Hi, my name is Jennifer Lawrence and you're listening. To Movie Meltdown. It's showtime. The following feature has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.

Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power. I'm a nerd, and I'm pretty proud of it. What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. We are coming to you live via digital recording from the Bardstown here in Louisville. I once again am Brian.

I'm Greg. I'm Lucy. And I know normally you guys like to leave your guests sitting there for 15 minutes and make them be really quiet, but I thought I would go ahead and bring you in now. Our special guest, the reason we're here today, is Chris and Graham from Comedy Film Nerds. Great to be here.

Hello. And I thought it was neat, too, because when we first came to the room, like the showroom, we were like, oh, this is a cool place. Maybe we'll find the green room. You guys were sitting in the green room quietly waiting for us to discover you. Mm-hmm.

It's not like, hey, guys, back here. No, no. They're like, shh. Don't make a sound. Let them find us.

See what those weirdos do. If they don't find us, we don't do the show. Yeah, yeah. No, we're doing the show without them. We'll be like, so the guys are in the other room.

Where's all that whispering coming from? Shh. There they go. It's a hide-and-seek podcast. Didn't know that.

It's a good hide-and-seek podcast. We didn't tell you that. Like a scavenger hunt. That sounds delightful. 45 minutes till the guest found us.

So we only got a few minutes left to talk. I mean, you left us a trail of earbuds. Tweaked audio earbuds. Thank you very much. So those are your sponsors.

That's sponsor plug, plug. Nice. What do we have that in? I like to see it. Use the code.

Nope. Down. Anyway. So, um, technically Graham, you've been on here before. Um, years and years ago, back when you were a fledgling little show.

And you were like, you. Know, actually, I think Doug was kind of like, would you please take this guy off my hands for an hour? And I'm like, all right, I'll do you a favor, Doug. So, you know, we kept you busy for a little while while Doug took a nap. But I think we at least got a basic with you that time.

So, Chris, this is your first time. Glad to be here. We'd let you kind of do a little intro to you and, you know, I guess how you got into comedy and then how you and why you hooked. Up with this guy. Yeah.

Well, the story is remarkably similar. I went to film school, started doing stand-up, came out to L.A., made a bunch of short films, written screenplays, television, and hooked up with Graham on an Internet show. This is before Internet shows were viable or popular. Or no one even knew what the Internet was yet. And then we had a lunch meeting a couple years later.

I'm like, hey, did you know the Internet could do this? No, I didn't. A couple years later, let's call it 10. Let's call it 10 years later. I'm not good with dates.

I'm still downloading porn. Hold on. That's why I always win at Leonard Maltin, because he doesn't understand time. I don't understand time, dates, or reality. You'll do fine on our show, man.

You'll do fine. So, Graham and I, we actually started the website first, comedyfilmnards.com. We wanted it to be kind of a portal for comedians, filmmakers, film talk, film discussion. We wanted to make it very different in the fact that it came from a love of film and a film knowledge first, and then it was funny. We would never just start making fun of movies or just making movie jokes.

We really came from a background of filmmaking really and. You're really trying to branch out from what is on the internet otherwise yeah everyone else who has a show i don't know who i'm. Talking about it not our show but so and that's where we expanded we added the podcast and we've expanded the um the website and now we're we're our next big expansion will be for to help filmmakers with digital distribution we have four films right now including graham's uh l'afghanistan which you pay whatever you want That's a special model of pay what you think is fair. The rest of them are about $ 11. 99.

And what we're going to do is open it up to more filmmakers for digital distribution because iTunes takes way too much of a cut. Yeah. The whole point of what we're doing is to eliminate the middleman artists, um, writers, filmmakers, comedians need to go directly to their fans. And that's one of the reasons we joined the all things comedy network is because they, it was run by two comics and they share the same philosophy. Yeah.

You guys have streamlined it and sort of found your audience. And, uh, so I guess we just need more. Well, yeah, but we're, we're very pleased that the way things are going and the audience that we have is amazing. And, uh, I know we've gone on podcasts where it's like, oh man, we hate our audience. They're such weirdos and creeps.

I'm like, what does that say about you then? Yeah. What are you doing? Who are you attracting? That you are ashamed of the people who listen to you.

Yes. We have awesome people. Ours just made us a comic book. Starring us. Isn't that awesome?

Isn't that cool? Isn't that awesome? Yeah, we get cool swag. We get cool stuff from Japan. I mean, really, really fun, great audience.

You guys people do this. Cupcakes yeah i know big fan japan she's awesome uh made us cupcakes with our logo on them god wow like we have all kinds of cool stuff that's it's that's and like that's part of the thing. They had ricin but they were still really good they were high gluten yeah as much as they could pack into it just for gram. And i've been in the middle of it there was a transformer yeah So, uh, no, but we, you know, Chris and I talked about this early on when we first were hatching the plan for. This in 2007, the website launched in April of 2008.

And then about a year and a half after that was when the podcast came out. Um, Was like creating. Or as I say, two weeks later. Two weeks later, yeah. We met in 94, and then a couple weeks later, we hatched it all together.

And then we drove here. That's in Chris's timeline. And then I had two children. Right in that same month. Somewhere in that.

Maybe six weeks? Yeah, maybe six weeks. Very similar. Where we wanted to create a community, you know, and we really found that. Like on the message boards and on the Facebook fan page. and on Twitter that we've got this community of fans that love talking about movies.

And we've really done a good job, I think, of we always say keep the debates friendly, keep them nice. This isn't some political talk show. So, you know, when people have even called us out, like recently I got called out for some of the comments I made in the Star Trek spoiler rep episode. I have some for that, too. But they're very nice.

Oh, snap. Here we go. Nothing smokes out a nerd like Star Trek. No. Holy shit.

And I'm more Star Wars, but you know. Yeah. It doesn't matter. Unbelievable. It's true.

And that's the kind of thing. We've learned about movies from our fans. Everyone's got one foot into Star Trek. Yeah. Except for J.J.

Abrams. It's more like a toe. I'll give you that one, then. But yeah, it is funny. You do find that there are a lot of people out there.

