About this episode

Chris and artist Maggie the Odd continue their look at Animal Planet's found footage horror anthology series that often misses but sometimes lands its cryptids subject matter: Lost Tapes. This episode is all about the one and only Kraken, a giant sea monster with a reputation that precedes it.

We're there are creatures science refuses to recognize. If our eyes see it, if our cameras capture it, does it exist? Do you believe? Hell? Everyone, and welcome to another episode of Lost Tape Chronicles.

Here at Scary Stories, we tell I am your host, Kristashi, and I'm joined one skin as always by my co host, the one and only artist among town man among men, one of those three guys. Yeah, yeah, that's me. Howdy's true? It is you. How are you doing, Maggie?

Surviving so far? Feeling pretty funky fresh? Now that we got what our fifth water episode? Now, yeah, god, yes, and guess what, Chris, we see it. Yeah, we actually see it.

So it's legitimately a Kraken episode. Yeah. So, on this episode of the Lost Tape Chronicles, we are talking about the second episode of the third season of Animal Planets Lost Tapes, a show that used to be about cryptids and might still be, or at least about big animals, which okay, yeah sure, why yeah, so yeah, on this episode we're gonna be talking about the Kraken. This episode aired the same evening as the zombie episode September twenty eight, twenty ten, a different time A simpler time. And this episode once again has a strange cold open which involves two guys getting attacked by the Krack in which then you think is going to be the Enigma Corporation, but instead it's a kind of Josh Gates documentary film crew, Jacques Cousteau guy A little bit kind of treasure.

Yeah, treasure hunting, that's all you need to know. Grave robbing, I don't know, man loves his treasure. Seems like a real asshole. A bit that I think that I think is kind of the bigger issues. So yeah, we have the character of Derek Barrow, who is a treasure hunter who is going to look for a Finnish ship that has Russian treasure and they find the ship, and upon finding the ship, they have one of their guys go down and dive to look for it, and wouldn't you know, the Kraken attacks him and kills him, and unbeknownst to everybody on board the ship, they don't know that he's dead.

It just seems like he's dead. But they then send another person down, right, I mean it's like they're operating on real dumb shit logic. As they would say, a bit like dude is way too into his treasure, and like, I appreciate that they mentioned two thousand leagues under the seat, but this is no Captain Nemo, and I wish people would understand who the fuck Captain Nemo was and stopped comparing every asshole captain that wants his treasure to Captain Nemo. That's more Ahab territory. Thank you.

That is my rant for this one, because yeah, Captain Nemo is not a bad guy. Captain Ahab is. Captain Nemo is. Captain Nemo just doesn't like people, and I understand why. Yeah, he's still an asshole, but like, yeah, okay, so he you know, held people hostage because they went on a mythic voyage with him.

But still it's like, come on, man, he didn't give a shit about treasure. He just wanted the conservation of a land. So yeah, okay, I think I think on the face of it, this episode has some interesting ideas. I like the idea of a crack in there in the middle of the ocean, which I think is scary, like being on a boat in the middle of the ocean and this creature is attacking and making it so you can't go anywhere, and then it's kind of there in the water where you are looking for the treasure. Like I like all of that, but then you have the characters acting like fucking nimro Oh.

Yeah, the people in this episode are not good beyond morons, to the point where it's it's hard once again to empathize with any of the characters because they're so fucking stupid. I do not remember any of their fucking well, you don't even have to remember their names. All you have to remember is that they all willingly go into the water. Yeah, when they know something is up, I mean right, like they're they're like, oh no, no, no, like he could still be alive. It's like you haven't heard from him in like an hour.

Yeah, I was about to say that is probably the weirdest move in this whole episode, is that they just assume he's chilling down below in the water, Like that's not a thing people do. They don't just chill forty feet underwater and not respond to any of your signaling, like, oh, if you found the treasure, it's like legitimately he would be like, well, guys, wait do you see this because it's twenty ten, so so what did you think of the crack in itself? Okay? Uh. First of all, CGI was not up to part, but that's okay.

I'm trying not to hold that against them, because the CGI is real. It's they tried. They at least tried, And I will say some of the visual I don't want to say visual gags because that makes it seem laughable, which it kind of was, but I don't want to insult it this time because they tried it. There's a few that I thought was really cool. One they brought the animal facts back.

