About this episode
Movie Meltdown - Episode 231 This episode "Movie Meltdown" joins forces with "Tower of Technobabble" to form some sort of super geek society! And when you drop that level of dorkiness smack dab in the middle of "WonderFest"... well, you'll just have to hear for yourself what happens. So, let's talk about spaceships and dewbacks and Ghostbusters and steam punk and then maybe... Cat Fancy, Star Trek vs. The Renaissance, taking your blaster apart, odd shaped space ships, sounds in space, utilitarian spaceships, space liberals, breast-plate armor, a human head in a bag in an alley, where are the launch tubes?, real-life Army men, aerodynamics in space, professional-level of cosplay, Commander Cody, the Bespin outfit, a pet dragon, it would be embarrassing to drop it up, Alley Oop, cosplay, would you like me to go down the rabbit hole?, clouds in space, space bombers, Countess Carrie, a life-size puppet, modeling T and A, no Gorns allowed, You know what this vampire costume needs?, Goggles, Sunshine, space West, why is the cockpit on the side of the ship, Buck Rogers, a leather mug maker, why no circuit breaker?, being bronze with embarrassment, we are quite festive, Gray t-shirts vs. black t-shirts, nerd stand-off, making left turns in space, where's the table where you purchase talent?, a cat convention, warp theory vs. spark plugs, I prefer that in my dewback, quick - throw more coal into the back of her, the alligator on the skis, cool trumps science, Fire-spray class vehicle and eventually we must address - the trap door question?! "I've seen more Millenium Falcons today then I've ever seen in my life."

Hi, this is Tom Kane, the voice of Yoda. And listening to Movie Meltdown, you are good. The following feature has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. It's showtime, folks.
Enjoy the show. Our nuclear reactor, pumping out one million kilowatts of power. What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. I am Ben.
And we are sitting here in the middle of Wonderfest. We are coming to you live via digital recording from our table at Wonderfest. Once again, I'm still piecing this together. I'm going to have many, many episodes, I'm assuming, because we've got a lot of people to talk to. And we've roped Ben back into sitting in with us this week.
Thank you, Brian. In addition, we have a nice tie-in. For those of you who've been listening to all the subliminal messages and or promos I've been playing for that Tower. Of Technobabble thing... If you haven't, you're stupid.
You should really be listening. But if you have, then you will recognize the person we're about to introduce. Mr. Dave, would you like to say hello to people? Well, hello, people.
This is Dave. Conduit. Hello. The Conduit to you. And you know, actually, since there's two people from Technobabble and only one person from Movie Meltdown, I think technically this is a Technobabble episode.
Oh, yeah. Welcome to Tower of Technobabble Season 3, Episode 21. You don't even know what episode you're on. Don't lie. We don't.
It's 20A, I suppose, now. If that's the case, you have to put this out on your feed. I think that's how it comes down. So if you're claiming it and putting it out there, that's fine. That means somebody's got to do the editing besides me.
Oh, no, we're not going to do any editing. That's what I thought. Welcome to Movie Meltdown, edited by Brian. Damn. We will step back into respectable distance.
Put that right into place. Welcome. Welcome to my world. The slacker, I'm not going to edit anything. I feel for you, Dave.
Not it. You have to deal with this all the time. All right. Well, hey, I got to say right up front, I'm a little bit disappointed in the convention. I went to the website, and the first thing you see is a picture of Leigh Merriweather, Catwoman herself.
I thought I was coming to a cat convention today. I was told I was coming to the Meow Mixer 2013, and I get down here and there's nothing but spaceships and Yodas and shit everywhere. I told you that was next month. He's easily confused. Cats.
They should do a convention about cats. That's all I'm saying. Check their calendar. That's all I have to say. You're thinking they don't do a convention for cats.
Have you not seen Cat Fancy Magazine? No. There is an entire magazine devoted to cats. You're telling me there's not a convention out there for them? I did.
I just figured it's hard to get cats to do anything, just to have a whole convention of them. Just open up a bunch of cans of tuna and see what happens. Yeah, just sit them around. Before you know it, they show up. You're crawling with cats, literally.
So tell me, have you painted a picture of where you're sitting? Have you explained what you're looking at right in front of you? I believe last time we mentioned the Lost in Space robot and the fact that there's a dewback, which I figured you would be quite excited about. I was, and... It was built by army men, I believe.
Like real life army men. Not Imperial Troopers? No, I was actually down there talking to the guy. And the scales are made out of the rubber mats that army guys sleep on. But then he got a phone call and I didn't get to ask him anything.
The big question that was on my mind. Darth Vader calling. Roger that, Lord Vader. I'll be right there. Because this thing is actually like a life-size puppet, and it takes a couple of guys to get in, and they can actually move it around and stuff.
I didn't know it moved. That's awesome. Yeah, and they've got a life-size stormtrooper that they can put on the back, but they don't have him sitting on the back right now because our ceiling is too low here. Also, he's looking for droids. Yes.
I had a huge question. I didn't get to ask him. Does the top of the dewback have a trapdoor that you put the feet of the stormtrooper in? I would assume so. Or does he straddle it?
I mean, how else would you get on a dewback? You have to go through the trapdoor. But you did point out that his feet are the CGI reimagined. Yeah, so it's... Bindley-legged dewback.
It isn't the old classic elephant feet. I prefer that in my dewback. I have. I think I even got the redone version, but I don't even know if I took it out of the box because I like the old ones. So I have my old ones.
If I'm putting one on the mantle like a dork, that's the real do-back for me is with the real feet, not those spindly things. You have your company do-backs, but that's your day-to-day personal do-back. My everyday back-and-forth do-back. I don't want to wear out the good ones. I keep the good one in the garage.
Exactly. I always wonder how they got their name, Dewback. Especially on a desert planet, there wouldn't be a lot of Dew. I know. I'm not sure I would want to sit on something that has moisture coming up.
I mean, do you hop up on it and just go, ugh? Well, you probably would anyway, really. I figure you get on and you slide right off. It's a little slippery back there. That's why they had to put that big saddle up there.
There you go. How do they keep the saddle on? Dew glue. Anyway, so. Considering George let his children name most of the stuff in the prequels, I'm afraid something like that happened.
It was like his sister-in-law used to say something was a do-back or I don't know, some funny thing happened. That would explain the booger butt. Yeah, yeah. That would explain Walrus Man. He was one of the characters in the cantina.
Yeah. Oh, my gosh. Well, how's the recording been going on today? Have you been meeting nice people? Yeah, we've actually talked to a lot, probably more than a normal convention we go to.
Again, I think this one brings in a different crowd. To me, it's a much more homey kind of convention, and it's a little more family-oriented, so I think you're not quite... Like, a lot of the horror ones we end up at, Sometimes people are just a little too cool and like, you know, they have to be in their very gothy persona. Yeah, explain that. Okay.