And there are a lot of smart people out there. And you just have to weed through the morons on the internet. And you find your fan base. And those are the good people that support you and that keep coming back every week. We early on would call out. people's uh shitty postings.

Or comments we would literally because you should we treated them like hecklers yeah this isn't some anonymous thing fucko like i'm coming at you you want you know who i am you know what i look like i will come at you and if you want to hide behind your itunes profile well then go suck it. Well we had that we had somebody that we we said something horrible on the show and it was it was pretty blatantly stupid but it was like meant to be like we were just like making a gross over exaggeration about something and we did it on purpose And then somebody called out with, like, this ridiculous fact of how that. You really alienated this many people in your audience. And, like, I sent him this big long.

How do they know how many people you have? Yeah, exactly. But, like, he, like, sent me this, like, you know, angry little post. And I, like, I sent him this big long, like, well-worded one. And he was like.

Oh well I didn't expect you to answer it. Like he then came back with a normal like well word you can calm them down yeah and. He's just like oh well we've. Gotten plenty of email manifestos about certain things and I've written back and gone well actually this is the point I. Was making and they go oh okay I was like, we were joking.

I don't know if you got that. A lot of comedy. And then there's that small percentage where it doesn't matter. It was like, the people we were making fun of, one of the people's on the show that we were making fun of. So, I mean, you're supposed to pay attention to that.

I said, we got one of those. And the person's gripe was somewhat... There was some validity to it. That's the other thing. Because we weeded out a lot of the wingnuts, when we do get a gripe email, it's like, oh, this is a reasonable thing.

This is like an argument a friend of mine would bring to my attention or something. Or like something on the site that's not working or something like that. Well, that's been really helpful. We need to know that, yeah. And our message boards just went through that right now.

It's like, you guys need a moderator. And we're like, okay, well, you want to do it? Yeah, sure. So now we have a message board moderator. Sucker, got the job.

Yeah. And then there was comments like, well, you know, the message boards, we can't really change the topics and all that stuff. And it's like, all right, we'll let the moderator do it. So it took it. We do everything at a very slow pace.

But it gets done. Working on a shoestring. It gets done. I understand that. It took us weeks.

But now, you know, the moderator has power to change everything on the message boards and everything's going a lot smoother. Now we're just having some problem with spammers. Like what happens is that we were going to. Spammers on the message boards, as everyone does. I've seen a few of them.

The capture wasn't working or something. So we put in all these safeguards to get rid of the spammers. And then people were emailing and going, hey, I can't get through. Now my post is spam. I can't make my smart-ass comment.

The best part was that the guy that recommended these spam filters was the first one that got bounced when we turned them on. Oh, robots. So we're still finding that balance, but we're almost there. Very nice. All right.

Well, I guess if we want to. That's our show. Thanks, guys. That's it. We're done.

If we want to get into the grind here, we had, you know, we were trying to come up with a good topic. Grammy said we'll throw out a general summer movies kind of thing. So I'm assuming you meant like Summer 42 and A Summer Place and, you know, the. Frankie and Annette movies. I'm prepared to do an hour on these.

So I hope you brought your game. I could talk about the Mark Harmon Vehicle Summer School. Yes. Because we in that movie helped design our first website. Exactly.

But bam. You didn't know that was going to happen today, did you? I thought it was all just an excuse for you to talk about the endless summer. But, you know. I wish I could talk about that.

It's a surf movie. We could talk surfing all day. But no, I figure we can hit it however you want. We can do stuff that's already come out. And then I've got a list of stuff coming out later this summer if we want to address what we think of some of these upcoming releases.

So I don't know. Do we want to get into Star Trek? It's your show. Why don't you guys pick? We did a little on it at the beginning, but I hadn't even seen it then, so I don't think I've talked about it.

I don't know. My take on it was like there was a lot. Of negative stuff I heard at the very beginning. And then I saw it and I was just like, to some extent, I'm like, I don't even know what you're griping about. Like, if you were on board with the first one, it's a lot more of that.

Like, it has some of the problems the first one did, but I'm like, it's still just big, dumb fun. Well, that goes to a different issue. And this is true with all movies, especially big summer blockbuster movies. Expectations and also chatter. And when those things don't necessarily match up or you hear too much or you have too much of one, It's not going to match up when you see the film.

Like if you go into Star Trek and you haven't heard anything, you've avoided Facebook, that's the best way to see big summer movies. Stay off of Facebook. Yeah, it really is. You've got to go dark. You really do right before you see these movies because there's so much chatter.

Pretty much. And the other thing is, too, it's like what kind of expectations are you bringing to the table? Did you like the first one? Did you hate the first one? And I will definitely agree with you.

There was a lot of things that happened in the second one that kind of happened in the first one. So if you weren't happy with the stuff in the first one, or it happens worse in the second one. We found, like, I was actually more forgiving on the first one. And I still liked the second one, but, you know, the lack of attention to detail on the science fiction elements in certain plot points really was like, okay, now that's just sloppy. You know, I. and we talked about it on the show and, and cause we, we talked about it on our regular episode.

Then we did a spoiler alert episode. Right. So we've talked about it. Geeks don't ever like to talk about. Stuff.

But the thing that happened was we sort of, I think Chris and I both kind of had a, wow, that was fun while we were watching it. And then afterwards started thinking, wait a minute. And when we talked about that on the show, we got a lot of posts and stuff from people who were, who were saying the same thing. Like, that was a fun ride, but then afterwards you go, wait, what's this thing and that thing? You almost have buyer's remorse a little bit after you see it because the movie does such a great job of bringing you into the world and tricking you and using all the big, epic kind of tricks to bring you into the world.

And really, it was like Prometheus. It falls apart on the details. I have huge issues with Prometheus. It falls apart on the details. That's a little unfair to Star Trek.

It is. Prometheus is an egregious crime. But they shared a writer. That's one of the problems. And you can see that, those fingerprints on both movies.

Was it Lindelof? Yeah. Well, it was the lost guy, wasn't it? It was the lost guy, yeah. You're done writing science fiction.

Yeah, and it was the, because it was the exact same problems. It was like, you can't introduce the science fiction element ignore it, or make it magic. And then just, you have to be a logical programmer. Oh, you mean like you get on five seasons of loss and just introduce bullshit and then spend an entire episode about summoning love affair? And here's the problem.