They've done dang the bile luminescence mentioned, and then you get to see a giant glowing thing under the water. Good visual dig it. Whoever the fuck went underwater for a time then got spat back up was covered in ink, and it's like, okay, good visual. We're actually solidifying the creature in this environment. CGI was not good and they didn't really show any of the aggression have like an impact on the boat.

You get a lot of the star Trek shaky cam technique. Oh my god, it's like rife with it. Oh it's the only thing that is It's like not that hard to rock a boat without capsizing it. So I was impressed that they went as far as going like whoa, but not actually doing anything that would affect the environment, including the water, which once again they've done water effects where they moved something in the water just for like a little bit of something. The CGI isn't convincing when it's like absolutely splaccid.

Yeah, it's a very CAUTI apparently. Yeah, there there's never a sense of the size of the creature being actually conveyed on screen, like it feels right for the CGI, but it's like really hard foreshortening. So yeah, the CGI is not good, so it doesn't help. But yeah, the size of this creature is never really conveyed. And that's the thing.

You know, krakens. Krakins have been around for a very long time. I mean it still exists. Krakins are you know, being described as far back as the seventeen hundreds. But if they come from the like sailors, superstition and mythology, because again they're they're out in the ocean, traveling all this way around the world, and they're seeing things that they are having a hard time explaining, and you know, you know, you have these wood carvings of giant octopuses eating ships, and that's where this idea comes from, this idea that you know, these krakens live off the coast of Norway.

Kraking is a Norwegian word and it's I guess, I guess For me, I don't really have a connection to something like krakens because I'm not a sea person, and so I'm trying to figure out if they did this creature justice because like I don't really have a frame of reference outside of pop culture stuff. Yeah, that's fair. I mean, honestly, just googling giant squid pictures and knowing that some have washed up on shore as well as like deep sea footage of that ship is just absolutely I mean, it's daunting in a very beautiful way. And the fact that they have mass intelligence is also one of those factors that really make it a scary not necessarily enemy, it's with the aggression it becomes an enemy, which I'm glad that they brought up the rarity of squids being aggressive, but when they are, they're very smart about it, very like meticulous.

It would be tremendous seeing a giant squid just like wrapped around a ship because it's in its territory, which didn't be out of the realm of possibility. Yeah, especially it's territorial right well. And it's just one of those things where it's like they touched on portraying the scale and the effect of it, but it was mostly all build up. It was just one of those things which I think a lot of oceanic movies as well as TV shows tend to do where it's a lot of just the looming dread of not seeing it but interacting with it. It's usually held at the very ass end and it's like no, no, no, man.

They're usually pretty methodical about it. They might not be like the actively seek out your boat of like Moby Dick, but it's not terribly far either, especially if you're going to a specific spot for treasure that has been gone to many times for treasure, so kind of makes it like you're a self fulfilling prophecy type of thing, which I think is still intriguing, and they could have pushed on it a little bit more, but as far as conveying like the mythological scale of this sucker, well, but that's it well, and that and that's the thing that's the thing about the Krack in is so, like you mentioned, there are giants squid. Giants squid exist, but giant squid and giant octopus are two different things.

This is a giant ass octopus bigger than any giant squid ever could be. Yeah, which, again, like the size of this thing that they show in this episode seems more like a giant squid than a giant octopus. Its size is not very well conveyed. It's Yeah, like you said, there's octopus as tangible man a boat it should have and it's it's barely interacting with the boat, you know. That's that's the issue is, like you said, there's not there's not a real sense of the krack in interacting with anyone once they're above the water.

I mean, you know there are there's the female character that goes in and she gets you know, spit up back out with the ink all over her. There is the character that gets killed underwater. Then there's like another character. You see his body and it's like crushed a bit. But it's like other than that, there's no physical evidence of the scale, like the suckers or the beak, Like right, there's plenty of things to solidify that and how dangerous.

It can be that they just kind of especially when you know this show has done really nice makeup job, like you take too much. It realized recently is last season. It's I know, it feels like an over reliance on CGI because, yeah, you have the only interactions with the people and the creature are these like CGI tentacles that come out of the water. Yeah, and it going underneath the boat very flatly, but it went onto the boat, right and then you like you see it kind of out in the distance lit up. But that's it.

