Hey, I'm Samantha Mathis and you're listening to Movie Meltdown. The following feature has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. It's showtime, folks. Enjoy the show.
Our nuclear reactor, pumping out one million kilowatts of power. Hey, hey, we're testing it here. I know, I'm in your class. I remember you. Where you been?
Bathroom. Six weeks? My zipper got stuck. What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian, and with me this week we have quite an assortment.
First of all, Ben is back. Hi, guys. Ben, you almost pulled a Roger, and you have to be a really long-time listener to get that reference. But Ben was on regularly for a long time, and then we didn't know where you went. It wasn't even like, damn it, Ben, don't come back.
You were just gone one day. The way I remember it is I was at Yeti Spaghetti 2012. Uh-huh. I went to use the bathroom, and I just now came out of the bathroom. Huh.
So, yeah, I'm ready to eat some spaghetti. I'm ready to do it. Let's do it. Yeti Spaghetti 2012. Well, we've done another one since then.
You missed it. What did I miss? We did a whole other Yeti Spaghetti. Oh, okay. So, is it like, it's the same?
No, that movie was even arguably worse. What year is it? Where are we? This is 1998. Oh, okay.
That makes sense. So we're glad to have you back. We don't know where you went. We won't ask any questions. It's very good to be back.
Now, also, this is Anthony. Anthony, you and I closed the video store. We, I think, personally are responsible. Yeah, it was pretty much because of me that that happened, I'd like to think. I've had many people blame me because I've killed a couple of video stores now.
But I'm like, oh, yeah, it's me, not Anthony. 20 years of a changing marketplace. No, no, it's me that killed the video store. I've been told I'm a snake in the grass, but I think. That's kind of true.
I still don't know that we single-handedly or. I don't think we did. But, yeah, that's how we came to be hooked up in this crazy movie world. So I've been wanting to get you to sit down with us as well. I'm happy to be here.
Thanks for having me. And introduce your partner in crime here. Partner in crime, I have Matilda DeAngelis with me. She works with me over at the Y Louisville stores here. And is hardcore movie geek.
She is hardcore about movies, mainly about the costumes and the fashions and the hairs. Yeah. You definitely need to show up for the Oscar night. Oscar meltdown is in your future then. We need more red carpet coverage is what we need.
So, I guess to ease our way into it, let's do geek activities. Has anybody seen anything lately? I have one, and I'm kind of interested to see if anybody else... Has anyone seen the new Terminator? Unfortunately, I haven't made it yet.
I have not seen it. I know it does have James Cameron's special approval, because there's like a whole thing you have to watch before... Like any movie you go to see now, like before the movie starts, it's like this long extended trailer where James Cameron is selling you the new Terminator. It's like, it's really good. It's basically him saying, like, it's not that bad, guys.
Well, that's the deal of. One on my movie. Hey, this movie you're about to watch, it's not that bad. Daenerys Stormborn, I see she changed her hair color. That's the thing.
I sat there the whole time going... man this chick's really good why don't i know who she oh wait i do i just don't know her without the other hair because i really didn't watch game of thrones i think i'm the only person in the world not watching. Oh no you're not alone okay i have not seen that show. I don't have a problem with it i just never got around. It's very alienating and yeah kind of bad i just it's one of those things that's so inclusive it's exclusive I feel like we need to catch up with the rest of planet earth. Brian, at least you were stuck in the bathroom for a couple of years.
That's your, I have an excuse. I was in a bathroom. I just could not find my way out of there. It was, it was awful. It's like summer school all over again.
Exactly. So, um, yeah, that, that's the thing. I have heard a lot of negative things going in. So I went in with really low expectations since then. I have read a pretty horrible review of it as well.
And I'm like, I, I don't, get it i was okay with it like i expected so bad like i went in went i was actually worried like the first 15 minutes or so it's almost trying to recreate that first terminator and i'm like oh this is a bad idea don't don't don't don't reboot that much don't go down that road and then it takes its turn and it like figures out no we're gonna do our own thing and it goes down a totally different path it totally plays with the terminator timeline which by the way is beat to hell at this point yeah is it just me or by that second movie the entire universe should have collapsed upon itself like. I don't even know why the you know salvation just left a bad taste in my mouth i don't know why they named it salvation i skipped that one is the funny part i've seen the other four and now i'm like I guess at some point I'll have to watch Salvation.
It came out, and I was like, Christian Bale, he's on a roll right now. I'll check this out. And it was on my birthday. I went and saw it on my birthday. I was like, this is a terrible birthday present.
Thank you. Good for you. It's my favorite. That's the only reason I'm glad they made that movie, so he could have that rant. Oh, my God.
That's still so funny. I like him a little more for yelling at that guy. Quit walking through his scene, you jackass. Anyways. When you get to feel nostalgic about Terminator 3, as far as, like, that was a good one.
See, that was what I was more worried about. I missed that movie. That was what I was more worried about, because I feel like 3 is just kind of a ripoff of 2, but not so good. Yeah, it was kind of like... Because, I mean, also, I just saw The New Jurassic World, and not to get on that movie, but I feel like.
We can, because I don't think we've really covered it. Well, I mean, there's a lot to talk about. Yes, there is. I mean. But.
No, I was just seeing that, and everyone was talking about, oh, yeah, Jurassic Park 3. Like, that wasn't so bad. But I remember when it came out, everyone was like, this is the worst. Like, this is the dumbest movie. And I think that's how, like, the third Terminator is at this point.
Like, we, the last, I don't know, this last movie looks so awful. We're kind of. Did they spell Genesis wrong? Is that right? Oh, yeah.
Which is another reason I win with my guard up. I was like, oh, they can't even spell Genesis. These guys suck. Again, I kind of like the weird timeline that they take. I kind of like the weird approach that they take.
The huge question for everybody, and I've said it for years, I'm like, why is this robot an old man now? They find a way to make that work. Really? Now I've got to see it. They find a pretty cool way to go about it.
And I was like, I won't ruin it. But I was just like, all right. They do find a reason at one point. And then I'm like, all right, that makes sense. And then later I'm like, all right, this all kind of works out timeline-wise.
So, yeah, again, even though the timeline should have destroyed itself. If you factor in the TV series as well, I'm like, how many times have they looped around on themselves? Like, it should have completely unraveled time and space. That's right. There was a TV series.
Oh, yeah. I totally forgot about that. There must have been just like a giant dry erase board when they're writing up the script for Genesis. Actually, I don't think so. I think they erased it.
Scrap it all. We're starting over. And they went, what's the beginning of the first one? All right, we'll stick with that for about 15 minutes. And from there, we're writing our own shit.
Yeah. That's pretty much what it came down to. Was the same... Did the same guy who directed the last Terminator... do this one as well. No, it wasn't.
Are we talking Salvation? Because that was McG, wasn't it? Yeah, the guy with the dumb neck. No, it was not McG, thankfully. So I didn't, again, visually, I thought it was all right.
It didn't, you know, change my life or anything. But I went in with such low expectations. I was like, oh, this is all right. This is fun. I am okay with it.
And then I guess to wrap it up, the way I heard it described online was It's like the third best Terminator movie. And I'm like, all right. Wait a second. Let's review those numbers. I was like, that sounds like a slam.
But I'm like, well, when two of the three are like game changing science fiction. One is terrible. And I guess this one. Which one are you saying? I thought you were talking at the beginning.
I was like, whoa, whoa. One is not terrible Oh. Wait no okay so there's five Including this one So it's the. Third best Okay You could do worse, technically. You could literally do one worse.
One and two are tied, you know? It's like, they're so amazing what they did at that time. Like, the first one's just so original in the way it treats everything, and Every movie since then started stealing stuff from it. Plus you got young Bill Paxton. Yeah.
Oh, yeah. We kind of get that scene. You'll have to go see it. I was hoping. Is it old Bill Paxton?
I was like, did they get Bill Paxton's son to do it? Because that would be pretty funny. I haven't checked the credits, but that would have been pretty clever, actually. Awesome. Yeah.
So I don't know. I was like, the second one, technology kicked in and it became a whole new thing. And then from there, I'm like, this one's all right. You can watch three. Maybe skip Salvation.
This one's the third best one. Well, if you wanted to factor in each episode of the show. Yeah, that's true. I didn't see much. I didn't hate it.
Again, it was kind of like, oh, this is fun. I like River being a Terminator. This is fun. So, yeah, I don't know. I'll have to watch the season one of that and factor those in as well, I guess.
And now I'll make it and watch Genesis again. If it's a third, best out of five. I'd like to hear your take on it. I'm sure everyone else out there will bitch about it. But I'm like, eh, it was fun.