It's like, in somebody, in a creator's head, they're like, well, this validates me. You know, look how great it did. Magic validates me. Yeah, and so I'm just going to keep doing this. It's like Pirates of the Caribbean when you look at those movies.

The first one, it was okay. It actually had a little bit of logic and a script progression to it. The other ones after that, you're like, well, just kind of making it up as we go along. It's like that bullshit ending of Lost. See, I will give you the big part I agreed with was Magic Blood.

I don't understand the point of. I mean, that is just such a quick fix. Resurrection Blood? yeah well yeah magic. Just magic blood that like fixes all your problems and like in the old series where it took a movie to fix that thing we just painted you know the corner we just painted ourselves into and it didn't work. And we're done the genesis device yeah was flawed it didn't work and it was still an entire movie to get that to work and it was still didn't work so.

I'll give you that one that i definitely had issues with um the one i was gonna say i think you were almost like thinking too smart for regular people Or human beings, really, because I remember you had an issue with the Uhura fight on there. I kind of liked that, because I was like. The fight with Spock on the shuttle? Yeah, because I was like, that's a relationship. I was like, Vulcan or not, that dude is in a relationship right now, and she is pissed.

And the purpose of that scene was like, it was played for laughs, it was comic relief. The problem with it is it just didn't read well. It didn't really work. Some people, some fans of ours who listened to that and then didn't agree, they were... one of the justifications that I've heard was that was, these are all the young, they're all kids, they're all young. So they're not mature enough.

Then why are they officers? Why do they have their own ship? Flying a fucking skillion dollar ship. Starfleet 90210, is that what we have? I don't give a shit.

And I'm like, well, if Aaron Spelling gives you this shit, you can fly. So Tori's the captain now? Wait a minute. And what's really funny is not all of them are that young. You know, Karl Urban, not in his 20s.

And it's one of my pet peeves that Hollywood, when they do this. Like, I remember. Star Trek babies? No, I remember Apollo 13, the movie. Yeah.

I liked most of it. When they're in the capsule arguing with each other, I've heard interviews with the actual astronauts going, we had no goddamn time to argue. Because we had to get the fuck back to Earth. We were going to suffocate in space. And I hate that when they're like, we need to put a human element in there.

These are the most trained people in the world, in Star Trek, in the goddamn galaxy. And they're really going to be like, you're not my boyfriend. Like, shut up. It demeans the strength. Of uhura it really does star trek like she is she oh she's just a high school girl like all women are dumb teenagers is that what you're saying we're all high star.

Trek was always a much more mature like i mean it really was it was always like it was always science fiction for smart people and it always that's the way it progressed you know until the last couple tv shows but um What's interesting, too, is you look at, like, with J.J. Abrams, really? Star Trek and Star Wars? Would a young Kate Mulgrew be arguing with her boyfriend when she first got into the Federation? No way.

She was a great representation of a captain and especially a female captain. I guess we hadn't progressed to that point yet. She was a great leader who was also female. She was a great female leader, but also it wasn't like, oh, she's a good leader. For a girl.

She was an amazing leader, the way she was written and the way she acted. And the way she performed it, that was never an issue. The issue was that the franchise was so tired by that time. Like, oh my God, the only thing we can make it better is, all right, add more Borg. with breasts uh but but what i. Mean it's some board titty in there that's how it works i believe but but now look at like if you look back when star trek was popular and when star wars was popular they were just coming out they were huge franchises uh although star trek was interesting where it got canceled and then brought back.

Yeah this is how ridiculous it is you know jj abrams is rebooting both franchises what if when you know say in the 70s or even the 80s you're like oh george lucas is gonna do star trek You'd be like, what? That makes no sense. You know, they're not, they're completely different. There's more people in Hollywood that can do things that understand licenses and properties. Like, he was a big Star Wars fan.

I'm excited to see what he'll do with Star Wars. He admitted, didn't really care for Star Trek. Great. Give him the entire property. Well done, Hollywood.

So it's really, it goes to the heart of the problem with Hollywood is there's more than four people that can make big movies. There really are. So, you know, open up the Rolodex studios. Yeah. Yeah, that one worries me a little bit, just because they are such different approaches.

Which, again, I mean, Star Trek became very much Star Wars when he took over. Yeah, he would be, you know, Aronofsky would be a great director for a Star Trek movie. You look back at a movie like Pi, you know, or even The Fountain, you know, there's such an intelligence to that science fiction. Even The Fountain kind of went everywhere. But with Pi, you saw that.

I'm like, that's hard science fiction. You could see him, and especially with the way he can direct actors and relationships with the wrestlers, It would be a great choice for Star Trek. It would be interesting. It would definitely be a different direction for them. I think, though, with Star Trek, to me, I'm not the world's biggest Star Trek fan.

I've always been. The Star Wars fan. Oh, then you should direct one of the movies. We'll give you the next one. I've always saw Star Trek the show and Star Trek the movies as completely different things.

The movies are popcorn fun movies. broad audience star trek the show is a little bit hard science. Fiction the medium is the message and. So star trek the tv show is almost the canon to me the the movies were crazy you're saving whales no this this is a dumb plot you know so the the movies i don't really care about jj abrams but if they were to come back with we are going to reboot star trek the series they're going to have to have a true Star Trek fan to even go down that path. Well, what they would do is they would, the way they have been doing it, I doubt they'd do any of the characters they've already been done. It's such a huge world and universe.

I can't believe they did it with the movie, really. One of those things, that was going to piss off some nerds. Look how skeptical people were when Next Generation came out. Like, oh, there's no way this is going to be any good and this is awful. I remember Patrick Stewart doing on an interview saying even the studios thought this is going to tank.

We've got one season. No one's going to watch this. And it was an instant hit. And Patrick Stewart said as soon as they saw the ratings, they started hiring more writers and producers after that because everything was on a shoestring. Those special effects in the first seasons were rough.

And you look at it too, and that was a series that Gene Rodbury was still involved with. You have the other series that were very hit and miss until they just kind of really went off the rails and then like, hey, time to give it a rest. Now, I will give J.J. Abrams a lot of credit. He really did invigorate the franchise, and I'm excited to see what's going to come next.