So, you know, I think here people are just a little more, you know, they're their normal geeky selves like we are and like we have a kinship. When people are in their... gothy persona are they in character or is it just even the fans wearing everyday clothes that are just kind of a little bit. I think it depends on how cosplay you are if you really want to get all into it I guess you can have a character but I think even every geek there in a black t-shirt which granted that's me a lot of times. Too People at home, he's wearing a gray t-shirt right now. Today, I'm wearing a gray.
Which is light black. I've tried to branch out. Even half the shirts we've done now are gray. So I'm really, it's like a rainbow around here. Black to gray to light gray to really light gray.
I mean, we really branch out here at Movie Meltdown. Colorblind rainbow. It's beautiful, man. Speaking of the cosplay, I'm actually surprised that I'm not seeing more. cosplay i've seen a lot of stormtroopers. They're a little toned down here again because the people aren't so over the top about it they're just kind of like fans of movies and sci-fi and you know that kind of stuff so i think it's they're not as like hardcore about that element and a lot of the stormtroopers i think are that.
501 whatever that. Group is that i think they've been coming here for years so i think most of that is like officially through them because the yeah. The most i've seen are stormtroopers i saw one I saw one Gorn. A guy actually wore a Gorn costume. He was trying to get in the door over here.
We told him no. We said no entry for Gorns. This is a warm-blooded affair, sir. We don't like your kind around here. Did he pick up a giant paper mache boulder and try to smash the window?
He did, but it bounced right off. Poor Gorn. Poor Gorn. And I've seen a lot of Ghostbusters, too. That's any convention you go to.
And also, I've seen... Yeah. Cat Fancy Magazine convention or the Civil War reenactors, also Ghostbusters. It was the craziest thing. Well, Civil War did create a lot of ghosts.
I've actually seen a lot of policemen walking around, and I don't know, are they actual cops or are they cosplayers? That gun looks real. I don't know. See, at the Horror Winds, I keep trying to convince, like, everybody that is a cop should just get, like, a big cowboy hat and just go as Rick. I'm just here to shoot all these damn zombies roaming around this thing.
Like, if you had the uniform, why would you not be using it? Have you seen Carl? He's not in the house, I can tell you that. Little bastard wandered off again. Where the hell's Carl?
I don't know. Am I supposed to be watching him? What am I, his mother? The best cosplay story I've ever heard is, um, You've heard of the Renaissance Faire. You're familiar with this.
I'm geek enough to know it, but not geek enough to understand it. Have gone yeah me too brother yeah and uh. Paul and i are by the way going to get been to a run fair at some point during our lifetime. Yeah i don't i don't curse those who go it's just i haven't gotten to that point yet i haven't had anybody that wanted me to go enough for me to actually go faces fear hi. But but anyway um Whenever you go down to the Ren Faire, apparently the people running it, they're in costume, and they stay to the part.
They stay in character no matter what. If you are a leather mug maker, if your dress is a leather mug, you are a leather mug maker. It's your life. Yeah, and you do the whole huzzah, avast you. You stay in character no matter what.
What's up, G? What's up, G? It's sort of like. Is that not okay? It's not okay.
What is that strange talking box you're talking to? Exactly. What manner of spirits are talking to you through that box? It's sort of like when you go to Buckingham Palace, as we all do, and you try to get the British guards to break their straight face. You just can't do it.
The best story I ever heard, a bunch of guys cosplayed, or they got a bunch of authentic Star Trek costumes. And they went to the Renaissance Faire and they were pretending that they were actually from Starfleet and they've gone back in time to some Renaissance planet. And so it was like this nerd standoff because the people at the Ren Faire were staying in character. And they were trying to be like, what be these strange sky gods that have come? And the Star Trek guys were staying in character.
What are these creatures? They were doing the tricorder captain. These seem to be natives. These backward-ass people. I think we need to shoot a few of them and see what happens.
It was like trying to see which group of nerds would flinch first. Out-nerd each other. I think what we need to do then is we need to do, again, another joint project. We all need to go there and try to record an episode there so that it would be nothing but. Us going, Hi, how's it going?
What is this you're holding in front of me? It'll just, everyone will just, nothing but like an hour of complete confusion. Of, what is this? What may I say be that that ye be holding? What?
Well, you know, Brian. Dude, where's the pretzels? I want a big salted pretzel. Is that somewhere? You had actually.
Maybe yonder. You had actually floated the idea that Movie Meltdown and Tower of Technobabble take a joint field trip to the Creation Museum. I'm all for that. And I think stuff like that might happen if we're there. I think we need to do that.
And we can both take recorders and both be recording simultaneous episodes. That's how you get stereo. And then you can listen to them at the same time and be like, what the hell's wrong with these guys? I'm sure that will be the reaction most people have. Well, one of our episodes needs to end on a cliffhanger, and then the other one.
That's how you do it. Oh, yeah. We'll be cornered by the crazy religious fanatics, and they'll be about ready to kill us. Tune in next time to find out if our heroes survive. Will Jesus come and save them?
Will Ben be eaten by the pterodactyl that didn't exist? Or will they ride off on a triceratops? Find out next week. I do believe in dinosaurs. I do.
I do believe in dinosaurs. Alleyoop was real. I think this should all happen. I don't even know if we need the Creation Museum, actually. We could just pretty much fake it.
We could just sit around and do that. Yeah. We probably would anyway, really. Go to any, you know, snake handling church and see what happens, you know. Well, can you get the organ music on these mics?
Is it bleeding through? People at home who can't see this, on the other side of the room, there is a, I guess it's a Phantom of the Opera, Boris Karloff. Not the sexy Phantom of the Opera. This is your proper black and white silent movie Phantom of the Opera. Yes, one side of his face wasn't just a little messed up.
Yeah, yeah. It was pretty messed up all over. It was tore up. And they've got this life-size diorama of the figure standing in front of a pipe organ. And we keep hearing pipe organ music kind of shooting at us.
It's making me feel like I should talk like this, Brian. I don't know. I don't hear any difference. Don't you always talk like that? Do you always have organ music around you?
Yeah. Don't you always hear organ music? That's my personal soundtrack, man. So, hey, you were going to be interviewing the Bowser Galactica. Who's this guy that you're.
Going to be talking to? We will be talking to Mr. Eric Chu, who those who have been listening to our show are probably very familiar with Eric. He was on last year, and he had some very. Kind things to say about our movie choice?
Explain that. Explain that. We reviewed the Tim Burton Dark Shadows. And we all had issues with it. Let's put it that way.
True, yes. And he's actually worked with Tim indirectly. He actually used to do animation for the Beetlejuice series. Really? Yeah.
Which I brought up because I thought it was awesome, and he was just like, oh, that show. That was like the scourge of his resume. Brought up his porn past. I was just like, yeah, basically, he was just like, oh, that thing, no. So, yeah, he was not thrilled that I...