Yeah, it's it's I don't know, it's it's so strange to me because this is the one Water episode where they I really thought they would nail it, and I mean, to be fair, it's definitely not the worst on this at least they did make a story that was central to this, so it makes sense. It's just the execution fell very short in my opinion. Well, that's the thing. I mean, like you mentioned that there are no more Water episodes. This is the last one, so from here on out it's all going to be terrestrial stuff.

So I guess, I mean, I think this might be the best Water episode thinking back on the rest of them. Yeah, this one at least seems a lot more together, which I can appreciate, Like, yeah, the human characters are garbage, but it's not like I really rooted for anybody in the past episodes, just saying well, and and that for me is the thing that I think about when I think about this show is that it didn't do a very good job of giving me a reason to care about these characters anyways, because once again, the real issue with a lot of these characters in this show is they're not much of a character anyways. They're just like they're just like this stereotype stand in that exists to die. Yeah, And honestly, this season's pretty brutal with like leave no survivors, Like the last two seasons were at least somewhat generous and having a survivor or a handful where it's just one person died.

But no, this is very stark, like why would I care about these characters. It's very much the early thousand slasher flick mentality where it's like, just put these stereotypes out and boom done. Yeah, And that's the thing, like in every single one of these episodes that we've seen, you know, recently, and so far this season it's like the characters just don't matter and it'll probably continue, and it hasn't there I guess there hasn't really been a push at any point in this show. So I can't say I'm surprised to develop any of these characters, which is fine, but you gotta give us a little bit more because otherwise we will be completely uninvested and we'll we're just waiting for them to die right well, and especially when you introduce a wraparound concept like this is the second episode of season three and we have not heard a peep of Enigma Corporation other than our usual routine from the last two seasons.

It's very strange having like expendable characters that don't come back and then inconsistencies right off the rip with episodes, no explanation, no nothing. It was very experimental and weird. Yeah, why wasn't Why wasn't it people from Enigma Corporation going out to look for the crack and they set it up that way. They have one plant in there being like that's the person that's like, all right, we need to cut the line, and then the guy's like, no, I'll want Metricia and then that's the conflict, like why else would that Dangiz be recording everything other than it's like, oh, well it's for a documentary. Well I loved an Enigma Corp spy on that one.

Well that well, there needed to be something with the Enigma Corp because they set it up with the opening that like there's this thing happening and it's killing people, and it's like it feels like that's something that someone is seeing that should be doing something about it, right, So I don't get it. It's it's so strange. It's so it's such a strange choice. This is again you know, like the water creatures are such a hard thing to nail, and this one kind of works better because it's on a boat. So therefore it feels the least formulaic of the last five.

Yeah, because all the other ones are like yeah, yeah, yeah, god, it's it's better than the other water episodes. But that is not saying essentially anything. Yeah. Yeah, that's a really low bar. Yeah saying you trumped out cat noodling catastrophe.

Yeah, it's it's not raising far too high for you. No, And that's and that's the thing. It's like I don't. I guess I don't understand, And just so I don't understand how. I don't understand how they have such a hard time nailing the nailing these episodes with these creatures that like write the episode themselves.

It's strange. It's almost like they forget the details that make it scary and they hope that just throwing out raw facts and dangerous scenarios that it kind of levels the grit, like the gravity of it, and it's just not quite It takes away a lot of the mystique behind it, Like this one was shot like in the day, daytime, right, there was no late night attack or that was essentially no. The very end was them getting attacked at night. Okay, because they needed the night for the bioluminescence, but that was the only advantage that they took over that. And even then, it's like there are other things that you can do to signal that there is something interacting with this boat and with water and holding your boat still, Like they didn't even rev the boat end engine to see if they could get away or something like that.

There was no real interaction with it. They were talking around it. It's very strange. Well, and then The other thing is, you know, if you were if you're talking about the real giant squid, which I think this would be more akin to the colossal squid, which is which is a which is a difference the colossal squid. Is it exhibits abyssal gigantism because it lives so far underwater.

