About this episode
Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #18 - Attack of Purple Rain Since this year is the 30th anniversary (traditionally the "pearl anniversary") of Purple Rain, we thought we would do a special episode devoted to the monumental soundtrack. Well, it has become this huge project, and led to this first episode, where we discuss Prince - the man... the myth... the legend. And in the process, build a familiar yet slightly adjusted version of the Purple Rain soundtrack. And as we drive to the mansion, we also mention… musical archaeology, Animaniacs, having a pool, backmasking, minor key moments, cranking out kids, analogies, lighter app, force-fed you LSD through your ears, stockings falling down legs, we’ve made fifty cents, Radiohead, cover bands, in the hotel lobby, knocking it out in a weekend, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, dancing to 90’s R & B, hunting down musicians, lizard eyes, Nick Cannon, 1940’s slapstick porn, being litigious, peculiar, Morris Day & The Time, makes great omelets, chemtrais, the boiling kettle is ready, mansions are like tissues, the slave era, The Beatles, like a doll’s eyes, sultry, dig if you will take a left here, If I was your Girlfriend, keep it in the vault, listening to Darling Nikki with your dad, dog notes, dirty horns, a sad apartment, how many people do you know with mansions?, the plunger, making omelettes, getting embalmed, Warner Brothers, she’ll show you no mercy and The Illuminati. “…he was hailed as this genius, this little short genius man… who could dance. Yeah, and that appealed to me.”

Guess who? It's 10 o'clock. Do you care where your parents are? The following feature has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not the drill. At this time, we are requesting the immediate and orderly evacuation. Of the vicinity. The Coast Guard and the Navy have been alerted and are standing by on the eastern seaboard.
And it continues to burn out of control. It has been regular. Every five to ten minutes, there has been another convoy of units, fire. Companies, paramedics. A citywide emergency has been declared.
Police officers are still on tactical full alert. 2,000 National Guardsmen are standing by. Air defense warning read. It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack. Live transmission has begun, and we're into the final.
Hour of hell. What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack. I am Brian. Joining me today is Jacqueline and Nick, both previous guests on the show, which you, I guess, introduce yourselves. And if you'd like to plug that reason that brought you here last time, you can also do that.
Mm-hmm. The last time we were here was because we played and we rewrote an original score and played it live to a silent movie. Which was The Fall of the House of Usher. And it was awesome. I remember that night.
It was totally great. Everyone loved us. And the name of our band is Bermudan, but that's not really important. The music was important. Yeah, unless you go to our band camp page.
And buy one of the songs, which wouldn't even know what the name is. We have made 50 cents. Yeah, we have made 50 cents. Yes. No, I thought it was make $ 2, because I think my mom bought it.
Yeah. And then Justin bought it. I mean, after taxes. And then all of the fans listening to this show. Yeah.
That's true. Hint, hint. Come on, get on it, people. Yeah, if you haven't been able to tell, I'm Jacqueline. Oh, yeah, I'm Nick.
Yeah. The only other two people here besides Brian. Yes. Hopefully by now they're familiar with me. So we are back to build another Frankenstein-like soundtrack.
And usually we just slap pieces together and make our own general soundtrack. But this time, because this year is the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain as a film and soundtrack, we've already discussed the film at great length and probably very offensively for many people. Several years ago, on the previous big anniversary, frighteningly enough, that we've been doing the show that long, But I figured on this time we would come around and do a focus on the soundtrack. And it seemed kind of ridiculous to play the songs from the soundtrack since we're doing one soundtrack. Couldn't you just sit at home and listen to the soundtrack?
And you probably heard all that already. And you probably already heard that already. So I was like, what's a cool way to go about it? Or at least dig up something interesting along the way. So I was like, okay, it's a big enough soundtrack that I'm guessing I can probably find covers of all these different songs.
Most of which I found multiple covers of, which may end up spilling over into an entire volume two of this idea. But anyway, this has been an ongoing project for this whole year is talking to people about Prince and finding weird songs. So let's just kick it off. What I've usually been asking everybody is what was their introduction to Prince? With or without the Purple Rain, where did you first experience Prince?
I guess my first experience was with my dad. That's weird. It is pretty weird. It's not Darling Nikki, is it? Thank God it.
Wasn't Darling Nikki. But no. Yeah, he was playing Prince in his sad apartment that I loved because it had a pool. Nice. Yeah, he just played Prince and Radiohead and The Beatles for me. all through the late 90s.
And this is what warped your young mind. Yes. Interesting. I probably, the first time I probably heard about Prince, Prince was in the Animaniacs episode. Nice.
I think I remember that one. So the reference was lost on me at the time. They're just holding this guy with, you know, in purple clothes and curly hair. But yeah, I first actually heard his music probably a few years ago. when I was going through this quest of musical archaeology, just trying to find all the, you know, because he was hailed as this genius, this little short genius man. Rightfully so.
Who could dance. Yeah, and that appealed to me. So I hunted him down. Not literally. Oh, my God.