What do I care? Did anyone see Fury Road? I feel like you all probably talked about it already. It was one we were going to do a whole episode on it, and it fell apart because half the people can't get themselves to a location. So we haven't really talked about it very much.
We lightly grazed it. A few weeks back. I thought it was fantastic. I saw it twice. I saw it.
Don't go see movies twice. I saw it. I saw it four times. You saw it four times? I saw it four times, guys.
You guys have problems. I feel like the last time I saw a movie four times was like, you know, like 90s Disney era when, I don't know, like Toy Story or something. Your parents were just trying to get you out of the house. I mean, it almost had like the fantastical villains like a Disney movie. Like there are many bosses leading up to.
I feel like every bad guy in this movie, like all the bad guys could have been like, bosses in Streets of Rage for Sega Genesis. There's a power-up at some point. Metal slug coming through. Even the guitar guy, he looked like... I'm getting so nerdy with this reference, but in Streets of Rage, one of the villains is this dude in red pajamas and stockings who juggles fire.
I mean, it's like a dead ringer for the guitar guy. But I thought it was amazing. Just... Yeah, it just, everything was just, they pulled everything off the action. They didn't overdo, like, I liked that it wasn't, like, heavy with, like, dialogue or, like, exposition or anything.
It was just, everything was told totally on, like, on the fly. Yeah, it just felt like just, like, a really awesome, just, like, a great album. Like, I just wanted to, like, go back and, like, watch over and over. Because it's two, it was, like, two hours, but it felt... It flew by.
It flew by, yeah, yeah, yeah. And. I might have had the opposite effect on that one. Oh, yeah. And I went like that first weekend, but I'd already heard so much about it and so many people just worshipping at the feet of Fury Road that I was just like, I watched it and I was like, all right, that was cool.
I was just not overwhelmed the way I guess everybody else was. So I guess, but I've seen it that one time. So maybe I need to watch it four times. I guess it's not like a, I mean... like a game changer or anything like it doesn't necessarily break new ground as far as like action movies but it's just all of it is so I guess because just action movies have just been so shitty for so long just to see like a real car chase sequence done like that like I like that's what I was impressed with I like a car chase like done that well in at least like 15 years. I mean, the fact that pretty much all that stuff was physically done.
They enhanced a little here and there and tried not to kill people. But for the most part, they flipped and blew up a whole bunch of cars. So I appreciated that old school part of it. But again, I think I just went in expecting it to be more. And then I got there and I went, oh, this is just a kick-ass action movie.
Which is fine. Like, that's all you need out of Mad Max. But. It just doesn't try to do anything. And I think I was a little thrown off because he's not really the main character.
He's good, but she kind of steals the movie from him. Well, they share. When I saw it the second time, I really saw that it was this exchange between Furiosa and Max. Every other sequence, they were helping each other out and saving each other's lives. It was never just one was taken over for the other.
And that was kind of at the heart of the movie. and why I think it had such a residual effect with audiences is because they came out of it and they were like, there were two good guys in that movie and like hundreds of bad guys trying to kill them. I feel like what was interesting, I feel like what was, I mean, a lot of people were like, Oh, the characters aren't that fleshed out. Like, you know, you don't really get a sense of like, you know, Max, cause they're saying like, Oh, he's kind of in service to Furiosa. But I feel like he's, Just as fleshed out as anyone. Like, everyone, I feel like, even the wives, to, like, a certain degree, have their own kind of mini arcs, if, like, you kind of pay attention.
But it's just done through action. Like, it's just little things that you notice. Like, say, because what was, like, one of the girls, like, you know, she's kind of, she's really just angry the whole time, but then she, like, makes that cool, you know. Zebra Kravitz. Yeah, well, that's her's. her thing is cool too because she's just I feel like she's she pulls the most weight I feel like out of all the wives in the end but the one who like meets the cool um uh grandma lady and like has the plants and everything like she has that kind of it's almost like a mini like kind of character like thing and then there's the girl who like kind of becomes friends with the war boy and then It's just little things, and also with Max, I feel like just everything, like his character is kind of expanded upon through kind of his just like...
It sounds cheesy, but it's just kind of action and not words, I guess. I don't know. I mean, it was just. I couldn't pick up on that until I saw it the second and third time. He really did a great job of picking up where Gibson left off with Mad Max, because he's always really kind of soft-spoken and used his... face to tell.
A story and that's one thing I did the more I thought about it I was like well he's not you know super in charge of this movie but at the same time I'm like is he really in there I don't remember the first one near as much I need to rewatch that first one but like two and three he's kind of drug along on the story almost as much as this one I mean literally at the beginning of this one but like even like that third one like he's just sort of drug along with those kids out in the desert I'm like it's not really any more like So again, I think I just went in expecting it to be a little different. And really, it's probably not that removed from the last couple of sequels. It's just been 20 years. I think the genius of it, it's really, I mean, people are like, Furiosa, she's the star.
She's the road war in this movie. And I'm like, yeah, that's true. It's like he's the little boomerang kid telling the story. He's the witness in this case. But it's still a Mad Max movie.
Visually, everything. I think Mad Max, everyone's like, oh, Mel Gibson, Mel Gibson. I think what made those movies so good, Mel Gibson was fine, but George Miller is what made them awesome. The way he just set up the universe and the world building. Max was just kind of a little cog in the hole.
And that's why this one's so good. That visual style is still there. He needs to make more movies because he's amazing. And not just babe movies. Even just like when he's chained to the war boy, uh, Nicholas Holt's character and that whole action sequence when they're fighting over, like getting the gun with Furiosa, right.
When they run into her, like the camera just moves with these actors. And so he's got an awareness of how to keep all the action on frame, like, and just move with all these characters and, tell a story while you're doing it and just make it riveting like you can't look away and you don't know what's going to happen next. Yeah I saw some video online that was really interesting it was kind of like a behind the scenes of how he how George Miller shot basically the whole film and they used that scene as an example of how he just basically like the reason everyone's like oh why was it like the action was so easy to follow you could tell what was going on and everything it's because he just basically centered everything like any point of focus any character like that's in the middle of the action, whereas another movie might have them in the corner of the frame, and there's an explosion filling up most of the frame, but you can't see what's...
You don't know where... The character's location just shifts in every cut in the frame, so you can't... It's hard to track where they are, so you kind of lose them. But so you... He cut it in a way he centers the characters.
In the middle of a fight, everything is centered. The characters never leave center frame, even during a cut, and it shows them from a... another viewpoint they're still in the center of the frame so you never lose where they are so all they did was basically they showed that whole fight scene but they just put like a little crosshair so you could like kind of pinpoint where and like if you watch like Max does not leave or Furiosa they do not leave the center of the frame no matter how crazy the cuts get. The cuts are very fast, but you still see what's happening because they never leave that center point. It's really interesting. It makes sense when you think about it, but it's just so simple, but it's just so logical on how to shoot action.
If only we could teach that to Michael Bay. Yeah, I don't think he cares. A man who cannot shoot an action scene. And all of his movies are made up of nothing but action. I think what's going on in his mind is not like, are they following the action?
It's like, what color is the next Lamborghini, I guess, going to be? Zero bucks given for Michael Bay. Pretty much. Good evening. It's intermission time.

All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show. J-R. B-Day, boy. All right, well, I guess we can head into the topics of the week here.
And it had, again, another thing had been a really long time since we've had on was, what's the buzz? And being the weekend that it is, a lot of weird news and stuff came out of a certain city. We won't promote them, I suppose. Nobody's ever heard of this Comic-Con thing. But, yeah, I figured we would just kind of take a look at the things that, I'm using air quotes, leaked this weekend.
Which is funny that, I mean, that's one of the things I'm like, all of this is so pre-programmed and planned that I'm like, are the people supposedly shooting this bad thing on their camcorder also on the payroll? Because I feel like... if they wanted that stuff not to show up, they could take care of it. Like, or they would not let 7,000 people in a room with cell phones and be like, shh, don't tell anybody about this. Like, you know people are going to do that. So they either openly know and let people do it or they put somebody in on the inside.
Because I feel like all this stuff is supposed to get out. That's why there is a Comic-Con. So I think it's funny that they still pretend like this leaked so that you can watch it at home and feel excited. But, We're just pawns in their game, man. Yeah.
I like to at least think I'm conscious of it. Some people may not be, but I like to know when I'm getting duped. Yeah. I feel like... I think that's exclusively with like...
I don't know. I feel like it kind of varies, but generally that's the truth. Especially if it's like a franchise thing. Yeah. I feel like they want to hype it up.
