What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian, and on this exclusive Horror Club episode, we head back to the Bastion to discuss a new horror movie, and in true Meltdown fashion. And since we are specifically jumping into the young adult horror novel turned into film world, who better to assess the situation than our resident YA horror enthusiast, Misty. And yes, she has plenty to say about how this movie fits into the YA horror world. Or doesn't.
And of course, as per usual, that also means Jay gets roped into it. Which is awesome because as you probably know, he always has his own special take on things. Plus, we usually get each other off track with some sort of ridiculous story. So if you're not already a member, obviously now is the time to join the Meltdown Horror Club, where you'll get to hear us say awesome things like this. Well, I mean, to carry over from the end of the last movie slash beginning of this movie, that is a lot of phone cord.
There is one called Lights Out where they go to a camp called Camp Nightwing. And it does have some of the same... She has a girl who's her former best friend who's pissed at her for telling on her for something, which is. Oh, with the camps that were like they were summer camps where your where your parents would drop you off. This is 80s.
This was in the 70s. Day camps or stay in there. No, this was like at like when you got out of school, like in the summer camp. You may have been out of school for a whole week, and then my parents took. Me and dropped me off at camp.
Shipped you off. And I was there the entire fucking summer. Those straws were a struggle. Yeah. The struggle is real, man.
You actually poke all the way through. All the way through. Or stab yourself with the pointy side of the straw. Or you get a defective one that didn't have a fucking straw. Or didn't have the hole punched through.
So you're just going straight through. You just had to fight it. The barrels. Squeeze it. And I was terrified I was going to get stuck and die underground.
Are we talking about like real spelunking or? Like me having to crawl through holes. Okay, yeah, yeah. Which they discuss when they're in the tunnels and everything. Which again, there's a Fear Street book where they're lost in tunnels underneath the school.
So that kind of ties together too. They're underneath the tunnel. It's called Trapped. They're under the school because they're in detention. So they're like, oh, well, you hear back in the day there was this place where kids used to hang out under the school.
So we're going to go get in these tunnels under the school. And there's this red mist. You could use a boom box. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I was like, you know what my room doesn't have?
A fucking boom box. I liked these characters. I liked her. I liked the sister. Yeah, even the sister being the preppy wannabe girl that she is.
You see, like, there's more there, and you see she is trying to put that behind her and have some sort of life that most kids in this town don't have. And it's like, she doesn't even seem to fucking care, because she's got Sam, so everything's okay. I'm like, but your fucking best friend just died. You don't care about that at all? There's a flashback for you if you listen to the Sleepaway Camp episode.
Where we bitched about Judy the whole damn time. Because Judy. Wait, wait, what is Judy? You know what? I remember as a kid sweating my ass off in camp.
Because we were in these little cabins and they didn't have AC. And it was fucking miserable. But they were like, you know what? You're a kid, so shut the fuck up. Yeah, that's pretty much how it works.
Stay in your sweaty ass cabin. All I can say is while we're still in the potty area. Sadie putting her head through the hole. Is the most disturbing thing in this movie. I saw a lot of kids die, but none of that was near as disturbing as her.
As long as she got an axe to the head or something like that. I think everybody got an axe to the head. That's kind of the running thing on this one. I was like, whoa, they are not blinking away from killing kids, even less in this one. This was a generational thing.
Every person that I know that is of the next wave and younger. You had cassette tapes and you kept them in the little the case. And of course, you could only like the one I had only fit like maybe 25 cassette tapes. And the problem is. Because we leave the weird story part of it, like they're trying to piece together the story so much in that first movie.
We're here. It's just her telling the story. There's no piecing it together. It's not until we come back that they're like, ah, so see, it was this and this. And then they get back into that part of the piece and the whole overarching tale together.
But once we're... Oh, yeah. That's another thing. We were talking about that. They never explain why she has.
Yes, they existed, but it seems unlikely they were there. Yeah. I appreciated the body count in this movie. Because they were not messing around. Dead people, not my nitpicking on juice boxes.
Not even just dead people. Dead kids. Oh, yeah. Kids. Because they weren't even just going after the campers.
They were going after all the kids from Shadyside. I found the website for the camp that I used to go to. Oh, God. They're still around. And before the week was out, my sister was dead.
And they cut specifically to. When I was a kid at camp, I was so hoping something like this would happen, but it never did. Because you never came through. What? Because you never came through.
You didn't snap, finally. Well, you know, the funny thing is, I always got in trouble at camp for making weapons. This doesn't surprise me, actually. I always thought something was going to happen. And you were going to have to defend the camp?
No, I was going to have to. Defend yourself. Fuck everybody else. Defend yourself. I don't give a fuck about everybody else.
Fucking defend myself. Now, as I said, if you join up and become a Melketeer, not only will you get to hear this episode in its entirety, also the entire first entry in this series as well, but you'll also get to hear all of the upcoming episodes, including we've already got a very cool 70s classic, we'll say, coming up on a future episode.