But he does live in Minneapolis. You broke into the compound in Minneapolis? Yeah, in the compound. I hear he makes great omelets. Yeah.
If you can get him the next morning to make you an omelet. Yes. After you break into the compound. Yes. I feel like if you wake up in the morning in the same mansion as Prince, that there'll be, like, a number.
Like, there'll be a piece. He would write a note. I think I would call the cops. I'd be like, what? Where am I?
Come down to my room. It's the 37th on the right. Watch out for that tiger. This is Michael. Prince doesn't have time for wild animals.
He's focusing on all his random chicks. He has to sue everyone. And suing people. And then make music videos and just keep them in his little vault and not show them. Well, that's what I think is amazing, too.
I don't know how well you know about his accumulating of music. For years there, once he set up the whole Paisley Studios there, it was just like, he was constantly, like, then he had grounds to do whatever, I mean, he always did that, even on his old albums, like, he would write, produce, perform everything on the album, but, like, then he had his own studio to do it, so he just started, like, recording songs, and he had, like, at one point, like, there was a bank of, like, 400 songs that had never been heard by anyone else that was just sitting in his vault that he had written, and, like, I think he made use of later, like once he got into the weird slave era where his recording company was kind of screwing him over, according to him, that he didn't want to record anything else with them, that I think he just started pulling stuff out of the vault for several albums of like, okay, I don't really have to do anything.
Check this out. So yeah, he's a peculiar man, but genius nonetheless. Yeah. So you should start writing 400 songs and bank them and hide them at your house somewhere. Yeah.
Those are totally going to be valuable. All right, I think we should kick it off. The best version I could find, probably the most fun way, because I figure we'll still kind of go in the order of the soundtrack. So the Riverboat Gamblers did a version of Let's Go Crazy on the... And this ties into our previous talking about the movie was on the 25th anniversary.
And Spin Magazine did their own, like, basically the same idea. They actually got people to do covers of every song on the album. So I do like a lot of them that were on that. If you can find it out there, it's an awesome album. Go find it.
Again, I don't know how you go about it officially now because if you bought the magazine at that time, it was a free download. So I'm assuming it's still free out there in the internets. But that's between you and Spin Magazine. Everything's on the internet. I don't know anything about that.
But if you can come across it, however, it is really cool. And several of them we're going to work in today. So the first of which, Riverboat Gamblerz. Dearly beloved, we. Are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.
Electric word life. It means forever. That's a mighty long time, but I'm here to tell you there's something else. The afterworld. World of never-ending.
Happiness You can always see the sun, day or. Night So when you call up that shrink. In Beverly Hills You. Know the one doctor, everything will be alright Instead of asking him how much of your time is left Ask him how much of your mind, baby Cause in this life, things are much harder than in the afterworld In this life, you're on your own And if the elevator tiles are written down Go crazy! If you don't like.
The world you're living. In Take. A look around you, at. Least you got friends. Call my old.
Lady for a friendly word. Pick up the phone, drop it on the floor, and then. Oh, oh, it's all I heard. Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down? Oh no, let's go!
Let's get crazy. Let's get nuts. Let's look for a purple banana till they put us on the truck. Let's go! We're all excited.
We don't know why. Maybe it's cause we're all gonna die. When we do What's it all for Better live now. For the great river Comes knocking at your door Tell. Me, are we gonna Let the elevator break us down Oh no, let's.
Go Let's go crazy Let's. Get nuts Let's look for the bubble But let us do this Put us on the truck Let's. Go Come on baby Let's get nuts Are we. Gonna let the enemy break us down? Oh no, let's go!
Let's go crazy Let's go! Let's go! Let's go crazy! Let's go! Let's go!
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Woo!
When I was in sixth grade, all the little kids said if they wanted. To have sex with Betty or Apollonia, and they said, which one? And I said, when I grow up, I'm going to have sex with them both at. The same time. Take me away!
Take me away! Take me away! Yeah! This is when the fog, the fog machines are in full go. The exits to the fog.
Then 12 people come lift him up and carry him off stage. I only assume. I do really think that's a fun wrap up, mostly because it fits so well with that whole style. And again, the mythology of Prince of the everybody in sixth grade still deciding, you know, which of his random chicks that he hung out with was the hottest. So that was a weird mythology, too, is how many girls he was connected to in the music industry for years and still kind of is.
Carmen Electra. Sheila E. We can do the whole list here. I mean, there's a ton of girls he was sort of semi unofficially connected to. So I thought that was a fun little wrap up.
I wonder how many are still in the vault. Maybe that's what he's using the vault for now. He busted those songs out and then you're like, I got room for some more. No, you stay. You stay right there.
My favorite thing about the wrap up of that song is that the narrator is is presented with a false dilemma. He's like, do you want to have sex with her or her? And he's like, nah, I don't have to choose. I'll take both. It's pretty cocky for a sixth grader.
