'd go ahead and work in some of yours. So since we just had a Misty Heavy episode recently, and if not, go back and listen to it.

You call me fat. Misty's heavy. You call me fat. Go ahead. Please continue.

Thank you. Carry on. If you missed it, yeah, go back a few episodes. It's Laced with Profanity. You'll recognize it.

It's got Misty all over it. So I thought we would start with Jay, and then next time around when we do the next music version of this show, we will get to yours, Misty. It's time for the Killer Five. Jay, I think you described yours as trying to put together your five-song mixtape of 80s teenage heartbreak. Yeah.

I guess for people that know me, my birthday's coming up pretty soon, and I'm getting older. You're gonna be old. Yeah. Shut up. It happens.

But, yeah, you know, I'm one of these people that have a tendency to, I guess, live in the past a lot, and... I usually revisit the 80s maybe every Friday or Saturday night. Yeah, and I. Have to hear it. Flashback.

There's a lot of Cure involved, and I am not happy with that. There's not that much Cure. There's some great Cure songs. Any Cure is too much Cure. There's a few that I'm not a fan of.

No. But there's some great Cure songs. Yeah, there's great Cure songs, but it's no Friday, I'm in love shit. Yeah, I'm not big on that one. No.

Okay. She just doesn't like any Cure songs. Boys Don't Cry is awesome, man. Yeah. That guitar riff is badass.

Anyway. Yeah, anyways. Okay, so do you want me to list off what you gave to me? Yeah, you're going to have to because I'm driving right now, and if I look back, I may end up in a wreck. Did you want to go in a specific order, one through five?

Yeah, I specifically put them in order. Okay. You put way more thought into his than I did into mine. Yeah, it's almost like a mixtape. I was thinking of.

Research involved and it wasn't research it was just yeah I was like man if I was stuck in a movie and if there was a soundtrack made of my miserable high school existence in the 80s what songs would I pick in what order and what is most fitting of yeah what is most fitting of all the things that uh I pretty much you know went through and you know I I guess in high school, I wasn't a nerd. I was actually kind of shunned by the nerds, but then I was even shunned by the jocks and the geeks. Actually, I was just pretty much by myself. I was the really weird, I was the beyond weird kid. I'm kind of right there with you, so I won't call you out.

But yeah, I don't think I fit any little classic 80s movie niche. No, like the closest I've come to is a lot of my friends... A lot of my girlfriends, and I mean that as girl friends, because I was in the friend zone a lot. Were you ducky? I was ducky.

A lot of people always referred to me as ducky. Not ducky. I love ducky. What's wrong with ducky? I would have picked ducky.

See, everybody says they would have picked ducky, but you know what? They don't. I did. Fuck. I picked you.

Depends on which ducky you're talking about. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Okay. The real world Ducky you probably wouldn't have.

No, no, the real world Ducky you wouldn't have. Because he was based on a real person. And those allegations that have been made about Ducky's character over the years, turns out they're kind of true if you base it on the real person. No, I don't know who it was based on. Well, it was Molly Ringwald's friend that she grew up with.

I mean, he wrote the screenplay, but she had a lot of input on adding the Ducky character. Yeah, now I remember. Giving the Ducky character his style. Yeah. And people always went, whatever, Ducky's gay.

And she was like, well, I hate to break it to you guys, but my best friend growing up was gay. So the real world Ducky character she based it on actually was gay. In the movie, he's just a weirdo. Well, I was just a weirdo. I mean, I'm not gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Well, no. No, I mean, girlfriend always says I have gay tendencies. You do like more chick movies than me. You know what?

I just go everywhere. I am so crazy. I don't care. I love everything. I have no boundaries when it comes to movies and usually music.

Certain other things, there are a few boundaries. No, you know, whatever. All right, so... Do we want to start with number one here? Yeah, we want to start with number one.

Okay, number one. We haven't written a list for a reason. Hell yeah. This wasn't Jay's random order of 80s heartbreak songs. This is Jay's specific order.

The specific mixtape to get it to build and swell so that by the end of it, you really totally get your James. All the rejection. All the anger. Well, not so much anger at that time. Just mostly.

