To your citizens, we have a movie meltdown. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines. Way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions. So they've got to find those extra cups to fill. They got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. I'm Fred. I'm Greg. And we are back with another episode of The Caffeinated Movie Geek.
Cappuccino on my butt. I still drink coffee. The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee. It's time for The Caffeinated Movie Geek. We are coming to you live via digital recording from Nancy's Bagel Grounds where we get together, drink coffee, and yammer on for hours on end about movies.
Sometimes not even the movies we're supposed to be talking about. Okay, so. Last week, I was promised a harmonized version of the coffee we're drinking. So, gentlemen, I ask you, what blend of coffee are we drinking this week? Thundermark!
That was way better than I expected, actually. It's pretty impressive. Yeah. We do a little barbershop quartet thing on Thursdays. The We Don't Need Barber barbershop quartet.
Oh, wow. It's a duet. A barbershop duet. Actually, it's in the old tradition of the barber surgeons. It used to be barber, they would cut your hair, and they could also take out your liver or something.
Sure, a good one. And that's why they. Have that bloodletting thing. Right, on the pole. So, yeah, not a lot of barbering going on, mostly the surgery.
Right. Fred actually introduced me to leeches last week. That's why you've got those all over you, Ed. I thought you just really like stand by me. You know, they've discovered, I'm not kidding, they've discovered that leeches really do have some sort of like property that nothing else in the world, like a painkilling thing.
There had to be something that made people that stupid. Right. But there was like some sort of painkiller or some sort of palliative helpful thing that they're studying trying to. I mean, most of that stuff came from nature in one form or another. So, you know, I can, yeah, sure, leeches.
Why not? I like them. Just drink more coffee. In the bath. Right.
Yeah. All right. So from leeches, we will go to this week's geek activities. So you guys get to go. So you can pick who goes first.
Go ahead. Okay. Well, I'll go. I've seen a lot of movies. Go ahead.
So many that I kind of forget some of them. I had to try to think of some of the movies I've seen. I wanted to start out because we watched The Orphanage, and that was like a really great experience because I don't really like a lot of ghost or horror movies. I don't really like kids. Yeah, I don't like kids.
But, you know, dead kids are okay. Yeah, sure. That makes it tolerable. But the thing for that movie about me that was so great about the ending. Do we need a spoiler on this?
Well, yeah. Okay. Yeah, we do. Extra spoiler alert. It's like a ghost movie.
Yeah, no, kind of. But again, there could be any number of ghosts. They could pop out. It could be Casper. It could be, you know.
A fine Christina Ricci. Who knows when that's coming. Could be. Yeah. But the opening shot.
Of it, you know, you watch the opening and there's this house and there's the, kids at the orphanage and you don't really see any adults but you see the laundry hanging out on the line and just my first impression of it is man wouldn't that be heaven just to be there and take care of those kids forever wouldn't it yeah wouldn't it and that's exactly where the movie goes and when it gets there i'm like wow that feels right because that comes back To my just original impression of just a very short little scene, a little glimpse of life. Yeah, it was a really interesting and fun movie. For me, and I usually don't like ghost things outside of Hamlet all that much. They're okay. I just feel like I've seen so many of them.
Unless there's something different, especially well done. It depends on what you do with it. What I appreciated about that is. Dead kids. Yeah.
It's one of those things that every scene that you're going to take time with, every thing that you're going to take time to let me notice is wonderful. has a reason why it's in there. It's put in like a watchmaker builds a watch. Every little thing is coming back for some reason and you don't have to, you know, you have to be paying attention, but you, you know, you're not, you don't have to pick it. Oh, there was one tiny thing in the back of the scene. You know, you don't have to do that, but every scene is important and every part of every scene is important.
And it, um, Yeah, no, it's well made, and there's a lot of emotions that go through that movie. Yeah. There's some place they could have gone, and I was afraid the first time I was going to see it. At the end, I thought, no, they're not going there. They're not going to cop out the way I think that they're going to do it, and I'm glad they don't.
Yeah. So I saw that. I saw The Future, or End of July, which is... Fun movie. Lynn didn't like it very much, but she was sleepy, and I noticed she tends to dislike movies that keep her awake when she wants to go to bed.
