We're in way too. Hello, creeps. It's me, the Crypt Cheetah. And you're listening to Movie Meltdown. What's up?
Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian. I'm Misty. Hey. Who are you?
I'm Jay. Oh. Still. Still, yeah. You get confused sometimes.
Yeah, sometimes. And we're coming to you live via digital recording from Lexington, home of Scarefest. Back for another spooky convention. We are heading towards Halloween, so I figure this will also have a nice Halloween tie-in, even though You're probably listening to this right after Halloween. Either way, this whole part of the year is Halloween filled for me, if not all of the year for me.
My favorite time of year. That's what I'm saying. It's all about Halloween times for me. It is the most wonderful time of the year. If you believe all the Halloween carols, then yes, yes it is.
That's the way I hear. I do listen to a lot of Monster Bop. Dude, I was seriously pissed off at work the other day. Okay, I was in the break room at work and I was just like chilling, minding my own business as one does when on break, wanting to relax. And I'll be goddamned if some lady sitting like one table away from me doesn't pull out her phone full volume and start playing fucking Mariah Carey.
All I want for Christmas is you. And I'm like, oh my God. Like the beast is unleashed. Why? Why?
Why? She is awoken from the ice. I'm like, it's still the middle of fucking October. Leave that shit. Packed up where it belongs.
That's what I'm saying, man. This is no time for Christmas nonsense. You ask people if they've got headphones. They should. Because I would just be like, hey, do you mind?
Do you mind stopping that? Listen to it on your headphones. I got seriously stressed out and I thought I was going to cry because I hate the holiday season so much. I mean, yeah. Season is a different thing than the holidays.
Specifically if you work in several industries that get massively impacted by holiday nonsense. So yeah, that was not a pleasant experience. No, no. I have no patience for early. Or any other weird holidays come creeping in in the middle of my October.
Or people in general who listen to their phones on full volume. Well, that in general. I have a whole other. In public spaces. Idiot that I deal with that does that all the time, too, and listens to, like, the same 20 songs over.
I was like, oh, my God, you just played this one yesterday. Stop. Get some. Yeah. Get a new song, for God's sakes.
Phone jammers are technically illegal for regular people to own, but. I've considered it. I've considered... getting the ones that just completely zap people's phones. But on the other hand, spooky songs I'm all for. There aren't as many.
I mean, there are a lot. I think people just don't realize it. I've mentioned this on an episode recently. We got the Monster Mash. When the Monster Mash came out, everybody who had an opportunity to put together a horror-themed song, album, single, whatever, They just started cranking them out.
So if you go back, like that whole 60s era, it's just, yeah, there's tons of them out there. It's just, they were literally on 45s at the time. Like half of them didn't even have like albums, albums. They just put out a single because it was like a trend and they tried to jump on it. And a lot of them are really good is the thing.
You know, I mean, just recently and not even specifically just tied to Halloween, but I mean, if you just want like scary or... monster-related or anything like that. I mean, you've got, like, Deadbolt. They've done some stuff. The Cramps. The Misfits.
Of course, Misfits. Everybody knows the Misfits. Some people are, like, themed, like, their whole thing sort of matches up. Rob Zombie. Rob Zombie.
Yeah, so, I mean, you do have certain artists that, like, specifically put out music that's centered around Halloween. But, yeah, but those are songs that are, like, you listen to them year-round. They're not, like, you know, Christmas songs. Well, yeah, because Halloween's every day. This is Halloween.
Every day is Halloween. As far as I'm concerned, it is. Ministry. So, okay, I'm bringing some up just for you. Rockin' in the Graveyard.
You got Jackie Morningstar. The Cats, Rod Willis. Nightmare, I have heard several versions of that. This is Scotty Stewart on this album. The Monster Hop, Jimmy D.
What else? The Gorilla, Burt Convy. Yes, that Burt Convy, surprisingly. As opposed to all the other I'm sure. There's somebody else out there with that name it can't be that unlikely Madhouse Jump Jekyll and Hyde Haunted House I've heard like 15 versions of Haunted House that one's a classic I was a teenage monster yeah the one eyed.
One horn flying purple people leader. Yeah that one Frankie Frankenstein I was a teenage caveman to me that one always seemed kind of iffy like what's caveman hanging out with I mean You could dress like a caveman for Halloween, I guess. But that seems like a stretch. You can get him, Frankenstein. That's the Castle Kings.
The Gila Monster. There's all kinds of them. Okay, I get it. You were right. There are.
No, I'm just saying in general. I'm like people who are just like. Your point has been proved. There's no cool music to listen to in October. No.
Do some searching. And it doesn't take much searching. Just get yourself a YouTube. And there's like, because I know I will do it sometimes. I'll just put it on a couple of different playlists that are out there and it'll just loop through and you got at least a couple hours worth of it.
Yeah. And that's usually just that era. If you go more modern, yeah, by the 80s, there were theme bands that were just knocking out horror stuff. Yeah. And if you dig surf music, you can listen to the Ghastly Ones or Satan's Pilgrims or there's some others that I can't think of right off the top of my head.
Those are the first two that really pop in my head. There's a lot of surf crossover on that stuff too. But the music aside, yeah, steer clear of anything other holiday related and just keep focusing on cool horror themed Halloween music. Are there any Thanksgiving themed songs? There are.
I've gone down this road because I used to work with peoples that were like, well, they wouldn't even play anything Halloween, but like the second it would enter into November, they'd start cranking out Christmas. I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Quit screwing over Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving needs a whole month of buildup at least. Or those three weeks leading in.
You need Thanksgiving songs. I want you to quit just overshadowing Thanksgiving with your dumb Christmas. Thanksgiving isn't a big retail holiday. We all know this. That's why they push Christmas so hard.
The minute it even gets slightly close... To the end of the year. There's already Christmas shit out now. Oh yeah, there is. It's been for weeks.
They are quick to push the Halloween stuff out and then quick to push Thanksgiving out and get right into the Christmas season. Because that's when the money's made. And that's when the stress comes about. That's when everybody goes broke. To buy crap for people that they don't need.
That they probably don't want. Yay for holidays. Yay. Another pair of socks. Thanks.
Just fine. Hey, hey, hey. Socks are awesome. Yeah. Well, I mean, you want socks.
You want awesome socks. I do want awesome socks. I'm talking about like, you know, the socks you get from, you know, Aunt Bertha. The socks that don't necessarily fit. Or they don't have a designated heel spot.
I fucking hate that. It's like literally just like... It's a tube. It's sewed across the bottom, but then there's like no like. It's not even rounded.
It's just flat. Or it has like... If you have it inside out, it has just squared off. Yeah, it's just square. And it has like these little like...
Where the thread still sticks out. Like, you know what I'm talking about. Yeah. It's a nightmare sauce. I posed this on a previous Thanksgiving themed episode.
So we're jumping the gun a little bit. But just for your purposes... I threw out the theory that Home for the Holidays isn't actually a Christmas song, but should be considered a Thanksgiving song. Because nowhere in there does it mention Christmas, Christmas trees, any of that nonsense. Could just be the holiday.
It's all about holidays and being stuck in traffic and going to eat food, which I'm like, that's all Thanksgiving. Yeah. Food is my favorite part of most holidays. It's just Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie. That sounds like Thanksgiving to me.
Yeah. So quit stealing songs and shoving them in the wrong holiday, because this one, I'd say, is a Thanksgiving song as you drive to go be with your family and be tormented by them as you eat your Thanksgiving dinner. Which we don't have to do. Usually, yeah, we avoid that mess. That does sound like the both of you.
Yeah. I don't mind. I mean, I don't have to make food, so that's my thing. I'm of the opinion if you have to make food, it's too much trouble, so don't bother. Get yourself like a turkey TV dinner, you'll be fine.
But if other people want to do it, that's up to them. I tell them don't as far as I'm concerned. But if they're already doing it and I get to go get food out of it, I'm fine with that. So that's usually what I do. Some other sucker decides to make food and I'm like, that's your fault.
But I mean, I'll eat it. I don't care. Let me some turkey. I do like turkey. I do like some gravy.
Leftover day. leftover turkey day where you have like that turkey, like the sandwich after like Thanksgiving. Ain't nothing wrong with turkey sandwich. I love that turkey sandwich. It's like the best. The best sandwich like ever.
Which I guess that maybe that because that girl inside the convention, she was talking about one of her questions posed on her podcast that I have forgotten the name of. Said that if aliens came to the world, what sandwich would you make them? I think it would be leftover turkey, the next day sandwich with a little bit of mustard on it. Not like overpowering. It's just a little bit of sprinkle, sprinkle.