Angstiness. Yeah, not even angstiness. Emoness. Emoness, yes. Emoness of the 80s.

The sitting on the newspaper, been in the rain up against the wall kind of thing. Yeah. I get that. I still do that sometimes. I was putting it together going, God, I was so pathetic.

This is going to be really depressing, isn't it? Yeah, kind of. No, actually not. Because, you know, now that I look back on it, I actually enjoy a lot of the songs. Yeah.

You know? And I don't get depressed about it. Sometimes. I get more depressed about being old, but I, you know, they're great. They're great songs.

So definitely go with that. Number one is teenage kicks by the undertones. Now that's not depressing. That one wasn't depressing, but that one's more of the, Hey, you know, Hey, I'm kind of the, the new kid coming to school kind of thing. It's the opening, the opening of my, it.

Gets us into your wonderful teenage years. Story arc. Yeah. It's my story arc. Every time she walks down the street Another girl in the neighborhood.

Wishes mine, she looks so good. I want to hold her, want to. Hold her tight. The teenage kicks right through the night. And it's the best I've ever had.

I want to hold her, want to hold her tight. Get teenage kicks right through the night. I have teenage dreams so hard to beat. Every time she walks down the street, another girl in the neighborhood. Wish she was mine, she.

Looks so good. I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight. That teenage kicks right through the night. I'm gonna call her on the telephone. Have her over cause I'm all alone.

I need excitement, oh I need it bad And it's the best I've ever had I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight That teenage kicks right through the night. From Starter for Ten? Yeah. Yes. I fucking love that movie because it has Benedict Cumberbatch.

That's an excellent movie. The best part of that movie was Benedict Cumberbatch and his acid-washed jeans. He was so sexy in them acid-washed jeans. No comment. It was a good movie.

Great soundtrack. If you haven't watched it, check it out. Very cool. It's set in the 80s. There was so much fucking Cure in this movie.

I swear to God. Wasn't there like four Cure songs? Let's hope. I'm like, are you fucking serious? Is there anything other than Cure in this song?

Did Cure fucking sponsor this movie? I don't know. I think maybe the guy who made the movie really liked Cure. That happens. Cure aside, it was a really good movie.

It was quirky. Okay. Um, I don't know if I know this one by title, so you say the title of the New Order song. I gotta look at it because I can't remember. E-L-E-G-I-A?

What's the proper pronunciation? You know what? I don't even know how to properly pronounce, pronunciate it. Because you're asking me. Elegia?

Yeah, you know. Eats the fuck out of me. Yeah, I don't know. I always just call it Elgia, but. i'm kind of a moron so i don't normally that's the thing i've never you live in the middle of nowhere or not so much nowhere but you you you grow up in a not great how do i put it you grow up in an area that's not very cool and you're not surrounded by record shops and and and cool artistic people you're mostly surrounded with rednecks and jocks and so you don't really get uh learn the proper pronunciations of a lot of songs and shit like that. That was also like way pre-internet.

So it's like you didn't have any connection to the outside world to tell you how to pronounce this stuff. You had to wait until you bumped into somebody from the city, you know. And then they would laugh at you and tell you you're doing it wrong. Yeah, what's wrong with you, idiot? That's not how it's pronounced.

So, yeah, I'm sorry. I probably mangled the name of it, so. I mean, usually you just kind of read the tracks. You don't hear it. So regardless, this is by New Order.

New Order. New Order's a great band. Thank you. so so. And that was there. There's the pretty and pink tie in there.

So yeah, lots of that used in pretty and pink. Lots of it. I don't know. I had, I was the one that was not on board with pretty and pink. I had so many issues with it.

And I think you're on the other, you're in the other camp. You were team Molly ring wall. Um, I was just not, like, I just not, I did not really get into her. It's, I don't want to say I was, you. Know, I mean, I liked her, but then I liked, I liked, basically, I liked any girl that would look at me.

But then again, it would be always the, oh, you're so nice, you know, kind of thing. But no, I mean, I liked the movie more or less because I could identify with John Cryer's character, aside from the soundtrack being good, but. You know, it's another one of those like when they it's always frustrating when they have those movies of like, oh, there's two guys and they're fighting over the girl and she's got to choose. And usually I'm like, neither of these is the right guy. And that's what that was like.