Yes, and so you know, for an octopus to exist at this high level is very weird. Yeah, And it's like forty six feet long at its longest, like this, this octopus would have to be as big as that, which like again is just not it's it just hasn't It's not a real thing. But the squids are a real thing, and it is scary. But like we've mentioned, they don't actually attack people. No, it's a very rare, rare thing in normal squids, let it loan squids that also understand the concept of just how giant they are in the world.

That's you know, that's just a hard concept to really really convey without some physical interaction to happen. Yeah, and there isn't any And you know, showing a tentacles jumping out of the water and smacking someone in the face, is not enough. It's yeah, especially with shaky cam like it just does not have the same effect. Yeah, no, and that's and that is the other thing. I mean, they don't They don't do a very good job of conveying the sense of claustrophobia on the boat, which they should have done, because again, that's part of this what makes as scary as you're in the middle of nowhere on this boat with this giant octopus attacking the boat, but it doesn't really ever attack the boat, attack the boat, and then yeah, it's I don't know.

I have a hard time really getting motivated about these big water creatures anyways, primarily because of how poorly the show has done them. Yeah, and really, if you go simple, it's very effective any time that like a water creature interaction has happened, Like you know what, just for ships and giggles, let's throw out legend as an example with the seahag scene, It's like, yeah, the creature costume was absolutely fantastic, but it was the fact that you could not see its approach. That's what makes crocodiles so creepy for me, where it's like, no, they're silent, they just drift along. You could barely see them in general, and they're fast and strong and they're smart. They're built to survive.

And it's like same concept with like these big creatures. They get so big for a reason, Like they still start out as babies. It's just they've been around because they've survived. Being able to put that perspective in motion is really key, and I think you don't need to overdo it. If the boat rocked suddenly, or if like it revved and was going absolutely nowhere, like, you don't even have to.

I was fully prepared to be disappointed that we don't see the crack in whatsoever, but they would just kind of like have these little bob points and it still would have been interesting. It would have been a copile, but it still would have been interesting. This one was the opposite. We got to see the creature, but there's no like off kilter things going on. Well, and that's and that's the thing.

It's like, so you have this opportunity now where you're out on a boat in the middle of nowhere, you can do some kind of different things with the narrative, and instead of doing anything, they just they really just use the boat as if it were land. Yeah, yeah, pretty much. It's they're like safe spot. But it's like, dude, if you were out in the ocean, Like, that's a relatively small ship. It's not like a fucking pirate galleon that you see the kraken usually wrapped around, right, So this is like a eat death thing.

Yeah, this is like a tiny ship. Yeah, it's again, the creature's size is not made very apparent that it's actually a kracket. It seems more like a giant squid, and giant squids are scary. I mean, colossal squids are scary. To a creature's forty six feet long because it lives in the dark, deep areas of the water.

Water is scary, but you know, they don't actually attack people. That's the problem. They're scarier in fiction than they are in real life because they don't actually attack people, which again, like that doesn't matter at all, but but it's still a good detail right there. And also, this episode doesn't do enough anyways to really be interesting, and it really falls short of being a scary krack in episode. It falls short of being a scary episode in general.

But as the most successful water episode that means very little, right. There has been less spectacular attempts at that. Not that this was the worst episode either, but it just it doesn't quite hit the same way. And I was trying to think if it would have been better if, instead of the treasure being the main plot point, whether it was a hunt for the kraken, But I don't I don't know if that would make it better or worse. I think it's just such an a strange interaction that wasn't as fleshed out as I wanted it to be, especially with like the reintroduction of like way more animal facts behind this one, and like they didn't even mention the fact that a lot of them like camouflage themselves, Like I thought for sure they were going to put that out.

Yeah, they can essentially go invisible, right because they had camera footage like underwater, so I figured they would have mentioned that, just as like a Mulligan for well, why haven't we seen this giant, massive thing that we have attached to our boat and it's like camouflage, bro, And it's like not they mentioned literally everything else. But the real question that I have for you is how do you feel about the way the episode ends with the look into the octopus's eye? Oh? I know, right, isn't that just so iconic, right, so cheese, Like, oh dude, I know what they were going for. I mean, I get it, but I know, it's just it looks so cheesy.