And I continued, like, the entire time. He told me how much he didn't like the show and what he... thought was wrong with it and by the end i was like well you're wrong but i know it's your life and like your you know work in the past but no you're wrong. You're mistaken about your life sir yeah i thought so you're too close bo's back you want to say hi hi hey. Bo hello bo has i believe the sexiest voice in podcasting today i must. Say do i now you do oh thank you.
I'm getting lost in your eyes now that i can see you usually i have to stare at my ipod and think What does he look like? But now I see him. It's like creating this... It's too much, man. Pull back.
I need an adult. No, no. It's going to get kind of weird because, I mean, the mics are kind of phallic as it is. And, you know, we're having this really bromosexual sort of like moment here. Just right out in the middle of Wonderfest.
Nobody's going to ask any questions. Especially when you say you're going to Wonderfest. I mean, it sounds kind of. There are so many rooms right above our. Heads, guys.
Yeah. Stuff just happens. Is this something you're even going to be able to use? You're going to have to cut it right out, aren't you? You know how our show works, right?
What, are we supposed to be talking about movies or something? Oh, yeah. What is our topic today? What is our topic today, Brian? Hanging out at Wonderfest.
That's how all of these go. I have a good movie topic I can throw out. What are your favorite Starship designs and movies? Why? All right.
Do you need to get in on this now? favorite starship designs? In the way of favorite starship designs, I really like the Sulaco from Aliens, just because it looks so utilitarian. I mean, there's nothing sleek about it whatsoever. I mean, it looks very much like an oil rig floating in space. I mean, I'm like, that looks plausible.
If you're actually in an era to where you have businesses going back and forth trying to harvest different cores and materials from other planets, I mean, you aren't going to have these really pretty looking spaceships. I mean, They are just going to look very clunky and almost patched together and scrapped together. I mean, that's kind of up there with the Millennium Falcon, too. I know that's sort of probably a cheesy one to pick, but the fact that it's a spaceship that doesn't ever work. It's like my car.
I like that for that reason. Why do you guys think whenever spaceships first started being shown in movies, they were always completely sleek? you know, completely white, shiny, no seams at all? Why is that? Because that's what the UFOs look like when we started seeing them. You believe in all that stuff.
Go ahead. I was going to say also, too, probably back then, just less of an understanding of aerodynamics and that. It probably just more the mentality of thinking it has to be shaped like a flat-out rocket. Because, I mean, that's the type of thing you're going to be able to launch. So it's just assumed that all spaceships, even once they're in space... have to be when, you know, as time's gone on, it's gotten more of the understanding.
It's like, no, you can pretty much have any shape once you're in space because there's not going to be anything to, you know, like, prevent you from moving. You know, there's an old movie serial called, I think it's Commander Cody or something. It's basically one of these rocket men rip-off concept things. And in the show, they go to the moon and they have a rocket, you know, and as they're going to the moon... you never see them leave the blue atmosphere and clouds and all that. And I think that they were assuming that in space, between the Earth and the moon, it would just be the same atmosphere, you know?
You wouldn't know any different, really. You'd get up there. No one had actually been there except maybe dogs, and they weren't really, you know. Or speaking Russian. Wasn't it the Aztec mummy who fought Commando Cody in the series?
Probably. I think so, yeah. Sounds about right. If not, we'll go with it. But it was just really interesting that it showed the rocket still going through clouds and blue.
Well, it was gray sky like Brian's shirt. But, you know, the assumption was it was blue sky and you never saw black space or stars. And I can see where people would think, well, obviously it's daylight and there would still be clouds in space and blueness. I don't know. It's just very clear.
Yeah. Well, let me ask you this, boat do you think that alien you know do they kind of they kind of started the trend maybe of getting away from the super sleek spaceship getting more hands-on and gritty and dirty do you think that it's kind of ruined it now where it's like that's all you ever see people are Whenever people make spaceships now, it always looks like an industrial park in space pretty much. They've kind of gotten away from the prettiness. I mean, what do you think? The dump truck syndrome.
So I'm trying to think. I mean, in the way of most recent spaceships that I thought had unique designs, it sort of got away from that. Sunshine had a really, really cool one. Sorry, what? Sunshine, the Danny Boyle film.
Did you ever see that? No, I've kind of forgotten what that one looks like. Paint the picture in our minds here. Basically, it's just a huge mirror. It kind of looks like a mushroom.
The mirror basically protects them from the sunlight as they get closer and closer to the sun. Really, it's just. Extremely thin, extremely narrow, almost like just a chain of rooms or compartments as you go along that's just directly behind it. And they can, like, refract the sunlight if they need to to help the plants grow that are inside that are providing the oxygen. It's very much like just a science lab that's floating towards the sun.
I mean, that's a really cool design that they have in that. But, yeah, now that you mention it, yeah, everybody has kind of gone in the opposite direction where it's like everything is industrial. I don't know really who could have started that. It might have been the Alien series. Well, was it Star Wars, maybe?
No, Star Wars. I can't remember what came first. Yeah, Star Wars was first. Silent Running kind of had a utilitarian look to it as well, the ship and that. I can't think of the name of it.
I don't know. That's a good question. What is that first spaceship that sort of tipped the scales? That broke the mold of the super sleek kind of. I mean, I guess popular-wise, Millennium Falcon.
But yeah, Nostromo is pretty close. I mean, that one makes it not cool at all. It is a big tanker just rolling along in space. You know, the thing about the Falcon, when I was a kid, I always thought it was mind-blowing. I did not understand why the control center, the cockpit, if you will, was on the side of the ship.
And it didn't make any sense to me, but I knew that I loved it. I didn't know why. It was so different. The instant you said that, here in the future, once this episode's uploaded, every single sci-fi geek who's a hardcore Star Wars fan is going to be like, well, according to the expanded universe, the reason that exists is done. They're going to start twitching.
It's like, you fool. If they'd been here, they would have been like, son of a bitch, give me the microphone. They would have explained it. Because I want to know, how did he turn the Falcon left? You know?
One of those cool cameras. He's got a textbook blind spot on his left side. That's what Chewie was for. It didn't make any sense to me. He looks out the other side.
Well, that's for turning right. How do you turn left? Maybe that's why the thing never worked. He was just constantly colliding with asteroids. That could be a very good reason.
While we're on Starship Geometry, why is the Enterprise Bridge on top of the saucer section right where it's hittable? It's like you put it in the middle of the ship somewhere. And it's at the middle of a big circle, like a target, if you will. Bullseye. Just curious.
Bad design. There might not be an answer, but I'd put it in the guts of the ship where you'd have to go through a lot of ship to get to it. Put it at the tail end. I mean, nobody shoots for the ass end of it. If you didn't have it right there, then when they blow out the sky dome every time they have a fight, you wouldn't have anything to come falling down on them.
How would you know they're in battle unless you had just shit flying everywhere? Which has always amazed me that on Star Trek, it's like, you can have sparks and just pieces flying everywhere. It's like, Haven't they punctured the hull? No. Well, it goes to the whole thing about why don't they have surge protectors on their control panels.