Really? I'm like, Andrew McCarthy's a dick. Yeah. John Cryer's annoying. Yeah.

Well, he's in love with you, but in a weird way that probably would never work in a relationship. Yeah. It's like psycho stalker, obsessive. Yeah, none of it's a good thing. There's no good outcome to that.

Annoying. Pretty much everything I am. You can be pretty damn annoying. But you do have a fantastic ass. Unlike John Cryer.

I've never looked at John Cryer's ass before. I really don't want to, actually. How did this descend into John Cryer-assed him? I'm leaving that alone. All right.

So moving on. The next one up here is Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Yeah. Joy Visions are awesome. We're rooted by its heart And.

Our mission's our own. And resentment rides a mile, but emotions won't grow. And we're changing our ways, taking different roads. And love, love is there in the power again. Love, love is there in the power again.

Why is the bedroom so cold? Turned away on your side Is my time in that floor? My respect looks so dry Yet there still is a meal. That we've kept through our lives Love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Again. I cry out in your sleep, all my feelings exposed Yet a taste in my mouth, this desperation takes hold You said something so good, just.

Can't touch you no more But one laugh. Will tear us apart. Again Love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again. I don't know what to say about the song other than it's awesome. And good use of it, Donnie Darko.

Donnie Darko. Which, I mean, another one of those soundtracks that they found the perfect stuff to work in and sometimes even changed it and re-recorded it, but they were still picking stuff from a period. I really need to go back and watch Donnie Darko again. The director's cut or the original theatrical release? Original.

Original. I would say the Director's Cut because it has the NXS song at the beginning, which is not in the theatrical cut. Just listen to the song and watch the movie. I'll watch both. I need to go back and watch the Director's Cut more.

I just don't like all the explanation that he gives. I liked the not knowing. I liked the piecing together. Some of us need the explanation. Yeah, but it makes some of it kind of stupid.

I liked it. It was a much more interesting and clever movie when he didn't spell everything out for me. That's my thoughts on it. Anything else? What was that song from, the last one?

Donnie Darko. Yeah. Joy Division. Most of you probably know it. Most of you probably listened to it.

If you haven't, check them out. Next up is Love My Way by The Second I Looked First. Floor, it's a fashion without gun, no love. In a room without a door, a kiss is more than nothing. Love my way, it's a new road.

I follow where my mind goes and. They dearly make us pay. Laughing in their faces and making it all weighty. Emptiness behind their eyes and dust in all their hearts. It's a new road I follow Where my mind goes Love my way It's a new road I follow I follow where my mind goes to.

Follow all your fears, my love, and put on your. New Yeah, that's an awesome song. From a really awesome movie. You are quite partial to the Valley Girl. Dude, I love Valley Girl.

I don't know why. Again, chick flick movie. Wow. Even I've never seen it. I can't get her to sit and watch Valley Girl.

And this is like Nick Cage, V-shaped chest hair. Valley Girl. You are not selling me on this at all. It became more of that formula. At that point, nobody knew what the hell a chick flick was.

No. To me, I look back at it and I'm like, what an 80s movie. It's so steeped in the 80s. I can't separate it and make it any other kind of genre. But I haven't watched it in a long, long time.

So if I go back, maybe I'll see how much it's sort of a chick flick romantic comedy thing. Yeah. To me, it's just such an 80s movie. Yeah. That entire soundtrack is just awesome.

I mean, there's so many songs on that, and that's, I guess, that whole kind of early, early punk slash new wave era. Well, and it's also different when it's one of those movies that it's not doing, it's not creating retro 80s soundtrack no so many movies do now this was 1983 yeah they put the soundtrack together and they were just current artists yeah it's a different mode when you're doing it because so many do it like retroactively and they just do the hits of the 80s kind of thing when they go back and piece together an 80s soundtrack now. Or they just throw a bunch of cure in there. If you're lucky but yeah i i don't know that to me it's a very different setting when it's something that had an awesome soundtrack at the time versus something that's a A modern movie that they make a period piece and then pick stuff from that era.

Yeah. Which song did I pick again? Within the context of doing this, we've already forgotten the song. I told you, I'm getting old. Love My Way.