They're definitely... setting all that up on purpose. They know what they're doing. Let's give them a terrible quality leak of it, quote-unquote leak, and then when we release the trailer before whatever movie people go and see, and it's the nice quality, they'll enjoy it even more, and then we'll release teasers. Like, okay, we get it. We already know what's going to happen in the movie, and we're going to see it anyway.
We're not that dumb. I think once the movie's shot... and they're going around showing it at conventions and stuff, I feel like they have, honestly, they probably have no problem with it getting leaked. I feel like they think any press is good press in that case, but I'd say if the movie hasn't started shooting and they're still maybe casting in something like a script or an audition tape leaks, something where someone can get sued and production can get shut down or whatever, I feel like that's when they get Are they really trying to cover their ass? Yeah, at this point, I'm sure they don't want the actual movie leaking, which happens a little more than it needs to, and it's kind of killing the industry.
But like the trailers and promo stuff, yeah, I bet none of that they're going to worry about. If it's going viral, they could give a rat's ass how it got that way. Yeah, if they have a problem with it linking online, then why are they even showing it in a giant public setting anyway? Is it really that big of an issue? So I think all that's very deliberate, and I'm fine with that.
As long as we're aware of it, we're there for the same reason. Do we want to start with the big one? I mean, I feel like the world shut down for geeks as Star Wars showed up in one place at one time. Real sets. Practical effects.
You've been here, but you don't know this story. Nothing's changed, really. I mean, everything's changed, but nothing's changed. That's the way you want it to be, really. To see the way that technology has evolved.
And yet keeping one foot in the pre-digital world. It couldn't be more exciting. It's still surreal. We are here on day one. Of Star Wars Episode VII.
Yeah. How incredible is that? Yeah. Eyes welled up. That's, yeah.
Goosebumps. That's what I heard. Goosebumps were everywhere. I touched base with many of our people on this show, and I believe the term tears were used several times. I believe Patrick said all the emotions is what he had.
All of the emotions. It just now sunk in because, I mean, I just now saw that video, but it just now sunk in. I'm like, oh, yeah, C-3PO and R2-D2 are in this movie. I'm just now like, oh, yeah, the characters. They're not going anywhere.
They're not going anywhere. They're doing it for real. That's Peter Mayhew again. Yeah. I mean, the same people in those suits.
That's the one I'm impressed with because when they first started announcing stuff. Warwick Davis. Did they get him in there? Warwick Davis, yes. Warwick Davis is coming back.
He's got to be in there somewhere. Damn, what if they replaced him with Peter Dinklage? That would be a heartbreak. Dinklage don't need that shit. I wonder if somewhere Warwick is shaking his fists like, damn it.
Dinklage is like GQ cover boy at this point. He don't need that nonsense. He's a super stud. He don't need them. He don't need your costumes.
He does not. But there won't be Ewoks, right? Warwick did other things besides Ewok. I don't know. I feel like anything could happen.
The Leprechaun will show up maybe. His other starring role. That'll be a surprise. That would literally be the last thing anyone would expect. Warwick Davis is returning for Star Wars.
He's still looking for his gold. He's coming as his character from Harry Potter. You guys are cool with that, right? It's all geek stuff. It's all the same universe.
Spoiler alert. Come whipping in on a Nimbus 3000. It's all good. So, have that in the middle of a lightsaber battle. That'll be fun.
I just hope that this new one just finally caves in and makes the Christmas special canon because they don't need Lucas's approval, do they? It is canon, I believe. I mean, it's not his anymore. I think it is canon. It is?
It was, I mean, because it kind of has to be. It's the first uh appearance of boba fett you can't rule it out or there's no reason for him to be an empire so he was in the christmas special before empire came out so i think it's canon he doesn't want to re-release it but i think it's canon. Have you guys seen the christmas. Special the I've only been lucky enough to see. The wondrous shit show that.
You can watch online. Some jerk made you watch it on a giant screen on this window behind us right here. That was like the most fun. I mean, I'll be honest. That was our Christmas party one year.
This is bad, but I feel like honestly it's the most excited I've been while watching a Star Wars quote unquote movie. I think you were the only one. Everyone else hated me that evening. Oh, I loved it. I just couldn't believe.
They still curse my name. Does it touch you walk adventures? Oh, it's way worse. It's way worse. It's way more nonsensical.
Ewok has a story. This is just a variety show with Wookiees. Yeah, that's right. It's the whole family. A bizarre Jefferson Starship performance.
A wonderful song from Jefferson Starship. As a hologram. What a. It's basically you just watch characters watch things on other screens. Yeah.
For like two hours. It's like a fever dream. You're just like, oh, cool. I'm going to see like Chewbacca and like, you know, Han Solo. And it's like, no, it's just like they'll start a skit or what it seems like a skit.
And then they'll get like a computer or something. And they're like, let's watch this like computer thing. And it's just like it cuts to like a cartoon or something that like. Princess Leia is watching. It's just weird.
Like every 15 minutes it cuts to another thing and you watch that character watch this thing. It's like Steve Jobs was like trying to like, I don't know, like unveil like the early Mac prototypes somehow. I don't know. It might be part of it. It was just ill.
Everybody had little iPads that they were watching stuff on. And then they just make up this thing where like the Wookiees have this like kind of cults like cultish holiday. It's life day and I celebrate it every year. Life day. It's not Christmas.
It's, I mean. That's special. And they all wear these weird like eyes wide shut. Like red robes. Oh, Wookiee eyes wide shut.
That's so hot. And just the final sequence where they're just all in this ceremony and they're just, it's very solemn. Like they're, it's just, they're, it's the most serious part of the whole special. It's like the only. They're holding like candles and shit.
The only part where you're not watching like a cartoon or like a musical performance. And you're actually seeing, like, all the cast members there. It's, you know, Mark Hamill, Princess Leia. I don't think Harrison Ford. No, Harrison Ford shows up.
It's one of those, I didn't think, I was like, they didn't get him, right? Oh, yeah. They got everyone. He's not happy about it. You can see it.
And he's like, well, I got to go move the Falcon. I'm in the toe zone. I'll be back later. And, like, he disappears for most of it. But he's there.
It's just so stilted and uncomfortable. And I don't know. It's just... I mean, you can see because Lucas, after it was made, he tried everything he could to have it. I don't think he had anything to do with it.
The more I watched it that time, I was like, I think he just signed off and went, all right, it'll promote the movie. Cool. And I think he just handed it over. And some network executive slapped this nonsense together. Because I don't even think it has enough.
I mean, for the longest time, it was harder to get a hold of. It was harder to get a hold of than Song of the South or something. It was just bootleg VHSs for years and years. That's what kept it alive, really. That's the only reason it's out there now.
Some jerk with a VCR before anybody else in the country had a VCR taped it. Some jerk with a VCR. But I loved it so much. It was... Oh, it was so awful.
But Episode 7 will not be anything like that, we're assuming. Based on that footage. We don't know. Never say never. It's going to look a little better based on the footage we just saw.
That's what I think is impressive. As much as I went in a little eerie when they announced it, and as I've said myself, and you just said it a little while ago, it's like the best thing that could have happened was George stepping out of the situation... JJ, I'm okay with for the most part. I'm more interested that he's going to turn around and hand it off again because I'm looking forward to 8 and 9 because that director's awesome. I like that they're doing that, though.
And also, I feel like in JJ's defense, I'm not a huge JJ Abrams fan, at least in the movie-making realm. I like his TV stuff. I feel like that's kind of... That's just where I like his directing more, I guess. But I feel like in some ways this...
It makes sense because he's really good when you think about aping other directors. That's almost all he's done. That's what he loves his career on. Has he done anything that wasn't his movies? Has he done anything that wasn't somebody else's property?
The whole Spielbergian lens flares he does. And Super 8 is totally a Spielberg movie. Mission Impossible, he. Came in on three. Star Trek is obviously someone else's property.
He usually just sort of translates everything. That property for a new audience. He's pretty damn good at it. He is. His movies are accessible.
I feel like he knows. I feel like he's smart about it. He's going to know as a directing presence. He knows that the older movies, when we think about... They're not really like... showing off like this director is you know clearly behind it because you can't really tell.
Except the second one the second one well just the second one just looks like it just looks oh yeah. I mean it's it's lit better yeah it's it's way better but i feel like it's he's not going to be too flashy whether he's not going to try to put like he's going to try to let. The story lens flares out i'll give him a nickel yeah for the love of god. Stop it just stop it I think he will. I feel like he's going to let the story kind of take over.
Well, to me, that's so... Like, again, because he put it so heavy in Star Trek, I'm like, you can't have these be the same universe. Like, you need to separate them, at least with lens flares, not being in this one. And it calmed down a little bit with the second Star Trek. I don't know.