Okay, so I don't want to dwell on the Star Trek thing. The only other one I was going to, well, other than if you go online, there are geeks, and I'm going to steal your line, there are geeks in way deeper basements than you and I. That have made a list. Of how many admirals have gone rogue in the different series over the years. So that idealized, yeah, I was just like, that can't, because you were saying that.

I was like, yeah, it's kind of weird. But I was like, that can't be the only time. Like, it's such a standard plot for any story. Because that was Gene Roddenberry's vision. That's how it was like the utopian society.

But they've, yeah, they've introduced a bunch of them. That's the one I was like, okay, that's fair. They weren't, yeah, but they weren't as brutally cold-blooded as the killing machines. Yeah, he's crazy. Yeah, he's crazy.

They all had some sort of idealized notion. Of that they were doing the right thing. That they were doing something right, and it just was. Not just a warmonger. Yeah, yeah, this guy was just like.

Oh, it's... Just killing Starfleet officers just because they get in his way. Right, oh, he's a Halliburton. Yeah. You know, like this one was. and then the only other thing i was gonna say and it took me i didn't realize that when i watched it the first time the the carol character like everybody has issues as to why the hell she's there other than to be in her underwear which you know that's fine who doesn't you know who who didn't see kirk looking at her like that didn't surprise me but did you realize who that character is in the other timeline.

Yeah that becomes his ex it becomes yeah yeah that's his baby mama so i'm like obviously they're just planting that seed like Granted, she should have had a hell of a lot more to do in this movie, but I was like, that's the reason she's there. It's because they're planning for seven movies, and they want to make sure to work this relationship in somewhere down the line. So let's just make her show up. So, yeah, I agree she should have had a lot more to do. She should have had a lot more to do, and then all she does is in her underwear.

Like, it's Kirk, right? Like, she's a cute blonde. She could be in a nun outfit, and he would be. He would have still been checking her out. I did want to ask, did anybody else...

Get the feeling of another movie in that opening scene. Because to me, it was almost exact. It was almost beat for beat, and I liked it. I appreciated it. Why did he grab the scroll again?

To get that little... To me, I was like. Someone was like, oh, he grabbed it to distract them. Yeah. He intentionally grabbed that to run, and he knew he was going to get chased and distract them and have no exit strategy and jump off.

To distract them from not noticing him. He knew he was supposed to not get. Yeah, prime directive and wait, now I grab something. But we grab the skull just in case I break the prime directive. Truthfully, I really liked that scene because it was fun and it did sort of show a dynamic with the cast that I think was sometimes missing in that first movie.

But I think... as it like started and they started chasing him like is this just the opening. To raiders now because there's guys throwing spears at you and they're tribal dudes and so wait jj abrams is ripping off spielberg that never happens uh i don't know i was just like this is really obvious to me but i mean it's his hero i guess he does what he thinks is right but i was like go load up. I just. Oh, he went boop-boop? Yeah, he went boop-boop.

Yeah, that's exactly what he did. And you speak that language. If you need to get it, we can break here. Oh, let's take a break. Yeah, take a break.

We'll hang out. Okay. Sorry, guys. The road's getting long. I know you don't travel very much.

Golden, pure, creamery butter. Rich, flavorful, satisfying. That's what it takes for the finest buttered popcorn, and that's what we use. See for yourself why there's no showtime treat to equal the crisp, delicious flavor of hot popcorn that's bathed in real melted butter. It's at the concession stand now.

Everybody's going to Bikini Beach to have fun in the sun with that musical beach party gang. Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Martha Heyer, Harvey Lembeck, Don Rickles. and special guest star Kenan Wynn. I am determined to prove that you young people are borderline cases leaning toward feeblemindedness with an abnormal preoccupation with sex. Bikini Beach. Surfing monkey shines versus the call of love.

Bon Zippers rats versus the beach party gang going drag strip. A secret weapon. Yes, love. A secret weapon. Yeah!

Everybody's going to Bikini Beach. Do you believe this? Hey guys, look what I've got. Check out these awesome earbuds I'm using right now. Look at that.

That's wood right there. That's actual wood. Why would you use wood to make technology? Because they're... It's like...

They're steam. Is steampunk really wood? I thought it was more of a brass thing. Well, you got to work the wood in to hold the brass together. These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions with a mic built in, mind you.

But yeah, where would I get these you wonder? Tweaked Audio. Way to pitch. You want to hear more, you say? TweakedAudio.com.

Hey, they are available in three styles and seven colors only. And they sound pretty damn good. I kind of forgot because I hadn't had my old pair in a while and I was using the knockoff crappy ones I bought at the store. And I got these and put them in. I was like, oh, shit, that's right.

These are actually really good. So they are professional quality earbuds, mind you. And, you know, noise reducing, compatible with your iPods and most phones, unless you have a dumb phone. You should really get a smartphone, not a dumb phone, right? So anyway, the basic rundown here, if you need yourself some earbuds, tweakedaudio.com.

And if you go there, there's a deal. There's a Meltdown deal. If you go, there's a discount code, and you put in Meltdown, you get 33% off and free shipping. You guys are excited, right? Yeah.

As well you should be. tweakedaudio.com. Use the Meltdown code. That's all I'm saying. Dave, I do not get superheroes. Oh, my God.

I don't get you. Tower bot here. Well, the meatbags were going to say that if you're a geek and like podcasts, then you could try to of Technobabble at www.toweroftechnobabble.com. Then this started. Well, it's up to you.

I'm gonna get my taser and put a stop to this. Towerbot out. Okay, monkeys. It's nap time. We've all got quirks.

I've got them. You've got them, Dave. That's what makes this character so, so compelling. Thumbs up from me. Same here.

This is Dean Cameron, also known as Chainsaw, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown. I'm Chainsaw. I'm Dave. We'll see you at the movies. It's part of your problem, you know.

You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show. The End. So don't see that movie?

I had fun with it. I just think it has some issues. But that was just like, boy! It was almost beat for beat in certain moments from Raiders. I was just like, we all know he's your hero.

Why wouldn't you disguise it a little and steal from Lucas for a minute? Yeah. Steal from somebody else! We all know you steal from Spielberg. That's your thing.