I mean, jeez. I mean, they've got shrapnel coming right out of the control panel. Just have some sort of circuit breaker on it. You know, if Starfleet wasn't a bunch of space liberals, I think they should have kept the bridge. This is where we need Paul Brokaw here again.
It's just like, Captain Obama, Starship Enterprise. Oh, we don't use money in the future. We've evolved past that. How did they ever get out of the 20th century? Eye roll.
If I had been creating starships, I would have kept the bridge at the top, but it would have been a dummy bridge. It would have been like. Pretty sneaky. I would have even painted a giant arrow on the hull of the ship. Bridge, do not hit.
Bridge, do not hit. And then have the actual sneaky actual bridge way down at the back end where no one would think to hit it. And like, this starship's unstoppable. They think they destroyed the bridge. You guys are so lame.
Idiot Klingons, I swear. Speaking of the bridge, I better head back. But I'll keep stopping by. Okay. Back to the command post.
Let's go to the beach each let's go get a wave they say what they gonna say have a drink clink found a bud light bad bitches like me it's hard to come by the patrol oh let's go get it on the zone oh yes i'm in the zone is it two three leave a good tip i'm gonna blow all of my money. And don't get. If you want more, more. Then here I am Starships were meant to fly Hands up and touch the sky Can't stop, cause we're so high Let's do this one more time Starships were. Meant to fly.
And touch the sky let's go one last time we're higher than a mother f * * *. Er Uh, yes, sir. May I help you? Oh, I'd like two of those, please. Hot dogs?
Yes, sir. And three of those. And one of those. And five bars of these, and a cup of a nice hot liquid. Coffee.
Coming right up. Oh, and two bags of those peculiar white coffee material. You mean our crunchy popcorn. Shall I wrap that for. You, sir?
Oh, that's all right. My saucer's just outside. They come from miles to enjoy our intermission. ¶ ¶. All his life, he only cared about one thing, himself. But now, the best hotshot pilot in the galaxy was playing babysitter to an old man, a green kid, two robots, and a princess.
Han Solo really had his hands full. Han Solo is back. Star Wars is back. Star Wars. Rated PG.
Parental guidance suggested. Hey guys, look what I've got. Check out these awesome earbuds I'm using right now. Look at that. That's wood right there.
That's actual wood. Why would you use wood to make technology? Because they're... It's like... They're steampunk.
Is steampunk really wood? I thought it was more of a brass thing. Well, you've got to work the wood in to hold the brass together. These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions with a mic built in, mind you. But yeah, where would I...
Get these you under tweaked audio. Way to pitch. You want to hear more? You say. Tweaked audio.com.
Hey, they are available in three styles and seven colors and they sound pretty damn good. I kind of forgot cause I hadn't had my old pair in a while and I was using the knockoff crappy ones I bought at the store and I, I got these and put them in. I was like, Oh shit, that's right. These are actually really good. So they are professional quality earbuds, mind you.
And, you know, noise reducing, compatible with your iPods and most phones, unless you have a dumb phone. You should really get a smartphone, not a dumb phone. So anyway, the basic rundown here, if you need yourself some earbuds, tweakedaudio.com. And if you go there, there's a deal. There's a Meltdown deal.
If you go, there's a discount code and you put in Meltdown, you get 33% off and free shipping. You guys are excited, right? Yeah. Oh, yeah. As well you should be.
Tweakedaudio.com. Use the Meltdown code. That's all I'm saying. Dave, I do not get superheroes. Oh, my God.
I don't get you. What don't you get? Towerbot here. Well, the meatbags were going to say that if you're a geek and like podcasts, then you could try Tower of Technobabble at www.toweroftechnobabble.com. Then this started.
Well, it's up to you. I'm gonna get my taser and put a stop to this. Tower bot out. Okay, monkeys. It's nap time.
Hey kids, it's Brian. So you're listening to this episode, and it sounds pretty good, right? That's because we're using our new mics from the Doo-Wop Shop. We are using the VLH SM2000s that are made specifically for the Doo-Wop Shop. And if you want one, you can go get one yourself.
They are actually only $ 65 if you want to buy one, or they rent everything in the Doo-Wop shop, so you can go there and get it for as little as $ 5 a month. So you too can be out there using your microphones to record a show, or interview people, or, I don't know, most people probably have, like, bands and, you know, rent instruments and stuff, which they also do. They have a huge selection. Of instruments, so... Anything you need for any type of event, whether it's a music show or a business meeting or whatever kind of occasion you've got, they've pretty much got everything covered.
So if they are located in Louisville, you can go to the Highland Store at 1587 Bartstown Road or in the East End at 2915 South Hirspurn Parkway. Even if you're not in the area, they have the website like most businesses, but you go to doo-wop.com. And specifically, they have a huge selection of karaoke discs. So you can actually go to the website. They have thousands of titles to choose from, and they're.
Only like $ 4. 99 a month. So whatever you need karaoke-wise, they can hook you up through the internet, and you don't even have to be in the area. So again, that is doo-wop.com. Go there.
They'll have whatever you need. They certainly did with us for the mic. So yeah, go to doo-wop.com and check it out. Hi, this is Lance Henderson, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown. Listen if you dare.
It's part of your problem, you know. You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show. You a G, you a G, G, G.
My name is a nigga, you can call me nigga. Moments of love Can't stop and touch the sky Can't stop, this is so hard Let's do it one more time Starships, moments of love Can't. Stop and touch the sky. Well, Dave, what are your favorite starship-y designs? What do you like?
And as a kid, it's weird, but I always loved the Y-Wing fighter in Star Wars. I don't know why that one really connected with me. It's funny that it wasn't the popular one. Because that's the thing. I always remember playing with the toys, and the X-Wing got all of them, because I guess Luke flew it.
But when you go back and watch the movie, the Y-Wings are equally as much involved, and nobody cared that much about it. They always seemed bulkier. They weren't really... navigating the vacuum of space as easily as the x-wing well. You know they were older than it was it was the later it was the earlier technology but i always kind of i don't know i dug them. I always wanted the toy i didn't have the toy i i like the way that the toy had the ability for you to put figures in and and oh no well of course you could do it in the x-wing i mean you could You could put a droid in.
You couldn't do that in the X-Wing toy. You didn't have a trap door. Yeah. Hey, in the future, it's all trap doors, man. It's all trap doors.
Trap door technology took leaps and bounds. It's trap doors and ball bearings in the future. That's all it is. That's how it runs, all this stuff. Industrial parks and space.
Oh, wow. What do you like, Brian? The sad thing is I've asked this question before. So I think I also answered it at that time. But for anyone who doesn't remember a long, long time ago, it's been a good year and a half at least.
I was always, and while we're in the nerdy Star Wars universe, I was always partial to the A-Wing fighter, which you never even see. But since we brought up the clunky other ships versus sleek, to me, it's the most cool sports car ship in the Star Wars universe. Everything else is so clunky and weird. And even the X-Wing is like, That one is just like a sports car. It happens to be a spaceship.