Side of some leftover stuffing. Oh, God. I don't like stuffing. What if you drowned it in gravy? No.
I still think the egg roll idea was the greatest thing ever, but nobody wants to back me on this. I like that idea. Thanksgiving egg rolls. I think it's awesome. With mashed potatoes, some green beans, and some turkey.
And you wrap it up in an egg roll skin. You deep fry that motherfucker. And then you dip it in gravy. And I think that would be fucking amazing. I think that sounds awesome.
Keep in mind, I'm also the one who bought the Thanksgiving pizza when they sold it a couple years ago. So my judgment has been considered questionable. But I think it's a great idea. I think Firehouse has a Thanksgiving dinner sandwich. They do.
Yeah, it's got a sandwich that has the fixings of Thanksgiving on the sandwich. I mean, it's no pickle sandwich, but I mean. They can't all be. Thank God. So, yeah.
I don't know. I like enjoying the other holidays. That other one's fine. I tolerate it for a couple of weeks. I just don't need that extended nonsense that kicks in early, so.
Enjoy the other holidays as well. So speaking of talking to people earlier, speaking of aliens, I also assumed that maybe you had been taken over by an alien in some sort of Invasion of the Body Snatcher style thing because you were speaking to human beings today. Which one? Several of them. The ones that you were talking to about the aliens and the sandwiches and shit.
Oh, yeah, those people. I walked off and I was looking at stuff and I came back and you were in the middle of a conversation. With a stranger. Yeah, it was the podcast people. Yeah.
Well, they had Flatwoods Monster stuff and we were talking about stuff and I was all excited. I know. I thought it was great. It's just something I'm not used to. I'm like, whoa, you were in the middle of a conversation.
Meds, dude, meds. There you go. Meds and cryptids. Yeah. You do like cryptids.
I do like cryptids a lot. Have you seen any cryptids? No. No, I've never seen one. I've had people on the show who said they have seen cryptids.
I'm a hardcore skeptic, so do I really necessarily believe in these things? No, but I find them fascinating. That's my thing. And I love all the mythology that surrounds them. I love people's recounting of their stories.
Do I necessarily believe them? No, but I believe that they believe it. So good for them. Do I want to believe cryptids? Much like Santa Claus.
Do I want to believe in Bigfoot? Yes, yes, I do. Kind of more than Santa Claus. More like Fox Mulder. I want to believe.
Yeah, I want to, but you got to show me some proof, too. I ain't just going to blindly buy anything at this point. You got to give me some proof. And I would believe a lot of things that a young David Duchovny would tell me. Yeah, you can have him.
I'll take some young or present day Julian Anderson because damn. Talk about somebody who's defied time. She looks good. Are we talking about the convention now? Yes.
So, other than you carrying on conversations... Oh, I talked to that one guy, too. I know. You've had a couple of conversations with random people. That one guy who went to show my scarf.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You talked to him. What was his name? What was his name? I don't know.
Me neither. I wasn't there. I do know it was Lou Taylor Pucci. He was amazing. I'm just horrible with names.
I love... See, I was surprised that I liked the Evil Dead movie that had him in it, the one with Jane Levy who was not there because apparently she had more important things to do. But I really liked it because I was surprised that I liked it because I didn't anticipate liking it because I'm like, I love the first Evil Dead. The first Evil Dead is amazing. The second one, I mean, I guess some people like the second one better because it's a little bit more fun.
I like the second one better. I like the first one because it's legitimately fucking scary. I like the first one. I mean, if I'm picking one to back, granted, I like all three of those original ones. I think they're great.
I think they're a lot of fun. But if I'm just going to recommend one to somebody who actually likes horror horror, I say the first one. Now, two is fine. so much fun I love 2 but 2 is silly as hell and I'm like there's. A little of that in the first one it's a silly remake of the first. One but yeah it is a total remake of the first one of their own and they're not pretending like it's not like it's exactly a remake of the first one only now they've got a little bit more budget and they can do some cool effects and there are some cool effects that aren't in the other one I give them but yeah I mean it's still it's very silly whereas the first one to me is still super.
Creepy yeah we talked to that guy he seemed super nice and chill he was also in American Horror Story He was the hitchhiker in the 1984 season, which part of that season is like the greatest, it's like my favorite, but then it gets to a point where you're like, what the fuck is he doing here? Like, not that guy, the actor, but like the creator in general, because he goes off the tracks and he never really finds his way back, which is a lot of the seasons of American Horror Story. Lou Taylor Pucci. I don't know if I'm saying his last name properly, but if not, he can come on and correct us. He seemed very nice, so he's invited to come on the show.
But yeah, I really like that remake. If you want to call it that. Technically, it's a sequel, because we even get a weird tie-in at the very end. So, I think that one was really impressive, because. Is it a sequel or more like a reboot?
It's kind of both. Requel? I don't know. It's a... It's real world, a reboot.
Is it a seaboot? Sure. But it's also like a sequel because, I mean, technically, no spoilers for this movie that came out in like 2014 or whatever it was. I mean, they work ashen at the very last second. So like it's definitely meant to be tied into a larger universe and you can call it a sequel.
Now, does it kind of also work like a reboot? Yes, yes, it does. But what I think it does really well, and I think what set that one apart from the original three and from the stuff that's come since then, is like it found a way to make it like kind of grounded, like more than most horror movies, especially something that's like a possession movie or some sort of evil spirit entering your body. And then you're doing weird, crazy things that don't make any sense and would be like, this is this is something out of a horror movie. the thing that I think that does really well is we're dealing with somebody who's going through drug withdrawal. So everything that's going on, they're blaming on the drugs and her weird body freaking out because it's going through withdrawal.
And like all of the things that go on for like a good portion of the movie that normally you'd be like, what the hell is going on with this person? You, Now, all of a sudden, you have an excuse. And, like, so it drags out the believability of this for a long time into that movie that I think is really well done. So, I give it credit for that because later it gets full on horror movie. Obviously, this is crazy over the top stuff.
Or it literally is raining blood. But, yeah, in the beginning, it's still, like, questionable. Like, well, this seems insane, but at the same time, shit is going down with this girl. So, like, what are we doing here? Yeah, I love that part of it.
I think that's the most amazing part, is it finds a way to make something as crazy and over-the-top as Evil Dead kind of something that you would buy in the moment, like once you're faced with it and you have to deal with your friend losing it. So to sort of jump ahead, because normally we'll be like, hey, what have you been watching? On the show, I haven't discussed the fact that I've seen the other ones, because at the convention today, you were asking how many have there been since that one? And there are two since then. So I hadn't watched that.
We call him that one fourth version, I guess when the fifth one was coming out and somebody was like, Hey, you want to go see that fifth movie? And I was like, yeah, no, I guess I should watch the one before that. Not that you need to, but just for my sake of being like, Hey, I want to say I've seen that and I'm watching this one too. So within a span of about eight hours, I ended up seeing both of those last two evil dead movies. How are they?
Do you have any follow-up questions? How were they? Were they good? Yes. You don't seem sure.
And I'm not. They're fine and serviceable as horror movies go. But how are they as Evil Dead movies? Here's the thing. This is the weirdest series ever.
As I went into that one, the one I watched beforehand, and then when I went to the theater and saw the most recent one, and I was just like, sitting in the theater i'm going this is really well made there's good acting it's great effects like everything about it works but i'm like it's so really serious now and i'm like again the first one worked as a serious horror movie and i was fine with that but then you go like two and three are silly as hell then we get kind of a weird. Are you telling me that Army of Darkness is not, like, a serious film? Well, yeah. It's as serious as Three Stooges ever get. With tiny little versions of you running around trying to attack you.
But then you take... You already had a weird sort of serious redo by the time we get to the fourth one. But then, like, these just get, like, more grim. Like. And take themselves relatively seriously.
While still working in the little nods. There's still jokes for the hardcore. Or old school fans. But like. It just is so like.
Not even fun at times anymore. Like it works. It's intense as a horror movie. But I'm just like. Okay.
What are we doing now? So I don't know. They're well made. I liked maybe the fifth one. I think Rise was maybe even better.
Or. Then the most recent was Burn, which is also fun. Again, I think they're both, and they've worked in a different director, which they almost seem like that's become a thing now. Because even the guy who directed Burn said he doesn't want to do another one. He thinks they should all be a new director each time.