That was strange. That's a little love letter. And that's usually, I mean, you look at Super 8, I mean, it's so blatantly. Don't get me started on fucking Super 8. Yeah, well, I mean, it's so blatantly.

It was great for the first half hour. And again, that story with the kids is a really good story. I could care less about the rest of it. But, I mean, he has the... characters there he's got the heart of the movie is fine it's all the extremities that are dying it's like lost 60 percent of the loss is really good. The rest of it is the worst i've.

Ever seen yeah after the first like season started and i kind of saw it was getting to be one of those you can't just pick up i'm like you've got to be in from day one i was like. I don't have time for this. It's like i don't have as much. To invest in it Six years later, I was like, yeah, it's a good thing. I still don't have much time.

Speaking of looking back on when you mentioned the Raiders thing, my daughter, we were watching, obviously, an episode of Doctor Who. And there's one episode, they're on a space station. Thousands of years in the future, blah, blah, blah. It's stranded, and at one point, the Queen says to the Doctor, you're our only hope. And I was like, okay, here we go.

I kept quiet. I kept quiet. But then the two of them get sucked down into what looks like a trash compactor, right? And there's trash everywhere. What year was this?

This was, oh, this was, no, this was 2007, probably. And she goes, what. Are we watching, Star Wars? And I was like, I love my children. Way to call them out.

That's a good moment. Way to call them out. Yeah. Turned out to be they were on a tongue instead of a trash compactor, but they were feeling around the ground because they thought something was alive. Get on top of it.

Yeah. So I was very proud of her. All right, let's do it. All right. But yeah, okay, so we can move on from Star Trek.

We've geeked out enough on that. You keep saying that, yet you haven't done it. Right. Other thing. Let me tell you about Starfleet Academy.

No, okay. So i don't know where else do you want to just kind of hit the list of stuff coming out or um. I think whatever you want to do it's always much. More fun the bigger ones yeah the perspective let's talk about things we don't know what we're talking about yet like i. Said last year prometheus was the best movie i hadn't seen.

Yet that's true and i was looking forward to that man was i wrong i kind of knew i was gonna be wrong is the sad part i was like I'm going to miss so much on this. I have such high hopes and it's not going to be. I saw the trailer and I was like, this trailer is the greatest sci-fi movie I've ever seen. Don't watch the movie. I should have stopped there.

Yeah, that's it. Can we hit on The Hangover 3 at some point just so there can be some purpose to my having watched it? Go ahead. Go to town. No, I mean, that's it.

That's really all I have. That was awesome. When I was told that this was going to be a summer movie episode, I'm not a comic book person or a Star Trek person. So I decided to go the comedy route. Or a summer person.

She sees everything. She sees more than me. She's a winter poetry person. That's okay. That's my wheelhouse.

Has anybody noticed how much that term? We'll be looking forward to it. But so I watched that one night, and then the next day I watched The Internship. So that was my summer viewing. Wow.

I'm sorry. And you haven't hanged yourself? Wow. Actually, The Internship was not terrible, and I actually found it really interesting to watch it back-to-back with The Hangover 3, mostly because it was exactly the same premise as Old School, It was like he had sort of borrowed Todd Phillips' film from 10 years ago. But in doubt, it was so much heart.

It was actually a really lovely sort of movie. And the fact that he brought Owen Wilson in, and there were all these pep talks. I'm looking at the table, and clearly no one has seen this film but me, or has any intention to do so. But I was thinking 10 years ago, it might have been an actual good time to make that movie, where Google's not really cutting-edge technology right now. It just seems so dated for them to be excited to go to Google.

Are they spending the whole movie unclear on technology? We worked in a watch factory where we never had email accounts. Well, kind of. But it's also, it's very much old school in that they have to assemble this team of misfits who are going to. Revenge of the nerds.

But it actually, it kind of... And he makes Owen Wilson the romantic hero. Because Vince Vaughn wrote it and everything. And so, I don't know. I kind of liked that he just gave Owen Wilson something to do.

And that he sort of celebrated. Like being in a movie. Like being in a movie. Like a way to spend his time. Not good.

And then made him heroic in it, which I thought was a lovely gesture of friendship. If Lucy is giving a seal of approval to being in friendship, it's probably pretty good. It could have had a lot to do with the fact that I had suffered through The Hangover 3 the night before. At that point, your eyes are like, I just need to see anything. What did you think of The Hangover 3?

The same thing I thought of The Hangover 2 and maybe also The Hangover. Which is? It was just boring. Well, the thing is, it has no heart, and the internship actually had a lot of heart. I mean, those Hangover movies are so cynical at this point.

First one was just one joke, and then the second one was a repetition of that joke, and then the third one is just like. Well, the third one did something different. It had no jokes. Nice move. A fresh approach.

Yeah. It became an action movie where it's just like, oh, it's not these regular Joes that got into some shenanigans in Vegas. They're like accessories to murder. Yeah. It was like insane.

It's just movies about terrible people doing terrible things. Yeah. It's like, oh, none of this. Which can be really compelling if done properly. Right.

But that's not easy to do. No, it isn't. It's very hard to do but when it's done right it's hilarious like observe and report is a good example of that uh the entire black adder series on bbc is uh is like you're like okay that's how you do horrible people correctly. It's it's hard to go that dark and still make it an enjoyable. Movie but that's like breaking bad my wife and i would look at each other goes who are the person we're rooting.

For yeah yeah exactly what. This guy right And he's kind of an asshole. Yeah, he's the worst cancer. And he just gets worse. And yet you still root for him.

I'm like, I like the drug dealer only. Like the old drug dealer kid that can't get his shit together. That's the only one I like. I know. That's the most redeemable guy.

Right. Did we want to address Pain and Gain? Or should we leave it behind? I did some research and did notice that it was an April 11th release. So it might be.

It's a spring film. Okay. But you know I love a spring film. You're a spring kind of guy. Spring cleaning.

Clean out the studio vaults. Get rid of all these cobwebby movies that no one wants to see. I just liked your concept and it almost made me rethink it because I didn't want anything to do with it. But yeah, the fact that it's all about misinterpreting the American dream. And if there's ever a director that understands misinterpreting the American dream, it's Michael Bay.