She really didn't like Five Easy Pieces when she saw that, and I'm like, you were asleep the entire movie. I didn't like that movie. You were asleep! How can you not like a movie? Little warning, I mean, I'm okay with most content.
Violence and sex doesn't bother me in film, but If you're going to see that movie and you haven't, there is a sex scene with Sally Struthers. You might want a heads up going into that. So we saw the Miranda July movie, and it was good. My favorite line in it was when Miranda July says, I wish I was just one notch prettier. Because I feel like I have to make my case to everyone individually.
And it's like, wow. That's pretty good. That is very observant. That's true. She is, uh, she's kind of like that.
She does kind of have to make her case. Um, and, and I liked it. I thought it was a good movie. Um, it's not the most fun I've ever had. In a movie, but it was, it was, they obviously, yeah, they're not all fun.
Yeah. We saw, uh, Lynn wanted to see the help cause she had read the book and, uh, And I went to get it for a couple of times, and it was never around. It's ridiculously popular. Yeah. It made a hell of a lot of money in the theater.
Yeah, so I came back, and I said, well, it was out. I couldn't get it. So I got another movie that's really similar, a lot of the same themes, and maybe you'll like it. It's called Cowboys vs. Aliens.
So we watched that. And that was fun. I'm a fan of Daniel Craig. I really like him as Bond. Once you see him as Bond, you kind of feel like all the other Bonds were kidding about being a badass.
Some of them were. Yeah, well, you know, he was like. He was joking about it. He was like if Johnny Carson was James Bond. Yeah, he almost thought I had.
Ed McMahon sort of going, hey-o! That was a great way to take out that guy, sir. Yeah, exactly. So we watched that, and I liked that pretty well. There are parts of it that are sort of hokey, like when he has amnesia, and the girl at the bar who was that 13 yeah that's 13 from house i think was the girl and.
She's like uh. He doesn't know who he is and she's like i can help you with my vagina I'm like, what kind of therapy? I guess. I don't know. There were silly things in the movie, but it was pretty fun.
Can I get a prescription for that? In a movie called Cowboys and Aliens, you kind of expect stuff like that. Yeah, yeah. It was all right, though. But it's kind of funny, too.
Some movies aren't even movies. When Spielberg's involved, it's not even a movie thing. It's a Spielberg mythology thing. So you can kind of pick out... that character is sort of the Richard Dreyfuss guy. That character is sort.
Of the, you know, you see how Saving Private Ryan, when he's like shooting at the tank, it's a lot like Jaws. Yeah, there's just Spielberg mythology that it's kind of fun to see, like, this is the Spielberg thing. And I don't know, we had some fun with that conversation, picking out, So which Spielberg movie is, and who is, okay, so then who is Harrison Ford? He's Harrison Ford in Spielberg. Technically, this isn't 100% a Spielberg movie.
Yeah, it isn't, but there's some Spielbergian stuff going on. It's the same thing with Super 8. I know. That's massively Spielberg-esque, and he feels like he had a little more hand in that one. I think that was the one that got us started on the Spielberg mythology game.
Yeah. And I, again, I don't know. I saw so many movies, I can't even talk. About all of them. Before we totally leave, so did Olivia Wilde say that to Daniel Craig?
No, she said something like that. It was just, they're in the bar, she's like, no, I know about, I can help you. I guess she has alien experience. But it's kind of a come on, too. So it's kind of, it comes off like, I can help you. with my vagina.
Cause there's kind of, there's kind of a scene like that in the girl with the dragon tattoo where somebody just offers him up that maybe it's just Daniel Craig. Maybe everywhere he goes, there's just panties dropping. I don't know. That's very strange actually. Cause it's very much, Hey, I'm going to give you this now.
So lay down. There are moments like that in movies that I noticed that it's like, that's that same beat. From that movie, that's almost the same line. Like when I watched, well, you know, if you remember Sex, Lies, and Videotape, there's a scene where I think Andy McDowell says, is that how you get off? And he goes, yes.
And it's almost the same beat as in American Beauty when Thora Birch's friend is going, we're going to go to New York and we're going to stay with friends. Oh, yeah, like pot dealer friends. And he's like, Yes. It's the same beat from a similar pivotal point in another movie. But yeah, I guess that's going to be one for him.