And it should just be like, I mean, it's almost an anthology at this point of like, what if we threw in the basic idea of Evil Dead into this scenario? So yeah, I don't know. They're fine. I enjoy them to an extent. But at the same time, I'm like, I just don't know what to do with them.
Because there's also a bigger, more overarching story that seems like it continues as this goes on. Especially, I guess, if you're... I mean, we also jumped over the fact that there's an entire series that happens in the middle of this universe, too. I did love the show. The show was amazing.
The show was fun, but again. The show was awesome. You've got Ash in the middle of it. You know, you put... You put Bruce in anything.
He's amazing. But I still love the other characters, too. Yeah. It's just, yeah. I didn't make it through all of the series, but when I started watching, I was like, this is a lot of fun.
This definitely works if you're like an evil dad. I thought we did. I can't remember what happened. I think they wanted to do more, and it just didn't get picked up again. So it might have kind of left it hanging.
It's been a while since we saw it, but I remember really liking the series. Yeah. I thought it was really well done, too. But that's the thing. You factor that in, and it's even stranger.
But by the time you get to this last couple, it's almost like the dead of Evil Dead title have their own agenda. I don't even know what it is exactly, but they seem like they have a plan. In the original trilogy, or definitely 1 and 2, which are the same movie, they're trying to just get him. They don't seem like there's much more than that. Once they take over.
They're maniacal and evil, and they just want to destroy mostly Ash because he's our punching bag, and that's what he's there for. But basically anybody else around him, they just want to destroy and take over other people, and that's it. But these last two, it seems like there's a plan. They're almost like a collective... which they sort of had that in there. I mean, you know, they always kind of speak as though they're a they, like they're an entity of themselves, and they have some sort of hive mind, I guess.
But they definitely do with these last two. So I'm just like, I don't know what that means. Like, how do I process? What am I doing with this? Like, is it going to make sense somewhere up the line in a real overarching story?
I don't know that I want it to. I don't know. I feel like there's just more of that going on as these last couple have happened, too. That I don't even remember being a thing in the fourth reboot type of deal. It just seems like it was that same mode of the first one there, where these last two, it's like a different thing going on.
But I don't know. I could rewatch them again. I might have a different thing. Do they have any tie-in to Bruce Campbell? There's, again, there's the jokes.
I will, I guess, if you want to call this a spoiler, I don't think you care. Especially because it's so minimal. In the last one, at least, they're walking up the stairs and there's a picture on the wall and it's like family members and one of them is Bruce in like a suit. So it's like, oh, look. So how everyone take that?
Is that Ash? Is that just somebody else in the family who looks like Bruce? I don't know. So that was cute. You know, if you're a dork.
It's a little Easter egg for you. If you're a fan, it's a little Easter egg for you. If you're a regular old movie goer, then I don't know why you're at that movie because it is very violent. To me, unless you're a fan of horror, at least. I don't know why you would be at these movies because they have gotten continually more violent as time goes on.
So, yeah, I think it would be a little too much for regular old people. But, you know, if you're not, you don't even notice. You just see a picture on the wall. So anyway, I thought I'd throw that in because you ask how many there were. And there are at least two more since then.
And I watched them. I'm sure I'll see them eventually. I'm not like going to make it a priority. They're fine. I liked them.
They're well made. Again, they're really good directors each time. It's just, I feel like it's diminishing returns for me as a viewer. But again, maybe that's just me. I know some people liked, definitely I feel like Rise had pretty good buzz about it.
Burn, I feel like I didn't hear as much good stuff. So I don't know. But they were all fine. Obviously I didn't hear too much or I wouldn't have had to ask you how many there were. Yeah, well, that's the thing.
Like, I hadn't even gotten around to the rise of it by the time Burn already came out. And I was like, I knew about Rise. I was like, yeah, yeah, eventually. I just didn't feel like it at the time, and I put it off. And next thing I knew, I was like, oh, look, there's a whole other one already.
So, I don't know. Sometimes the continuing on just sort of gets away from you. Yeah, they had quite a few people from, like, I guess from many of the different entries into the Evil Dead series. Yeah, there were a lot of them. They were doing big reunions and people were there getting posters signed with 10 different names on it.
Yeah, Ted Ramey was there. Sam Ramey was there. Sam was there. That was the one I was. Was Ted Ramey still there?
I thought at one point Ted canceled. Okay, maybe he was. But there was that third random brother. Ivan. I don't know who Ivan is.
I wish him well. Seemed like a nice guy. Looked like he was definitely their brother. I don't know. He definitely looked like a Ramey.
He was sitting at a table. I saw him. All by himself. But yeah, that's the one I was surprised. I was afraid if anybody, like Sam Raimi, would end up canceling because he's got a gig or something.
But he was there. I didn't bother. I mean, I didn't see him. Well, I didn't bother this time because I, a couple of years ago, went and got. So I made a whole extra trip just to go stand in line, which it was a hell of a line.
And I got myself an Evil Dead poster signed. So I gladly got one of those. and thought he was very cool. I had a brief 60 seconds tops that I spoke to him, but he was very nice. That's 60 seconds more than I've had. Yeah, I was glad to have that maybe 60 seconds, but yeah, he had a hell of a line and was very nice.
Other than that, let's see. What other fun stuff did we have today? Well, some people got carried away. Who? It might have been you.
Me? Planned I think I eventually was titling it like Nerd Blackjack. Once they would come out with cards and they'd be like, 13. You'd be like, hit me. Give me the card.
They'd be like, give me. I don't even know the purpose of these things. Look, it's Nerd Blackjack. I don't even know the purpose. I mean, I know it's a game.
I like the pictures. They have, I guess we should sort of explain. They have cards and they have like special artwork with. characters from horror movies and actors sometimes. I think mostly it's characters though. Brian said it was like Magic the Gathering.
Kind of. But do you actually play a game? I think you do. I think it actually plays like Magic the Gathering. But a lot of people are just collecting them just because they're like collector's cards.
Collect the whole set. I gotta get them all. Different booths had different cards they were handing out. Just horror Pokemon. I gotta get them all.
Yeah. I think it was for a lot of people. I am a sucker for free shit. Well, I know that. I'm assuming people that have been listening for a while probably know that.
I will be in line for that free shit. I can't help it. I am not ashamed. Free shit is my favorite. So, yeah, I will be there.
And you were. I was. Because you were tracking down cards at every table. People were giving you special secret cards that other regular people didn't even know about. I was running people over.
Elbowing kids in the face. Well, that's a pretty normal day for you. Yeah, it is. You also picked yourself out a new lamp. Because of that skin face.
That lamp was looking at me. Somebody out there. We thought they were just carrying one around for fun, but they were carrying a lamp that had a shade made out of human skin with a face still on it. Hell yeah, it did. We're going to pretend like it was fake, but I don't really know.
Could have been a real human skin lamp shade. I don't know. But then later we saw somebody selling them. Again, that doesn't negate whether they were real or not. Doesn't mean they weren't authentic.
They might have been, but they were also selling them. They were getting their dead bodies in bulk. I mean, you got to do something with that. What, are you just going to let them lay around in your backyard? That's wasteful.
Yeah, you got to use all of the whale. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Use the blubber, use the bones. You know, you got to make use of all of the whale. So these are random people that wandered into their yard, I'm assuming.
You got to make use of that stuff. We also saw several carries. I guess because of the new show. Is it a show or a movie? It's a show, and I've heard it's pretty good.
So yeah, I'm interested in it. I just haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm in the middle of another show, so that's a whole other episode. Go listen to that if you want. A long list of shit that I'll eventually get to. But at least two of them were Carrie in the dress covered in blood with a bucket hanging above their head as they were walking around the whole time.
Yeah, that was amazing. I was pretty impressed with the world. The bucket and then there was red yarn pouring down upon her. That was pretty amazing. That one and then the other girl had a smaller bucket but it had red like the I don't know, like tutu stuffings.
What's that material called? Taffeta? Not taffeta. Tool? Something like that, yeah.
It was that fancy little mesh stuff. So she had some of that falling down on her head out of the bucket. That was pretty fun. I think I was most impressed by Power Loader Girl. She was pretty impressive.
Her and the alien were both really rowdy. That was pretty funny. She was maybe, what, like 10, 11 or so? She was pretty young. But she had taken nothing but cardboard boxes. crafted herself the power loader that Ripley's walking around in from Aliens and like painted it like it was fully painted.
It was all around her and like she was walking in it robot style. Is there any other way to walk in that? I mean, I feel like she was putting effort in though because she stopped and looked at something and then she went back to walking and she specifically started doing like the robot walk. I was like, look at her committing. Good for you, kid.