It also has quite a, again, to tie into the movie, quite a Morris Day feel to it. It very much falls closer to that band. which I guess we won't officially cross over into. Since it's not on the soundtrack, we were discussing earlier how everybody else gets to be featured in the movie, but when he puts together the official soundtrack, it's, oh, by the way, here's all my awesome songs. But, I mean, really, nobody wants to put Sex Shooter on there, so it's okay. We're not missing anything with that one.
But the Morris Day stuff's pretty awesome. I did see him earlier this year. He's badass. Congratulations. He's still badass.
He has not gotten back to me. I was going to ask him to come talk about it. So if Morris is out there and he wants to come on the show, feel free. So with that one, I was going to go into the guitar work. Being a guitar type person, what are your thoughts on Prince's guitar work?
Well, he. Was very. Like in my head right now, I'm hearing all the kind of distorted leads. He was very capable. I have to say, as a guitar player.
You know, kind of in the school, the tradition of blues-influenced guitar playing, kind of like Hendrix when he would go on those little runs. But yeah, I mean, I don't think I could praise him for his guitar playing more so than all the other stuff that he did. And continues to do. He's not dead or anything. This isn't like a retrospective.
That's true. Post-mortem. That's true. He is embalmed already. Daddy might be, because he refuses to age.
I know. Boy looks damn good. I saw him interviewed on Travis Smiley a few years ago, and he was just talking about chemtrails. Interesting. Yeah.
God, friends, you're so weird. He is completely. He is walled off. He is like, I don't want my music on YouTube. Oh, yeah.
Hey, Warner Brothers, Illuminati. Like, you know, if I see your lizard eyes. He's an animaniac, though. Yeah. Yeah, he's in his own little world.
But, again, he puts together some impressive stuff. Oh, yeah. So, I guess next we roll into Take Me With You, which there are a few different versions of that out there. But I went with, what is it? A different way than I expected finding different ones.
This one is Marshall Crenshaw. I can't disguise the pounding of my heart It beats so strong. It's in your eyes What can I say? They turn me on. I don't care where we go Don't care what we do I don't care pretty baby Just take me with you Come on and touch the place in me That's.
Calling out your name We. Want each other oh so much Why must we play this. Game I don't care where we go Don't care what we do I don't care pretty baby Just take me with you Come on, take me with you. I don't care if we spend the. Night at the mansion I don't care if we spend the night at the mansion I don't care if we spend the night on the town Cause all I want is to spend the night together All I want.
Is to spend the night. To be around. You is oh so right You're sheer perfection. Drive me crazy, drive me all night Just don't break the connection. I don't care where we go I don't care what we do I don't care pretty baby, just take me with you.
I don't care where we go, don't care what we do. I don't care pretty baby, just take me with you. Take me with you. Honey, take me with you Take me home, home, home Take me home Take me home, home, home Take me home. I want to spend the night.
At somebody's mansion. There are so many mansion references in the Prince Ouvre. We might need to address the mansions. Yeah. Yeah.
How many people do you. Know with mansions? I think he was in, I mean, he's living in that bubble. That was early, though. That's what's funny is that he's already writing in that because, I mean, this was written, I mean, I guess the biggest thing he'd had, the biggest break would be, like, That was post-1999, so he had Little Red Corvette.
He'd gotten a good amount. Before that, none of his albums really had financing, so he really shouldn't have been at the mansion stage yet. But he was dating so many ladies with mansions that he didn't care if they spent the night at the mansion. He could care less. He's like, whatever, it's just a mansion.
Yeah, when you get to that level, mansions are like tissues. It's just like, eh. Yeah. You have your eyes set on the secret space program. You're like, I want to go to Mars.
And they go to Mars. So mansions to them are just nothing. You are really working in the weird Illuminati crazy version. I'm trying to speak for his representative today. We here at Movie Meltdown take no responsibility for... things said or other.
Or definitely didn't. Say opinions that may be NSA don't yeah see I think that's probably the improvement on this cover is no offense she seems like a very nice lady Apollonia is not I don't know her her vocals specifically on that track kind of leave a little something to be desired that That's possibly the weakest point on that album, in my opinion, is Take Me With You. And a lot of it is that weird duet portion where Apollonia throws out some weird notes. I mean, Prince is always perfect. No, she sounds like a shampoo.
Well, I mean, if you want somebody that's gone kind of crazy, she went super religious from what I hear. So he went conspiracy nut and she went ultra religious. Prince, super conspiratorial nut. Very sexual man. admittedly, Jehovah's Witness. Well, that's what I always thought was weird is like 98% of his songs are like sex, sex, sex.
And then there's this little handful over here that are all about God. I'm just like, okay. I mean, they're still really well written, so I don't even hate the weird religiousy ones, but I'm just like, that's such a weird mixture. He's a complicated man. That he is.
As long as you confess. That's true. Yeah. Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have cheated on my husband.
Do you think God will ever forgive me? Oh, yes. I'm Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, writer, star of Strangeland, radio, TV, you know me. And you're listening to Movie Meltdown. Yeah.