I feel like it was still too much. Maybe. The first one was out of control, but I feel like there was still a good amount. Out of control. It was out of control.
The lens flare. But I think that's the other thing. Now that George is out of the way, he's handed it to new people... And I think it helps like that, you know, JJ is a fan. And at this point it would be hard to find a filmmaker who wasn't influenced by these movies.
But I mean, it is one of those, like he wasn't really a fan of Star Trek and he does a decent job, but like, okay, what if he loved the property? Like, so that's kind of what I'm hoping we get is like, this is his childhood and he really doesn't want to screw that up. So it's like, I'm hoping he puts a little extra care into making sure this is a A solid new start that we can launch 10 million new movies out of. And Hamill looks good. Domhnall Gleeson.
Love Domhnall Gleeson. Oscar Isaacs is on those two. He's in everything now. He's the new go-to. He's great, Oscar Isaacs.
I feel like they cast the new generation. I feel like they had a good eye for, oh, these people are five years from now, they're going to be superstars. They're kind of already getting there. This ought to do it. He already is, but even the kids are kind of like, give it another year.
They'll be huge even without Star Wars. I think because of that, they're going to be the new A-listers going into these things. That's cool. And the practical effects thing. Back to what we said about Fury Road.
It's like the fact that he's not relying on greens. George did nothing but stand. Literally, those last two There are no shots without green screen. There's a little bit in Phantom Menace. There's nothing done, a completely practical shot in those last two movies.
And I'm like, that, to me, you can feel that watching them. And there's just something you don't connect with because of that. He's not doing that. And it's not just that he used green screen, because I feel like there are certain movies that are entirely green screen, like Sin City or something. But it works.
You feel like it's compelling. And it's like the green screen in the prequels, it has this muddy quality to it. I don't know. It just feels flat or something. You get no sense of when someone's supposed to be...
They're doing some kind of political trade-off of something with taxes. I don't know. Something really boring. It's supposed to be in this giant hall, palace, and it just looks like a flat cart. You get no depth.
I don't know. There's no feel to it. And that's something with Sin City. I feel like they... That is so stylized, so comic book universe.
You're supposed to feel like it's a different thing. But the difference... charm i think in those old star wars movies was that they were a real world like as much as it was fantasy and there were weird things that obviously didn't exist in your world for the most part tetween was like just a big dumb desert that you didn't want to be stuck in just like luke like it felt like a real world that had these little fantasy elements but the most of it ran like a regular place that you did kind of you know you could sort of feel at home at where you're not going to get that in something super stylized like sin city so there is a A disconnect there that I think is okay when you're doing something that's supposed to be like that.
But Star Wars, I think, works better if it feels like you're part of that universe. Yeah, and at the same time, it's 2015, and of course you can't have a space opera action movie without CGI. Yeah, and when you use it right, it's fine. It's just not overdone and not badly done. I think when it becomes a problem when there's, like, CGI and humans interacting with one another on screen, because it's like, you know, like, you just know when you're looking at it, like, that's CGI... unless that's not real that's not genuine you know it's like the way they light the actors on the green screen and like the way they're lit and the way like the the fake lighting or whatever the computer lighting of the environment they're in is like it's it looks like it's coming from a totally different source so you're just seeing this like brightly like over like i don't know like these backlit kind of people or something and they're just like popping out like I don't know.
And that's the thing. I won't totally sell green screen down the river because they're getting better. That last Planet of the Apes movie, regardless of whether you like the story or not, those effects were so good. Those completely creating those apes. Were they really?
I feel like the first one was kind of iffy, but that last one, I feel like the special effects. Okay, I didn't see the last one. But I feel like the last one, the special effects have gotten, even in those couple of years between those two, the special effects got so much better. That those characters are real characters. For once, I felt like that.
It's rare that you get that with CG characters. I think they used blue screen with that one. Are they back to that? That was what Lucas started with early. I think they're going back to blue screen now.
I'd read somewhere, but they nailed it with that. All thanks to Willow. Willow. I believe that was our first blue screen, or one of the first ones they put a lot of blue screen work in. Use the wand.
It's all back to Willow. All right, have we covered our Star Wars? Have we welled up enough that we have hope for the future? We're excited. Maddie, what do you think?
Star Wars. Were you big Star Wars before? See, I didn't watch them much as a kid, so to me it doesn't, I don't have the nostalgia. I'm finding that. Like, yeah, I so assume that everybody's so steeped in it.
That's an interesting discussion, too. Is I feel like are the people who are like the most diehard, and you know, I love the Star Wars movies. I don't consider myself like a diehard Star Wars guy. Like, I don't, I could not tell you like the real, like the story, you know, of the original movies. Like, I know the characters, I know Individual scenes, I know like the.
It's not overly complicated, I hear you. But like, you know, when it shows the text at the beginning of the screen, like scrolling up, I could not tell you like what that is all, like I never read that. No idea. But I feel like, I wonder if there's a lot of just, I'm sure this is true, like just a lot, a huge chunk of people who really love Star Wars is because they grew up watching like old VHSs of them. And like seeing a movie like that as a kid, like really kind of blows your mind because when you're a kid, everything you see in a movie is real.
And when there's that much kind of like imagination and sensory overload in a movie and you watch it that early on and it's like live action with like real people, it's not like a cartoon. I feel like that just kind of stays with you. And I feel like, I mean, that's probably why like people are so protective and like really, you know, they are, they're keeping such a close eye because it's like, it's something, you know, watching those old VHS tapes as a little kid, like that, like is ingrained in like their movie souls or something. And, they don't want that to be broken. That is something i wonder because again dealing with new generations since then because that's something i noticed working at the video store like kids would come up with star wars all day long yeah but they didn't care which one like they watched one through three just as much as four through six and some of them liked them better because they're a little more action they're a little more animated literally in my thoughts but They didn't have the problem with it that old guys are just like, that's not Star Wars.
You kids are stupid. Where they're just like, shut up, I like this. So I'm like, they don't know not to like it. It's like we go in so guarded once you're of the generation that grew up on it. Whereas if it's just been there since birth, you're like, it's a movie.
What do I care? So you like what you like. So I wonder going in now, if you take the old people out of the way and you're dealing with the new generations, if they're going to come at it totally different. you know, kind of fresh and be like, well, that's stuff my grandpa liked. I'm going to watch this episode seven and see what I think of it and maybe take it on for its own, you know, whatever this movie is going to be. Even just like the expanded storylines like have exploded in the past 15 years, I feel, you know, especially with like video game technology kind of pushing the stories for characters and introducing new races and technologies to the Star Wars universe.
I'm big on all the expanded stuff too. I love it all. I can't get enough of it. I've read all, probably like 25 books, played video games, done the whole shebang. Except the Star Wars Christmas special.
I haven't seen that one. That's canon. You have to have that one. I don't know how I missed the. Both of them?
There are two, you know. We had them at the movie theater I worked at and nobody would want to watch them except for me. And, you know, I feel like even like, because I watched, I also watched growing up on VHS, the Ewok adventure movies, and I didn't even, I didn't realize how bad they were. Like, I love those as well, like equally. Yeah.
So I feel like that almost like proves how like when you're just, just all that kind of, again, just all that shit, just like in a movie, and you just kind of taking it as just real stuff. that just, that has an effect on you. And you're a kid, you just like what you like. Like, you're not biased by, you know, media. You don't really know, you don't know if you really hate a movie. Like, you don't know how to hate a movie really yet.
You don't yet have. Like, just movies are just this experience that you take in and absorb and it just like, it just, again, yeah, just like, is stuck in your memory like constantly that's why kids like watch like movies like 10 times in a row yeah. And you don't yet have snobby friends to make fun of you when you like something that they think. Yeah you're not good enough you're not cynical like you don't see star wars as like a movie that you know has a person like directing it and not as like you know like the frame or whatever like you don't see it that way and i feel like that's kind of sad once you go back and watch star wars and you kind of see it as like you know you know people acting and not like they're not just characters that, you know, it's just like, oh, that's Harrison Ford reading a script.
What's weird is I just went back and watched Empire again, which I don't know the last time I've watched it. Like, again, I know it so well, I feel like I don't have to. So I actually sat down and watched it again. And I think maybe that kicked in because I felt like I knew every scene so well that it, I don't know, there was like, it didn't have anything else to look forward to. So I think maybe that's why I'm looking forward to these.
Like, I'd like to see something that I don't know every syllable that's coming up in the next scene. It would be kind of neat to see something different for once. There are going to be lines opening night everywhere across the country. It's going to be huge. I guess they're expecting it to be the biggest opening, hopefully, since Avatar, which for some reason that was huge.