So she was hanging out, kind of had the outfit on. She was wearing like a white t-shirt so she was pretty close to Ripley. And then she had whoever was with her, we're going to pretend like it was like her brother or whatever, that had a xenomorph alien outfit on as well. So he was hanging out with her. So I thought that was pretty damn impressive.
There was an awful lot. I mean, not an awful lot. There were several, like, again with the cryptids. I saw several cryptid characters there today. I mean, I know I saw at least one of the.
I saw a math man. A moth. It's a new cryptid. It's horrible. Oh, my God.
He helps you with your homework, though. No, it's the scariest thing ever. He throws math problems at you. And you're like, I don't know the answer. I saw a Wendigo.
Yeah. Yeah. Not the busty, slutty Wendigo. No, not the slutty Wendigo. That was a mannequin of some sort, but she was very busty.
Yeah. Cleavage. I saw two Wendigos. Yeah. And I saw one moth person.
You didn't want to do properly. I mean, we don't know. It was a girl. We say mothman, but is it really a man? Mothladies?
Moth, they, them? It could be androgynous. You don't know. I mean, moths might do that kind of stuff. I don't know.
I haven't really dug into the biology of moths. I don't know how they work. It's a moth person. Yeah. We don't know how they identify.
It's like I'm not even a moth. Damn it. But yeah, one moth person. And two wendigos. Two wendigos.
It's like you need a bingo card. You know, I didn't see a Flatwoods monster there. That one's underrepresented. Yeah. It's true.
I've seen one person dressed as Flatwoods monster. Hmm. And maybe a Bigfoot. Could have just been a hairy dude. I don't know.
Couldn't tell. We saw Roger Rabbit. That's true. And Jessica. Yeah.
Saw Shrek, Fiona, and Or Farquaad. Which I was trying to figure out, was there somebody there from Shrek? I was confused. The only thing I was thinking is there is a new Shrek coming out. So maybe they're just gearing up for the new Shrek.
I don't know. Because Shrek will never die. No matter how long it's been, they're still working on some new either Shrek or Shrek spinoff of some sort. Yeah, and there's always the kids that are dressed up from the new whatever animated kind of horror... themed cartoons. I saw several Five Nights at Freddy's.
Yeah, I did see several of those. And there were some other new kind of stuff that I have no idea my kid would know. I still think none of them we saw today came anywhere near, near the girl we saw that one year who was Nadine from Twin Peaks with the eye patch. That was good. We took a picture with her, if you remember.
Did we? I'm pretty sure you did, at least. I don't think I did. I remember talking to her and saying her Costume was amazing, but I don't think I took a picture with her. I thought maybe you did.
I don't think I did. If not, you should have. She was impressive. I don't think I was fully medicated at that point. I spoke to her.
That's pretty impressive right there. We also saw a dude walking around with a basket. and a little creepy dude climbing out of it. A basket case. Which, once again, I was like, oh, look, basket case. And then later I saw a table with somebody selling them.
So I was like, was he just walking around advertising them? Full on basket cases. Did he bring his own? Because I feel like his basket looked different. So I was like, did he just coincidentally bring his own basket case guy?
Okay, did he have baskets full of basket cases or cases full of basket cases? This is overcomplicated. He had baskets of basket cases. But not cases full of basket cases? Yes.
He had a cask. How does one package their basket cases? In baskets or in cases? In a drum. Industrial drum of basket cases.
Caskets. That was fun though. We didn't constantly go, hey, what's in the basket? We should have. We did have, and again, I'd like to just say that I feel like I should get a little credit.
I've shown some restraint. I wasn't that guy, which there's an abundance of that guy at any convention you go to. But for a minute, I just told you about it to get it out of my system. Oh, yeah, I know. As we were standing there, and we're in the same state where the movie, The Return of the Living Dead, takes place.
Spoilers, I guess, if you haven't watched The Return of the Living Dead yet. But also, it doesn't really factor in. It's just at some point they name drop Louisville. So. Many's a time in the city of Louisville I've heard this story.
And now we were close enough, I guess, that some lady walking by stopped at a table to tell the guy behind the table, I think because he had something sitting on the table from Eternal Living Dead. And she goes, well, you know, now they shot some of that movie in Louisville. And I was like, I'm sitting there going, no, they didn't. No, they didn't. And, you know, like I was telling Brian, if you lived around the Highlands, everybody was always like, they shot it at Cave Hill Cemetery.
And it's like, no, they didn't. Blah, blah, blah. And that's the people. I heard that a long time ago. And I actually thought the same until the Internet came.
And information that you could freely look up and see that, no, it wasn't shot there. It's all in California. It's all in California. Yeah. It takes place there, but it wasn't shot there.
I mean, one of the guys writing it had a connection to Louisville, and that's why it got named that. But people will still swear. Oh, yeah. They will swear it was filmed there. Which is weird, because if you watch it, nothing looks like it.
No. Like, I've seen things that have been shot in downtown Louisville. Yeah. But you know how stubborn people are. It doesn't look anything like that.
People are stubborn. They're like, well, I don't care. I'm still going to tell people it was shot there. Well, you're going to be wrong. You are definitely wrong.
Just like the Jug. Just like, yeah, the Jug. Well, that guy's dead now, so he can't go around making that up anymore. The Jug in Bowling Green was where Leonard Skinner were when they wrote the song. Yeah.
Yeah. Give me three steps. Yeah. Yeah, he tried to tell everybody that. I said, well, my girlfriend looked it up and actually...
And you're stupid. The jug isn't... Where is it? I don't remember. Is it in Alabama or someplace?
Anyways, it's not in Bowling Green. And he said, I don't care. I'm going to tell people that because that's where I think it happened. And I'm like, well, I mean, it doesn't make it true, but whatever. You're still wrong, but feel free to continue being wrong publicly.
Yeah. So... Do we want to address a very special occasion that's fallen upon today? My birthday! Yes, it is Misty's birthday, birthday, birthday, birthday, birthday, birthday.
I don't know if we've ever actually recorded on your birthday. We never have. Because you're usually doing other crazy things. Nope. We just didn't have a lot of money, so this is it.
I threw it out there just checking to make sure and you didn't go, hell no, I got birthday stuff to do. And I was like, oh, I guess then we're back on track. For the old convention. Fisty's like, we're poor. Well, then we don't know if we're going to go because there's a convention in December we might go to, but I don't know if we're going to.
No, I think we are. We're working on it. Yeah. It was like, we're going to go do a big thing, like go to West Virginia and go to, again, the Mothman Festival. Well, of course.
Not the festival, the museum, sorry. Yeah. The festival's already happening. Well, originally, we had originally planned on going to an abandoned sanatorium in Pennsylvania, but with the price of gas and the price of everything being fucking high and everything going up except for your paycheck, we kind of had to scale it back, so we were thinking... Maybe West Virginia.
And then you found something the other day. I did. I found one in my very own beloved state of Indiana. So we're going to go to the, what's it called, the Indiana Sanatorium? The Indiana State Hospital.
Where you will be committed. Which we didn't even know existed. To what, Rockville, Indiana? Rockville, Indiana. Yeah.
So if we're never seen again, that's where you need to go look for us. You will be locked up. Yeah. Sanitarium, as you should be. Yeah, I think it's still kind of fairly new.
The guy, I think they opened it to the public maybe four or five years ago. When you say new, you mean as an open to the public. Not like a facility. No, the facility, I think, uh, when did they open it? When they say it was open 1908.
I don't remember. I didn't do my research properly. It's not super, super old, but it's still during the time of tuberculosis. So it started out as Indiana's prime tuberculosis center. And it is literally out in the middle of nowhere.
It's out in the woods. Um, And then it operated as a tuberculosis center or hospital. 1908 to 1968. 1968. And in the 70s to...
1976. 1976 to, what is it, 2011? Yeah, the state operated as a nursing home and private mental hospital in 2011. Yeah. And then it finally shut down.
It sat abandoned for.... I forgot how many years before the current owner bought it and started renovating it, but you can either drive up there for free, you're not allowed to get out of your car, or for $ 25, you can roam the entire property and go anywhere you want. Granted, you have to sign a waiver, but still. And they have guided flashlight tours, and the month of October, they have haunted tours. Dun-dun-dun!
Yeah. So again, if you haven't heard before, this is the kind of stuff these two like to do. I love that shit. I love going to any old hospitals, sanitary, like asylums, uh, prisons. Oh my God.
Yeah. Any of those places. We don't go to ones that are like, we don't do like urban exploring thing. Like you're not breaking into places. No, I don't want to get climbing around empty malls and shit.