Yeah. I was like, you got a point. If there's ever a guy who doesn't deserve to enjoy the American dream, it's Michael Bay. All right. I thought that was...

You know what? There was some criticism where like, oh, the painting game was Michael Bay's Fargo. And you know what? What's really interesting is technically that's correct. But technically it's correct because if you take a horrible, talentless filmmaker who doesn't understand character, plot, story, action, or movie making, and you had him make like a really quirky crime drama, that's what he would make because he has no idea what to fill the frame with.

That's an insult. to the entire state of North Dakota. We're sorry. We take no responsibility. Okay, if we want to move forward, do we want to just go to Man of Steel? All right.

Except we don't want to talk about Supergirl movies. Yeah, I haven't seen this one. Well, none of us have seen it yet. Yeah, it's not here yet. So, I don't know.

I'm concerned. I'm concerned. He's an odd director, especially for that franchise or new franchise, whatever they're planning on it becoming. You know what? It's really going to boil down to how hands-on Christopher Nolan was.

That was the only good thing was adding him. In this whole kind of process. Was his name just slapped on it and Zack Snyder kind of did whatever he wanted? Yeah. Was he involved in the development?

Was he looking at Dale? All that stuff. We don't know. We don't know exactly how hands-on he was. Now, Zack Snyder is definitely hit or miss, but the guy definitely has vision.

I mean, he's an amazing filmmaker, it just sometimes misses massively. You know what Zack Snyder needs? Zack Snyder needs a Christopher Nolan looking over his shoulder. And if that mix kind of happens properly, it could be an amazing movie, because... with Zack Snyder kind of making it look amazing and just jaw-dropping visuals, and then you have Christopher Nolan adding all the meat to pretty much the story and characters. It could be great.

So I'm actually really excited about it. I think it could be really good. The thing, I've been very excited about it, and we just had Pete Holmes on the comedy film. Nerd show we did at the Limestone Festival. And one of the things that he brought up, which is, you know, he doesn't, he's always hated Kryptonite.

He's always thinking it's a bullshit plot device, you know, that Superman, everything's going great, no one can beat him, and then. It's the only plot device for a Superman movie. So, he's actually, you know, he's heard that they're not using it in this film. And I think that, to me, is really interesting. Now, I actually don't have the aversion to Kryptonite that the other people seem to have.

And the reason I like it is because that you know, like when you have somebody that's that invulnerable, you know, it's kind of like that yin and yang. Everything's got a weakness. It doesn't matter how strong or powerful it is. But the point that I agree with Pete is it's just done in such a ham-handed way. It was like, all right, here's kryptonite.

Now you have to stop. If kryptonite was used in a more creative or interesting fashion, like in the comic books, sometimes you would see different colored kryptonite that have different Which they've never. Really done in the live action, the cartoons. They grabbed it a little bit in one of the Superman movies when he's sitting in the bar flicking. Superman 3.

I think it was Superman 3, yeah. That was just the one they made wrong. Richard Pryor added tar to it, if I remember correctly. Yeah, yeah, they touched on it, but it was like, but that's the kind of way where you could make it a little more interesting, the whole kryptonite thing. Or is it, maybe it makes him sick or something like that, that now there has to be, or makes him weaker or whatever, so.

So I'm not, I'm on board with whatever. I'm like, I'm keeping an open mind. If they did use kryptonite in a different way, I'd be on board with it. If there's no kryptonite in the movie, I don't care. I'm just, I want to see the movie.

Zod made it. I mean, now it's interesting with, with their casting on that one. I think it's great casting. We need to get him on the show. Yeah.

And I hope, I hope they, uh, I hope they make him a little more sympathetic too, because even in the comic books, you know, Zod was like, he was a general and, uh, You know, he just, he turned bad. But, you know, there is a whole backstory back there where he was looking out for the people of Krypton. Yeah, I think he's perfect casting for that if anybody saw The Iceman. Oh, he's so great. He's so great in The Iceman.

And I left The Iceman wishing that The Iceman got away with it. And I was like, oh, his family must feel. Terrible watching this movie. And they walked away from him. And clearly this was a good-souled person.

And then I did a little research. I was like, no, he was a cold-blooded, terrible... He's the world's most terrible human being. But Michael Shannon did just imbue him with this real soulfulness that made you. Which is why he's a good actor and why I think his Zod is going to be really interesting.

And I think it is going to bring in something. The only shot of him is just him yelling. That's all we've seen so far. But I think Michael Shannon's acting ability is. Going to bring the Zod that you're talking about in the comics with the big backstory that has some sympathy to it.

Which I find so interesting and I think that always makes the best villains. is when there's a part of you that just goes, or they're just terrifying. Right. Like Bane is just scary. You have no sympathy for him. Well, even then, you kind of do because, oh God, he was thrown into this pit.

He has a horrible backstory. He does have a horrible backstory. You see how he was created and that he has the League of Shadows. I think this movie hinges on the Zod performance because I think, like we said, you don't, There's not that much you can do with Superman. I mean, you have to, which is why I thought it was weird they give it to Zack Snyder because he's such a squeaky clean.

Superhero that it's hard to do. I think that's still kind of a cliche because with Hollywood, I mean, there is a lot you can do with Superman. It hasn't been done. It's really, there's, you know, years and years of really interesting movies and, not movies, but comics and stories. Too good.

Like when you look at... you know, all of the other villains, like Brainiac. Why haven't we seen Brainiac yet? Who, like, literally. Do you remember the depiction of Superman in the Dark Knight graphic novel? You know what I mean?

Who was sort of Reagan's lapdog. Yes. You know what I mean? That would be interesting. Wasn't that great?

And he fought Batman and he was so, like. He was the Boy Scout. He really was. He was the Boy Scout and he was like, oh, Bruce, you're crazy. Holy war.

Like, you're the reason they outlawed us. You know, like, his sort of anger towards. Bruce Wayne's fanaticism like what an interesting character that. Would be yeah there's so much you could do and by the way that's when they released the animated versions of those Dark Knight Returns the part one and part two they're really good most. Of the animated series yeah the Red Hood I mean that was all really good yeah.