Since the last two records we wrote. Yeah, that was over my head. I understand people like, going that first weekend, but after they saw it, I thought, oh, okay, they're not going to go back and see that movie again. My dad saw it like three times. He couldn't get enough of it.
My mom wouldn't even go see it. I was like, Dad, why do you keep going to see this? That's interesting. I noticed that too. I feel like older people really liked Avatar.
It was like a massage... like a spa experience. They didn't care about the story, but they just loved the jungle and the plant. I think they were all high. Yeah, it was just like. This nice relaxing thing.
It was like they took a weekend and went to Hilton Head. It's like a moving Roger Dean album cover, man. I just got paid $ 15 and watched some Blue Aliens. Go for it, Dad. Enjoy.
It's crazy. Alright, next up. Batman v Superman. Today is. A day for truth.
The world needs to know what happened and to know what he stands for. That kind of power is very dangerous. Let the record show that this committee holds him responsible. That's how it starts. The fever.
The rage. That turns good men. Cruel This spat vigilantes like a one-man raid of terror. You don't get to decide what the right thing is. Nobody cares about Clark Kent taking on the Batman.
Do you know the oldest lie in America, Senator? Devils don't come from hell beneath us. They come from the sky. 20 years in Gotham, how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?
He has the power to wipe out the entire human race. And we have to destroy it. Do we want to address... Just why? Why?
Because it makes money. I just. I mean, I'm kind of... I'm done. For one thing, let's take a break with Batman.
And I like Batman, but I'm like, we don't have to make him for the sake of making him, you know? Just like, if you have a good story to tell, tell it. I think it's funny, too, how, because I'm pretty sure when they're, maybe, I mean, I could be wrong. Maybe I'm making this up, but I know when this last Superman movie came out, like, before they were making it, I'm sure they were planning on doing, like, another Superman as a sequel, but when they realized that, like, people don't really like Superman by himself, they're like, we need to spice things up. We gotta put Batman in this or some shit.
What can we do here? So people will go see the sequel. And, I mean, I think it's cool that Ben Affleck, I feel like, you know, I like Ben Affleck. I feel like, I mean, if he's put in the right role, and I feel like he would make a solid, like, kind of alternative character kind of Frank Miller-ish kind of Batman. I mean, he does have the frame.
He's got the jaw. He looks like a cartoon drawing of Batman. I do like that they're going all the way to disassociate from the Christopher Nolan movies, like the vibe. They're really trying to make him be this kind of, you know, his armor looks totally different. You know, his Batcave, you know, Alfred.
It's Jeremy Irons, which. Is very weird. I didn't see that coming either. I didn't either. That took me by surprise.
I don't know what to think about Jesse Eisenberg as a supervillain in a movie. I'm sorry. I can't take that seriously. I mean. We took up issue with his hair.
His hair. What did you say, Maggie? I said he looks like Julia Roberts with that haircut. Yeah. He is no Pretty Woman.
Pretty Woman starring Jesse Eisenberg. I mean, that trailer. I mean, nothing against Jesse Eisenberg. Again, he's just an actor that I feel like just cast him right. And he's good.
He's great in the right stuff. They just like the trailer. If you watch it, it's just like nothing but like explosions and, you know, a building collapsing and like the stakes are high and just, and it cuts to like the bad guy and he's like, hey. Red capes. The devil comes.
Red capes are coming. Is he the bad guy in this one? Or are they just planning ahead two movies? That's what I'm trying to decide. I'm like, is that Lex Luthor before he loses all his hair?
Yeah. I feel like he's clearly wearing a wig. Like, is it not just, I mean, That would be hilarious if they're like, no, that's his real hair in the movie, guys. This is not a joke. He hasn't lost his hair yet.
They made me do this, guys. My hair doesn't normally look like this. It's curly, I swear. When I watched it that first time, and I sat there and was like, when it was done, I was like, is it just me? And actually, it's just confirming what we've said.
We bitched about it for the last year or so. I'm like. is it just me or is there way too much stuff going on in this movie? Like, there's just 14 plot lines going on in the trailer. Like, it's so much stuff. Zack Snyder, like, I feel like he's not really...
He's still, like, I don't know. There's sometimes, because I know a lot of cases, there's a lot of people who are music video directors who go on to be, like, great directors. Like, David Fincher is, like, the most obvious example. But I feel like he's still directing music videos. He doesn't...
He doesn't invest... I don't know, he doesn't seem to put emphasis or that much interest on the story. He still cares about style more than anything else. Most definitely. He just directs long trailers.
That's what he does. The best part about Watchmen was the trailer, in my opinion. The intro, the little opening title sequence is awesome. And then from there, you get into his weird... to me he's just he's got so much agenda of what he thinks is cool and what he likes to focus on and like he will take whatever the property is and kind of cram his personal thing into it. So his heart's in the right place that's what yeah i don't i feel like he really does want to make you know a good movie he's really trying to be respectful to the you know, the mythos or whatever.
I mean, I don't know. I don't think he's... I'm not a comic. Book guy, so maybe he's... I guess he's not, but.
Well, I just feel like he doesn't get the Superman mythos at all. Yeah, I feel like he just wanted to do another, like, loud, kind of visually crazy... And I feel like, you know, he wanted to have, like, he saw what Nolan did with Batman. He's like, oh, I want people to take my superhero movies as seriously as that. I want it to be dark.
Or bring him on as a producer. I'll have, like, weird, like, Terrence Malick-y like shit that doesn't belong and just is out of place. I mean, I will say, because I watched that first Superman movie and I was just like, what the hell? And again, with the mythos, like the Superman could care less about humans. He's just letting people get killed right and left.
He never makes any attempt to move this huge fight knocking down buildings away from the buildings. Like he's constantly just taking out human beings right and left. And then all of a sudden he cares about those like two that he decides to save and kill a guy. But I'm like, OK, all that's ridiculous. It makes no sense in that mythos.
But I'm like, if all of it really like I don't give Zack Snyder this much credit. But if all of that was really build up to get to this, because it seems like that's what the plot line to this new movie is, is like. this guy's a jerk and like he just took out all these people he destroyed our city he's not here to help us if that was really part of the plan i don't think he's that clever but that would be kind of genius like if he made an entire movie that was just to be set up so that he could do this other idea that would be pretty cool if he made it pay off and the second one was going to be impressive I don't think any of this is true. But as theories go, I would give him credit. It still doesn't mean I want to sit there for another two hours and rewatch that movie, but it would be interesting if he made an entire movie just to piss off fans so that he could turn around and do something totally different in that second movie.
Again, I don't... Even just to make the story believable, all you got to do is say, like, to get people to hate Superman, charge them a Superman tax because he breaks everything. Yeah. Who's going to pay for it? Well, I guess we will.
What other option do we have? And he could wipe us out, which he pretty much is doing already. I feel like he probably kills a bunch of people in that first movie. A lot. They even say it in the trailer, he's responsible for all these.
I'm like, geez. He has to be. Watch this. That's what I think is funny in this new trailer is how much I feel like they're again, trying to tie these fantasy worlds into the real world. That scene with Bruce Wayne running into the building collapse, I'm like, that's footage from 9-11.
They're tapping into real world and people really dying. It's weird. It's kind of a weird area for them to be doing a superhero movie and tapping that closely to this event. But again, they know what they're doing. We're going to tie this to a real world thing.
Only, you know, we're going to make it a silly superhero movie. But they wanted to make it realistic. So that scene, to me, is just straight up 9-11 footage that they've turned into a superhero. And that's Snyder trying to be dark, I think. He shows a cadaver and a body bag in the trailer.
For some reason, that was an image that stuck out to me. It was Michael Shannon. I'm assuming that's what it looked like. I was like, did he come back just to be a dead guy? I thought it looked like Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Yeah. No, not Stone Cold. That's his new biopic he's doing. Yeah. Michael Shannon is that good.
He can do that. Stone Cold could beat up Superman. Not even kidding. Somebody needs to. He needs to be stopped.
Batman, I guess we're looking at you. I don't know. There's just so much going on in that trailer. And then they show them, like, fighting. And, you know, it's obvious.
I mean, I feel like why is it... I mean... Superman can kill Batman in like a second if he wanted to. Yeah. But I don't know.
I don't know if it's going to be like, oh, he's holding back because he doesn't really want to kill Batman if that's what it's going to be about. Which is, if that's the case, that's even dumber because I don't care to watch that. Like, that's just a whole movie of Superman just pussyfooting around and like Batman just. Getting all upset. I think in the old incarnations, like in the comics and I think even in the animated shows for a while, they would have them do that.