No, I don't want to do that. Cause I mean, look, all that's cool. And when I was younger, I did dumb stuff like that. Um, but allegedly yeah yeah allegedly uh but now i mean you know you run in the danger of asbestos and all. Kinds of well there's no guarantee there's not going to be.
Asbestos well you know what i mean uh that and uh things that are structurally you know unsound and stuff things you don't think about when you're young but then when you get older you're like well you know i kind of don't want to become a permanent resident in this uh. I mean, I can't call you out because there's definitely a time when not only I did this, but if I still had a working VCR, I have a videotape that my friend and I, who both decided, dorks that we are, we got video cameras, and started videoing the dumb stuff we were doing at the time. You're leaving behind evidence. One of which, well, again, like Blair Witch style, we needed somebody to find the tape and know what happened to us.
So basically, I don't even remember where the hell we were supposed to be going. I think we knew that there was some like old house off off the side of the road if you drove like an hour outside the city. So it's somehow we ended up going through this property back to this big old house. It was I guess the door was like open. I don't remember us like opening the door.
I think it was just the door was open because we went inside it. We went upstairs and. The entire floor was rotted through, you could see from the upstairs down into the, and I'm like, thinking back on that now as the pretend grown-up that I am now, I'm like, yeah, we could have fallen through and died, so that was pretty dumb, and yet, did I think that at the time? Nah, I thought it was pretty awesome at the time, so. Yeah, I did that kind of stupid stuff, too, and had video evidence of it.
Yeah, I didn't have video camera, so. But I don't think it was anybody's house anymore, so I don't think I even have to worry about them being outside. I mean, my grandma used to do that shit. She would go in, like, abandoned houses and, like, look for shit. Like, I have a mirror that she took out of an abandoned house that I am pretty sure.
See, I'm a skeptic, but I think there's something in that fucking mirror. I mean, I've seen Oculus. Me too. I thought that mirror is hiding behind a door where it can't get me. Because it can't get you.
Yeah, it's facing the wall. Behind a door with a door stopper so it can't, like, squeak its way out, you know. Because it'd try. I don't know why I wanted that damn mirror so bad. It's like, it scared me as a kid.
I would run past this mirror. Because it was going to reach out and grab you. And Grandma was like, well, is there anything you want? I'm like, I want the mirror. I was like, maybe the mirror put that thought in my head and I had no option other than to take it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's going to take over your mind. Maybe I didn't trust anybody else to have possession of it. That's true. Maybe.
They would use it for the wrong reasons, which kind of you probably would, too, if you could figure out how it works. I figured out how to use it. If I could dial in properly. But yeah, it's love and hate that mirror. I'm terrified of that mirror.
So my original extra tie in. Not only is it your birthday. Do you know who else's birthday it is today? Kevin Kline. In addition, because I didn't know this one.
Well, I don't know. I just there was one I found out today and I went, huh, is that true? And then I double checked. I'm like, yep, that's true. It's also John Kassir's birthday.
I'll be damned. The Crypt Keeper himself, who was in the building we were just at. Well, if you would have told me, I'd have been like, hey, dude. I was going to, but then he had people there, and then we didn't walk by. When we walked by the first time, he had people, and I was like, well, we can't interrupt him.
Well, maybe later if he's just hanging out, but then we didn't go back by later, so. Oh, well. Happy birthday, John. Hey, Kevin Clyde. We met him very briefly years ago, and he seemed very nice.
Happy birthday to all. He seemed super cool. And I, man, those old school, That first couple of seasons of Tales from the Crypt, I was a sucker for those. I haven't revisited them, but they were pretty amazing. Kevin Kline's amazing because he's almost 80 and still married to Phoebe Cates.
I mean, she has not come to her senses and run away. Wait, what? He's married to Phoebe Cates? He's married and has been since 1989. I didn't know he was married to Phoebe Cates.
I never even thought of who Phoebe Cates is even married to. That lucky bastard is how you put it. But, yeah, I was all into some old school Tales from the Crypt. Slash was on an episode. That show in general was fucking amazing.
Yeah. I feel like the later seasons, I only, because at some point I had moved and I didn't have cable myself because I was poor once I moved. So, like, all the early ones I saw, like, every week I was there. I was taping them like a dork. Like, I was watching them all.
Then later I think I moved and I had a stupid job and I was missing half of them. So, like, I came. I know. It's stupid. But I was watching them sometimes as I would catch them.
And I feel like the later seasons, it's like it didn't have a point anymore. Because like the whole, it's basically Twilight Zone set up, you know? It's like they always have a weird twist at the end. That's how it works. And it's like it's always a mean, cruel twist because it's horror.
And that's the thing. And I feel like there were several episodes in those later seasons that we'd get to the end and it would just sort of end. And be like, but what's the. What was the twist? What did we learn?
What was the point? Yeah. Who learned the lesson the hard way and died in the process? Probably like there's, there's, there's always like a cool ending to the old ones. And I feel like that went away.
I think they just ran out of good ideas. I don't know, but yeah, I, at some point would like to go back and watch the whole series again, but I have not done that anytime recently. I can't remember. Somebody told me, or I heard it somewhere that at the time they would film two different versions. Of, like, every episode.
One for TV and one for... Yeah, one for TV and one for, like, syndication. Or one for, like, cable TV and one for syndication. Yeah, because it was, like, HBO originally, so they could show whatever they wanted on there. So they had to, like, film, like, almost two complete versions of every...
I'm not sure if it was every episode, but ones that had more, like, HBO-worthy things that they wouldn't be able to show on, like, regular syndication channels or whatever. So. Yeah, because later I think it did get picked up by like regular TV cable. That way you could put the fairy godmother in there. Hand me the keys, you fairy godmother.
I remember that. That was a classic. But then I was looking through. I was like, here's extra tie-in. You know who did cinematography on one of those episodes?
Dean Cundy. There you go. The man I went to see today. So you know you're a dork when you're there. Not for, you know, fabulous actors and whatnot, but a cinematographer, you're an extra level of dorky.
And that was me. He was weird because there weren't a lot of people in his line, but the people that were in his lines had like a bajillion things. They had like wagons. Well, a lot of them were doing like that, what's it called? Um.
Where you buy stuff online and one person goes and buys it all for a lot of people. Yeah, who goes and gets everybody to sign. It for you. Not consignment, but. Autograph mule?
Maybe. That's pretty much what it sounds like. And sometimes they do a lot of, I don't know with this one, but sometimes they also will have somebody do a bunch of stuff for charity and they sign a whole bunch of things for... Because they used to do that with some of the other shows I know. So I don't know if they were doing something like that with this as well.
This is all for charity. Yeah you never know my charity that's why I was just like I just want one thing for me so can I get in this somewhere and thankfully they were done so I was like yes but yeah if you're not familiar like everything awesome that's ever been filmed usually if it had a good budget it was filmed by Dean Cundy so and I was going back he's got some old school like horror stuff let's see the witch who came from the sea creature from Black Lake Satan's cheerleaders. Like, he did some cool stuff in the old days. But then you fast forward, like, 1978, Halloween. He is the director of photography on Halloween.
He did Rock and Roll High School. He did The Fog. He did... Escape from New York. He did Halloween II.
He did The Thing. He did Season of the Witch. He did Psycho II. Electric Boogaloo? Sure, if you want it.
He did, oh, look, Romancing the Stones. See, this is when we start getting the extra crossover, because that, Romancing the Stones, you're Robert Zemeckis. So then a few years later, Back to the Future. He is director of photography on Back to the Future. Director of photography on Big Trouble in China.
Who framed Roger Rabbit. So yeah, he's just back and forth between John Carpenter and Robert Zemeckis. I'm not really sure that I know what a director of photography does. I mean, the reason it looks good is director of photography. The director is there, and we give the director credit for everything, basically.
But the director is there for the whole show. They're there for... making sure everybody's in the right place. They're ready for story arcs. They're ready to work with the actor and make sure the actor is, you know, doing what they need to do, but not necessarily the, I need to set up this lighting to make sure the shot looks right. That becomes the director of photography.
So their final say, they're supposed to come in and look and make sure everything looks right the way that they want it to be because they're the overall, you know, in charge of everything. But the real like hardcore work that's being done to make sure that shot looks good is the director of photography. Yeah. It's all the visuals. Yeah.
It's the reason it looks as impressive as it does if you get a good director of photography. The kind of person who, I don't know, is director of photography of Jurassic Park. Because that's also Dean Cundey. Yeah. He's pretty damn amazing.
