Normally, I'll pick something that I've seen and we'll throw that out as a threat. This time, since we're on a very specific topic for the regular Movie of the Week episode this week, I thought we'd start off with a different conversation. And I would ask, which trailers you both got going into this week's movie, but I already know what one of you got. So before I get in, I think I've maybe given my thoughts on the whole franchise, but what are your thoughts on the scary movie trilogy that then became, what, six now, seven? There are almost as many as Scream, so I don't even remember how many there are.
Oh, man. Seeing that trailer, I was like, that doesn't look funny at all. See, that's what I thought. I did not get a trailer for Scary Movie. See, they did the new Scary Movie, which I did know they were making another one.
But yeah, the fact that they either planned accordingly or just hurried the hell up and got it ready so that they could have put it before Scream. I was like, yeah, I mean, that's good marketing. I'll give them that. But I've never. Maybe it's because I like Scream. but not not just it's just that style of comedy I'm using air quotes there that I'm like if you go back far enough it was cool and then you guys killed it so it's like airplanes I'm good with yeah top secret was a good run even moving into naked gun by the first one I don't know I barely remember the sequels but I remember them being funny at the time the TV show originally was pretty funny so like that style of humor can work but by the time we got to disaster movie and epic movie and date movie and all the other knockoff of knockoffs that came around, I was just like, I, you.
Know, not another, not another teen movie. That was good. That's a different group of people that made that one. And they were legitimately making a funny movie. Like they did find all of the cheesy things about teen movies that were abundant at that time.
And like, they kind of nailed the way to make fun of it. So that one, I will give you that one is good. So yeah, I don't rule it out overall, but then I also. I. Don't find the two younger Wayne's brothers funny.
No. While I think the older two are hilarious. Like, again, maybe it's just bias because most of their work is from a long time ago, and I don't really see either of them doing things. Damon shows up every once in a while now, but mostly just to hang out with his kid. But yeah, I don't really see anything out of the older two.
All I get is the younger two, and I just, they're not. They're not that funny. That's just me. Yeah. I think the first one came out when I was probably like 10.
And so it hit then. Grossly inappropriate for a 10 year old, but you were still watching. I think I saw maybe half of the first one and thought this is dumb. Yeah. I haven't watched most of them.
And I like dumb things. I've seen a lot of the clips online now. Like I've seen the Chris Elliott stuff because like people think that's hilarious. And I'm like, eh, I get it. I mean, Chris Elliott's funny in his own ridiculous way.
But again, it just seems like you sandwiched Chris Elliott into this movie because he's doing his weird thing that he does in everything he's in. But yeah, I've seen bits and pieces of it. I might have tried to watch the first one, but I'm definitely not bothered with any of the sequels. And I'm just like, they're just so dumb. And they're going...
I'm fine with gross, but they're going gross for the sake of gross at some point. And I'm like, I don't care. It's not amusing at all. I'm not shocked by it, but I also don't find it funny, so what are we doing here? I don't have a huge problem with gross-out humor, as long as it's actually funny.
There's some cleverness to it, but if it's, oh, look, the guy's just puking all over it. Every once in a while I'll get something that I am surprised when it's something really lowbrow that I'm like, no, all right, that's funny. That just hits and it works. But there's a lot of other stuff that I'm like, yeah, I see what you're doing. I just don't find it funny.
Yeah, they were like throwing dildos around and stuff. Yeah. Which again in the trailer in that could be funny on paper that could be funny but again just seeing. It in the movie i'm like oh that looks like you're trying real hard yeah and it's not gonna land for me but that's or they're not trying hard enough maybe that's just me i yeah it's like i've seen some stuff that goes down pretty gross roads and sometimes i'm like you know surprisingly this is pretty well written and it's funny but scary movies never hit that way for me and Enough that I've avoided it for the most part. So just wondered what your thoughts were.
Pierce, on the other hand, was like, I want to see that. And I was like, you can go by yourself. Does he normally like those kind of comedies? Yeah, I mean, I'd say his humor. He has a good sense of humor, but he appreciates those things more than I do.