And Batman is kind of smart. So immediately he's like, oh, I need to go eat some kryptonite. And he would build a suit with kryptonite in it and beat the hell out of Superman. If they're not going to do that, it kind of doesn't make any sense. Like in.
You know, Dark Knight Returns. I went back and re-read Dark Knight Returns after they announced this was happening. I was like, how the fuck did that fight go down? I don't remember. So, like, you know, going back and it's like he's got...
Batman has this super suit that protects him from Superman who's obviously going to throw him through a bunch of skyscrapers. He's got, like, kryptonite all over the place. And, you know, he's smart. He's a tactician. He knows how to fight.
He knows his enemies. That's, like, something that I remember him saying in the comic book. He's like, know your enemies. But that's Frank Miller doing... cool batman comics. Not sex yeah i mean i feel like the only well to me here's the thing here's where i kind of as far as like the comic book universe where i just kind of check out is when it kind of gets into like pitting these super superheroes against each other and like having universes like all you know these universes cross and like people with like very you know unfairly just very unbalanced you know powers are fighting each other like i don't know it's it's i can't buy into like it's like it's like people who like that i feel like are also people who like to play like would you rather games or something i'm just.
Like i don't care like again that That's why I was so turned off by that whole Superman movie. It's just indestructible guys throwing each other through buildings. It doesn't hurt anybody except humans. They're not getting hurt one way or the other. So to pit it against something like Avengers, my favorite people in the Avengers are the humans that have no powers and are like, we're stuck fighting with Thor who's kind of a god but I have a pistol.
You know, I'm like, so I'm like, I'm way more interested in Black Widow because she's a real person. Yeah, I'm happy when a superhero movie like sticks to the superhero and like they don't have cameos of other like comic book characters. Well, then you came to the wrong movie. And that's what I hate about these Marvel movies. Like, I mean, I feel like a lot of the reason I didn't see the new Avengers, but I read some complaints online that I thought made sense.
Like, and what they were arguing was, like, why it didn't, like, they said it was good, it was, you know, well-made, and Joss Whedon did a good job, but the stakes weren't, like, where they should have been at that point. Solely because of the Marvel kind of machine of we got to keep this going, this person can't die, this person can't die. I like the new one, but he, I mean, he just has so much to do in one movie. And to me, I think he balances it pretty good. I hate that checklist that they have, every director who does a Marvel movie has to go, like...
Yeah. Yeah. To me, I feel like as good as you can work around it, sure, I mean, that's true to any big Hollywood franchise. I mean, that's always been the case. But I feel like there's Marvel, there's something super restrictive about how their movies have to be made that just, I don't know, they just don't, I don't know, they don't have really that much impact, I feel like.
Even like, they don't even have, in some ways, like there's so well, a lot of like the Avengers, I liked it. it was so well made and like so well put together, but it had no like flaws or interesting kind of, I feel like, you know, I would have liked it better if it took risks and like had weird flaws and stuff in it. Like, I feel like the flaw with those is always the villain because they spend like, especially when it's the ones that Joss is doing, he spends so much time building our characters and their relationships are so well represented. They just like, Oh, and we have some, we have to fight something at the end, you know? So I mean like, I feel like the, even in this new one, like, Spader's great, but, like, he still takes a backseat to, like, all the other interaction with the characters because that's so much better.
Like, that stuff's way more interesting. So I think even he knows that, and he's like, oh, all right, and then we'll do the big fight scene. But, like, the villain always kind of takes a backseat to our main characters because the relationships are more interesting. I think these movies are just very reflective of just, like, the current generation of content overload and how that's just kind of how, I guess, like, us older, crabby guys, I guess, just, you know... piss and moan about too many people, you know, too many plot lines, too many characters, and just, I feel. Like, Captain America wore a unitard.
Yeah, but I feel like there's just a whole audience that's watching them, and, like, that's just, that's fine, like, that's how they, that's just how movies are, and it's not a problem, so. And that's fine, you know, Marvel knows that people are going to come to these movies, like, and my, I didn't see the newest Avengers, because I was like, I already know that there's going to be two more, like, you know, I want to go when I know that, like, people stand a chance of getting killed off, like major characters, because that's what keeps things interesting in these storylines is like, well, what if Black Widow got the black lung or something? What if we lose her? Don't kill her because she needs a spinoff movie.
Yeah, she's pretty great. I think they're going to kill off Robert Downey Jr. because he's pretty much out after these other movies. Yeah, he's going to clock out. Again, I feel like, I feel like Whedon would have killed people off sooner. I feel like he would have killed one or two characters in that first one.
In fact, he does, and Marvel kind of found the loophole and worked around it. But he would have killed more people, I think, in that first one. But again, he's got to work sort of within their parameters and the planning of 14 other movies. But yeah, if it were just his property, I think he would have taken out a couple people, even in that first movie. And did we get a Harry Dean Stanton cameo?
We should in every movie. Every movie ever should get Harry Dean standing. Except he doesn't want to leave the bar. He's got to hang out at Dantana's. There's only so many cameos he can pull off.
Bring a mobile green screen in the bar. Just like he'll be sitting down. On a stool. Maybe he'll be in the new one and Superman will go blasting through the building and kill a bunch of other people. But Harry Dean will still be sitting at the bar just drinking and ignoring them all.
I'd be up for that. If he has to be in that weird movie. That would be a great guest to have on. Oh yeah, that would be awesome. I saw him.
I was very near him. Did you high five him? Nah, I might have. Knocked him down. I don't know if he'd be into high five.
I don't know if he could get it up that tough. He's an old dude, man. He was hanging in there. He's this hell of a trooper. So yeah, I don't know.
That's my take on that trailer is there's, in the Batman V Superman, there's way too much going on. Like what, how do you even work Wonder Woman into that? Like, There's already too much story with Batman and Superman. How do you also work Wonder Woman in? They're already working in Aquaman at some point.
I'm like... Oh, wait. That's going to happen? Oh, yeah. They already cast...
What's his name? Wait, who? Have you not seen those pictures? Aquaman. Oh, yeah.
Who can speak to fish? Maybe for like a boomerang cartoon. I know. To me, that's of all the people for them to focus on. The picture's ridiculous because they're really trying to make it serious.
If they're going to make it serious. It makes you want to laugh at it even more because it's Aquaman. They need Megalodon or something down there with him. I never understood why Aquaman... Fish can't jump out of the water and...
Oh, Khal Drogo? There you go, Jason. Oh, the dude from Game of Thrones guy. See, I was trying to think if he was on there. Wait, now the game has changed.
Now you're on board. I might have a little bit more faith in this. Because he looks pretty cool there. He's kind of doing a Dwayne the Rock Johnson look. I'm surprised they didn't cast the Rocks.
And is that Batman Superman behind him? Yeah, you got to have the double logo going on. That's the new thing. So they're going to work him in here. Oh, yeah.
And he's going to be like Thor of the sea. That's what I'm saying. Like, how do you... I don't understand how you get all of this in one plot that makes sense. And again, like, you can call out the Marvel movies for doing that, but they also took like five movies first before they brought them all together.
They're trying to do it all in one movie. Like, that makes no sense to me. So. I guess DC and. DC's just trying to play catch up.
They're like, Marvel's doing a really cool thing here, putting all their stuff in the same property. We better hurry up. So... They don't want to invest, you know, seven or eight years into planning this. They want to knock it out in one summer, which is kind of a bad idea.
Yeah. I don't see that. Going over so well. But I'll go see it anyway because that's what we do here. So.
Begrudgingly go see movies and then get some prize sometimes. I guess we're on the superhero role because that was just about all the stuff that came out after Star Wars was all superheroes. So Deadpool? Do we want to address the Deadpool? What if I told you we can make you better?
You're a fighter. We can give you abilities most men only dream of. Make you a superhero. You just promise you'll do right by me so I can do right by someone else. And please don't make the super suit green or animated.
I think I don't have anything to say about that. We all just are just like, we can. That's the thing. It's a fine line because it's funny how much Deadpool has jumped into the mainstream because I don't think most people knew who the hell he was four or five years ago. Even when he was in that other Wolverine movie like I think most people that weren't hardcore comic fans had no idea who Deadpool was and like now I see so much Deadpool merchandise like just in like regular like chain stores there's just a whole section of Deadpool and I'm like where is this coming from because we don't even have a movie to tie him to yet officially so I'm like it's weird that it's taken off this big in this mainstream for something that they really haven't even done the movie and really just sort of confirmed, okay, yeah, we're officially doing it.