Yeah. Daniel Craig just gets that everywhere he goes. Actors carry certain moments around with them, just like Spielberg has his, his mythology. And just like, uh, what do you feel is the vagina in this scene? What's the vagina in this scene?
And, uh, Oh, and Meryl Streep always has this non-maternal thing going on. Kind of. She's like a conflicted mom. Ever since Sophie's Choice, either she can't have kids, or she doesn't want to have kids, or there's some maternal weird, or the dingoes hate her baby or something. Yeah, don't you hate when that happens?
Yeah. So there was that, and I watched up. I can't go into it all that much. I watched up. The Conversation, which had been meaning to see for a long time, and everybody says it's so great, and that makes me not want to watch it.
But then it was the opening thing, like if you get to the point where the play screen on the DVD is up, just the space, the workshop is so interesting that it sucks you in, and you want to watch it and see what happens. And I watched one of those new Friends with Benefits kinds of movies recently. Or interchangeable at this point. I don't know the difference either. The one with Justin Timberlake.
Or was it Ashton Kutcher? It was Ashton Kutcher. Sorry about that. You lost. Wrong choice.
You know that girl, what's her name? I don't know. Oh, okay. I couldn't remember. I was like, is that one me?
She is not convincingly sexual. Well, I mean, she hasn't... There's something weird that she was much better cast for Black Swan. Yeah, I was like, she hasn't pulled off, I guess, is it closer? That's about the only time I can think of her kind of...
And even then, it's very damaged. That was creepy. It's almost like the non-maternal quality of Meryl Streep. She has this... And in this, she's supposed to be openly sexual...
But emotionally unavailable, and she really kind of seems the opposite. She just doesn't seem... I don't know. Something's odd about that. I think it's always been like that, really.
She made that movie. That's what I was so wrong for. You know who's wonderful in that, though, is Greta from Greenberg. Her friend who isn't Kelly from The Office. The one who's like.
Did you just open the car door for me? I love that chick. Oh man, there's something about her. She's fun. In almost exactly the kind of sort of comfortable way that, what's her name, isn't it?
Portman. Natalie Portman. Yes, Natalie Portman. Charming as she is. I think she's too smart.
Ever since she became Queen Amidala, there's almost like a very safe quality. And that was almost it with George Lucas. It's like, she seemed like a very non-sexual young actress. She was very smart. She was very, you know, she, she could have played this, you know, Queen Amidala character.
And I was like, Oh, at the time it was like, yeah, that's good casting. And ever since then, it's like, she does seem to have this very cold, distant, non-sexual. I don't know. It's like a weird vibe that may. Stem from her.
I don't know. She had a kid, so obviously she's doing something, but it is weird. She could have. Been a barrel for that, though. You have seen, you know, you have seen that in her other performances.
Right. Yeah. I don't know. So that, you know, that was one of those movies that's going on. Ashton Kutcher.
Sorry about that. In the office. I don't know. I guess it is what it is. We did see The Help, and Uh, everybody in my family thought I was going to hate it because they think I hate, I don't know.
I think they think. I hate it. Things they like. Yeah. I really love this book.
Damn it. Now you're going to hate it. Because Lynn read, uh, Water for Elephants. And I hated that movie so much, I could not stop myself from being a dick all the way through it. Nice.
But I couldn't. Just everything about it, I kept rejecting this. Oh, what about this? Are you kidding me with that? What the fuck is that supposed to be?
All the way through the movie. But The Help, no, I could watch that. That had some really good things. It had some things that were not good. There were a few beats like When these two characters say, I'm going to take care of her, and she's going to take care of.
I'm just like, oh, shut up. You're not supposed to tell us that. We're supposed to see that. But it had. Some things that I really was on board with.
What's turned me away from it, aside from mass acceptance of. It, I think. It is a little too popular these days. It's that movie... And there's been others that...
And I don't know the plot that much. I know basic things about it. It seems like the movie that's justifying to especially white women that it's okay that things have happened racially in the past. It's okay because we're going to make up this story that we were nice at one point. It fixes everything.
And it's almost an apology. Or reparations of sorts. And. That's what I'm afraid of, and so I'm just kind of keeping it at arm's length. Yeah, it is.