Love My Way, yes. Awesome song. All right, so next up to round out your five is Kiss Me Deadly by Generation X. The greyhounds rocking out tonight to maximum rockabilly when two punks choose to risk the subway for. A tube to pick a dilly.

Whose efforts stir fast gangs for glory another Dumb casualty, having fun It's. Hour six, hit a flick, night flicks Oh, kiss me. Deadly Tonight See you next time. It's all six. It's Godless Teenage Sex.

Kiss me. She pulls her lover down In ecstasy but they. Can't make a sound It's a mother. My heart comes out. Having fun.

It's all a six, it's. Got this teenage sex Her little kiss me Deadly. Their super horn is empty. Cause they're all out playing pro. Hustling down the floor.

Have fun, it's hour six. Have fun, we'll hit the break night flicks. We'll fight this war, discover this teenage sex. We'll hit the break night kicks. Oh, it's night six.

Generation X. Billy Idol. Young Billy Idol. I think I prefer him when he was Generation X. Yeah.

He gets cheesier as he gets older. Yeah, he does. He does. So that was SLC Punk is where that one comes from, which is a good example of that. There's something from 1998 putting together an old school punk soundtrack.

Yeah. And again, something I can completely identify with. Getting older. Kind of going through high school, I guess. I wasn't a miserable sack all through high school.

Towards the end, I actually pulled myself out. One of my friends got me into punk and it kind of all went downhill from there. So the Generation X is just, I guess, kind of an early, I guess just when I was kind of getting into it, I had some friends, I actually made some friends that put together some mixtapes of stuff that were just kind of like here you need to listen to this um you know kind of thing and that kind of pulled me out of uh out of the teenage depression going into teenage angst wanting just to smash everybody in the face kind of thing. Just that term Mixtape. It's funny that...

Yeah. That just stuck with me. It's funny how much that's made its own weird little comeback. I know, and I. And it's so trendy now.

Sometimes I even cringe saying it, but you know what? Mixed fucking tape. Fuck you, you fucking fucks. I'm tired of people... No, see, I'm going to get on a ramp again, and my blood pressure's going to go up, and I just need to calm down.

Yeah, I mean, it's... I just, like, take it for what it is. Yeah. Like, it was a different thing at the time versus what dorky kids are doing now. Yeah.

And I can't call them out because they're doing it for the right reasons... Some of them. Some of them are just trying to be trendy and trying to look cool. But I'm like, some of them are fucking hipsters. But the ones that, like, there are ones, because I've seen them, and I'm like, the same ones that are toting around, they're crates of vinyl.

Like, there are ones that they got into it probably because it was trendy, but they do have that love of the music, and they do go into it for the right reasons. Or find them along the way, maybe. Well, no, it's like, okay, you're driving in your car, or at the time, you've got your Walkman. cassette Walkman and instead of hauling around your backpack full of you know 25 different cassette tapes most of them I mean come on really when you listen to a CD or something there's probably not going to be every song on the CD that you really love there's very few albums that I love every single damn song on so what did you do you went through and you basically you shuffled this was pre MP3 shuffling yeah so you picked the songs that you wanted to hear and Unlike my MP3 player now that seems to like to play the songs that I don't want to hear.

Mine just plays the same band or the same album over and over. Every day. You don't understand random. Do you? How is this random?

It's an algorithm, isn't it? How is it possible that you keep coming up on the same band? And I fast forward through a lot of them. Maybe this will screw it up. But no, it comes back.

It's like, hey, no. Here you go. You're going to listen to this. You like this band, damn it? Yeah.

I don't like their ratings. Or how they figure out that I like stuff. Because I don't. So, cut it out. Well, you like those five songs.

I like those five songs. Those are your killer five. Those are my killer five. You know, yeah, that's probably a mushy, you know, I guess, Jay's a big weenie kind of thing, you know. But, hey, we were all big weenies at one point.

Looks like there's been a slight disagreement between friends. Well, here's a surefire way to patch things up. Just take two big, juicy, all-meat wieners. Wrap them in oven-fresh buns. Add ketchup, mustard, relish, and let's see.