Actually, it looks a lot like the Jedi fighters in the prequels. They ripped themselves off is what you're saying. It's an homage to a better time. A backwards homage. I would really like to talk to someone who's really just gone a little bit too far into the fan reasoning on why things work the way they do.
Why does having the X-Wing wings open up into that X formation, make them more formidable than like your Y wing on the side. You know. Battle ready. Would you like me to go down the rabbit hole? Please do.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, God. Well, the Y-Wing was designed as a bomber more than a tactical fighter, whereas the X-Wing has a better field of fire when the S-Foil is in an attack position. The whole idea of bombers in space, there is no down in space. You don't drop bombs down.
You throw them real hard. But isn't that just like shooting something? It slowly wanders towards your target. Yeah. Well, we were going about half the speed of light, so we should have released it three days ago.
Got it. Oops. This battle's all messed up. Yeah, like, you know how they have compasses in real aircraft? I don't think that works in space.
Yeah, in space they have a compass that shows which way's up and which way's down, so they know which way to drop their bombs. Exactly. It would be embarrassing to drop it up. Yeah. Stupid Klingons.
As far as. Direction goes, there was an episode of Star Trek where they said something about the western section of the galaxy. I don't remember which one it was, but I just remember it. Well, I'll just agree that this way is west. Got it.
Moving on. Manifest destiny. We are taking over the universe. The reason I'm asking about starships and stuff is we were in one of the other rooms and there's just little spaceship models everywhere and I... love little toys i i can't help it it's just uh and there were starfleet designs i had never heard of i mean i think really some of these guys will take the the basically the the round starting piece of your basic star starship enterprise and they'll just start gluing on engine pods and whatever okay yeah this is the uh arcadies class and uh yeah and they just go on and That's. The wonder of making your own models.
You can do whatever the hell you want. Is that where the wonder fest comes from? The wonder. Where does the fest come from? Look how festive this is.
We are quite festive. Ask and answer. Oh, that's great. So, yeah, that's the beauty of making these models is you can do whatever you want. As long as your nacelles keep the warp geometry correct.
There you go. Science. It's all about science. Hard space fictional science. Well, actually.
Hard space science. We were talking about this the other day, actually. Like, Dave and I could not fix a car engine to save our life. We couldn't change out a spark plug. But for some reason, if anyone was to ask us, how does warp theory work?
Where you... Yeah. Geeks. Anyway. Well, you've got to keep your dilithium matrix clean.
Otherwise, it'll fracture and then you're just S.O.L. Wow. Anyway.... We put the babble in Technobabble of Tower of Technobabble. Yes.
That is true. There's also a lot of model weapons over there, too. I saw an original Colonial Blaster from the 1978 Battlestar Galactica. Oh. I didn't see any lightsabers.
Well, sure. I didn't see any lightsabers over there. It's all guns. Mostly guns. People like guns.
This is like space NRA over there. The SNRA. We're not in enlightened age, I hate to tell you. We are clumsy. How did we ever get out of the 21st century?
We are random and clumsy. That's what we are. Yeah, Obi-Wan, we saw the prequels. They were not a better time. I know.
So much doesn't make sense. The more civilized age my ass. Bunch of idiots then, too. Yippee and sand and stuff. Screw you.
Screw you, future. Past. Future past. Future past. Roundabout future and we we uh dave and i went to a convention a while ago and there was a lot of uh steampunk stuff i'm not seeing that here.
Not quite as much no they have better power sources here now they're hardcore on steam. They yeah they have to pay lithium crystals to keep this stuff going they. Don't need that what are your thoughts on the whole steampunk thing that's going on now in pop culture, Brian? I think it was like two or three years ago. But anyway, I'm right on the pulse of things, Ben.
My Tandy can only take in so much before it. Just craps up. My favorite comment, and I won't take credit for it, but I was just like, look, it's like. The goth kids found brown. And I was like, wow, you are exactly right.
I was like, it's the same group of people, more or less. But they're like, what if I glue some brass shit on my head over here and get a lot of leather? It's just a variation, because it's sort of the same group of people. You know what this vampire costume needs? Goggles.
Goggles and... A gun that shoots steaks at them. That's what I need. A steam-powered gun that shoots steaks at them. So what you're telling me now is steampunk is passe, and I'm a complete idiot for even bringing it up.
Is that it? I wouldn't say complete idiot. Stan, you were stuck at 89% forever. Oh, my God. This must be how trendy teenage girls feel when they're wearing something that, oh, my God, that is so two months ago, and you feel like a complete idiot.
You are so three years ago. I am not just... I don't have... I'm not red with embarrassment. I'm bronze with embarrassment over here.
Okay. Well, at least you're getting it. Yes. At least you're grasping the essentials. Ben finally feels like a teenage girl.
I'm finally. We've been waiting for this day. I'm blossoming. I believe Paul always feels like a teenage girl. That's a Tower of Technobabble joke.
You guys should be listening to both. You understand now, right? You won't get it unless you listen to every episode. Every episode. So what is the big thing going on in pop culture today? now that I won't latch onto until two years from now.
Get ahead of the curve for once in your life. That's the thing. Help me. As you were saying that, I was trying to think what stepped in and replaced that. I don't know if there is any specific look now.
It's just gotten more... I think it's more professional. I've noticed in those three years how many people... It is almost their job cosplay. There are people that that is their thing.
And we. have one that's a friend of the show and like constantly she's uploading new pictures. And I'm just like, how do you finance all this stuff? Like, I just, I don't like, I can barely afford to make this gray shirt that I'm wearing right now. So it's like how this, like every other week there's an entire new outfit with new special made accessories. And like so much of it seems like it takes a good amount of money to put together.
And that's, I'm like, are they getting like sponsors? Is it going to be like NASCAR cosplay? They're going to have like a big, patch on the side of their bell dress or something? I don't know. It's like, I don't know what it's going to do.
And wouldn't that break it? I would think. Wouldn't that ruin the authenticity of your costume is that you have to have a lube company on the side of it? Have you ever cosplayed as the kids say? Not in the normal sense.
I did organize a movie-themed art show, and then I encouraged everyone to come dressed as their favorite movie character. That's probably the only time I've ever dressed up. I was at that, and I recall a certain jacket that you were wearing. Yeah, it was in a full outfit. Thank you very much.
Well, I don't like to look below the waist, though. Well, you should have because those pants were awesome. So it was brown pants with the yellow stripes. Yeah, he was Empire Strikes Back. Yeah, I wasn't just Han Solo.
I was specifically the Empire. Because that's the better outfit. I have a problem with the name of that on the action figure cards. They always call it Bespin outfit, but he was wearing that before he got to Bespin. That's where he stopped wearing.
It, though. Yeah, then they put him in the cool sleepy time gear that he gets. He gets his night shirt. Yeah, they took his jacket away. You can't freeze somebody in a jacket.