It's kind of one of those, but it does have some nice moments. It does have that weird little editor guy. And it has that girl. Who is that girl? Skeeter?
Stone? What? Oh, Murphy. Not Murphy. Emma Stone.
Emma Stone. Yeah. I really like her. She's got something going. Yeah.
She's a much better actress than I thought she was going to be. She was really fun even in, like, Zombieland. Yeah. But, yeah, I think now that she's getting a little better role. I really like her.
I can watch her. I'm on board with. I watched her on Saturday Night Live, and it's hard to watch Saturday Night Live. It's gotten better lately, but. And she.
She's funny. like she's she gets it genuinely funny yeah i've just seen her on like letterman and like. She really just her the way she sort of conducts herself as a real person is pretty fun so yeah i can see her having that. About her yeah i think that was the thing that carried me through the movie is i'm i'm just down with her i can watch her doing stuff yeah um. Yeah I have a kinship with actresses who have a flaw, and her slight speech impediment is a flaw that allows me to have that kinship. So it's fine with me.
I don't know. It's a little hokey how they put her on as somebody who's not attractive and can't get a date, when she's, like, really attractive. She's ridiculously cute. She's very attractive. Yeah.
Yeah, don't you love that? It's in almost every movie. Well, and that goes back to theater. That's like the Glass Menagerie. They always cast the little shy wallflower GIMP character as she's always the most beautiful person you've ever seen in your life.
Even in the movie version, Karen Allen, that was when she was at her prettiest. I mean, yeah, watching that, I was just like, no, pretty sure you'd have a day. GIMP or not, you're fine. Yeah. I do think maybe Emma Stone is like a woman that other women don't think of her as all that attractive.
I've heard, like, my daughter is like, I don't think she's very good looking in this. It's like, are you crazy? She'd be a terrible lesbian. Yeah, it is a terrible lesbian. You like guys.
Good point. Yeah. Total fail. I failed as a lesbian. I failed as a lesbian.
I didn't. I like chicks. I'm an excellent lesbian. Yeah, I know. I'm the George Carlin lesbian.
I'm a woman trapped in a man's body, and the woman is a lesbian. I still remember the person. Of course I remember the person. At college I went to right out of high school, there was a person there that was having a sex change. so that she could become a lesbian. And it just...
I mean, I get it. I get that you feel like you're a woman. There's almost two things going on there, yeah. But that's a little bit... That's too many huge life changes all at once.
That's like two separate modes there, and you're kind of mixing both of them up. Yeah, just let's knock out one problem first, and then we'll get to the other. And then see how you feel about that. Let's see if you want to move on. To the next stage.
I definitely have no problems with either. But, you know, you're just getting out of high school. Tackling both. You're taking your first psychology class. You're, you know.
Yeah. That's a lot to deal with at once. Yeah. Let's, one step at a time. Life's long.
So, yeah. So these are the movies I've seen mostly. We also saw that beautiful movie with an eye. Bardem. Yes.
Yeah. I just try to pronounce how it's spelled and think this is too difficult. I'm going to stop. Yeah, that's like... What was that review?
It was long, boring, confusing, and that was just the title. The cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover. Yeah, I kind of agree. But... What's-Her-Name is naked in it.
Helen Mirren is naked in it. So you can. You can't argue with that part. Yeah, it's hard to. It's a messed up movie.
Yes, it is. So that's most of what I saw, except for some things I've already sort of mentioned. The killers and I saw the hell. The one thing I wanted to say about the orphanage, though, is it kind of reminded me of a magic trick. because the ending so corresponded to my first impression. It's like that trick, and I think this happened in Beautiful.
His kid does one of those mind games where he says, think of an animal that begins with I and a country that begins with, and I don't remember what the example was, but it's like the one everybody thinks of, so he can guess what you're thinking, and it's like one of those Kreskin, amazing Kreskin games, mentalist tricks. Or like the first time I ever saw David Blaine was when I was driving cross-country and I just got into a hotel, sat down on my back, turned on the TV and here's some guy I'd never heard of and he says, I want you to pick a card while I flip through this deck. And I'm like, okay. And I set my suitcase down and I see a red queen. I don't know if it was diamond or hearts.