So he's responsible for making Jeff Goldblum look good? I mean, I think Jeff Goldblum came out like that. He's maybe the one that went, how about if we open his shirt in this scene? So all of us must be thankful to Dean Cundey. And everybody on the set went, why would we have his shirt open?
He's like, shut up and open his shirt. Just do it. Just look at him. Trust me. He's a god.
So, yes, he was very cool. And I just had, once again, one moment to talk to him. So I said, is John Carpenter, like, enjoying himself back in these movies? Because I had a photo of, like, them hanging out on the set of The Fog. And it's just John standing there looking like he always does.
Not winking at me. Not winking at you, which is an old episode. You'll have to go back in time if you want to hear her tales of being traumatized by John Carpenter winking at her. Whereas if 1970s John Carpenter winked at me, it would have ended a whole different way. I still theorize that he was still a cranky old man even back in the 70s.
But yeah, he said he was doing all right back then. He was still having fun and he said he would, you know, He would smile sometimes, and he's even heard him laugh a few times. Crazy talk. Just a few times. So he had a good sense of humor, too.
He was playing along with my cheesy question. So, yes. Dean Cundey. Very cool. And I specifically had to swing by just to get a glimpse of Megan Lawless.
You're not even familiar with her work, but what do you say? She's pretty damn cute. She's pretty damn cute. Come on, now. That chick is gorgeous.
So. I am interested to see where she goes. I know she's got, I mean, they just, everybody involved in that movie blew up. I mean, it took over the industry. So it'll be interesting to see where she goes.
Because, yeah, Obsession was out of control and made so much money for a minimal budget. So now we're going to see a million knockoffs of it is the sad thing because nobody learns the right lesson from those. Not like let's, have faith in this up-and-coming filmmaker and give them a decent budget and let them do their thing and not get in the way and make a bunch of stupid decisions. They don't ever learn that lesson, no. They're always like, let's make a bunch of copycats of that same stupid thing.
I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's not, no. It was good because it had a good script and this director knew what the hell he was doing and he had a great cast, so. But anyway, yeah, I looked, she's got at least three things in the works right now, so it'll be interesting to see how this pans out and if she, like, Gets to go on and do... Because, again, she's not really the lead in that.
Although, again, no spoilers, but the dude that's in love with the other girl, sometimes I'm like, man, dude, she's right there. What are you doing? Look, look right there. Your friend. Look at her.
So, I don't know. I questioned our main character's judgment a lot of times in that movie, but mostly about that, first and foremost. But, yeah, she seemed pretty cool. We did not get to hang out with her, but... Future plans.
But we did see most of the cast of Cabin Fever, which, if nobody got their nose, I fucking love that movie. It is a classic. I mean, there's so many things. It's just amazing. I mean, it's art cinema at its finest.
I'm gonna go shoot squirrels. Why? Because they're gay. I'm sorry, that's so stupid. I mean, it does seem like what some dumb redneck kid would say, so...
It's not too far off from the real world. We had most of the original cast there, except for, like, Ryder Strong. Yeah, he's got, like, real gigs these days. He's another nerd with a podcast. Who doesn't have a podcast?
But theirs took off all of a sudden. Like, once she went on her Dancing Around with the Stars show, like, they blew up even more. Like, they already had a huge following. But, like, she got, like, three new shows out of it. And they had six spinoff shows.
And, like, they're starting their own network now or whatever. I don't know. They're out of control. So, yeah. I remember when they were just three dorks on a podcast, but now they're all successful and whatnot.
He doesn't have time to do conventions. We did walk past Michael... I can't even say his fucking name. We walked past Michael Ironside. He kind of looked like Michael Ironside.
I didn't look at his table to see if he had pictures holding the gun like he normally does in a movie. Oh, yeah. I didn't think about that. I thought about that when I walked by. I was like, Michael Ironside.
And I was like, Michael Ironside is the reason why I've always wanted a Mac 11. And I think it was mainly from the TV show V. But I didn't want to tell Michael Ironside. The only reason I wanted a Mac 11 was because he had one in V. Speaking of V, when are we going to get fucking Mark Singer at these conventions?
I've seen him. You just didn't go that far. I didn't. God damn it, Mark Singer. I'm waiting for you.
One of these days. He just needs to branch out and come a little further this way. He was supposed to one year, wasn't he? Yeah. I think it was COVID year, wasn't it?
It was. Is it one more reason that COVID shut down the world? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just to spite you, I think. Yeah.
See, I didn't look. We should have seen if he had Turbo Kid. He needed like the weird eye patch that he had in that Turbo Kid movie. Turbo Kid, yeah. Turbo Kid was fun.
I was not expecting to be as impressed with Turbo Kid as I was. Forgot about Turbo Kid. Turbo Kid was fun. It was a throwback even more than I expected it to be. Kane Hodder was there.
We never see him. I don't know, man. I don't get it. And they hit this line wrapped around the corner. And I'm like, who hasn't seen Kane Hodder?
I don't understand. If you've ever been to a convention in your life, you've seen Kane Hodder, right? Like, I don't know. Tom Adkins was there. Yeah.
I did hear him yelling at somebody. Just that one guy, because he didn't get in the picture. He was like, you, get over here and be in the picture. He was just directing. He was doing the directing job.
Oh, and the other guy was there. I can't remember his name. Lively? Bill Moseley? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Rusty. Yeah, that's Rusty. I was like, hell yeah, dude. Bill Moseley was not Rusty. He's in European Vacation and in Night of the Creeps.
Is that right? Yes. Yeah. He was in both. So, yeah.
Both those movies I liked. The most overlooked Rusty ever. Yeah. He was my favorite Rusty. That's kind of crazy talk.
You probably should have told him that. I'm sure he would be the one to hear that. Well, yeah. He was my favorite Rusty. The first movie was okay.
I guess everybody really likes the first one. And my favorite has always been European Vacation. And I guess because it was on TV... And it was the one that played the most on TV, and so I always watched it. I mean, not shortly thereafter, because now it's another one that plays constantly.
Yeah, yeah. On a loop, literally, a certain day out of the year. Yeah, now, I didn't even watch that one. Again, this one was at a certain, it just, it hit at a certain time period in my life where I wasn't doing anything. I hadn't started skating yet.
Just sitting at home watching European Vacation. Just sitting at home watching European Vacation because that's what came on TV. And yeah, so I thought this is awesome, you know, to be able to go to Europe and go on vacation would be cool. And you started entering game shows? No, no, we went to Asia.
No pig in a poke for you? No, we didn't go to Europe. We went to Asia. So it was quite the opposite of European Vacation. Did you meet any of the cast of Monty Python while you were in Asia?
No. Oh, boo. I did meet a French guy who could not speak English or Thai and was completely lost in... Oh, where were we? Chiang Mai.
So, yeah, he was... He was in Chiang Mai and couldn't speak English. Couldn't speak... Thai, and was completely lost. What could he speak?
French. I don't know. If that's going to get you very far. I think if he had just gone to Vietnam, he may have went to Vietnam for a while, because I think there's some French speakers in Vietnam. Yeah, I mean, France was there for like seven years at some point, so I bet somebody learned French.
I think eventually he found somebody, because unlike the British, the Thais got along with the French, but they didn't get along with the British. Everybody gets angry at the British. Well, I mean, if you're familiar with The King and I. Et cetera, et cetera. The movie that didn't happen, for real, for realsies.
I saw it. It totally happened. Yeah, you know. Neil Brenner's awesome. Yeah, yeah.
He is awesome. The English King. Yeah, that movie's banned in Thailand, by the way. I don't know if it's still banned, but as of when I was over there, it was banned from Thailand. But yeah, so I don't even know what any of that had to do with anything.
Oh, yeah, the vacation. Yeah. Yeah, we're on vacation. So pay no attention to me and my ranting. Well, while you're ranting, we'll get to the part that we usually do in these episodes and nobody ever has an answer, but I know somebody has an answer.
Have you seen any movies lately? No, but all versions of The King and I are banned in Thailand. Yes. That's crazy talk. No, I have not seen any movies, but Boyfriend has seen things.
Yes, I've seen things. Things that I cannot explain. Things that I. Should not explain. Should not explain.
Things that I cannot remember because I've been hitting him a lot. That's true. No. The 40th? Was it the 40th anniversary?
I don't know. Transformers? Transformers. Transformers the movie. Yeah.
The animated. The animated Transformers. Not the shitty. None of that Michael Bay nonsense. CD, CG stuff.