Here's one happy fella, and here's another. Yes, sir, everybody agrees that the hot dogs you find at our refreshment center are the best. Buy one for everybody. You'll agree they're delicious. Tweet Audio, your source for high-performance, noise-reducing earbuds.

Tweaked Audio. Sounds better. A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch. That's part of your problem, you know.

You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show. Well, to continue on down the weenie road, I thought while we were in the 80s mode, I was trying to think of something else to play, to throw in here. One that came up almost immediately, and I thought that's actually a good tie-in as we're sitting here in the car, because We also all suffered through this movie.

I was going to go with Teen Angel Eyes by Tommy Two-Tone. Tommy Two-Tone. And you will know it because it was in the film that I had you watch, The Last American Virgin. That movie scarred me. I didn't like it.

That was my point. like i watched it as a kid and was scarred by it no but it was such an 80s movie and that's what i thought i was like this and it was such it was one of those that was super 80s soundtrack again at the time like it was they made it right there in the 80s and they weren't pulling like yeah to the 80s they were pulling the cars they were pulling the police they were pulling stuff. That was on the radio that's that's the soundtrack's good I don't need to go revisit the movie. Because it scarred us all for life. That movie had a lot of people that I fucking wanted to punch in the face. Except Ryan Franklin.

We did. We did. That movie gave me heartburn. Or irritable bowel syndrome or something. I don't know.

It just didn't agree with me. It's a very uneven... I think it's amazing, but at the same time, it's very uneven because it's a goofy sex comedy one minute. It's horribly depressing in the real world the next. Well, I mean, yeah, it's everything that my life wasn't so...

Maybe that's why I'm just kind of like, eh. It would be like me watching a baseball documentary or something. Me watching a documentary. In general. Exactly.

Nice. Well, if nothing else, we talked to Diane Franklin. She was adorable. She was adorable. And we'll let her do her little intro and get into Teen Angel Eyes.

This is Diane Franklin with Movie Meltdown. Music I never knew it could be like this Your eyes, your kiss I've never known such tenderness Not till I met. You If I could only make you. Believe That what he gives you isn't what you need. But you see him, you don't see me.

No matter what I try, my teenage old eyes keep on denying. I'll stand right by your side, my teenage old eyes. There's no telling how our love will grow And. Though it's raining when it starts to show We'll keep it hidden so no one will know It came from your true love. They make us pay but they can't.

Forgive What we've had together ¶ Hear them talking about the pregnant kids ¶ ¶. Let them talk forever ¶. ¶ My teenager life ¶ ¶ Just keep. On denying ¶ ¶ I'll stand. Right by your side ¶ ¶ My teenager. Life ¶.

Me apart How could you give him back your heart? And I just got that older Bye. Bye. So 80s. You can't get more 80s.

Than that sound. I think the picture of you and her is the contact picture for you on my phone. The one where she's all hanging on me. I think so. I don't know.

I lost track of all the 80s chicks that we've seen at conventions, so it might be some other girl. The hell you say. Yep, that would be me and Diane Franklin right there. Yes. So to get into another running segment here, this is one that I just sort of stumbled upon, and I obviously knew this somewhere in the back of my mind, but it's not usually what you think about when you're paying attention to this genre.

But it's sort of that same thing. We were talking about the 80s and going back and the music that was sort of just around at the time. This is going back to an era even before that as we get into the world of porn. It's time for scoring with porn. But that's the thing.

Porn used to be something so different. Yeah, it still amazes me that, number one, like, they used to show it in theaters. Oh, yeah. We all kind of have memories of that. It was right until video came along and killed it.

Like, it was a theater-based movie system just like everything else. Oh, yeah, and then internet came and killed videos. And killed everything, yeah. I mean, it annihilated any other way for porn to exist, and yet set it free to be bigger and more evil and scary. scarring than anything could ever be. Oh, internet porn.

But what was funny as I got into it, like I started running across, like they also did actual soundtracks on occasion. I guess it has to be the big budget ones, but they would record like specific scores to go along with certain movies. Specific bound chicken wows? Yes. And that's what's funny.