Here's a trailer. Instead of that leaked footage they did last year. I know there are a lot of Marvel animated shows and maybe Deadpool plays a big part. I don't watch any of those. See, I think there are hardcore Marvel fans that have loved him for years.
He's definitely got a following, but again, not like the mainstream stuffed characters following that he suddenly has that I'm like, this is weird. So it's like, It's kind of going to work, at least when that movie comes out. There's enough push for Deadpool something that the opening weekend will probably be decent. Now, whether or not they do a good job, I don't know. Watching that, I'm like.
I think it's just going to be another. It's a fine line. Because they're being... And that's what they gave him shit for with the Wolverine thing. They sewed his mouth shut.
The one thing he's known for is making his smart-ass comments. And they sewed his mouth shut. And it made no sense. And it's stupid. Which, granted, most of what goes on in that Wolverine movie is really stupid.
But they aren't doing that now. They're giving him the freedom to jump around and say funny things. which is the entire selling point of the comic, so I'm told. I don't really read it, but that's what he does. That's why you have this character, so he can break the fourth wall, look at you, the reader, and say something funny. So they're kind of sticking with that, but I'm like, it's a fine line.
Some of their jokes are so. Lame like I'm like it's I'm like are we just watching Ted 2 at this point like they're so like it's just base humor like I don't know maybe that's what we're. Going for but Ryan Reynolds is gonna be quirky yeah his head looks like an avocado okay. That's my other question of things that blew up out of nowhere who would have ever seen TJ Miller being like the giant properties that he's in now he's funny I like him as a comedian but The weird things he's popping up in now as an actor, it's very strange. And that was one of those, I'm watching this trailer.
Like, really? T.J. Miller is playing this role? At first I was like, is he Deadpool? Because I saw him on Twitter and he was doing all this Deadpool shit.
Because I didn't know it was going to be Ryan Reynolds. I just literally yesterday found out about the movie. And I was like, that's an interesting... I mean, I might actually see just because that's so weird. And he I feel like he's actually he's genuinely funny.
He can be. He's funny and like just friends. Like in certain capacities, you know, he thrives. Come on. Are you guys a girl in a pizza place?
No, I'm talking about T.J. Miller. I'm sorry. Yeah, because I thought he was going to be Deadpool. But I think like if he was Deadpool, that'd be interesting.
Definitely be a different movie. It'd be very different. I don't know i feel like it's yeah there's a fine line on this could be this could work just the way they're trying to make it work or it could fall flat on its face and just be dumb for the sake of dumb jokes and like you really gotta you gotta work that balance between the jokes and the action and like i'm sure the action will be great but the jokes are what could kill it like if it's If it's not funny and it's not the right kind of funny, it's going to fall flat. Motherfucker, you are hard to look at. Like a testicle with teeth.
You look like Freddy Krueger face-fucked a topographical map of Utah. So do we want to move on to Suicide Squad? Yeah. It's taken some work, but I finally have them. The worst of the worst.
Where? Let's just say I put them in a hole and threw away the hole. There's rumors, Amanda, that some of them have. abilities oh yeah i have seen things maybe superman was some kind of beacon for them to creep back from the shadows i. Want to assemble a task force of the most dangerous people on the planet who i think can do some good. They're bad guys exactly and if anything goes wrong we blame them we have built-in deniability what makes you think you can control.
Them Suicide Squad. Whoa. Somebody's pretty excited about the Joker, I hear. One or two people talked about that. You want to just break right into the Joker action?
Let's just go right to that. Those teeth is. They nailed it with him. He's got. I'm looking forward to it.
Forward to it. Just to start off right there, I think Suicide Squad's going to be awesome. I think Jared Leto looks great. Margot Robbie is a Robbie. I don't know exactly how you say her name.
She's gorgeous even as this evil harlequin. I do feel like that is perfect casting. I just saw her in Wolf of Wall Street, and I feel like she'd make a great Harley Quinn. She's like 23, 24 years old. She's super young.
She's very young, yeah. I think that is probably going to sell this for most people. Again, that aren't already hardcore comic fans. There's a lot of Harley Quinn fans. There's a lot of Harley Quinn fans, and there's never been a version of Harley Quinn.
She wasn't even a comic character. She was created on Batman the Animated Series. And then it just snowballed, and people loved her character. Which is a testament to that show, by the way. Which, again, that's one of the best.
Which is a great, great show. One of the best, I won't even say animated shows, just best shows ever written. I put it above the Nolan Batman movies. It's so solid. I really do.
That's a fair assessment. It's just a great TV show, period. And it's available online now. I think, for a long time, yeah, they didn't put it out. I don't know what their licensing or whatever, but yeah, I think they're finally getting around to, because they did the box sets there for a while, too, so.
But yeah, I think that's one of those that I think it's been building, and her fan base is so huge now. You can't go to a convention without seeing 40 or 50 Harley Quinns. She is the favorite, especially in the girl. There's a huge geek girl culture now, and it's like they don't have a ton of girls. So the fact that we're finally getting a live version of Harley Quinn, I think a lot of people are going to go just to see her.
Now, was there a teaser release for Suicide Squad? Okay. Well, I mean, they've done a weird... teaser before, didn't they? But this was like a different one that they did, I think, just for Comic-Con. And it's got way more footage on it.
And of course, everyone wants to see Jared Leto as the Joker. There's been all kinds of stuff floating around, which may or may not be preordained and placed in certain spots for a reason. But just looking at him coming down at the camera, it's a new Joker. It's like a mix of the Arkham... video game jokers along with ledger's joker and it's gonna be leto's joker it's. A little to me that that's what i was gonna give him credit it does seem like they're going an entirely different direction i don't even feel like it's the heath ledger version as much as maybe the old animated like i feel like maybe it's more mark hamill than anybody because he's kind of like the ultimate joker like he really is it's a shame there was never any way for him to physically play it because he never really even when he was young it would have been weird casting visually, but he nails that voice so perfectly that I feel like that's more than anything maybe what they're tapping into with this new version.
I mean, Leto just looks visceral and evil, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with it. He is kind of a crazy person, but when he gets into the right role, he works. He seems like a strange dude in the real world, but he will immerse himself in a role, and he can nail it on occasion. I don't know most of them, other than Will Smith. Like a lot of the other ones, I don't.
Is he in it? Yeah. Okay. I didn't know if he was going to be in it or not. But the rest of them, I'm like either they're newer actors or I'm just not that familiar with the character.
Again, I didn't read Suicide Squad, so I'm kind of catching up with the story itself and trying to piece together how they're going to put all these characters into the deal. So it looks interesting, but I can't gauge it because I don't know those characters near as well in their other form. I don't know. Is it a good lineup from what you can tell? Well, I'd only watched it twice, the trailer.
And from what I can tell, they're assembling the general gist of what's going on as far as in the comic universe goes. And you know there's this whole political aspect to. It with. The woman at the beginning. They're having that dinner.
And she's like, you know, after the fiasco with Superman... Like, let's just have a group of the most, the bad guys, like the worst of the worst. And then that way, like, we'll just let them run rampant and we don't have to take any responsibility for what they do. That was another moment when I was just like, I wish I could give it more credit. Because, like, the fact that it could also be spinning off this whole other movie based on, like, from this point on, everything in the DC movie universe changes because Superman's such a jerk.
And he just annihilates people that everything from that point in the universe changes. And all these different characters and movies have to come into play because of that first dumb movie. So again, I wish I could give him that much credit. Maybe at this point that's what they're doing with it, whether he meant to or not. But it does seem like they're building these two new things coming out in the DC Universe. specifically around that whole incident.
I feel like they're just finally acknowledging that not really that people like Superman. Just as a superhero, I feel like we'll just make him into just a shitty villain, sort of. Yeah. Because that's more, you clearly would rather see that than, you know, being. In his own movie.
To me, it's always hard to get on board with him because he's so omnipotent, you know? It's like there's no struggle there. I feel like the only way it ever worked in those old movies is because Christopher Reeve is awesome. Yeah, and Richard Donner. He sold that character.
Those goofy, like the second Superman, like the Richard Donner cut. I feel like that is the ultimate Superman experience. That is what it should be every time. It's fun, and it's light to some extent, and he's just so damn charming as Superman that he makes it work, where they've handed it to two guys since then, and both times I'm like, I don't care about that guy. I'm just like, I don't care.
So I think that's part of it, is unless you can carry... all of the nonsense that comes with being Superman and being all powerful and like, you're just not that interesting a character. That's the sad part about it. It's like Bruce Wayne, it's an interesting messed up dude. Yeah. Superman just can do whatever the hell he wants.