That's crazy. That would completely deflect the... Carbonite that was coming at him. It was a really good jacket. It wasn't just a windbreaker.
It was a carbonite breaker. It had fensilate, which also insulates you from carbon. It was that frog gear. It was breathable, but it would keep him safe. He knew what he was doing when he put that jacket on.
It's space. You've got to protect yourself, man. Feels a little carbonite-y out there today. A little nippy. I've got to put this on.
So that was my costume, and that was about it, really. After that, I was like, yeah, this is kind of cool, but I've got stuff to do at all these events, so I don't. Have time to wear my blaster and be knocking stuff over. Did you make it yourself, or did you buy it? No, God, no.
Again, that's the other thing. I'm like, I don't have the commitment or the finances or the know-how to put together all those elaborate costumes they do. I was like, do they make a Bespin Hanse? Yeah, that one. I want that one.
You bought it off of... Off the rack? That's amazing. Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of dorks out there that want to dress up like Han Solo.
I am just one of many. Dorks of all shapes and sizes. That's true. Wow. Yeah, was it pricey, would you say?
Yes. Not as pricey as many other things I've seen out there. But, you know, for me, who is poor, it was pretty pricey, actually. Some have more apparatus than others. I suppose.
Yeah, yeah. I can eat or I can get a Bespin jacket. Jeez. I was hungry, but damn, that jacket looked good. And it's fitting better all the time.
Luckily, I bought one size down, because I'm not going to eat ever again. Spent all my money on this vintage blaster. Pew, pew. Actually, it makes a weird... It's broken.
Like, it looks awesome, but it makes like a whirring noise. Like, whatever is supposed to make the right noise, it just kind of goes. Oh, is that the toy from 1970? Yeah. Okay, I've got it too in...
I actually took it apart once to check it out. And there's this little white spinning wheel with these notches in it. And when you press the button, it starts spinning. And when you pull the trigger, the trigger actually makes this little piece of plastic come down and hit into the cogs. And it makes this sound.
It's not electronic. Which is laser. It's practical effects. It's almost like steampunk. It's the real world.
That's probably because you didn't have enough steam in your. It's. Mechanical and cogs and whatnot. It's true. Nice.
I just love how I'm years late to the whole steampunk party. That's great. Like, were there ever steampunk Borg, like, cosplay steampunk, you know, walking around? Isn't that sort of, like, cancels itself out? I mean, they're redundant.
They're more hydraulic than steam, but, you know, same deal. Just picture this big smoke stack on the top of the board. There's got to be, because I've seen, and I know I've seen a picture of a steampunk Boba Fett. So there has to be a steampunk Borg. Here comes the Borg Queen.
Yeah. Oh, that's great. Quick, throw more coal into the back of her. You know, also walking through the little area where you see all the models and stuff, I am continually amazed at the amount of TNA in sci-fi modeling. And this is a subdued.
They specifically have a ruling that it can't be overtly. get over the top and explicit. On the slave layer scale, is it? I've seen a few that are borderline. I don't know if I haven't been over there. They used to have a separate little section that was a closed off room that then you could do whatever you wanted.
Really? And I've seen one or two that kind of went there. because i got. Here late so we just basically made a beeline here so i haven't seen this yet. Oh wait till you see well there's there's this one table it's just like i swear it's genie from i dream of genie flashing her gazongies and it's got little bitty stickers over the nipple part see if they do that they can get away with it okay really yeah but and i'm just looking at this and in over and over you're just seeing you know okay dave we were just talking about how boob armor is not really practical. Did you hear this?
Actually, I saw that post and the next day listened to your episode about it. Yeah, because, you know, boobs are sort of, they sort of focus the spear point into the wrong area. Yeah, it doesn't help you really. Ben is pointing at his sternum after miming boobs. The motion of a weapon going towards the boobular area.
You have a 50-50 chance of either deflecting them away or deflecting them into the sternum. Or going straight into your heart. Not a good idea. Not where you want a sword. No, not really.
So over there, there are all these little models of very busty, ass-endowed warrior women, you know, with the spears and the swords and nothing else. And I'm like, you never see any, like, well-endowed, overly muscular male warrior things with any... With a little sticker covering up their little area. There's a special room for that, probably. We just haven't been there, but somewhere I bet there's a convention just for that.
And by the way, speaking of being late to the game, you're just noticing that Sci-Fi and Fantasy likes TNA? I didn't have... I was shocked. Shocked, I tell you. I didn't have cable growing up.
I didn't have cable growing up. Just now. It is a wonderful world out there that I am just now noticing. Well, that's just it. It's like whenever you come to one of these things, they sort of take everything and focus it into one area.
And it's like just extreme. Like I've seen so many Millennium Falcons today. I've seen more Millennium Falcons today than I've ever seen in my life. I've seen more fake sci-fi boobies today than I've ever seen in my entire life. Don't lie.
Outside of my basement, I've seen more fake sci-fi boobies. This is, oh my gosh, it's great. That was Belle Dee. She's like two tables down. I was just thinking that.
I was like, it kind of looks like a Belle Dee. It's Belle Dee. Hi. Hi, welcome to Movie Meltdown. What's your name?
My name's Carrie. Carrie, what brings you down to Wonderfest? Friends. Friends? Yeah.
And to see this amazing Belle D shirt. Yes. Yeah. I actually just purchased a crew shirt that she did. Yeah, she's awesome.
It took a couple years. Can you paint a picture for the people listening of what you're looking at? It's kind of like a Betty Boop, but a little more childlike in nature and a very vibrant red vest jacket with the movie Meltdown logo. It's pretty awesome. Have you ever heard of movie Meltdown?
I have not. No, I have not. I'm a new fan, I guess. This is the episode to start with. Wait a minute.
With this set up, I don't know. We'll go back and pick you out a good episode. Hold on. We're picking gold here. What?
We are movie-themed. Many group conversations, some of which may lead nowhere. Can I ask something real quick? Courtney, you're wearing a... Carrie, I'm sorry.
Oh, it's Countess Carrie. I thought it said Courtney Carrie. You're wearing a Ghostbusters shirt. Yes. And are you wearing Ecto-1 earrings?
Actually, no, but they're Hearst earrings, actually. Nice. Kind of the interest that I was going for there, so nice catch. See, girls, I notice these things. That's why you're married.
I'm the. I don't notice anything. I'm the enlightened podcaster. He's sensitive. What has been your favorite thing that you've seen so far?
Actually, there's a dragon model over on the other side that's pretty wicked. Just like vinyl kit? It's about 18 inches tall, and it looks like a pet. It looks like something you would have sitting on your living room floor, and your child would play with it. They put together some good stuff, I have to give them credit.
Yeah, it's pretty awesome. Are you thinking of purchasing Cedric? If I could paint, I surely would. Oh, it's a kit. Yeah, it's a model kit.