As much as I. Love and appreciate Pierce, there's just enough humor. frat boy yeah to to where i could see where he would. Like or dad jokes i can see i can see him he needs to graduate to dad jokes in the future because he's definitely a dad joke kind of a guy just waiting for him. I think maybe it's just like him being easygoing and getting along with everyone yeah also. That's probably a much more polite thing to say about him than what i said but.
It translates into like laughing at things more easily whereas i'm like that's not funny. That's kind of where I am. I think I'm just harsh on comedy in general. It's like, that's why like it's rare that I reference like, oh, I really like this comedy. I think we did an episode where we kind of talked about that.
It's like, wow, this is a modern comedy that I find funny. Like that's unusual because most stuff that they put out that's supposed to be comedies. I'm like, at best, if it's like split genres, I'm usually like, okay, well, this worked for me, but maybe I'm just leaning into the other half of the genre. But yeah, just straight up comedies, it's rare because most of them are just kind of dumb. Yeah.
So yeah, thankfully, I'm not really planning on going to see them. But another trailer was they're bringing back Silence of the Lambs. I didn't get that trailer neither. Did you get any good trailers? I got the trailer for Catch Me If You Can 2, which looked great.
What? Is that actually, or is it just thematically pretty much the same movie, or it's literally a sequel? Well, I don't know. Somehow the first movie totally missed my, like, I'd never heard of it, and I'm sitting there watching the trailer for the second one, and I was like, this actually looks good. Now I have to go find the first one, and it's not streaming on anything that's free.
Well, I haven't heard anything about it, so I. I haven't either. Guarantee that means Spielberg's not making it, because he does have one coming out, and it's not Catch Me If You Can 2. Spielberg, I did get a trailer for a Spielberg movie, but I don't remember. That weird sci-fi one.
That's the thing. People are saying, and I didn't think about this, because I get so used to people being around, but they were like, well, this might be the last big sci-fi blockbuster for Spielberg. And I was like, why? Oh, well, shit, he's probably 70, isn't he? I didn't do the math, but I'm like, well...
He might make more movies, but it may not be another big blockbuster sci-fi movie like this. So, like, they might be right. When was the last time he directed a movie? He directs them pretty regular. I mean, Fableman's just won, like, an Oscar.
And what else? He did one since then, I feel like. Because I know he's produced a ton. He still works pretty regular for an old dude. But I didn't think he was actually directing anymore.
Yeah, I think he still makes them. And sometimes it's just total misfires that he just shows up for. What's that stupid video game? Oh ready player one oh my. God I was so annoyed by that well and again feels like phoning it in man he just it does not feel like.
Spielberg yeah they can't they can't all be E.T. He's pretty solid though you go back and look I'm like it's rare that he misfires like there's a few that he phones it in on but for the most part even the ones that aren't huge blockbuster hits I'm like but that's a good movie that's a good movie like so yeah so weird that somebody wants to do a sequel to one of his movies that's not him That's weird. Was that the first one, one of his movies? It's one of his, yeah. I didn't know that.
Because it's one of those I didn't see for a long time and kept hearing about it going, I need to watch this. I mean, it's Spielberg, so it is solid. So yeah, I would say definitely watch it. But do I need a sequel? I don't.
And is there anyone involved in it? What is the cast? Yeah, is Leo DiCaprio? Is Tom Hanks back? Oh, they didn't show him in the.
So what? How is this? Basically, it's just another person. So apparently, just going off the trailer, who I'm assuming was the main character of the first movie, wakes up in the hospital and she's like, oh good, it's all over. That's literally what she said.
Oh good, it's all over with. And then Elijah Wood comes walking into her hospital room and says, nope. Is this ready or not? What'd I say? Catch me if you can.
Yeah, Ready or Not. Oh. Because I know that is how this next movie starts in the Ready or Not series. That makes more sense. That's way more likely.
No, Catch Me If You Can I have seen. It is good. It's a quite enjoyable movie. I love Ready or Not. I am excited for the sequel for that one.
And that is the same guy making it. So that's why I actually have hope for it. And I'm assuming that's not Spielberg. Not Spielberg. Okay, all right.
It's Radio Silence. The guys who did Scream 5 and 6. The guys who did the good screams. No offense. Yeah.
We'll get to that. We'll get into that. Next episode that you may or may not listen to. Yeah. So.