Like you would think they would just use the same one, which, oh, by the way, they do. In a lot of movies, they just steal that same music and keep playing it over and over and over again, even within the movie. But there were certain ones, I guess the high-end ones, which is funny, talking about porn, but that actually brought in somebody to compose a theme for these movies. I just thought that was, you know, I was like, if we're getting into movie music, once again, no boundaries. Let's go everywhere.

It's like, I ain't afraid of no porn. So let's go ahead and work in some porn music. So this was one of the ones I came across. This is from a film called, classy as always, Teenage Twins. Because what's hotter than getting it on with your sister?

What? Yeah, it stars Brooke and Taylor Young. So I'm assuming the twins thing isn't just for show. It's not just part of the movie. Wow, okay.

Yeah, 1976. This would be the opening track called Happy Homecoming, composed by Alan Hawkshaw. How do they spell homecoming? Because, really. Just be glad I didn't say happy ending.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. So yeah, I thought, if nothing else, that was a weird... Again, if we're going to throw in scores along the way, I think you've got to work in some from forgotten porn.

I come from a really weird area as far as porn is concerned because I guess... I guess most kids grow up and they either find their dad's porn stash or. Their brother or somehow they're exposed to it. Or you find the de-scramble channel on the satellite where you have to flip back and forth to try to get it to come in. I could never get that to work.

See, I didn't have any of that, and my parents were really religious. So the thing, I guess, that kind of formed the way I am or what I like was my friend's granddad. No, no, you've got to think about it. The guy was an old merchant marine, so as far as me seeing naked women, it was mostly, he had pinup pictures in his garage of half-naked women, but they were all from the 50s and 60s. And that's, I guess that's what I kind of grew up liking.

I didn't get into the whole 70s porn and stuff like that. I don't know, maybe I'm just, I guess I was more into the Cheesecake and Fargo Girls, you know. That's probably a better way to go. As time's gone on, I've come around to that, where I certainly appreciate... There is something to appreciate with that, whereas porn is just guttural.

It's just like... It serves its purpose. I'm not damning it. I certainly make use of it more than most humans need to. But it's something very different.

Gross! There you go. You can't appreciate anything that's going on there. It's all just horrible. Well, it's for a specific... why i mean you're like it is watching it for one reason.

And one reason only and it ain't gonna win an oscar yeah. Certainly it might win a uh whatever those things are called i don't know whatever those things are called. Uh adult video award but yeah. I don't know i think there's something to appreciate in the other stuff the sort of pin-up stuff and the you know the the classy yeah it's very classy. Yeah then we played some like burlesque music or something.

Maybe I can get into that. You know, some of the, you know, you know, kind of thing. But, that's out there. Maybe we'll get back to that. There's certainly some of those movies to come back to somewhere down the line.

Yeah. You know, it's one of those things. I guess I ended up, that was my exposure, was probably better than most people, you know? And it wasn't, it wasn't like the, I don't know, it's hard to describe. I mean, how do you describe it?

You know, it wasn't the, ooh, dirty porn, ah, dirty, dirty boy kind of thing. It was just kind of like, hey, this girl's beautiful, you know, kind of thing. I mean, that's a better version. Maybe I grew up with a different view of, I guess, porn and a different view of women, I guess. I don't know.

It's a better version. It's definitely, again, appreciating her as a person versus look at this act going on. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, what do you think, girlfriend?

You know I'm nuts. I don't know. You're weird for many, many, many reasons. I don't know. I don't really have much to add on the porn.

Feel free to. My grandma bought me a Playgirl magazine when I was 16. It had Shawn Michaels. He was hot. That's not creepy at all.

It had Shawn Michaels. He was hot. I loved me some wrestling at the time. My grandma's awesome, shut up. No, she is pretty awesome, but it's still creepy.

Her grandma was awesome. My grandma is awesome. I've seen... Oh, yeah, her grandma's still awesome. I've seen some photos of your grandma back in the 60s, and your grandma was hot.

She was. She was awesome. She is that cool. She is. She is super cool.

She is awesome. I don't know how else to describe it, but she is. Where do you think I get it from? I don't know. I don't know.

It's awesome. Gift generations to my mom and my grandma was awesome. Yeah skipped your aunt missed your aunt by like a solar. System alright so to round this thing out there's another new area I was going to go into a little subsection to revisit every once in a while don't quit your day job all. My life people kept saying grow up fish give up on your dreams fish get a haircut fish you'll never rock anymore You know what?