Yeah, it's pretty neat. Yeah, that's sort of the beauty of this show also is like they've got the display models, but a lot of them you can go get the kit in the other room and like you can do your version of it at home. Yeah, if you have the skill. If you have the skill to paint, definitely. I don't.
That's why I don't do any of that. Or you can be utterly disappointed when you get home and can't make it work right. Yeah. Where's the table where you purchase talent? I learned that.
When the models are $ 300, the last thing you want to do is take it home and give it a go. Where's his back leg? I learned my lesson with my Star Wars van snap-together model. When I couldn't snap it together and get it to work right, I was just like, yeah, this is probably not my area. This frame is bent.
You were into the layer of skin, you know, when I was gluing it together. I have it, but it still has glue on it to this day. Hey, Countess, let me ask you one more thing. Sorry, I'm taking over here. Feel free.
Just stand back. He does this. Are you, have you seen anything today that you would find offensive, that you maybe think, ooh, that's too far? Don't touch that. Actually, I haven't seen it today, but I haven't been in the model room.
But they had a bust last year of basically a severed head. Nice. And it was, it was CSI. detail it was extremely. I remember that because it was human it. Was very human like it looked like if you saw it in a bag in an alley you would think that it was a human head it was pretty.
Incredible and how much was that thing going it wasn't. For sale it was actually in the contest i'm sure if. You add how much would you pay if you threw enough money at him he would probably. Part with it and i would say it would probably go in the in a thousand or up Probably. I mean, it was like.
Arm and a leg, right? Well, no, it was like movie-grade quality. It was movie-grade, yes. Probably that is their job on the side. Are we sure it wasn't just a human head lemonade?
Or it could have been a human head. Dipped in something and set up on a pedestal, yeah. I tried to enter one of those one time, and they wouldn't let me. Isn't it funny how movie-grade... the movie grade standard changes throughout the years. Like, say you're Vincent Price, House on the Hill.
It's just a skeleton held together by wires. Look at this realistic blood. And that was technically movie grade, quote unquote. That's true. Yeah, when you think about all the props they used in Star Wars and things like that today, and you're like, wow, we go to great lengths.
Dave actually has the camera light thing handle thing that they use as the lightsaber. Yeah, it's an external flash from, I think it's from the 60s. I found it at a yard sale. How did you find it? I found it at a yard sale for five bucks and I grabbed it and paid for it before I told them what it was.
And then you told them as you were getting ready to run out of the yard. By the way, it's a lightsaber. Bye! That's great. I'm going to go put this on eBay for $ 4, 000.
Bye! Boy, that's prying out of my cold dead hand is. What it's doing. Nice. That's cool.
Yeah. Well, we don't want to take up any more of your time here. We've already ambushed you enough. Well, how often do you get to have a countess on your podcast? It's true.
We appreciate you. Tell her where to find this so she can hear herself on the internet. MovieMeltdown.com, but assuming you don't remember, you can take one of these flyers. Oh, isn't this nice? It's original artwork.
We had that done. I keep making people do artwork for us. I'm not sure why. I'm not sure if anybody else cares. But we, Bill D, this is Eric Chu.
I keep making people do artwork. And I can only draw boobs. That's why you never ask me. Yeah, there is a reason I haven't asked you. Yeah, you just bring the personality, right?
That's what we call it, personality. Oh, we should give her one of our cards. This is our podcast. That's cute. Yeah, I would say sister show, but I don't know.
See, thanks for work. See, thanks for work. Yay! This isn't the Christmas special. Short circuit comes alive.
He's my favorite guy on the show, by the way. I mean, there's these other guys, but he's my favorite. Towerbot's the best guy. I'm telling you. He doesn't leave the tower because of the 50-foot extension cord thing.
Well, neither does Ben. Thanks, guys. Have fun. Thank you. Ben's actually running on reserves right now.
Oh, yeah. His battery winds down eventually. And then he gets sad. There are only two modes with Ben. I've seen the sad Ben.
It's just like a space bomber. It's either up or down. That's right. And you better get your direction right because you don't want to be there when it's coming down. Space bombers are like Ben's moods.
Well, let me ask you guys this. Since we're sitting here with all the spaceship models and everything, are there any spaceships in movies that you looked at and you're like, that's just dumb. I don't like that. I have to say, well, that initial time I saw the Borg ship, I went, what the hell kind of ship is that? I mean, as time's gone on, I've realized it doesn't matter.
It can be a big cube flying through space. But initially, I was just like. What? That's not a ship. You stupid steampunk bastards.
So, yeah, I was just like... That one struck me as odd initially, I'll have to say. As time's gone on, I think the Borg are pretty awesome, but that ship still seems kind of like an odd. Way to go. See, it's so unnatural.
It is. We're not used to it with our space shuttles and, you know... Our Mercury. That's not how we build things at all. Our Geminis.
Our Geminis. And our Apollo. Oh, wait, we're out. We don't make ships anymore. Our nothing.
Anyway. Our theoretical ships that we don't have. Our pretend ships. You know, it's funny. When I was a kid, for Christmas or something, I got like a weird red-colored space shuttle toy thing.
Probably something you get at like a dollar store now. I mean, it was really, really cheap. It was just like a stocking stuffer thing. And I was telling a kid on my street, That I had got a spaceship that looked like the thing that Buck Rogers was flying. I'm talking about the Gil Gerard 1980s Buck Rogers.
So he was all excited thinking I had one of the little star fighters. And when he saw it, he basically said the seven-year-old equivalent of what? hell is this and i was trying to explain it's the ship that buck rogers was flying in before he got sent to the future you know and you know ranger seven the last space probe and he was not buying it. And if it takes that much explanation you're not gonna impress a kid you're not selling it a kid's gonna be like dumb moving on. Oh my god but okay i've a spaceship i found i didn't like and i apologize i was not excited about the a-wing fighter because to me it's... You're wrong.
Well, yeah, but to me it seemed to be. I'll be cruising around in my sporty A-Wing and. You'll be, you know. Puttering around in the B-Wing. Clunking along in your Edsel.
And it's because I think between the time period between Star Wars and Return of the Jedi came out, you may recall when I saw the Millennium Falcon, I was like, why is the control pod on the side? That doesn't make sense. By the time Return of the Jedi came around, I was like, it's stupid to have the cockpit right in dead center. Why don't they do something more imaginative? And why is it all smooth and stuff, you know?
It's like I'd been ruined, I guess. I don't know. Staying in this realm. The B-Wing fighter never made sense to me. Yeah, I'll give you that one.
I always thought that was weird. You talk about the Falcon having an off-center control. I mean, that whole ship swung around. How did it land? It's like the selling point for the toy was whatever position you put it in, the cockpit will always be right side up.
But that only works in gravity scenarios as you're playing with it. But in space, yeah, I know. While we're in that universe, how about the podcars? What if you don't like your stupid guy that you're stuck with? And I'm like, I'm stuck with Jimmy.