I'm burning hell. I'm burning hell. Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it easy to rent for any event, business meeting, or special occasion. From PA systems to karaoke machines to just about anything that makes noise, you can rent it from the Doo-Wop Shop.

This is an interesting song to try to cover, I would think, because it's probably the most passionate in its own weird, disturbing way. And it's played up very much on stage, in the movie, and it comes through on the song itself. So, the beautiful ones, it seems like would be a hard one to do out of context. And then. Again, most of the rest of these bands that are going to be on this soundtrack that we're doing are lesser known.
This was the one I thought I'd throw in probably the most mainstream or one of the two most mainstream people that I've found that have covered anything by Prince. Mariah Carey is about as mainstream as you can get. And she does a version and again does a duet on this one with Drew Hill. I don't know. I thought just to mix things up, I'd throw in probably the biggest known star on this rundown.
What's it gonna be? I don't know. Oh, baby, baby, baby. Yeah, yeah. Is it him or is it me?
Oh, don't make me waste my time. Baby, baby, baby. Can't you stay with me tonight. Baby, baby. Don't let kisses believe you're right.
You will survive to find. The beautiful one, baby, she went. Yeah, take a fucking picture, baby. Me, yeah. And bring to life the visions of time.
Beautiful, beautiful. We always smash the picture. Yeah, always, baby. Every time. If I told you baby Oh, so cool, so cool, so cool.
I got one thing to say I want you. See, I may not know what I'm going. With, baby. I may not know. I may not know.
See, I may not know what I need. What I need. What I need. What I need. What I need.
But one thing. One thing. One thing. But it may be. I know what I want.
And that's to please you. baby, please you, baby And I'll be back again on my Mondays I want you still, I want you Ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh Oh, I know I'm so bad Oh, baby, baby, baby Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah He wants his girl He wanna love me, love me He wanna. Throw me away. I gotta know, I gotta know, baby Gotta know, baby, baby, baby. It's actually a pretty good version. It's just to me, it's even more slowed down and I don't know.
I mean, it's not boring, but it's just not, she doesn't add anything extra to it. It's just sort of doing a cover in the most basic way of doing a cover. They have a decent little chemistry together, but yeah, I don't know. Yeah, doing a cover is supposed to be putting your own spin on it. For some people, not everyone.
I don't like the other covers. I don't like covers that are supposed to be exact replicas. Yeah, that's kind of self-indulgent. It's just like, I wish I wrote this song, so I'm going to play it exactly the. Way it is.
Unless you're one of those cool cover bands, like the Purple Rain. Uh-huh. Have you seen the Purple Ring? I've seen them on the TVs. They are pretty impressive.
They have taken to doing nothing but recreating the Prince experience. It's like they should play the Mercury Ballroom. They really should. Like all the other cover bands. If they'd like to sponsor us, feel free.
We'll run some ads for their cover bands. Mariah Carey does contribute the Boiling Kettle is Ready sound. to the song that it needed? You mean those dog notes she hits? Yeah. I've always sort of described her as that.
And the thing is, I don't think she's bad. I think she really is talented. She has an amazing voice, but she does that like that became her gimmick. I think the first album of hers is actually pretty good. I think she's gotten more watered down and generic as time's gone on.
That first album's pretty solid, but even then it was like, my thing is this note that only dogs can hear. And I'm going to work it in as much as possible because it's the one thing I can do that all these other little pop diva girls can't do. So she kind of banked on that. But she's still got a good voice. And likes to, what's her activity now?
Oh. Have babies, I believe is what you said. She likes cranking out kids. That's why the beautiful ones, baby, baby, baby. She's just naming them as they're coming out.
Another baby, another baby, couple of twins, whatever. That's how Nick Cannon likes it. Who marries Nick Cannon? What the hell is she thinking? Man, I'm not big on, I don't know like pop culture a whole lot.
I didn't even know she was married to Nick Cannon. Yep. Sadly for her. Wow. Yes.
Yes. All right. So I think at this point, based on a comment you made earlier, we might disagree on this one. Cause I was always, I mean, again, again, this album is built on nothing but hits. Like it knocked out tons of like huge hits for him.
But to me, I always thought the, the hidden gem, the one that nobody paid attention to was computer blue and was one of my favorite tracks on the album. And the one that nobody ever cared about. So I don't know. I think it's pretty amazing. It, Has a weird tie-in to the movie that only makes sense if you watch the movie.
But I don't know. To me, it's one of the more impressive ones musically. It kind of lets him shine as the guitarist that he is in certain moments. And it does that weird thing where it veers off and does an entire different song. At the end.
Yeah, and there's a 100% different song at the end. Yeah. And I kind of liked that. It was like when I was a kid listening to this album, which I did way too much probably. I remember that kind of messing with my mind.
I was like, wait, are we still on the same track? And I had to find the tape. No, it hasn't changed. I don't know. It was confusing in a way that I think was expanding my horizons.
Prince expands horizons. He force fed you LSD through your ears. It has some interesting minor key moments and such like that. It just doesn't tickle my fancy as much as some other songs on the album. That little movement change, for lack of a better word.