And he pulls out a card And he says, now this isn't your card. And I'm like, wow, you're good. You are good. That's not my card. He says, I want you to look at it and think of your card.
And I'm thinking, I think it was a die. Bam. There it is. And I'm like, holy fuck. What just happened here?
And I wanted to go out and knock on other doors and say, what card did you. Pick, man? Because I had picked a red queen and bam, there it was. But that was what that movie reminds me of. It's so unified because my first impression is sort of revisited again at the end, and that's probably more than enough of my geek week.
We'll take a break and be back with the rest of our yammering. It's magic, you know Never believe it's not so It's magic, you know. Never believe it's not so I've. Never been awake I've never seen a daybreak Laying on my pillow in the morning. And I stay in bed.

The fourth annual Oscar meltdown. The Academy Awards will never be the same. Choosing a family movie is tough. It seems like all Hollywood can do is make mindless drivel that rots kids' brains. Who wants to see a movie.
Like what my dad watched when he was a kid? Those films are so boring and the special effects are horrible. The movies he grew up with are. Sometimes a big surprise. I at times feel uncomfortable watching movies I loved when I was younger with my own kids because I forgot how much cursing, sex, and violence they showed back then.

All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show. Go away from my window. Leave at your own chosen. Speed I'm not the one you want, babe I'm not the one you need.
You say you're looking for someone Never weak, but always strong. To protect you and defend you. Someone told me each and every door, but it ain't me, babe. No, no, no, it ain't. Me, babe.
It ain't me you're looking for, babe. If NPR knows who I am, good lord, I'd be honored. I would. Fuck those guys. They get funding.
One thing I remember on Fresh Air on NPR. It was Jeremy Irons talking about how he played guitar. And Terry Gross sort of perked up at it. And I could tell already. I already knew she played guitar.
Yeah. Because she had interviewed, what's his name from the Talking Heads? Bernie? Yeah. Yeah.
And he was talking about how he learned to play. He started out playing ukulele until he left it in the back of his car, and it melted because it was plastic. But he learned from Mel Bay's books, and she started laughing. And it's like nobody would laugh at that unless they had done the... So I knew she played guitar, but then...
So Jeremy Irons was on. He was talking about how he liked to play guitar. It was something he liked to do. And she was like, oh, really? Really?
What are you playing? And he goes, oh, mostly Bob Dylan. And I'm like, God, I wish I could hear that. I wish I could hear Jeremy Irons does Bob Dylan. It isn't you, babe.
No, no, no, it isn't you, babe. I don't know why that popped into my head. Blowing in the wind. Blowing in the wind. I had a Mel Bay book.
When I got my first guitar, it was a hand-me-down, and I never got past page one with it. I can play guitar, but it was from one person showing me one chord. And I was like, oh. And then from then on, I was like, all right. Greg, are you up?
I introduced my children to Big. Oh, nice. It's probably a lot older than it should have been. The eight-year-old got it. The five-year-old picked up his DS.
And went in the other room. Yeah, I guess. It's far too young, but that's okay. I'm so used to the plot now, but I guess really it's a very weird plot when you think about it. It is.
Especially as a five-year-old. And, you know, the eight-year-old, who shocked me quite a bit, her intelligence, because I, you know, just. I was like, oh, he already thinks he's big. When he's starting to transition and he's in that relationship, and it's before Josh even starts to push away his friend completely, she could see that, oh, he's already playing that role and he's. Not going to want to go back easily.
And I was like, you know why are you smarter. Than me um that was bound to happen right eight years old though that's pretty bad yeah and and and you. Know um there were there were a couple of curse words that i didn't remember uh being in it that's. Funny i don't remember yeah it's funny how we block them is it is it the jackass guy this The other guy at the office? No, it's his friend.
Oh, that's right. I forgot about that. When he's calling him out, he calls him everything. That kid's funny. And I'm like, oh.
And, you know, she heard him out. That kid's pretty funny, actually. He's a joy in that movie. And, I mean, Penny Marshall's just smart. Yeah.
She did some good movies. It's a fun movie. It really is, you know, to think that you could have a job where you were just playing. And playing as a kid. And that there are so many, you know, office meetings where somebody, if they honestly just said, I don't get it.