The next big one, I guess, well, Monsters University. They're going to make a ton of money regardless, so who cares? I mean, you can't... They're going to do what they do. But it's a question of do they deserve to?

And the answer is, if it's good, yes. The first one was fun. I mean, it's not the. Best thing they'd ever done, but it's definitely above just about every other kids' movie out there because it was Pixar. Right.

Pixar, I. Until Cars 2, I said they could do no wrong. Even A Bug's Life, great. It was great. But Cars 2 really...

They were phony. Wait till Planes 1, 2, and 3. We've got to get that trilogy out there. So, yeah, we'll see. I mean, you know, this feels like a money grab, but I liked.

Monsters, Inc. It's fun. Let's see. We'll see. Yeah.

I think, and the other thing is you've got to remember with Pixar, no one could keep that streak going forever. Yeah. I mean, the fact that they did so many amazing movies over and over and over again with none of them that were mediocre, it's pretty remarkable. I think it's because they were sort of flying under the radar. Like, it took so many before people started putting that pressure on them.

Like, People would just see them, and they would like them, but it's. Still, like, in the beginning, they weren't making tons of money. Like, it seemed like it was. Video before, like, yeah, like, Toy Story made all its money on video, way after the fact, you know? It's like, they weren't cashing in until, and then at that point, there was so much pressure that, yeah, it's like, something's gotta give, so.

Next would be World War Z. Yeah, I'm a little worried about this one. Yeah, jury's out on that one, I don't know. I. I maintain that this is going to be a good movie.

And I realize now I'm going way out on an island. I have hope for it. Four more people are like, they're like falling by the wayside. Like, no, Graham, this is going to blow. And all the.

Stories of the reshoots and the three different endings and all that stuff. I think, and I know I am swinging for the fences with this one. It is going to be one of those rare instances that all the chaos of it It ends up going to be a good movie. Why do I say this? Because Brad Pitt doesn't make shitty films.

He makes movies that might miss the mark or whatever. But Brad Pitt is so involved in his career. And because he's one of those, he's on the short list of A-list actors. He can come in and say, I want this, this, and this. And he's always doing it.

Wasn't his production company put this together too? It's not his ego. It's not this other stuff. He's like, I want to make a good film. And he knows how to do that.

He's been doing it for 15, 20 years. Now, I will predict, regardless of whether the movie is amazing or unbelievably awful, huge opening weekend. It doesn't matter. It's zombies. I mean, at this point, anything zombies.

I think I'll say this. I doubt if it is going to be awful. I think there's going to be some cool shit in there that everyone's. Going to like. They're putting that on the poster.

It won't be awful. A must-see. You won't ask for your money back. I think there's going to be some scenes that are just going to be breathtaking. And I think that you're going to.

I think it's going to be one of the cooler visions of a zombie film because we've always seen. it in it's just this town or this street and how they do it which is sure that's compelling this is. One of the first ones where you see the whole world. I asked them when I saw The Purge I always ask where's the rest what the fuck's going on in the rest of the world even The Walking Dead which is a series I really like I always go just America where's the rest of the world what the fuck is going on in the rest of the world you know any of them so this one is going to show us what the rest of the world is doing and how different cultures and governments are going to react to this and I think that is going to be the part that makes you go holy shit in addition to uh.

I like frenetic crazy zombies. You know? I think that's cool. I'm worried more about the CG. I'm kind of iffy on the scenes that I've seen.

I think there's so much potential for that story. And I do want to see that scope and like the vision of it. I'm worried about it. And if you just take it scene by scene, the scenes are amazing. I mean, everything from the traffic scenes to even the scene on the plane, it's terrifying.

And it's amazing. So we'll just see how it comes together as a movie. Yeah. I just don't want it to. Go down that road that, what's the Will Smith one?

I really love the whole opening in that. And it just gets bogged down by the bad CG zombies. Whoever said we should. Do CG zombies should hopefully got fired. I hope so.

And they tried to give this couple CG zombies personalities. And that was like, dumb. I think where this one, and I could be wrong, what I've only seen thus far is that they are like a hive. So that, to me, if we're just seeing them in this giant chaos, like massive lunatics running at you, I think that's where you'll go, oh, God, this is believable. And there's no other way to do that.

So, I mean, I'd give them, you know, there's no other way to make that happen. But it still worries me. Like, that's the part I think that worries me most is the CG. Yeah. Yeah.

What is next? The Heat? The Heat. The Heat? That's the Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy vehicle.

They're both really entertaining and seem like great people. It could be okay. It could be one of these movies, and studios will do this, especially with comedies. When there's a smart comedy, they will cut a dumb trailer. To bring in.

The dumb masses of people. You can cut a smart trailer. That will get huge numbers of people. Like, assuming everyone's an idiot, I think is a mistake. It's made over and over again.

It's made over and over again. Because, again, I think Paul Feig is a very good director. Melissa McCarthy is fucking hilarious. Sandra Bullock in the right movie can do it. But assuming that everyone's an idiot and you have a cable news network.

You're doing okay. Well, I think we were just talking about Bridesmaids. I saw that and Hangover 2 together. We were talking about double features. And Bridesmaids was billed as dumb.

All you saw... And it wasn't. It was a smart movie. The trailer looks really dumb. You had people in the theater that were kind of like, wait, this is a drama.

Some of the parts of it. And it was a, you know, it was... there was a lot of thinking going on in that film. Whereas the hangover, not hangover two, not so much. Uh, but it was, yeah, the trailer. Was like, Oh, the girl shits her pants or whatever.

And it was like, that's such a small part of that. Yeah. Well, the good news is they didn't waste all the good jokes in the trailer. So, right. It wasn't a great trailer.

Um, is that a Nickelodeon or what? You guys know you have a carousel downstairs? I'm going to go right in. I don't know what you're talking about. Yeah.

Uh if we want to stray away from really dumb wide release movies i do really want to see a band. Called death is gonna hit limited oh it's great uh we have a review on this site um dean haglin. It's online but i'm like if it hits here in the theater i kind of might wait it's only about a month yeah it looks really awesome um okay i'll jump to the next really big one lone ranger. We just talked to one of the guys that worked on it. Yeah.