After he recorded the song, here's what I'm imagining. He records a song, he plays it for people who had no part in the creation of it, so they don't know what was going on. And then when that moment happens, he's looking at them. And then a small grin appears. I think that's the process.
The really scary thing that you guys listening at home just don't experience is that he just did the prince looking at him face. It was pretty accurate. It's kind of frightening, actually. He's got those dead eyes like Prince. Like a doll's eyes.
They roll back in his head when he bites down. Oh, wait. Prince, he might. I don't know. Strange dude.
Where is my love life? What can it be? There must be something wrong with the machine. Where is my life like? Tell me, what happened?
Somebody please tell me what the hell is. Wrong. To find. My righteous one, computer blue. Till I find my righteous one, computer blue.
Thank you. Yeah, that was Of Montreal. Pretty much the only, that's one of the ones that was hard to find other covers of. That one came off that Purple Rain album that's been put out, and that's one of the few that hasn't had a million studio versions done. You can occasionally find some live ones, but that's the one, again, they've forgotten track that nobody covers over and over and over again.
Unlike the next one. When I started talking to people this past year about, you know, let's talk about this album. Let's talk about your favorite song. The, like, knee-jerk reaction. Everybody immediately goes to Darling Nikki.
That's all anybody wants to talk about. That's what they play in Waffle House. Strip clubs. I mean, obviously. It's just funny.
And again, I think it's that kid thing. I think when everybody was at those formative years when this thing hit and like it was all over TV and you watched it on cable it was probably the raciest thing you'd ever seen when you're a little kid. So it's just like, it's grinding on stage is probably the weirdest thing you'd ever seen as a kid watching this, uh, listening to it. They say what in your mind is probably bad words. Yep.
So, I mean, you're not really sure how to process it probably if you're hearing it when you're a kid. And I think a lot of people did hear it really young and we're just like this again, Expanding Horizons. This one took you in a weird direction that you were not prepared for when you were a youngster. A lot of kids asking difficult questions to their parents. Mom, how do you use a magazine?
Is it normal to have to sign a contract before you have sex? Wait, that's not... Oh, never mind. There goes my weekend. So of all the versions, and there were several out there, but this one.
This one is very strange, and it takes a while to get going, but I swear if you hang in there, it's possibly the most perfect Darling Nikki cover ever. This is Steven Bernstein. I believe he's known for his slide trumpet, and he has played, he has weird little spinoff-like groups, one of which is Sex Mob, the other is The Hot Nine, so he's kind of big in his little world, but yeah, it takes him a while to get into it, but Once he gets going, it's a hell of a song. So so so Thank you. Thank you.
We'll be right back. This is the perfect cover because I watched and like, again, all the super celebrity people that try to be racy still trying to tap into this thing from 30 years ago. Because just recently you see Rihanna on stage doing her version of it. And she's dressed like Madonna 20 years ago. And she's doing this very like cut and dry standard.
Look at me. I'm trying to be sexy version of it. And it's so boring. And then I got to this and I was just like, oh, no. those are dirty, dirty horns. Like this is the most, I believe the word you used was porny.
And I'm like, it is such a porn soundtrack that I'm like, that is Darling Nikki. This is the perfect version of how you should play Darling Nikki. Yeah, and everybody like nowadays when they're making a sex song, they always use like analogies. They're using analogies for everything where Prince is like masturbating. To a magazine.
In the hotel lobby, by the way, exhibitionist. She'll show you no mercy. Yeah, that version was very sultry. Yeah, see? When I hear the horns with the little plunger thing on them, ironically enough, it's sexy.
Oh, yeah, I like the plunger. When I hear that, I just see the stockings falling down legs. I mean, is this not, like, the perfect strip song? Like, especially that version of it. The weird, like, old-timey sound is, like, this would be a porn soundtrack for, like, a 1940 slapstick movie.
Yeah. Like, that's what it sounds like. It just sounds like the raciest part of the Vaudeville act. I know, I know. You're a woman who's been getting nothing but dirty brakes.
Well, we can clean and tighten your brakes, but you'll have to stay in the garage all night. I was not doing a ton of instrumentals. What's funny is I found another one that was done by some sort of It was still like a lot of horns and it was done as like a pretty straightforward version of it. And I'm like, it was terrible. And they were trying to go for the same thing, but they did it super straight, the most white version you could do of it.
And I'm just like, oh no. No, no. This is how you do that song. Like, yeah, this is the only way to cover that song. And the beginning of the song, you could even call it foreplay.
Yeah, because it's building up for foreplay. More than the actual act lasts, which is very good. The song lasts about 30 seconds. When he gets into it, it's over. There's the payoff.
Money shot, if you will. This is something I was going to ask you guys, depending on how familiar you are with the album, but again, messing with people back in the day, as you come to the end of the track on the actual Prince album, Do you remember the weird little thing it does at the end? Yeah, that's another one where it sounds like it could be a different song. Well, it goes into the weird noises, and then he's talking, but you can't really understand. But he's very religious.