It's so bad, especially when like that's one of the few scenes that you actually see the creature, Like just general wreckage would have been more daunting. Yeah. I think that's the real problem is the fact that the final shot of the episode that really crutches itself with CGI is a look into a giant octopus I a reflection of a giant octopus I with CGI, And it's like, oh, man, like this this is often, this is really bad. Just don't dig a bigger hole for yourself. Ye please, thank you?

And why did the captain survive? That's what I didn't understand, dide. I was pissed off. He was all about like, I mean, yeah, I guess survivor is guilt because he was the one making the dumbest choices aside for like actually doing it. But but everybody else died and he's the only one that survives.

Like that seems I don't know's it's a straight it's a strange episode. I'm glad that it's a water episode that three quarters works better than all the other ones. But again, the water episodes with this show are just, oh dismal. I don't know what the hell is wrong with them in water it's like a curse. And they never did a Lockness Monster episode, which is wild to me.

No Paleocryptids, like, no, no, it's not a thing, no for for such oh my god, for such a well known like the I would say, like in the top three, it's like bigfoot Lockness Monster and then what Chupacabra. Maybe, yeah, I guess lost Man's definitely high ranking YETTI, Like I don't fucking know, but like the Lockness Monster is always in that conversation. Yeah, I mean that's the Quintessen. That's like the first thing you think of for most people, for most people. And yeah, and with that, there is no Lockness Monster episode.

Can you believe that? I honestly have a hard time believing this show didn't do a Lockness Monster episode. To be fair, anytime that they do, like Famous Cryptids, they totally eat ship though, so it's like maybe they they're like, we probably shouldn't. I mean that's fair, But at the same time, I don't know they have eaten shit on everything else. Anyway, you've gone this far.

Three seasons is a hell of a long time. Yeah, it's it's very strange to me that the krack in is how they end the water episodes, because right, go figure, it's a very basic creature. But I mean animal facts. I guess still they could have done animal facts for the lackness monster too easily. Dinosaur facts.

It's just give us pleasure facts like I come, please, Yeah, it's I don't know, I am I'm so I don't know. I'm so disappointed by the show's lack of care given to the cryptid Like, yeah, like the cryptids are supposed to be the focus of the show. The show is about interacting with these kind of mythological cryptid creatures, and yet like it's just like, now, they should have been working around the interactions with the creatures first and then build everything else off of that, Right, characters make sense because it seems like they were grasping at straws for scenarios to put people in those places when really there's like a whole slew of reasons for like people to be around these cryptids, and like, I don't even know why they haven't done like a straight up Oh well we're hunting cryptid, so cryptid reasons, right, like bigot hunt.

Right. I understand why they don't do these things, but at the same time, it's like you're allowed to like, yeah, yeah, people do this shit all the damn time. Yeah, I don't understand. I'm I'm glad that we're done with the water episodes because they were a real drag. Oh they're a pill.

Yeah, and I'm I'm really not wanting to have to deal with any more of this show's lack less your attempts at making water scary. But yeah, what what a shame that they didn't do a luck in a sponsor episode. I know, terrible And that for me is like it's a strange thing because you know, the krack In is a not a literary creature, but again it's a creature inspired by something that's real, yeah, which is the giant squid. Because I don't think the crack can exists, but the giant squid does, which is what people were seeing. So the giant squid is scary, but it's just not aggressive.

Well, it's like another giant animal episode, Like we've seen a billion and a half of those things. So it's like, Okay, yeah, I could see the line of logic, sure, but especially in a season that initially presented itself as not quite following the script to what they were trying to, you know, model an episode around, it's like, Okay, we're just making it up. Except for this one. You can definitely see, like the team seems a bit more on this so far. Yeah.

Well, and and the other thing I think about is, like you just mentioned, there is a lack of the through line that they've presented in the first episode, which is strange and I don't And the next episode has the Enigma Corporation again, but like there, it's I figured it was going to be every episode they were going to reintroduce them, Yeah, because that would make sense, And especially so early in the season, it's very weird. Yeah, to do a back to back airing on one night and only one of those episodes is an Enigma one, but then the next time you do it. Yeah, I don't get it. I don't get it. I don't get I don't get a lot of the decisions that are being made right now with the show because I don't, like we've talked about I don't really think that there needed to be any overarching mythology, but the fact, you know, the fact that there is now is okay.