What was his take? Well, he was the grip, so he... He knows the real story. Yeah, he actually thought that the scenes he worked on, he thought it looked kind of cool, like parts of the Caribbean... with a train yeah. Because they built like a these giant sets.

A real working yeah i think it looks ridiculously horrible that's my take on. It it's funny like cowboys and aliens i went this is going to be dumb fun lone ranger looks just. Yeah just dumb without the fun well and i remember when they first announced it we said this on the show we were just like. Who are they appealing to like. Because he's usually aiming those for almost like a kid market.

I'm like, what kid knows what. The Lone Ranger is? Or cares. And cares. Like, what kid is into cowboys at this point?

Like, there's so many other ways you could go and, like, latch on to that audience. But cowboys, I mean. Because that TV series in the 50s was huge. Kids went crazy. It's a different generation.

And Johnny Depp's the Lone Ranger, right? No. He thinks he's an Indian. He wants to be Tonto. You don't argue with Johnny.

Yeah, right. He's a comedian. Well, he thinks he's a lot of things. The thing I wonder about it, though, is do you think Tim Burton gets jealous when Johnny puts on the makeup and funny costumes and when he does it for that other guy? Somebody else.

Because he's done it for five movies with him now. He's rivaling the Tim Burton thing. He's moving up there. Gore's taking him away. Do you think they have, like, a.

Little jealous, you know, love or something? A little love triangle there. But I wanted to make a movie with. You, Johnny. Johnny Depp had an open relationship.

Thank you. I think it has to do with Johnny Depp's deal with the Disney studio. It's funny that he's got another one that he's sort of racking up. And he's always a weirdo in his movies, too. Why else would you?

The most normal you can make him is when he's a lizard. That's the closest to a real character he's played. Well, you know, for so long he played the I'm not going to be the big budget actor. And now he's... He's Will Smith.

I'm getting old. I'm catching on. He's Will Smith. He's the, you know, 100 million or nothing is what I want from this movie. I remember them saying that they had to fight to get him into Pirates of the Caribbean.

I was like, oh, everyone wants Johnny Depp. Yeah. He's like, I've got this house to pay for in France. So rack him up. Vineyard.

What else? Pacific Rim. Do we want to jump that far ahead? kind of that same thing I don't know this is another one where it looks like you know what would be kind of cool if it's like an old school type Godzilla movie which Guillermo del Toro might do he knows how to do that stuff or it could be just like you know Transformers it looks a. Little Transformers-y to me Transformers meets Battleship. But I have such faith in him I like him but he's you know he's a really good and smart director so I don't know again giving him the benefit of the doubt here.

Yeah it might be that same thing like When you get a smart director that makes a smart, big-budget action film, the studio. Then cuts together a dumb trailer. Yeah, yeah. My only worry is how much, again, because now the budgets are so huge on his movies, how much the studio gets involved. If you let him make his movie, he makes amazing movies.

But if they start controlling everything because he's got this hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, yeah, it could mess it up. I'm concerned on that, I suppose. So is the Calliope movie. Have you seen the ads for R.I.P.D.? That looks dumb.

Oh, my God, yeah. Well, I just watched it today. It's Men in Black. I was like, it's Men in Black with the undead instead of aliens. Like, almost exactly.

Men in Black, but dumber. You've got the young guy and the old grizzled cop, only he's a cowboy now, and I'm just like, it's exactly the same. You really need a movie like that with the R.I.P.D. during a summer to kind of be like the control group for good or bad movies. Because then you go, okay, well, it wasn't as bad as R.I.P.D. And then Black 2 was worse, so we got that going for us.

So you look at it like that. There's never been a summer season where some huge budget horrible movie hasn't come out. I mean, you're always going to have a Green Lantern. You're always going to have one. And it's like, oh, okay, well, it's almost calculated and weird.

All right, well, this is our big budget movie that we all think is going to do great, but we know is going to tank and no one's going to like. That's this one. Although. Wasn't After Earth already that movie? Not as huge of a budget.

These were even bigger. Or weren't they the same movie? I can't decide. So it's going to be either Lone Ranger or R.I.P.D. is going to be the worst movie this summer. One of those two.

With After Earth in the three position. Right. I thought about going to see it for summer movies, and I went... I just don't want to see it. I couldn't bring myself to do it either.

Yeah, and that's what I came to. I was like, I just don't go to a summer movie because it's a summer movie. If it looks good, maybe. But I'm like, that one just looks like a bad movie. Yeah, and I'm kind of a completionist.

I think I've seen all the M. Night Shyamalan. And they're usually delightful to just not laugh at him, but totally laugh at him. And this one just seems tedious. It's not an M.

Night Shyamalan movie. I mean, it's a Will Smith film. It's as much as his last. One wasn't an M. Night Shyamalan.

Will Smith just gave him some work, because after. The Happening, he's not been. Well, and then Avatar. What was that? Last Airbender.

That, again, didn't seem like one of his movies. Yeah, but it made a lot of money, though, because it was a kid's movie, pretty much. My kids. It's the first film that they've ever... They're nine and seven now, but it was the first film they ever said, this is boring.

Something that was made for them. And they liked the Airbender stuff. They'd watched all the cartoons. And they're like, this is boring. About halfway through.

And they got up and just did something else. I'm like, okay. That's bad. I don't need to know anything else. Daddy, put Blade Runner back on.

I watched the trailer today for Red 2. Is it just the new Expendables other version? Yeah, it really feels like that now. You know, Red 1 was kind of fun, but again, it was a one joke kind of thing. Do we need to see another one?

And the answer is no. I mean, it looks like there's funny moments in it, but again, and it's also Switch directors, I noticed, because that's kind of what I like. That's the best thing about the Red The first one was the fact that it kept that graphic novel style. It really did not, you know, when it would go to the postcards, it would go to the little animated sequences in between cities. Yeah, I don't know.

It was at least kind of fun. One of those sequels that's completely unnecessary. Cashing in. Have you seen the thing? Our show's going to start in about 10.

15 minutes. Okay, we can wrap it up then. Yeah. I guess, yeah, that is enough for now. We'll invite you guys to come back on.