Yeah. You know, if you like it, that's fine, whatever. That's the thing. I've made peace with it. There's so many of them now.
I never saw any of them. I'll tell you that. I haven't seen any of them. So I can't, you know, people will be like, oh, you can't talk shit on movies you haven't seen. Well, yeah, I guess I can't, but whatever.
I've seen the first one. I was not thrilled with it. I saw part of the second one on regular old TV, and I was like, oh. Yeah. I was just like, this is bad.
Like, I'm sorry, but this is, like, offensively bad. Like. So I didn't go past the second one, except Bumblebee. Bumblebee is actually good because it's not directed by him and it's a whole different take on it. It's a very different movie.
So yeah, Bumblebee actually pretty good. Yeah. So Transformers, the movie animated series came out in the greatest year of my life, which was 1986. I don't know why, but 1986 was the greatest year for me as a kid. And maybe it was because Transformers.
I don't know. There was probably a bunch of other cool stuff that happened in 1986. I can't fully remember. But for some reason, 1986 stands out as just a phenomenal year. But that movie came out.
It was my buddy's birthday. We all, like all the friends, got together. His parents took us to Chuck E. Cheese for his birthday. Yes.
We ate Chuck E. Cheese. And then we went and saw Transformers, the movie. I mean, that's a pretty epic day right there. It was an epic birthday.
I got to have Chuck E. Cheese, pizza, play video games, and then fucking go see Transformers. And then go see... All your favorite characters get slaughtered on film. No!
Well, luckily. Traumatizing. My favorite character wasn't even in the movie. So. I guess I was spared, but then also I was aggravated because my favorite character wasn't in the movie.
It's that cool girl car, right? No, it's Sideswipe. Oh. No, Arcee's in the movie. Yeah.
Great movie. So, 40th anniversary. My buddy that I hang out with, we watch Transformers and He-Man at the skate shop because we're fucking kids. And dorks. Dorks.
Yeah. So.... We're like, fuck, dude, 40th anniversary is coming up. We're going to go. And so me and him went.
It played in probably one of the worst theaters I've been in in a while. I'm not going to make that many anymore. Like most of the new ones are just like regular run of the mill. It's even hard to find a bad one because they've closed down all those. God, this one is like they should have closed it down.
The seating, old seating, sticky floors. This is part of the theater experience. What are you talking about? Yeah, well. This is why I don't like going to the theaters.
You would think, hey, maybe they updated it to surround sound or some shit like that. No. Monosound coming out of one speaker on the left side. Classy. I bet they had those nice reclining seats, didn't they?
The sound was so... No, it wasn't. The sound was low, and it was so low that we could hear the sound from the theater next to us over the movie that we were watching. Uh, but all things aside, it didn't like totally ruin it for us. We were still pretty jazzed that the, you know, the beginning song came up and we're like, yeah, awesome.
You know, it's like kind of like reliving the first time seeing it, but not really because. You're like, ow, my joints hurt. Yeah. You're like, I'm a back, uh, you know, what time is it? I got this movie better hurry up.
Cause I got to. Get to work. Yeah. Can't stay out this late. I can't stay out this late.
But, yeah, we watched it. And then at the end, the guy tearing the tickets at the ticket booth was like, hey, guys, after the movie's over, stay at the end. There's going to be a special, like, thing at the end. That sounds shady already. And I was like, meet me behind the theater.
No, no, no, no. They were like, there's going to be a special, like, thing at the end of the movie. And we were like, oh. After scene. Okay, yeah, like maybe after scenes?
Or maybe they're going to make a new movie. I don't know. Who knows? So, you know, we watch the movie. Movie's great, as usual, even if it was kind of shitty sound, shitty theater, whatever.
Still stoked about the movie. It gets to the end. We watch the credits. And then this other movie pops up. I don't know if it was fan-made or what it was, but it made absolutely no sense.
The ticket guy made it. I don't know if the ticket guy made it or what. Was it like Toy Transformers and he was like stop motion. Animating and going... It was animated.
It was animated. Like a different style? Yeah, it was a little bit newer style animation. This is a spoiler. Well, no, I can't spoil it for anybody because it's out of theaters.
It was only in theaters for like a couple weeks. Did it have Transformers? It had Transformers in it, but dude. I'm just going to fucking spoil it because it sucked. And both me and my buddy looked at each other and we're like, what the fuck was that?
Apparently Optimus Prime is the problem. It's like, okay, here's the deal. It starts out, it shows Optimus Prime and he's floating towards this nothingness. And it's like Optimus Prime, awaken. You know, we're like, oh, oh, wow.
He's in the afterlife. It's Optimus Prime in the afterlife. They're going to, they're going to, give us closure. They're going to heal our childhood trauma. 40 year old wounds.
Yeah, exactly. We're like, Oh my God, he's going to go to heaven and, or, or something cool, you know, robot heaven or become one with the matrix. Maybe that's what it is. He's going to become one with the matrix. And it's like Optimus prime.
You're the source of all the suffering in this world kind of thing. And it's like, you're the reason why all this suffering happens and all this other shit. And we're like, what, what the fuck? And they're like, This cycle, this needless cycle of suffering and death is going to continue. Violence.
Violence is going to continue to happen unless you walk away and forget everything. And we're like, what the fuck are you talking about? It made absolutely no sense. And I think at one point, like, I'm trying to remember because I tried to block most of it out because I was like, dude, this sucked. I think Bumblebee's like, you know, like Optimus is put back on Earth and he ends up going right back to the same place that he's he's at where he's fighting Megatron and then he's not going to fight Megatron.
He's going to walk away. Like pin down or yeah. Bubblebee's like, what are you doing? Optimus shoot him, kill him. And he's like, you know, he's like, not today.
And he walks off. You'll understand. You'll understand one of these days. And we were like, what the fuck? And then the screen is black and the lights come up and everybody in the theater was like, the fuck was that?
Like literally people were like, well, that was stupid and got up and just pretty much ran out of the theater. We were, like, disgusted. Why is Megatron not the cause of all the badness in the universe? That's what I was trying to figure out. Between the two, at least.
I mean, granted, there's a lot of other horrible things in the universe. But, like, if you're between the two main dudes running things, I feel like he's a little more of a bad guy. I don't know. Maybe there was something super profound that was supposed to be happening. But what everybody thought was going to happen didn't happen.
And it went in a completely opposite way. And we were just like, what the fuck are you talking about? So, I mean, it wasn't just me. It was everybody in that theater. because it wasn't just us who said what the fuck it was like a bunch of people in there kind of like all uttered it at the exact same time because it was kind of funny in unison in unison and it was just like screw this and we all got up and walked out we're like whatever. That's really weird and I'm like now was all the theaters showing that or just a weird one off at your theater.
I don't know I don't know unless it's on like okay the movie came back out they re-released it I guess on blu-ray or triple laser disc or whatever they. Have now good old triple laser. Disc that the kids are doing these days watching on their tiktoks and special 3D glasses that stream shit. Cause I'm old. I'm still buying DVDs.
So, uh, yeah, I know. Whatever. So other than that, but yeah, I was kind of disappointed about that. Um, you know, I wasn't super stoked about that. I was kind of like, well, that, that was suck.
And there was some other shitty stuff that was happening at the time. So the movie, uh, while it was good and we were happy, we saw it, we were kind of bummed that it wasn't the, Super extravaganza, like nostalgic experience that we were hoping. But whatever. It was cool. The real question is, did you sing along with You Got the Touch?
No, we don't. I mean, I like the song, but it's cheesy. It is cheesy. But my kid and I went and saw Resident Evil, the new Resident Evil movie. You saw a brand new movie.
We saw a brand new movie. Crazy talk. I am not going to spoil it. But I'm going to say that it is fucking awesome. Like, I went into the movie not knowing anything about it.
Like, zero. Like, I didn't even bother to look up anything about it. I was like, eh, it's Resident Evil. They're probably just going to play the same old shit. No, they didn't.
That's kind of why it's so good. It's so detached from everything. Oh, my God. I mean, it ties to the game in good ways. It ties to the game.
But it doesn't tie to any of the other movies. It doesn't. It doesn't try to do any of that crap. Holy shit. It just does its own thing and doesn't care and keeps on moving.
It's fucking scary. It is fucking hilarious. Yes. It is sad. Yep.
It is like all these emotions wrapped into one. And you start out like, you know, I start out watching the movie, not really liking the main character and not even knowing if he is the main character. Cause you just don't really know. And it, the movie goes in places where you're like, Oh fuck. I didn't even know that.