Look at me now, Day Job! I figure there's a lot of people out there that we'll all know as probably, especially since we're still a movie-themed show about music, so there's a lot of people out there that we would know as an actor, but they think of themselves as a musician, and they want to put out albums, so I think every once in a while we'll have to throw one of those in. But again, I thought with the crew on hand, maybe this week we would have to throw in a little bit of Mila. Oh, no, come on. I'm not knocking her.

I'm going to play the music. Which song? Because Gentleman Who Fell is an awesome song. That's what I figured. That's the track with her.

That's the one that people probably know. It did have a video. Yeah, I figured you would have picked, like, you know. Of course he's going to pick Mila. You like Mila.

Why would he pick anybody else? That's why I picked Mila. You like Mila. Oh, no, no. I thought you were talking about actors that think they're singers.

It's going to fall on both sides. They suck at singing. Yeah, no. You know, that's why I kind of want to throw them out there and you guys can decide for yourself what you think about them. She's a Jill of all trades.

She's awesome. She's also a yo-yo bitch. She's also what? How do you say it, Misty? Yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo Does anyone have the Corey song when it's my turn?

If you would prefer. Oh, wow. One of his songs doesn't suck. Okay. It's not great.

Oh, I don't remember. But Mila's awesome, though. I adore her in every way. That's what I thought. Although she is getting old lady legs now.

But she's still a badass, you know, swinging around, shooting zombies in the head kind of a chick. Is she having the next Expendables movie? Probably. That's what I heard. She's gorgeous.

She's gorgeous. She'll be the villain in part four. I think they just announced the villain for three is supposed to be Mel Gibson, which is hilarious, actually. So they'll bring out Mila for part four. I think she just put a new album out, too, didn't she?

Or is she working on it? I don't know. You tell me. She just released another video. How does she have time to do anything?

I mean, she does a clothing line. She's got a kid. She's married. She's got. Videos and acting careers and movies and interviews.

Maybe there really are a whole bunch of clones of her, like in Resident Evil. There's like eight Milas at any time. There's got to be. I mean, I can barely go to work and like. Not trip over a Mila?

Yeah. Well, no. I mean. These Milas are everywhere, damn it. No, not quite.

You wish. Better than what I got to work with. Imagine a bunch of Milas around your work welding. Welding all day. I don't know.

Just big flash dance scenes breaking out. I guess that would be cool. Like I said, it would be better than what I have to work with. Well, I thought. That's a good way to kick this off and to round out this episode.

This will be The Gentleman Who Fell from her album The Divine Comedy. I don't know. What's anything else to send them off with as we go here? As we head off down the road? We're going to put on Cave City.

And to your right, you will see Gunshound Mountain. And the haunted house, it has Charmin Charles, who I, at one point, intended to marry. How did that go? Didn't work out well. He has a skeleton, and all he likes to do is play piano.

And he had one eye! Well, that's okay. I mean, we don't hold grudges. He's specially enabled? Differently able?

Differently able. He has a huge adult bookstore. Adult bookstore? There we go. Back to the point.

I think that's it. Keep on truckin'. That's kind of what I was just thinking right now. So with that, go ahead, Misty. Keep on truckin'..

And we will head on down the road. Reaching over life to life Feeling sugared skin My poor baby kissed him so Too ashamed to. Lift his chin. it dropped when gone. I don't know how to speak. To you I don't know how to trust you I don't know how to live for you I don't.

Know how. I feel your closeness like a shotgun chill within my soul Touch. Your finger Know your darkness Your passion takes. Its toll Can't see. That this talk is cheap Let.

The suffering go I don't know how to. Speak to you I don't know how to trust you. I don't know how. To live for you I don't know how Oh, you. The gentleman fell before the corpse.

Oh, you. Hey there, mister, talk too much. What's in store for us now? I don't know how. I don't know how.

I don't know how to love you. I don't know how to trust you I don't know how to live for you I don't know how to love you Oh. Oh, oh, oh Oh. Oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh. Oh, oh, oh Keep on truckin'?