He's backmasking. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. But again, like, it's one of those, like, of all the people to do that, you wouldn't see Prince. And then he does it in his own Prince way, of course.
Now, this was the point where I'm like, I don't know if I get more geek points. I think I just get them like vicariously because I didn't do this. But this is how long ago it was. Again, this was like years ago, well before the Internet had taken off. And the there was a guy that I knew that.
He had, again, this I don't even think was him. I think he had a friend who had a four track. He took that, ran it backwards and recorded it onto a tape so that people could actually hear what it was that it was. The word of God, yes. Yeah, what was going on there.
So this was, yeah, now that's relatively easy to do with the computer world, but the fact that you had to find some weirdo in a garage with a four-track to do this, I thought was like extra levels of geeky. Get another Prince Stare after you do that. It was like you had to go to Lone Gunman. They have to move their crazy publication out of the way to go over here and start listening to what secret messages are in all your music, which I think we should play for them now. Hello, how are you?
Fine, fine, cause I know that the Lord is coming through. Coming, coming to you. Oh, God, I love Prince. He really is. He's a crazy man.
He really is the antithesis to his feared Illuminati. Yeah. With the backmasking, instead of like, something like this, it's like, hey. Well, I like that because that was also when it was like knee deep in that. Like that's right in the middle of probably like Judas Priest going on trial and Ozzy getting in trouble for killing kids.
And Prince is like, oh, I'm going to put some backward stuff on my record. Hello. Have a nice day. And God loves you and shit like that. But, you know, hey, hopefully this subliminal message will make someone feel good.
Yeah, I kind of like that again, just because it's so screw you guys. I'm going to do what I want. Again, always just sort of maverick that he is. I'm going to do what I want. I'm Prince, damn it.
My name is Prince, and I am funky. My name is Prince, the one and only. I did not come to funk around till I get your daughter. I won't leave this town. Tweaked Audio, your source for high-performance, noise-reducing earbuds.

Welcome to Movie Meltdown in a world of total darkness. All right, so we've finished Side A. Flip the tape over. Now.... Sorry, it was 1984.
So now we get to... I believe this was the biggest single off an album that was already full of huge singles. I think of all of them, When Doves Cry was the biggest hit, had probably the most viewed music video. It was the single for that whole album. And again, I did not think this was the version I was going to go to when I saw it listed there.
I'm like, genuine, really? I didn't get near as excited as somebody did. I got excited. 90s R & B? Come on.
But that's the thing. I thought it was going to go more boringly 90s R & B traditional way. And then he gets into it, and he's just kind of getting into it. He just said 90s R & B is boring. A lot of it, yeah.
Yeah, you're right. A lot of, I mean, again, this is what many people would still consider Mariah Carey. She considers herself R & B. She's kind of wrong, but again, that was, well, that's where she started from. That whole first album would have been categorized as R & B where, I mean, she's nothing but pop through and through, truthfully, but I don't know.
So to me, yeah, there's some scary 90s R & B, but this was an interesting version. I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. I swear to God. I feel the heat. Thank you.
Thank you. Touch if you will, you must have made. I feel how it trembles inside. You've got the butterflies all tied up. Don't make me change.
Even dogs have pride. In a world so cold Maybe I'm just stupid Maybe, maybe Maybe I'm just like my mom Maybe I'm just like my mother. Maybe I'm just like my mother She's never. Satisfied Never satisfied Why? Why?
This is what it sounds. Like When does it rise? . . My partner, you know, you know, you. Know it's too poor Maybe I'm just. Like my mother She's never satisfied Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it. Sounds like Windows. Drive All right. Do you need to continue? your dancing, Jacqueline? No, I'm done, I'm done.
All right. You stopped the music. I can't keep dancing. The track has come to an end, and now we must continue on on our journey. Do you want to hit some more Genuine?
Any more love for Genuine there? I did like how, in the cover, he kind of did it his own way, but he also... his own interpretation of it was very Prince-like. There's those little loop sounds in the background. Yeah. Which also had a weird jungle sound going on.
And he didn't mess with. The vocals too much. He didn't do anything crazy. I was like tying in a little jungle love in the background. He did drop the beat out.
True. Yeah. That is probably my favorite too, off the album. Not to be like everybody else, but I just like when Prince is like, I got issues. Maybe I'm too much like my father.
He definitely does. In a sense. And he found a great way to work them out. Actually, if I remember, that's the one that wasn't even on the soundtrack when he took it to the label and was putting the stuff together for the movie. They were just like, eh, it's a little short.
Can we throw another song in there? And he went home for like a weekend. And all of that is him. Again, I don't think there's any in the revolution there. I think he sat at home, worked all that out musically, laid down the tracks, went back in and handed it to him.
And that version that's on the album is the version he put together himself. That weekend. I'm just like, good lord. The biggest song off the album, he just sat down one weekend and. Knocked it out.