Yeah. And then everybody goes, oh, fuck, you're right. I don't get it. You wish somebody could just say that at some point. I think that on the Hollywood movies, the meetings sometimes, I'm like, somebody somewhere needs to go, um, guys, we have wait, you want to do what?
What's fun about that? You want to invest $ 150 million in what? Yeah, so I wish more people would be honest in these little meetings. And there's really not that many scenes in the movie, and it's very simple, and it's just a great movie. And I knew I loved it.
I've not seen it in 10 years, and we put it on, and I just adore that movie. It's good. It holds up, too. And A movie that I've been wanting to watch quite a while now. I enjoyed Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy and thought, okay, I can understand.
And so I finally sat down and. Watched Meek's Cutoff. Oh, yeah. I saw that, too. And I didn't even mention it.
And I'm going to turn in my movie card because I couldn't. I couldn't watch it. I couldn't hear. I had it up as loud as I could get it. I even is an English movie.
I had to put on the subtitles cause I could not understand a damn thing that was going on. Um, and I understand that you're showing me the reality of the situation. I understand that you're, that it's part of the dredging across. It is the dredging through the mood. I mean, you know.
Um, and that the movie is more about, I think the process than it is the movie, but good God, it was hard. It was really hard. And, um, I can just see the, the, the direction of the movie. Cause I really respect the director, but I could just see the direction of the movie going. No, no, no, no.
I want you to mumble a little more, make sure they can't understand you. Yeah. And I got about halfway through it, and I was like, I'm not interested in these people. Just die. I don't care.
Michelle Williams, I still think she's a great actress. Really? Okay. I never really liked her. I don't know what it is.
Yeah, okay, maybe I'm lowering my standards too much. No, everybody else loves her now, so I think it's just me. I liked her a. Lot in Wendy and Lucy. Exactly.
I really liked her in that. I was the other neighbor on the creek. And she doesn't do anything now either, and what she does is lame. So now I'm just both of them. They're all dead to me.
I'm going with Pacey. I'm going with Pacey. Fuck it. I couldn't watch that. I tried.
I never watched that. I just liked Katie Holmes back then, and it's funny to look at her now and go, what the fuck happened? The opening scene of the first episode, I'm like, this is too icky for me. It's a very unrealistic world, I'll give you that. Well, it was just so clear that we're going to be dealing with these themes.
I'm like, oh, yeah. Well, I get that. upset at teenagers who are so smart and so well-spoken and have... I mean, I can't even put this thought together. I don't know. And the actual.
Teenagers I'm actually around are very smart and very well spoken and they deserve better representation. Well i guess what i'm saying is let's lie down together oh but we're discovering our sexuality this is awkward oh it's okay oh. Wait a minute hold on it is getting all kind of come on come on it was just i couldn't do it yeah i couldn't watch it maybe it got better after they weren't introducing. The whole thing. Again, I didn't watch it the whole first couple of seasons.
The only thing I ever watched was later on. It got interesting. And literally, as much as I liked Katie, what sold the plot line, if anything did, was the Pacey character. I think that Joshua Jackson is actually probably the better actor. I know now he just kind of does fringe.
But in that group, I think I identified with him. I mean, he's not the pretty boy Dawson. He's kind of the dorky friend. he you know he worked at the video store he like you know there was just like there was a lot of dorkiness to him he was the guy who didn't get the girl at least midway through the series so it's like there's a lot of dorkiness that i think i i identified with and probably still do so again it was it was the pacey characters the only thing that really kept me watching what little again i only saw a few seasons of the way too long it went on years after it should have stopped but The middle way through the Pacey stuff got kind of interesting. It's not fair to Kelly Reichert that we're talking about Dawson's Creek.
When I brought up James Gunn. But that's how disappointed I was in the movie, I think. We watched it. I liked it. Lynn called it very early on.
She said, this isn't going to get resolved, is it? Right. She's like, we're going to get out to some point, and then they're just going to leave us hanging there. I just think, yeah. And for some reason, there's a speech or two in it.
It's like, why am I so familiar with that? Did I see a preview or somebody discussing this movie? Is there his discussion about the difference between men and women? It's like somehow I know that speech, almost like I could have done it. This is when Harry met Sally.
