Times in Babylon fun times speaking of which let's get to some fun movie talk with Nazis and stuff so I did when we were throwing out fun Nazi titles because I went through the um the recent things i've come across in the real world which is going back a ways now and there really wasn't anything good that tied in so the only one i brought up recently i guess was gonna be my sort of threat have you seen the keep no see it's one of those i and that's why i'm using it as a threat because i don't really feel like we need to watch it like i heard about it for years and then i finally like in the last two years or so watched it and i was like oh hey it's fine like It's cool, but again, I don't think it has the budget to do what it probably should do.
But it's early Michael Mann, which is cool. Doesn't really feel like a Michael Mann movie, but... So yeah, The Keep is a 1983 film, and Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish historian for help in battling the ancient demon they have inadvertently freed from its prison. Sounds pretty cool. I do not hate that idea.
No, that's the thing. It's a cool concept. And basically what's going on is cool. But again, I think. The original director's cut was 210 minutes long.
I think I went in. Again, having heard about it, it was always one of those people be like, oh man, it's like super underrated. People forget about this movie. And then I finally watched it and was like, I think it got built up a little too much. Because then I was like, I just kind of wanted more from that scenario.
Like that sounds like the kind of thing. You would really kind of dig into. I don't know, man. There's a lot of reading you got to do just on the poster. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
That's not a good sign. There's probably some Yiddish they had to translate to. There's probably reading in the movie is what I'm saying. I don't really remember. I just expected more from a giant monster or something.
To show up. And they were all drawn to the keep. The soldiers who brought death. The father and daughter fighting for life. The people who've always feared it.
And the man who knows its secrets. Tonight, they all face the. You're not done yet. Wait. Still going.
That's it. At the bottom, it says, see other side. So you have to take it off the wall, flip it around. So like I was saying, anyway, about Nazis. That's not a very good tagline.
Not really. Not very catchy. Not catchy. So that's at least throwing out a movie option. We'll get back to that threat later.
I also like to use these as a. Good way to have some sort of weird conversation. So this was mine and it doesn't really tie in with this week's episode, but in a general way, it leads me to a question I wanted to ask. And usually we use you as the example for all of an entire group of people, Nora. So I was watching a movie this weekend and I'm watching it and I won't even out the movie.
Doesn't really matter, but. It's really well done for what it's doing. But it's a very guy-centric movie, and there are three female actresses-type people in the whole movie, and man, they are treated like shit. So, I mean, literally, it's a period piece, so some of them are property and referred to that way, and there's a good amount of physical violence thrown in their face, literally, sometimes. So.
My question was going to be, cause in the end I'm like, well, this is really well done. This is good. But even I, as the horrible man person that I supposedly am, I'm still like, still kind of a uneasy feeling that knowing that like, this is all we have to represent womankind. And you guys treat them all like shit. Like, so I don't know.
Do you watch movies that treat women horribly and you're okay with it at any point? Like, again, can you think of them like, this is a masterpiece, I love it. Oh, by the way, every female character is treated horribly. Um, I guess it, well, uh, short answer, no. Again, that's why I was like, it starts to factor in, I guess, if you're not a complete Neanderthal.
I don't know that I've graduated from that yet, but at least enough that it occurs to me now, that I'm like... I watched this a million years ago when it came out and I was like, cool, this is great. And like now I don't know that I've grown any, but I at least had enough of a thought to go, wow, that's not cool though. I was like, so I don't know. It just made me wonder if, if there's, if you have to detach yourself in some way.
And I feel like there kind of is in general, if it becomes like, cause this one was semi-modern, but a period piece. So if it's a period piece, how authentic do you need to be? Because women have been treated like shit. Not that it's much better now, but going back however far you want to go in history, it gets worse. So I'm like, are we supposed to represent this properly?
And then if the movie itself is really old, I'm like, well, now you're just reflecting the world it was shot in. Yeah. I mean, I think there's nuance and it depends on... the director and do these characters have any other life and purpose outside of being beat up and treated horribly or is that just their thing? But yeah, speaking more generally, I have very little patience for that. That's kind of what I've seen in the movies we've watched for the show.
That's why I was like, is there some sort of loophole somewhere that you can escape through and be like, But other than all the, you know, horrible treatment of women, this movie's great. I especially, I get really annoyed with it when Game of Thrones was really big. Because people would be like, well, it's set in the past, so all of this violence is realistic. And I'm like, there's dragons. There's magic.
It's also not really the past. There's wizards. Like, why do we care about historical accuracy? I don't see what you're complaining about. Well, especially not with the dragons part.
Because those work. They were cool, but I didn't have to watch a bunch of people. No, they were real. Oh, yeah. There's at least one church in Europe that has what is purported to be a dragon bone hanging from the ceiling.
Well, this is... So, yeah, what are you going to do there? To distract from your actual intelligent point. That is one of those things that I think is interesting, and I've had other people bring it up before, that it is one of the few things in all culture, there's a version of that. Yeah.
So... at a time thousands of years ago when everyone was separated by oceans and didn't have crossover of cultures they all had their own version of a dragon more or less in whatever civilization it was and I'm like. That is kind of interesting. Just because it shouldn't be like that like now you know internet connects everybody but like you didn't have much of a wifi signal back in the old timey days if you pay enough you know you get a good bounce off of it but yeah anyway Now back to whatever your actual intelligence thought was. Aside from dragons and shit. I don't know.
That's it. I'm tired. I don't know. I'm tired all the time. I certainly understand that one.
That one crosses all barriers. Everybody's just tired at this point. I want to see some women beat up some shitty dudes there. I'll make some calls. That's my kind of movie.
I was going to say, there's some movies. You've got to find the right ones. It takes a little more digging. The other way, there's a lot more. Well, not to.