He's like, I can come up with two minutes of one instrument part for a song over the weekend. I know. Again, he is a genius. You have to give him credit. He just knocked out the biggest number on the album in a weekend because they said, hey, can you come up with another song?
He's like, oh, I can come up with another song. He probably didn't. Even stay at home that weekend. He probably went out. And still wrote it.
He was taking the limo back to the mansion, and he was like, oh, think of... Yeah, let me write something down. Hold on a sec. Dig if you will. Take a left here.
Okay, so now we get to what I think is my favorite song on this soundtrack. This version is the most fun of any song you're ever going to get. I like the style. It applies to this song, and. Yeah, I think we better just get to it and we'll discuss it when we come back.
I'm something that you'll never understand. I'll never beat you. I'll never lie. And if you're evil, I'll forgive you right back up. But I wouldn't die for you, yeah.
But I wouldn't die for you, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're just a sinner, I'm told. I'll be your fire when you're cold.
I'll make you happy whenever. You say it. I'll make you good when you're bad. I am not human and. I'm not a dove.
I am your conscience, I am your love. And baby, all that I really need is to know that you're mine. Darling, if you want me to Darling, if you want me to Darling, if you want. Me to You know that I'd die for you Darling. If you want me to You know that I'd die for you.
See, what I like so much about this song is it's genuine in its. Traditionalness. Like, it is set. Up like a standard mariachi song, but then when they get to the lyrics and when they get to his vocal performance, it's very genuine in its interpretation of it. I think he really does a good version, and it does actually feel like it has more heart than you would assume a cheesy cover with mariachi background would be, but it comes through as a pretty strong song, I think, and yet is so much fun when you add in the crazy mariachi background that it's I don't know.
I really, really like that. It's almost too much fun for I would die for you. It's like, let's throw a party. I'm going to die for you. That's one of the heavier songs if you go through the lyrics of it.
It's a pretty deep song and it is all taken directly from his life. Again, the stuff in the movie there of his mom and dad really happened. The line, I would die for you, he heard his father say to his mother, probably after beating the hell out of her. So it's like, that is all really out of Prince's life. So again, it is kind of weird to now filter it through this fun mariachi band.
But again, I think they do such a solid job on that song that it's, yeah, I think it's my favorite one on this. This whole accumulation. Yeah. And again, I always promise an eclectic mixture. And this one is definitely mixing it up.
Return of the Horns, again. That's right. They're not sexy horns. They're just very. They're way more upbeat.
Return of the Horns. Way more upbeat. All right. So now, baby, I'm a star. I am the greatest.
And they're all about me. And that's what his dad would say. His dad would say that to himself in the mirror. That's where he got that line from. Probably so.
This version is Buddy Miles, and he gets what the song is going for. I'm a big, bright, shining star. You know I'm talking about my dreams always coming true. Look me over Tell me, do you like what you see? I'm rich on personality.
Hey, check it all out. Baby, I know what. It's all about. For a night or two, you'll see my point of view. Even if I have to scream and shout.
Baby, I'm a star. And I know it now. Hey, take a listen. Tell me, do you like what you hear? The beat don't.
Turn you on. Just say the word, I'm gone. Honey, I know ain't nothing wrong with your ears. Hey, take it all out. Don't look now, it just might be too late.
If my luck don't change tonight, there's got to be. A better life. Take a picture, sweetie. I ain't got time to waste. I'm a liar.
I don't want to stop till I reach the top. You might. Not know it now. Baby, I'm a star. I'm a star.
I don't want to stop till I reach the top. Baby, I just want to be what you want me to be. I want to be a star. Nothing comes too easy. You see what I'm all about.
Keep screaming, shout. Baby, baby, baby, baby. You might not know it now. Baby, I'm a star, I'm a star. I don't want to stop till I reach the top.
Maybe, maybe somebody's lost us. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
Oh, I want to do that. I'm a star. Oh, baby, I'm a star. Buddy Miles. I don't know.
I think he takes it a very sort of old school blues version, meshed with rock the way most of them become at this point. But, I mean, that is still the very basis of that. Like if somebody gets the message of that song is, hey, look how awesome I am. Yeah. The sound of the song is very like establishing shots of big skyscrapers.
You know, before revealing some Wall Street guy on a corner. Are you shooting your own video? Wait a minute. It's a nice purple dress. It's very purpley.
So, I don't know. We're rounding it out. We're wrapping up the soundtrack here. And it goes out with the most somber of the bunch. It's the lighter tune.
It's like, bust out your phones and hold them up now. You can't use lighters anymore. But get out your lighter app and get ready to rock out. But this version, I thought, I don't know. And I don't even know.
Are you familiar with this girl? Because I'm not even 100% sure how to pronounce it. It's U-R-S. I'm not 100% on that. See, that's what I'm saying.
Is it Ursel? Urseli. We're going to call her Ursel. Cause that's the thing. I really couldn't find much else about her.