He's all powerful. Like, I don't know. That's, I think that's a huge hurdle to have to get over when doing anything with Superman. So it would be more interesting to just turn him into a villain and have all of the people fighting against him in the DC universe, which they're all going to try to cram into one movie. That Superman, he's so easily influenced and malleable.
So, is there anything we left out in this? As far as superhero movies? Or any of the recent stuff that's come out. It's how the teaser for Green Inferno. I've heard pretty interesting things it sounds as much as I've kind of hit and miss with him as a director this is the most interesting thing he's done.
In a while and I'm not like the biggest Eli Roth fan but I've thought like based on those hostile movies like the best thing about him was that he was a good director like he needs to stop but the thing is well yeah but the thing is this trailer didn't look like I mean it looked like It didn't look on this. Well, no, I was going to say it didn't quite look on the level as like the hostile. I don't know, maybe because it's outside. It's in the jungle and they're like under harsher conditions. And I'm just kind of gauging over like the bits and pieces that were in there.
It just looked like it was him trying to do something else. I feel like maybe it's intentional trying to kind of have that kind of schlocky kind of. I think he's going a Hannibal. Documentary look. Hannibal Holocaust kind of thing.
Hannibal Hanukkah? Hannibal Hanukkah. Wait, that's the new Christmas special. I think that's the new Star Wars. Star Wars, Hannibal Hanukkah.
Life Day has now become Hannibal Hanukkah. But so is it basically just, I mean, it's fairly straightforward. Just plane crash, cannibals. What I'd understood was that it was like people were trying to go volunteer and help out on an island. because they thought like these people needed their help or it's like a mission, like with a church or some type of affiliation like that. And this was just based off one article that I read.
And then, you know, they think that they're going and are going to help these people. And then they're like, actually, we're just going to eat you, which I'm like, that's easy. That's cool. Like, let's do it. I'm off.
I've already got like the weird feeling in my stomach when you see people just like getting handed over crowds and you're like, Oh, that person's going to get eaten by another person. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm just glad that he didn't go the found footage route because I feel like any other director would have done that.
I'm so sick of that. Really. I mean, I saw The Sacrament, the Ty West movie. That's what I think is the downfall of that one. It sucks because I really like him as a director.
I think he's an interesting filmmaker. I do too. But I feel like he's just better than that. I feel like he was trying to do something with it. He was trying to actually make it like it's a news crew documentary.
But it still wasn't as effective as just a regular. And I think for that one, just while we're on it, I think where it veers off is because it follows too close to a story we all already know. I felt like he was almost doing a whole different... kind of weird, go to another country, be sucked into this cult kind of thing, and then it just becomes the one everybody already heard of in the 70s. It almost exactly follows the Jonestown story. It's not subtle about it at all.
Yeah, I was like, he just completely does Jonestown. Why wouldn't you just do something else? I felt like midway in, we were in the middle of something else, and we did not know what was going to happen. That would have been way more intense. If he would.
Have done something totally different. Tastefully questionable. Yeah. But if he had actually been like, this is a movie about Jonestown. Or just do that, really.
But I kind of liked the first half of it. I liked those characters, and I liked they were midway in, and I'm like, they are into something, and shit's going to go wrong. And I'm like, oh, and it's the most conventional thing in this cult story. I was like, yeah, of course it's going to do that. I wish he would have done something original with it.
I mean, he's good at that movie... nailed making me feel unsettled but that's what it did you know i thought it was great i like ty west and i was unsettled by like the story and the way it was shot and that's what you know i think it was meant to do but you know i'll choose nick cage wicker man over it. Oh god not that i saw that one in theaters not the bees i can't remember why but. Oh man i need to get is that out on blu-ray i need to get a blu-ray copy of that god. Put your request in now. It better be.
Okay, the only other one I was going to go into, only because they released this, this wasn't even Comic-Con related. It was just this past week they released the first shot of the cast of Ghostbusters. I'm looking forward to it. I really am. Melissa McCarthy.
I was getting the, and that's, I don't know. That was going to be my question while we, again, I feel like we more than most shows of this type have a relatively balanced cast most of the time. We do have females on. As a female, do you feel one way or the other about it? Do you feel like we need female Ghostbusters?
Not really, no. To be honest. That's the response I feel most people are just like, oh, well. That's how I feel too. We don't need it, but you know what?
As long as they're making it, It's kind. Of just like a pat on the head, like, okay. It'll be a good time, probably. I don't want it to be that. No one asked, you know what I mean?
And it's fine. It's not a film that people were crying out for, like, please make another Ghostbusters. We were all satisfied. When a movie's great, I'm like, okay, leave it alone. It's there.
I don't even mind them doing another one. I'm just like, I'm trying to figure out why it's now become the girl Ghostbusters. It would make more sense to me if they continued the story on, they're still doing the Ghostbusting thing, they bring in some new people and some of them happen to be women. But like, why does it, like, it almost seems very token like of like, here's some girls. Is it officially Ghostbusters 3 or is it like a reboot?
It's just Ghostbusters. So I, I don't know how they're tying it. That's kind of annoying though. Like if they're keeping the same title. So like when you Google Ghostbusters now, like you're going to get this.
It'll be harder to like. IMDB, it says Ghostbusters 2016. It's going to cause confusion, I feel like. Yeah. And that's kind of not fair to the original movie.
So I don't know if they're going to pretend like it's, in the same universe and all the New York stuff actually happened years ago? Or if this is like reboot, totally reboot, you know? I feel like it's one of those things, again, where it's like, okay, Melissa McCarthy, she's on a roll right now. Let's do Ghostbusters with her. Kristen Wiig.
And that's the downfall. I'm like, I like these women. I want them to be in a good movie. I don't know if... this is going to be it, but like... Yeah, I wish it wasn't Ghostbusters.
I wish they were in something else together. Did anyone see the Lifetime... Sorry to D. God, I wanted to see it. The Lifetime movie.
Oh my God. Because I love watching terrible Lifetime movies. It's like... It's... It's the most entertaining...
It is. the most terrible Lifetime movie in the best way possible. Because they're trying to make it terrible, and they're succeeding. I just heard they're so straight about it. They're playing it so straight. They're so straight, and that's what makes it genius.
A lot of people are like, well, no, people are not getting the joke. I've argued with so many people who they really genuinely think that, like, no, they're making a serious movie. That was Adult Swim, wasn't it? Or the same people from Adult Swim? Because it feels like it's that level of humor.
It's like the people that get the stuff on Adult Swim get it, And everybody else is just like, what is this? And they change the channel. Well, Lifetime, they're at the point now where they're kind of rolling. I kind of hate it. I didn't like how they did the Grumpy Cat movie because I feel like they were trying to wink at you.
They're going the sci-fi route where they know why people watch their movies now. That does change the mood of it. But I feel like this, because it's like Chris and Wolverine, they're just playing it like a straight. like a script from like a Lifetime movie from the 90s, but they're just going to play the leads. It's like a funny or die type thing. Yeah.
That's what it feels like. To me, it's like you get the sense of humor or you don't. You're just going to be like, what is this and change the channel. There's no middle ground on that one. It's so funny.
But I mean, that's the thing. I like- Deadly adoption. Yeah, from the opening- That title alone is my favorite. I mean, it just starts, hits the ground, and then it's hilarious. Yeah.
Deadly adoption. And the corniest. Oh, God, it's good. The Ghostbusters thing. I like these actresses.
I mean, we know they've wanted to do three since two. They've been talking. I can dig up old Starlogs from 1990 that are like, Ghostbusters 3 on the cover. They've been building this story of them writing Ghostbusters 3 for God knows how long. So we knew another one eventually was coming.
And they were still trying to put the cast together until we lost one of them. And then they were like, well, fine, we can't do it that way. So, I mean, I would have rather them just like continue the story, kind of do a three and then just like make Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig on the team and like not try to jam it into a weird thing that like just make them characters. That's all. I don't know.
I don't understand the. rebranding idea that they're now going for like i'd rather just see them be characters in the movie especially. Just by calling it ghostbusters it's like they're trying to just make a new original. Well and it's exactly the same like here's the black one i'm like it's so cheesy the way they're going about it and. Was i kind of like maybe i just i just this isn't the case but i feel like part of the title like of ghostbusters it was like a like it i don't know what's the what's the phrase um like a double entendre or something like it would like the busters were like guys like hey buster like we're ghost busters that might have just been you that's just because they're staying with it because they're they're just they're they're ghostbusters too in this new one so like oh okay maybe that wasn't like.
I think that's i just applied that to busting makes me feel. Good yeah are they gonna bring are they gonna bring back ray parker jr i would.