Well, anyway, that reminded people Spielberg's getting up there. So go see his new movie if you want to see a new Spielberg movie. The Spielberg trailer, I hate it. Because it kept making this weird clicking noise. Which is, I think, part of the gimmick, I think.
Yeah, that really set off my non-diagnosed neurodivergency. You've got a lot of problems. We know that. They may not have been pinned down, but I, as someone else who's undiagnosed, I diagnose myself with stuff all the time. Sure, same here.
I may not be a doctor, but I do play one on the internet. Yeah. It's a whole different story. Anyway, yeah. So, actually, The Bride, I thought, looks really cool.
Yeah. Did you get The Bride? Yeah. Okay. No.
Do you not? Well, yeah, but you're not cool. I feel like it could go either way, though. Because looking at it, I'm like, it seems like they're doing a super unconventional version, so I like that. But watching that trailer, I'm like, it's on the fence.
It could be awesome or wow, this doesn't land. So I don't know how. I trust Maggie. I feel like I like her choices in acting. So I'm interested to see what she does as a director.
Yeah, same here. But yeah, I feel like it really could go either way. But I like that it's doing an unconventional version. I just don't like what's-his-name. Christian Bale?
Yes, thank you. I mean, in the real world, I'll give you that. On screen, he can be very effective. I don't like it. As a person, I don't know.
I'll give it a chance. I don't know what to do with it. We've talked many times about my love for Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. Yeah. That's why I was like, weird that they're doing this now.
But I mean, every couple of years we get another Frankenstein in some way, shape, or form. But the fact that we had such an official... big budget, main director kind of a thing, and then followed up with another ride that's not at all like that one. So I was like, this is interesting timing. If nothing else. The one I'm really interested in is Hocum.
Did you see that one? I saw. Spooky. Because that's, yeah, I mean, it's definitely tapping into the weird folk horror, maybe almost creepypasta-esque in the way it's attempting this. So yeah.
It's the director who did Oddity and Caveat, which are like two of my favorite recent horror movies. And my friend lives in LA and he actually went to an advanced screening of it, but he signed an NDA so he couldn't tell me anything. Other than that, it scared the shit out of him. Damn NDAs. That I'm going to love it.
Yeah. He was like, you need to see this movie as soon as it comes out because it's like made for you. So that one I'm very excited for. It's scary. I don't.
I feel like the trailer didn't show a ton, so I don't even know what all to expect. It just looked like super creepy. So I'm like, all right, we'll see. I got a trailer that I don't, I'm saddened that I don't remember the name of the movie because I was like, I want to see this. But there's two guys driving down a country road.
One guy stops because he has to pee and he gets back to the car and the car is all torn up. Passenger. Thank you. I would like to see that. Yeah, I don't know what that's about.
If you haven't seen the trailer, I guess we shouldn't. Spoilers for the trailer, there's a jump scare. There's a jump scare that I actually felt my heart move in a different direction. And it scared the mom and her... the three teenage girls that she had with her that were right in front of me, they all jumped. I mean, it was like on a TV show, popcorn.
That's what I was going to say. Yeah. The whole theater went, no, I'll go. Yeah. So like, I was like, well, that worked.
Whether or not I was freaked out, everyone else was freaked out. So I was like, all right, I'll give you that. The mom actually turned and said to me, I can't handle stuff like that. And I said, don't worry. It got me too.
You're like, I can't handle talking to people. Stop. Yeah. Don't interact with me, thank you. Yeah, I wonder who's making that one or if it's based on anything.
I haven't heard anything about that. I've heard people mention the name enough that I recognize the name, but yeah, I haven't dug into it because there's too many things. I can't keep up anymore. No. So many projects.
Passenger movie. It's Andre Overdahl. Wasn't he the guy who did The Autopsy of Jane Doe? Yeah. Oh, that was a good movie.
Which is good, yeah. An odd movie, but a really good movie. Creepy and sort of like slowly creepy like works itself in you're like all right this is unnerving yeah. That movie 10 minutes into it i'm like i'm gonna hate this thing by the time it's over with it by the time it was over with it was like i'm scared. It's such a good movie i don't know why i decided to live in this morgue it's super creepy around here so yeah that'll be fun i guess so many future options that you can give us that are better movies than scary movie.