Skip ahead, but the women in our movie this week really stuck together. Well, that's not what I'm talking about. They'll hear about that later. We'll say many things about that. Kind of like this.
I really liked what was going on. It is weird that it's kind of two movies. Like that first half is its own short film almost. And that is so well done. Like I feel like I love the first half and like I'm fine with the second half.
It's well made and it's intriguing. My own, my thing about it was just, I just have so many questions that I feel like it would take a whole series of, of other movies to answer. Speaking of biting things. I thought you were about to bite his arm. Nope.
Brace yourself. Here it comes. Chomp. I mean, eating people's fine, but I don't like singling out specific groups. In a way, I kind of wish that's how the movie ended.
Yes. I would feel a lot better if that's how the movie had gone. It was very, yeah, unfortunately realistic. It was too realistic. I don't know how to read.
It's more of an autobiography than it is an adaptation of the novel. Because I read the novel and I was like, how the hell do you turn this into a movie? Exactly. Apparently you don't. You watch that movie and you're like, how the hell is this a book?
It neither seems to make sense, really. And it's okay. It's fun. It's fun. There's no heavy lifting involved in that movie at all.
There are certain ones that are so good at... doing what they're doing. And that's one of the, I was like, it's. Not, it's not highbrow, but what it does, it does so damn well that I'm just like, if you're a horror fan, like, dude, this should be for you. Like there, there are several moments where you're like, how do you come up with That conclusion, you know, I mean, the logic of the movie is not great, but if you're not worried about logic or, you know, plot, it's fun. It's a fun little movie.
This is also something that occurred to me. I'm like, this is probably what people need to watch. Because I think we, especially in the world we live in now, are very isolated and we're in our own little bubble, even within... The internet world where we only interact with people who kind of think like we do. And we don't know how many people out in the world are just like this.
Yeah, it's very like genre bendy, which I'm guessing is how it made so much money. At the beginning, I thought it was just like a drama more or less. And then the more people would sort of allude to other things going on, I'm like, oh, maybe not so much. Yeah, it's like southern gothic.... Creepy but then in the second half it becomes a little action movie-y.
Which I could have done without. I liked where it was going before that but it's still fun. Fun to watch. And you know one way that this movie was effective is it shows you that anyone can rationalize anything. They just have to try hard enough.
So it's a weird crossover of creepiness and overly sexualized grossness than you probably needed so yeah it's it's a lot of weirdness going on there so. She's in the group at first and she's like i she's kind of hesitant she's a little bit freaked out that they're all talking so openly and she's like i don't know if i should be. Here like i don't know if i'm that far along my and then she ends up being. I am kind of interested where they go i mean it is almost to the point of ridiculousness on the reboot, requel, whatever the hell we're doing, legacy sequel. Somebody said if Scream.
Can do it, we can do it. But, I mean, that's my. I mean, it's essentially a response to Scream being huge anyway, so why wouldn't you redo it after they do the exact same thing with Scream? And Final Destination. I will say, immediately, I just...
You get bad vibes from that lady. As soon as she's talking to the kid outside, I was like. I didn't like the way she looked at the janitor. I mean, the creatures are awesome. Yeah, the creatures are awesome.
The creatures are awesome. The weird man-eating typewriter. Well, I was going to say there's the typewriter version. There's like a full-size version. There's one that's a decapitated head that's also a typewriter.
That's a giant bug. I think that's what I'm thinking of. Yeah, I mean, but there's so many variations on this weird theme. And then there's one... And.
That's the scary part. And there's so many chances for them to not keep escalating and keep it. And the character of the.... No, I did watch that movie one time and I also did not have a good time. But it was a different kind of not good time.
Again, to put it in perspective, I'm halfway or so in and I'm thinking ahead of later I can watch a movie that'll be fun. I'm already thinking ahead. I'm like, this is good. It's quote unquote well made, but I'm just like, later I'll. Watch a fun movie.
At the 80 minute mark, roughly, actually probably before I was like, I'm a need a palate cleanser. Yeah. Yeah. I was just already looking forward to when it was over. I was just like, wow.
I will say on a technical standpoint, pretty kick ass. Yes. If your goal, which I think it was, if your goal was to make people very upset and very uncomfortable, you succeeded there. Like the weird understated part of it that creeped me out. Like as much as the other stuff is very in your face, but this weird upset that it just ended there because it's like, okay, cool, I've just.
Been traumatized for an hour and a half and you get that one shot at the end of like maybe. And thinking back to what you were saying earlier about why this movie is important so that people watch these things and realize how relevant to real life it is, even more so now than it was three years ago. But at the same time, do the people who need to be watching this movie seek out movies like this? But i think that's our point yeah supposed to. There is no good answer because that's how life works.
I think it's supposed to remind us that yes this is wrong this is terrible but hey guess what this is what's. Going on so if you want to hear us say amazing things like that or talk about the keep or hopefully you'll come up with a better movie for us to watch because you know the keeps fine and all but There's other stuff out there you could give us. So, you know, join the Meltdown Horror Club and give us a better movie to watch. You know, I used to jump in and say, or give us a worse one. Yeah.
And I don't think I'm going to do that. I kept thinking, like, one of these times, you're going to regret that. Oh, I regret it. And I'm like, we might have hit that point. Yeah.
We might have finally hit the peak of that mountain. And you're like, nope, fuck that. We pushed somebody. Yeah. So.
We didn't know. Join the Meltdown Horror Club and give us a good movie to watch that won't ruin our lives. I don't even care if it's good. I just want it to make me feel good when I. That's true.
Or not even feel good, but just not feel dirty. The weight of humanity upon your shoulders. The horror that is life. Look out, Hollywood, here I come. Look out, Hollywood, here I come Look out, Hollywood, here I come