Shut up, Jim. You mean the twin pod cloud? Yeah, the whole cloud cars just look kind of girly to me. As a youngster. Why do you need two pilots?
That's what I'm saying. I'm like, it doesn't make sense. Either you need one and make it just a smaller ship, or if you needed to carry more people, wouldn't you just make it a bigger ship that you could, like, load things into? But it's just, it's like a motorcycle with a sidecar. Did you have that toy?
No, because I thought it was, it looked like a girly toy to me. I was just like, what is this cloud planet? It was a blind orange. What? Girly twin, yeah, I wanted, you know, I wanted Slave 1, damn it.
That was my ship. And I had that, and it was awesome. And it's weird. It doesn't make any sense why it's like that. It gets in this way and flies this way, and it pops up to the top.
And I'm just like, I don't care. It's awesome. Yeah, I love that. And I thought that the A-Wing was too much like a conventional aircraft, I guess. And, like, Slave I was weird.
I still don't know which way is up, technically. Well, it's a fire spray class vehicle, by the way. Please explain. Well, it shoots a lot, anyway. It shoots a lot.
It shoots a lot. It sprays fire. It's right there in the name. He is Boba Fett, damn it. That's what he does.
Fire is sprayed by it. Well, anyway, I was down here earlier with my good lady wife, Eddie, and we were walking through the room over there, and we were kind of surprised at stuff we didn't see. We didn't see anything for Game of Thrones, which is kind of all the rage right now, and We only found, we found nothing for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is kind of her favorite thing, except for a library play set for $ 125. And no action figures included, by the way, on that. Well, of course.
And so it's, I guess this is tiered more toward, this convention is more towards kind of a. It's a little more old school. Like a spaceship-y kind of. Well, it's like classic sci-fi and horror. That's usually more of what they end.
Up focusing on is just stuff that's really old school. And then it just sort of spills over because we're geeks and we like a lot of different stuff. So there isn't a lot of sword and sorcery stuff. This is mainly technological sci-fi, right? There's some of that.
In the modeling. If you go there, you'll see some Konins and you'll see a lot of that kind of stuff that gets worked in. It definitely has a fantasy angle to it. But I think it just sort of goes in waves. Like some years I think it's more.
It is weird, the Game of Thrones. Because like Buffy just seems like it's on a downward wave now. Because it's been so long in the series that every once in a while you'll see one of them turn up at a convention. But other than that, it's not a whole lot of focus. On that anymore.
Because I've seen a ton of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea stuff. See, that's old school. Which just surprises me. That's old school. And I guess it's because they had a cool ship.
Buffy didn't. It's true. There's no Buffy mobile. Why wasn't there a Buffy mobile? The Scooby gang should have had a mystery machine, really.
Truthfully. Why was there no Malibu Dream Castle? Well, everything in Sunnydale was so close together, everybody just ran to where the bomb was. They did only have one street. That became the joke of the series.
So we're going to go out on the street and shoot this scene. Do it from the other direction. It looks like a different street. It's a totally different street. Oh, God.
Oh, man. You know, okay, when I was a kid, I also, again, going back to spaceship designs, that didn't make sense. I never really understood the whole alligator on the skis configuration for the Battlestar Galactica, for a Battlestar, you know, because I never could figure out where the launch tubes were. I always thought maybe they came out of the front. I think that's personal, Ben.
I don't know if you're supposed to be asking these kinds of questions. But I don't think that's where the launch tubes were. You stay out of my launch tubes, okay? So now on the reimagining, this is something I may want to ask Mr. Chew.
Where are the launch tubes? Because I think maybe they come out of the side of the pod. Yeah, they come out of the side of the pod. But shouldn't they go forward? Forward, not sideways?
Like on an aircraft carrier, they launch them off the front. They don't go sideways. No, but the Battlestar comes off and shoots off the side, so it can throw more fire a longer. Oh, like a broadside. Yeah, a broadside.
I see. See, and you want to shoot the... vipers out, but if you're in a fight, you want to be able to get them back pretty quickly. That's why the pods are so you can land multiple fighters at the same time. We've got to get Dave and Eric two together. I think they're on the same wavelength here.
I just love in the reimagining that the, I guess it would be the starboard pod was still a gift shop throughout the entire series. It was a museum slash gift shop. Nice. That was a nice touch, I always thought. How do you guys feel about sound in space when you see it in movies?
No one can hear you scream. But they can hear a TIE fighter go by. That's because it sounds cool. It's not screaming. It's howling.
That's the science behind it. Cool is more important. Cool trumps science. Absolutely. If they switched to the outer space and there was no sound, people would be yelling, Sound!
Where's the sound? Something's messed up! I want my money back! Go up to the popcorn guy and tell him this isn't making any noise. That's why they had to go to classical music in 2001, because people would be like, where's the sound?
This is broken. So yeah, I guess we've rambled on enough for this episode. We've had our ramble quotient. I have no idea what you're going to call this one. Boobs in Space or something?
I don't know. What are you going to name this one? Ben feels like a teenage girl. Steampunk is back, bitch. Ben is so passe.
Ben's Tandy only goes up to 2009. Reluctantly. So, not that we didn't already play it, but tell people where to find you guys on the interwebs. Well, let me look at my. You better check your card.

And I don't know how you've gotten this if you don't know to go there yet. I would hope by now they figure it out. Oh, chicken and the egg, man, chicken and the egg. I know. One of those crazy time loops, speaking of sci-fi.
Well, let's take a break. I'm going to go and. We haven't even finished this one yet. I'm going to go get in my Emperor's Royal Guard costume. You're still rambling on.
What are you talking about? Bibs on the shock stick. That's code. That's totally code. What?
That's the title of this episode. I'm leaving you two alone now. You seem like you need to get a room in this hotel. Oh, man, there's so many rooms right above our heads. All right, so I think if you guys like the crossover episodes here, I mean, we've toyed with it a little before, but this is a pretty good example of what we were like when we worked together.
I'm sorry. But if you actually like it, email us, get a hold of us on Facebook, and let us know you like this idea, and maybe we'll plan some of those future crossover episodes that we've been toying with for quite a while now. And send us lots of money, I suppose. Ben likes that idea, so. Hey, it ain't cheap to rent a van to the Creation Museum.
That's true. What makes us talk? Money. What makes us shut up? Money.
More money. So, six in one, half dozen in the other. All right. Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next week.
Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening. And what's that saying again? The only words, words can't kill me. But I can't even spell them And the cadence of what she says is well Let's talk about spaceships or anything Except you and me, okay Let's talk about spaceships or anything Except you and me, okay Okay.
Don't look now, but. There's a spider crawling on the wall behind you. I should have paid attention and not to run. Let's talk about spaceships or anything except you and me, okay? Let's talk about spaceships or anything except you.
And me, okay? Okay. Okay. Let's talk about spaceships or anything except you and me, okay? Let's talk about spaceships.
Or anything except. You and me, okay? Let's talk about spaceships or anything except you. And me, okay? Okay.