Which is where originally I was going was don't assign a scary movie. Please don't. I'm fine with horror comedy. So that's my issuing is issue us a scary movie, not specific title, that's a horror comedy that's legitimately good. That's what I think you should assign us when you sign up for the Meltdown Horror Club.
Yeah. And then you'll hear us say awesome things like this. I will start off by saying, remember last Horror Club episode when I went into my wrap-up at the end about what we were going to see next and I said the things that I said? Yeah, I kind of called it. It starts off with a very cliffhanger-esque opening.
So if you know the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about. If not, I won't ruin it for you. They don't explain how? No. But maybe that's for the past.
Turns out that this is just an old gypsy curse that they've somehow put onto a phone app. Okay. And they spend all of about 20 seconds telling you that and then just move right along with the plot. Everybody's got an app. Huh.
But then the more I got into it, I was like, truthfully, I'd say most people would be way more afraid of the premise of this movie than any slasher. You could give them like, would you like to be in the woods with Jason or this? And they would pick Jason every time. So, yeah, it sets up a really interesting game of, OK, now what do you do? Yeah.
So that becomes its own movie. I've said many a time, there's certain movies that are just the, well, here's what I would do that comes up every time you watch it, every time you mention it to somebody else, then you come into that conversation of like, well, what I would do is. So this one doesn't leave you a whole lot of options. So it's an interesting game of you're surprised when they come up with another scenario and you're like, well, it's this, right? Because you don't have any other options. so that's the thing i'm like will i never watch this again i'll probably watch it again will i be continually angered at the same things probably but yeah that's my thing most of the way through i'm still like all right this is cool this is fine i might be questioning this decision but it's all good but eventually i was just like damn it kevin.
So the Silence of the Lambs Buffalo Bills house, you can rent on Airbnb because I thought about doing it for a honeymoon. This is why we like you. And the Stu's house, you can also rent on Airbnb. That's what I was going to say. This is a real thing.
Which is cool. But I can't imagine if actual people were actually murdered there, especially because there's the 90s murders, but then the more recent ones. Yeah. That would actually be an okay thing to do. There's got to be somebody that would be into that.
Yeah. I'm pretty sure can't you um go stay at the lizzie borden. House yeah but that feels like i mean it's a long time. Ago so that makes it okay i guess but yeah it was like five years ago it would probably be an issue for some people but again horror people are hardcore so like some of them get into that so yeah people. But she's talking on the phone with him in five.
Yeah. And she mentions Mark, so I assume. So we all assume it's the same guy. Patrick Dempsey. She just likes Mark.
That's what I think is weird. He's also a cop. Well, we all have a type. Everything. But that was the part that I think is like, okay, I'd say this is lazy writing, but you're the one doing the writing, and you wrote the other...
So... Actually, he didn't write three, at least. I'll give him that. But.... The fact that the whole point of three is like, she's like walled herself off and she's not around people, but she like, finally that's the, the story arc.
That's her character growth. And the third one is she finds a way to get past all of this trauma and like open herself up and be like, okay, so I'm, I'm going to be okay with having a life and being with someone. And this guy's kind of proven himself to me to a, not be a murderer and B seemed to like genuinely be interested in me as a person and So I've allowed myself to be attached to this person. And then that didn't work out. So I immediately hooked up with another dude because it has to be pretty close to the same time period because her daughter's that age.
So that fell apart and you immediately went with another dude named Mark who has kind of the same job. That's all very convenient, Kevin. Well, and I assumed like. Such a nerd. I'm going to blame Kevin for a lot of things.
I just watch that stuff and go, yeah. Sometimes it looks cool depending on the extreme activity you're doing. But for the most part, I go, yeah, that looks like a bad idea. I mean, I'll get on an escalator. Not. an elevator, but an escalator.
You can escape at least. Even then, the ones that go like super high, it's scary. Like, I know it's not going to be him, but I don't like him anyway. So I was not upset that he got dead. Well, but he took a long time.
He was busy being a creep the whole movie. I think like a thing that one of the things that bothered me about this one was like the combination of not having that character development. So the kills just felt kind of mean. Yeah. Yeah.