I don't know what it was. It was like women are organized on the principle of chaos and men on the principle of destruction. I mean, I can do it now. Where have I heard that? I don't know why I knew it.
It was very strange. I can't retrace my memory why I was familiar with it. I don't know. I was okay with it. I thought it was, it was acutely observed, clearly imagined.
And it was people, you know what I love people setting out on something that's a bad idea and they do it and it goes badly. I was going to say soul crushing, but okay. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
I just like, I just like stories about people doing something that seems like a bad idea, and then it goes wrong. They even say, at one point, why did we even do that? And then they keep doing it. Eventually, the one guy is right. They should go north.
But they're like, no, we're not listening to you. And you can see how they don't want to listen to him anymore. But still, no, at this point, I don't know if I'd shift gears either. Yeah. I don't know.
It's that politeness that brought you into the house in Funny Games. I've seen the... I've read. The Donner Party journals, and I've seen the Donner Party movies, and so this just. Kind of was.
It's the same. Yeah. It's the same scenario of they were just blindly going off, and this felt like... that was Moses leading them in, in the, in the desert. And I think the movie felt like it was 40 years long. It was like an hour and a half, but I don't know.
I, I felt like I was in high school and someone was showing me something that. I couldn't get yet is what I felt like. And so I felt stupid as a movie watcher. You were five years old and you wanted to play your DS. Exactly.
And so, yeah, I was a little tired. but I really wanted to see the movie. I really enjoy, you know, backpacking. And so I understand what it's like to be on and on a trip and you don't know, cause you're 12 days in and you don't know if you're still on the right trail, you know? And you're like, we're fucked. Yep.
But you keep walking because the guy in front of you was walking. And so, and so I kept watching, um, So you were just like they were. You got suckered in. Yeah. I don't know.
She does a really good job of showing you the reality of something that you never could have seen yourself. I think that's what I'm going... But I didn't enjoy it. I'm trying to think if there's anything... Oh, I've been watching a lot of Breaking Bad.
We didn't start it until a couple of weeks ago. I think maybe the last episode that. I was on. I still. I've heard so many good things.
I just don't have time for a whole other series. There's so much stuff TV-wise that's pretty good now that I kind of feel like I want to watch, but it's just so much more of an investment. It's like if there's a one-off movie I hear good things about, I'm like, oh, I can watch that, but this 40 hours of footage I need to watch of this TV series. I just, it's such an undertaking. I have, I put off a couple of different ones and that's one of them.
Yeah. My wife really wanted to watch it and it was one that I wanted to watch. And finally she was done with the series that she was done with. I was doing nothing. Um, I don't have as much time.
As I used to. So 45 minute episode is a lot better than an hour or a movie or an hour and a half movie. And so we, yeah, we've been, and I, I don't know if I'm supposed to, but I hate every character. It's hard for me to find somebody that has a redeeming quality about them. Yeah.
Have you watched at all, Fred? No. No. And there's no rooting for hardly anybody in it. So.
But you still keep watching it. It's all performance from what I hear. I mean, everything is just, everybody's amazing in it. Yeah, they all do very, very well. And there's a lot of fun things that the director's done, especially in the second season, visually.
Themes that are direct tours, I guess. Yeah. When you see something like that, you're at least proud that this is on just regular cable televisions. That's good. That means we're moving in the right direction if that good of quality stuff is on television.
We've gotten to. That point now. It's a very different world than it was even 10 years ago. TV is a massively different thing. Okay, never mind.
I don't have cable, so that's why I'm watching it. I think The Apprentice really opened TV up to the possibilities of artistic... Fred, you're fired. Yeah. It's funny fuck it at this point I'll be sitting here eating hot dogs by myself watching.
The Oscars fuck all you guys I got bologna wrapped around. A hot dog yeah. It's funny about that commitment because sometimes at the end of the day after a lot of my daughter is watching like old office episodes with me they're so much better than the newer ones I forgot how good the earlier ones were I never really liked it something happens something major happens in almost every episode unlike TV of the past where every day looks like they're going to get off the island but something goes wrong and then they don't and then they listen to something on the radio and it's over no something major happens every show and they're really uncomfortably funny not uncomfortable for me because I don't care Right.