There's that album that she's done and she's got good amount of music out there, but I couldn't really find anything on her or like there were no interviews with her. Like I haven't seen her like going on shows, promoting things. Like she just sort of threw some music out into the world and then disappeared. I don't know. But she has like, I guess it's her thing is to do these like sort of jazzy covers of popular songs.
So she took a whole bunch of them from the 90s and like did this like reinterpretation of them. And then somewhere before that, she pulled Purple Rain and did a version. And it's I thought it was a different way to go with it because it seems like you're going to go the very standard. I don't know. Like to me, it's so straightforward the way Purple Rain is.
It's just a big ballady kind of a heartstring song. And like that's the way most people are going to take it. She at least does a different version with it. that I think is kind. Of interesting I never. Meant to cause you any.
Sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I only wanted to one time see you laughing I only wanna see you laughing in the proper rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple. Rain I only wanna. See you bathing in the purple rain. I never wanted to be your weekend lover. I only wanted to be some kind of friend Baby.
I could never steal you. From another It's such a shame our friendship had to end Purple rain. Purple rain. I only wanna see you underneath the. Purple rain Honey, I know, I know.
The times are changing. It's time we all return for something new That means you too You say you wanna lay down But you can't seem to make up your mind I think you better close up And get into the. Purple rain Purple rain Purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Oh, purple rain, purple rain I wanna see you, wanna see you In the purple rain For the way I am So that I wanna see you. Again, she's got sort of the somber down, but she adds in the very skilled piano and very jazzy sound to it. Very tender and vulnerable voice.
I can't tell if she's playing piano or if she's sitting on top of the piano. She could be either. I think she can do both. She's that good. I like that.
That was a good version, I thought. And still kind of keeps the tone of what the song is doing. Yeah, she's a sad tick. definitely puts her own spin on it though I was like that's pretty cool. And that's gospel-y like a big chorus of people. Yeah putting your own spin on it is what a good cover is what makes.
A good cover I think so way to take my own words spin them back at me I did I did. I'm sorry I should have sourced that little. Quote or I'll sue you like Prince would. All right, so we've been on this 30-year journey to get through this soundtrack. So what do you take from it?
What is your experience with this soundtrack and Prince that has made your life so much richer? That mariachi band. Damn straight. Just filled my life with happiness. I think there needs, I mean, you had kind of a hard time finding all of these covers, so there should probably be more.
But Underground. Underground. Again, I don't know. That's why I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to find a ton. That's why I thought maybe we would just kind of pick the best we could.
And I was afraid it was all going to end up off that same, you know, spin album. But then the more I got into it, there are other ones. But I figured because he's so... Yeah. Incubus did a fine job.
Maybe we'll spin off onto volume two and do some more of these. Because I found enough that I think we could put together an entire other soundtrack of Of alternate versions done. So, yeah. To be continued. Maybe so.
Maybe we'll. Throw a little ink here. Movie meltdown. But, yeah, it was interesting. I thought because he's so litigious that, like, maybe that would keep people from covering him because they thought he would be really weird about it, which he probably is, or they'd assumed it would cost way too much money to cover it, which it probably does, so I don't know how all that really works, but there's still more covers out there than I thought there would be.
Some of them are hard to come by, though. There are a few that have made their way underground, it seems, but... We're going to do a cover. We are, yeah. I just decided that.
Okay. I was trying to sound like a new. When do I show up to do the vocals? Because I've been working on a killer When Doves Cry. I actually was thinking about when we get home, I was going to look up Purple Rain.
I was just going to play it for myself. What? Okay, but I know Purple Rain isn't your favorite album. It's not my favorite Prince album. Right, that's what I meant.
Okay. But what one would you want to cover? From Purple Rain? From Purple Rain and just from Prince in general. Okay, from Purple Rain, specifically, probably Purple Rain, the title track.
When Doves Cry is good, too, and it's a minimal setup. That song was originally. Yeah. But other Prince songs, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, or If I Was Your Girlfriend. Both of those.
So you're a sign of the times, man. I am a sign of the times, man. See, of the ones I think is awesome on that album, The Cross is. Religious. Super religious, but I'm like, the way that that is structured and the way that he sets it all up, it's so well done that I'm just like, religious or not, it's an awesome song.
And you got the look. Anytime we can work in some Sheely on this thing, that's all good. Another connection of his. Another. Of his mini.
Of his mini song. chicks in his entourage. How many girls have you even slept with like two and a half two and a half. What is a half your hand all right do you feel you've you've said all you need to say about purple. Rain yeah i do purple rain we gotta get back to the mansion that's right back. To the mansion we'll let you guys listen to some purple rain and we'll head on back to the mansion start writing some songs and Two minutes or so.
Yeah. Making billions of dollars. And not sharing them with anyone. Without a rule of might, you get a life, we'll provide the sound. I only wanted to.
One time see you laughing I only wanted to see you laughing. What does she even look like now? I'm going to look him up. I'm sorry, I'm looking him up right now. He probably has better clothes than when you saw him as a teenager.
Yeah, I mean. Yeah. I don't see a picture of him as a teenager. Who, Nick Cannon? Yeah.