And the way that they were so gory and stuff, like I was like, oh, that's not really fun because I don't know a lot about them, but I feel bad for them. And especially when it's like, I won't get into who the ghost face is yet, but they're both adults, middle-aged adults, just like killing a bunch of 16 and 17 year olds in like really gory ways. And one's really a questionable decision. Yay. We'll get to that later too.
But if you gave me a spinoff movie with just these two, I'm on board. Yeah. Like, give me, I don't care if they're even dealing with Ghostface. Go do paranormal investigations and go find some other, go find ghosts and stuff. They could be looking for buried treasure.
I would watch the hell out of that. Like, I love their dynamic. I really like the two of them. Both of the actors are amazing. You know, at first I was like, okay.
You know, I didn't know how, because we've talked about it before. And I always kind of thought the theory was kind of, I mean, a TV landed on his head. You know, but then when he shows up. And a 90s TV, not a now TV. Now TV, you'd be like, ow, quit it.
90s TV will crush your skull. But when he showed up, I was like, okay, let's see how this goes. But what would happen is every time they'd have him, they'd build him up. It's okay, what's he going to do now? And they totally changed the subject.
He'd disappear for half an hour. Yeah i was happy to see him yeah that was my real world is like man i love matthew willard yes bring him on so like her saying that when like she spent definitely those first three movies of like i don't want to talk about it i don't want to deal with it i don't want eventually she wrote the book but you'd also like by the fourth one she was kind of like but now it's in the book i'm done and she's since spent the last two movies so it seems trying to get away from all that so like it it seems out of character for her to be like, hey, check out all my product out there. You know, like that's a weird move for Sydney to make when she spent her whole life being like, I hate those stupid stab movies.
I don't like people talking about me. So it's like the fact that she told her daughter, yeah, just go read that nonsense on the internet and see what you think about me. I'm like, that's a weird comment for her to make. Well, first of all, she's already trying to sneak out. And I'm just like, then it cuts to him like talking on the phone.
I'm like, okay, if I were you, first of all, being who you're married to, being a cop, and knowing the circumstances that are going on in the last day, my daughter would not be out of my sight. Yes. Let alone... She wandered off, she took off out of the house, and then you're just like yelling her name, don't know where she is. And I'm like, especially in a house that has a big open hole in the front of it, so it seems.
They're doing that half-ass remodel where you make the garage a room, which is always a bad idea. Yeah. And like the heat and air never works in that room, and the insulation sucks, and you've got a garage door in the front of it usually. What was all the plastic protecting in the garage? Yeah.
So that ghosts can show up on the other side. Oh, no, wait, that's the last movie we watched. Home Renovation 101. Put up plastic so that spooky things can be on the other side. It just seemed like it'd make it harder for the construction crew to get around in the garage.
I mean, it really is the same question I asked the last movie. What is this doing? Why is there plastic hanging up? Maybe that was the job. Maybe Joel McHale was like, you know what?
I could use some plastic sheeting in this garage. Yeah. Doesn't look creepy enough. Could you guys put up some plastic? Protect that plywood.
Exposed to boards by the third one it becomes here's a bunch of red herrings where it's just scooby-doo style it's like here's three to four people it probably could be they all have good reasons it could be them if we wanted to go down that road and then it's like they just pull it out of a. Hat that's ptsd baby yeah you would think. I feel like we dropped all of them yeah it's not really any reason like cgi is a thing and deep fakes people do that stuff right but i'm like but what's your what's the comment like normally there's a commentary of some sort going on yeah i don't feel and again this is the same guy who came up with the commentary the first time around and over the years so like why now is it just like yeah murdering.
People and stuff i don't know like I think they tried to kind of make it about Sydney and final girls and traumatizing your daughter enough that now she'll be the new final girl. And, but again, it didn't hit. Like her friends would say like movies about her. Why would you, why would you not know about it? But like, it's weird for Sydney to say that.
Yeah. Just from a character standpoint, which again, you came up with the character, Kevin, what are you doing? Every day could be your last, so you better make the best of it. Well, what a lesson. Isn't it, though?
Isn't that deep, y'all? Yeah. No, no. Go to MovieMeltdown.com, click on the button right there on the right-hand side, and you can join the club and give us a better movie than Scary Movie, which is a pretty low bar, so come on, man.