But for people who are made uncomfortable by uncomfortable things, rather than being amused by them, they're excruciatingly awkward. Yeah. I think the Steve Carell thing, he beats a dead horse with that same. Yeah. To me, it overshadowed the whole show.
It just became him doing that every episode. Yeah. Yeah. Well, at first I couldn't watch it at all. For a long time I couldn't watch it at all because I loved the British so much.
And the first couple of shows they were doing that, they were doing the actual lines and bits from the British one. And I'm like, this is wrong. And they're changing pop culture references. I don't know. But, yeah, eventually I got into it.
I mean, is it, I don't know, that they're less character than caricature? Because they kind of just are, this is how Jim would react and this is how Dwight would react. I don't know. I'm not going to go into why I can't get into it. Yeah, some of them are very, like, you enjoy how much you can predict the character.
Like, a character will do something and you'll go. Oh, that's so. what they would do right early on ryan the temp is a great character ryan the temp when he's like coked up and uh he's got some office romance going on that he really doesn't care about that's he's uh even later in the show um I think Jim Halpert says to him, I liked you better when you were a temp. Ryan says, yeah, me too. Yeah. There's something about that, someone being indoctrinated into the employee rank that changes them.
Yeah. Well, and there's something, too, about working for a crazy boss that is so, true and so uncomfortable. And so real. You speak from experience. Yeah, yeah, I do.
I know that firsthand, but okay, go ahead. And it's kind of like, you know, I've always been really, really happy with my kids' teachers and school experience. My kids have had a great, great school experience. But then you run into one teacher who just really does not know what they're doing and is kind of a bully. And it's like, my feeling is it's not really like they're a teacher.
It's like, and my kid is learning something. Now it's like they're working for a crazy boss. And I was hoping they could have a few more years before they had to do that because you can do that for the rest of your life. And you, you just don't need it. You don't appreciate it.
And, uh, I don't know. I like the show. I like, I love Meredith, the alcoholic nymphomaniac. I mean, she's not really a nymphomaniac. She's just, you know, she's, Just has her idea.
Yeah, she just has her kind of sad idea of fun. And it's, I like it. And Kelly, I love Kelly. She's as shallow as people get. Anyway, this is a derailment.
As we normally do. It's like in Super 8. Right. Well, which leads me to another question, which is, assuming you're done with your Geek Week. I may as well be.
I don't know. I've often wondered how people feel, because I always feel like we need to put other things in there, but sometimes we go off in our own crazy world and tangents and fill out a whole episode just with Geek Week. So I may put it out there to people and be like, hey, do you care if we do an entire episode of Geek Week? Because at this point we're there. Yeah.
So I say we just leave it at this for this week. And we'll come back next week and pick up with the movie. Okay, kids, get out your decoder pins. I can tell that tonight's message was really important. You almost second-guessed it.
I keep promising myself I'm going to come up with a decoder pin noise. A new fanfare? Just go. Kermie commercial? Son of a bitch.
You're going to bring in your Casio SK-1. I had a Casio SK-1 where you could press the sample. I still have my Casio SK-1. And it works. Last time I tested it.
That's the only feature. I saw somebody. Use one of those in a song at a live performance recently. They had a song written around it. The demo on the Casio SK1.
That's awesome. And then the sampling. Yeah. That was an awesome feature. That's the only reason I bought that one, because that is an awesome feature.
I need to work it into the show. Santa Claus brought me one of those. I believe that's where mine came from. It is time for Moving Out on Secret Circle reveal of the next exciting feature. Next week, we will be back discussing the much mentioned in the past and finally getting around to it, Brick.
Brick. Is this the original Brick? I believe this is the original Brick. So if you can find another one, let us know. But I think this is the only one.
So go watch it now. It is available on Instant Watch if you're with that company that beams things to your computer that we won't name. Your little device or your Wii. Yeah, your phone or whatever the hell. So go watch it now.
Next week we'll be back with Brick. It's a definite. I'd say so. Oh, yeah. I love it.
It's a definite watch. Yeah. So, otherwise, that about does it. We will return next week for a lot more yammering on. Same geek time, same geek feed.