But they of course aren't doing it very well, so that almost not okay, right. It almost seems like it was like their PR department saying, all right, now, you guys need to do you know, an episode on all of these creatures. Also, we developed this keen idea used if you want, if you're having trouble figuring out how to get a camera in the mix, and it's like, I mean, it's still not very intuitive, like, yeah, sure, Enigma Corp. Gets sent out to like monitor these things, but at the same time or something, it's like why, I get why they're recording, but it still doesn't make sense because they're not doing a very good job. Like I said in the last episode.

Yeah, and it's made very clear to us that I think they're never going to do a very good job. No, it's just very strange. I don't know why I have the overarc if it's not going to be a significant development in this season. I don't know. It seems like this is this was the season that they knew they were going to get canceled, So I think like the crack In is one of the older episodes that got revamped to fill spot, like a spot out this season or something like that, where they could only record x amount of new episode, but they had plenty of the role from previous seasons that they didn't get to use.

I don't know. That's my main theory on it, because it's like, why why would they go through like such pageantry to introduce the Enigma Corporation to then just be like, oh yeah, I'm having a hard time myself figuring that out. Maybe that is the case. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me given this show and our kind of feelings on the Water episodes, on the other episode or the other seasons of the show, where we're convinced that those were interchangeable, Oh yeah, easily. I'm sure if somebody's CGI had a fucking squid in any of the other episodes, it's like, oh yeah, that works, or octopus, that's a crack Well, that's the Kraken.

Yeah, it's like, well, okay, yeah, I don't know. I'm I'm glad that the Water episodes are over, but I'm bummed that there's no lock nest, But yeah, I think, like you said, maybe it's better that there wasn't. Yeah. I just think that any time that they do one of like the hot celebrity cryptids, it's just so weird, just weird. They make very strange choices.

I think the most successful out of the bunch that we have seen so far was Mothman, and that's because it was so batshit insane. It's like, Okay, yeah, sure, why not. I can appreciate the lengths you took to get to this point. Yeah, No, Mothman was kind of weird, but Mothman, like being a period piece, was kind of different. Yeah, it's kind of Yeah.

The Bigfoot, Yeah, the Bigfoot episode I don't remember, but I don't think it's much of anything. It was the hunting party. That was the oh you're getting married to her dark Oh no, that was the Southern Sasquatch. The Bigfoot Bigfoot episode was before. Yeah, that was like season run ship that.

I think it's like episode two, but it's not very it's not very good. It's like a park ranger in the woods and like the Bigfoot is like protecting her from poachers. Essentially, it's not very good. Yeah. Oh, my god.

Yeah, I guess I forgot that one too. I mean that one's not great. Yeah, and like Jersey Evil, that one wasn't that great idea. Yeah. No, the Moffman kind of walks away as the kind of winner of the big champions so far.

I mean again, there are some bigger ones before we end the season, but god, yeah no, no more Water Locknest Monster out of the running. I wonder what their Locknest Monster episode would have been, Like, I'm genuinely curious what it would have been. I know, I am glad that we're we're saved from terrible Scottish accents, so that's yeah, right, Yeah. The Owlman of Monand was enough. H yeah, please, no, don't you're doing it's the Awlman of Bonn and like the holiest place in the chapel.

Fucking awful, real, real bad. I just love that a pedestal was the holiest place in a goddamn church. It's like, oh cool, yeah, oh man, it's the scaredest he's not touching that, oh my word. Yeah yeah, And you know what way to go out on a medium high note for the Water episodes, guy, Yeah, I can appreciate the understated, but we got to see the creature. There were people talking about the krack in at least during the last half, so that's a plus.

Yeah. I again, I am enjoying this season for what we're kind of how weird it is comparatively, but I am not to itself. Yeah, I don't. I don't know when the season's over. So far this season has definitely been very strange, so we'll see.

And yeah, the getting that final water episode out of the way this early is not a bad thing, So no, I'll take him. That's fine. Sorry, Yeah, did we do some cheating guys? Do we need to change some names around real quick before we air these? Yeah?