I didn't even see that fucking happening. What the fuck? You know? Um, but dude, it was, uh, it was really, I will, I will say that I've noticed recently a lot of, A lot of stuff is moving to body horror, which, you know, cool, I guess. If that's what you're looking for.
It's a specific speed of, you know, if you're looking for that one night, maybe not every night. It fits in good with that storyline. Definitely, yeah. It does. But, man, just the way it's shot, just everything about it was, like, me and the kids sat there and watched it.
We were pretty quiet throughout the whole thing. And the lights came up and the credits rolled. And we sat there because we always sit through the entire credits because we always, you know, there might be something at the end. But nothing was on your last time. Yeah.
And we're always the last people sitting in the theater. But I looked at my kid and I was like, did you like that? And she goes, I fucking loved it. I was like, that was awesome. I was like, I liked it.
Like, I like all the Resident Evil movies. I don't think there's any that I really dislike, but I like them in different ways. Yeah, they're a different type of movie. And this one I like in a different way too, but I really like it. It's a good movie.
Again. Legit good movie. Yeah. I mean, I don't know. Did you see it?
Yeah, I saw it. Yeah, I was just like, I was blown away. I was like, holy shit. You know? If you want to hear a full spoilery kind of thing, go back a few episodes because I did a crossover episode with the other guy on CultureCast.
And, like, we dig into it. Like, it is an extended going into all the crazy stuff that we liked about it. Oh, my God. So, yeah. If anybody's looking for that, there's one of those.
Just wait for it. Dude, there is just so much good stuff in it. It is so good. Zach Greger is just impressive. Yeah.
I was just, I was blown away. Um, but yeah, if you haven't seen it, definitely go see it. Um, even if you're not a resident evil fan, go see it. Yeah. I mean, it's still so good.
It's the least, like you don't have to know anything. You don't have to know jack shit. It's just a horror movie. Like you gotta be okay with a decent amount of gore. Cause as it goes on, it is pretty gross.
It gets gory and it touches on shit that I was just like, holy shit, that got dark. Yeah. But it's, done that I'm like if you're okay with that level of horror and gore like it is a good well-made movie and it's a hell. Of a ride it's just yeah I don't think there's any slow parts where you're like. Like it edges its way in at the beginning but that part is so tense and then it just builds the tension yeah by the time you get out of that first third it's just a roller coaster.
Yeah then it's like oh shit it's just like non-stop the whole rest of the movie yeah it's like it's so good it's awesome But I was happy because we got to see it in my kid's old theater that she used to work at, which I wish. She'd... She hates working at the movie theater. But she had a great job. But, you know.
You just talked about how shitty this theater was. No, I didn't. Okay, it was a different theater. I did not. Okay, I thought she worked at that one, too.
No. I thought she worked at. That one first. She works at the good theater. Okay.
No. I thought she worked at that one first. No. Okay. She never worked at the shit theater.
Okay. No. My bad. Yeah. That theater can suck it.
The other theater is awesome. The one that she worked at is new. It is nice. It has reclining seats that work. Welcome to 2010.
None of the seats are torn up. They have fairly small, like they have smallish theaters and they have very large theaters and they're all surround sound stadium seating. So you don't have somebody's big noggin in your way the entire time. the seats are far enough apart that you're not like elbow fighting. Yeah. Elbow fighting each other side to side, or because they recline, you don't have somebody's head in your lap, you know?
Nevermind. Yeah. That's a different kind of theater. Yeah. If you're looking for that, that's out.
That theater closed down. You just got to know where to go. But, uh, yeah, I mean, everything about that theater is great. I love that theater, but, um, Yeah, we had a really good experience. Every movie I've seen there, like, we saw the last Resident Evil there.
Loved it. We've watched Mortal Kombat there. We saw Godzilla. Minus. Minus Zero.
Is that right? Minus Zero? Yeah. It's getting confusing because now there's Minus One coming up. Minus One coming up.
We're going to go see that one because we're both huge Godzilla fans. I specifically... like most nerds downloaded all my nerdery into my kids. So my kids like, like into Godzilla and into mystery science theater and into. You know, it's a shame you couldn't get her into working. Yeah.
You know, that's the, that's the one thing that didn't rub off on her was work ethic, but. I might've referenced you on a recent other episode of crossoverness where we were talking about Godzilla minus zero. Yeah. And was giving, because that's the thing, just talking about not only was it popular in general, but it was a reason to go back out to the theater because someone I know actually went out to the theater to see it. So you and she both went to the theater.
Yeah. When you, again, up until recently, haven't been to the theater a whole lot lately. No, I hadn't. I think, well, the only one, like, the only movies that I've seen Like that I've really gone out to see. Was.
Again. Was. Mortal Kombat. Maya Zero. The Last Resident Evil.
And. The kid and I went and saw. Enter the Dragon. Because they played Enter the Dragon. At her theater.
Or it's not her theater anymore. They do this thing every month. they play old movies there. A lot of those bigger, and I'm surprised because it's like the mainstream chains, but I guess it's just so cheap now because it's digital prints. There's nothing invested in it. It's just taking up a theater one night.
It's a chance to go see the original movies that you saw in the theater again. So it's like this month they're playing Nightmare on Elm Street, Lost Boys, Ghostbusters, Nice. And there might be another one. I can't remember which one was the other one they're playing. But they're playing that all through the month of October.
You know? And I'm just like, holy crap. That's how they should do it. But, yeah, me and her went and saw Full Metal Jacket. And...
You did? I think so. Okay. I thought we went and saw Full Metal Jacket. And...
Era of the Dragon. Maybe we didn't see Full Metal Jacket. Hmm. I can't remember. I want to say I thought we saw Full Metal Jacket, but maybe it was a different movie we saw.
Let's see. People are. Did you leave after he killed himself? Because what's the point of watching the rest of the movie? No.
It's a different movie after that. No. No, we stayed for the whole thing. But people are heading back to the theaters, so that was my takeaway. It was like.
It was. That was one of those first steps, I feel like, was that Godzilla movie made such an impact, it made people who don't even go to the theater go to the theater to see that. Holy shit, that movie was so good. I'm really looking forward to this next one. I hope it's going to be awesome, too.
If they do the same stuff that they did on the last one, I mean, yeah, it's going to be awesome. It's so funny how far removed it is from the original... Godzilla man in a rubber suit stepping on like little cardboard buildings, you know, when I was a kid. Spoiler alert. Um, in case you've never seen a Godzilla movie.
Yeah. The old, the original Godzilla movies, you know, from the seventies. Um, Yeah, it's so far removed from that, but man, it's so awesome. It's so good, though. Once again, just so well made.
And that's kind of the way I felt about the new Resident Evil movie. The same way I felt about Godzilla My Zero. I was like, holy crap. That was awesome! Once again, here's the same tie-in, the same thing I said earlier.
It's like all of those, basically they gave a talented director a lot of reign. free. Reign not necessarily they're still studios but they let them make a lot of decisions and stick to their plan and didn't get in the way. And the fans had a lot of input on it too didn't. They because well because of that it just became a real movie like it became a good story and like it didn't get completely overwhelmed by a bunch of studio nonsense and their involvement and just like just let the you know the director make a good movie and then like you see what happens like the audiences respond to that and like you get a good movie because of that and it's not a bunch of garbage that people complain about i know and it just tanks at the box.
Office it started out i thought it was going to go in one direction like i was like oh i i see where this is going and then it didn't go in that direction i was like oh really i was like holy crap that is awesome. That's the takeaway that I wish they would learn with all of these recent movies we've had that have just taken off. Yeah. And audiences respond to, and they make money. I'm like, you guys are making money.
Just let the talented directors make a good movie and stay out of their way. Yeah. I don't know. We'll see. Hopefully, at least the Godzilla win.
They got enough credit on that last one that they gave them a chance. To do whatever. We're definitely seeing that one. Yeah. I think it comes out, is it November 3rd or November 8th or something?
It's like the first week of November, I think. I've already seen it, because I'll be talking about it, too. Yep. Yeah. Definitely.
Godzilla. Awesome. Now if they'll just make a decent frickin' Ultraman movie, I'll be happy. Everything will be complete. Good luck with that.
That and a kung fu theater. Like a really good kung fu... Never mind. Nobody's going to see that. Oh, I was going to throw in there that the 12-minute short that you saw would be called Optimus Prime Awakening.
Yeah. And it was Peter Cullen's last vocal work. Yeah, I know it's sad. I'm upset about that. Because it wasn't good.
But he was always amazing. I want to say that he was amazing in general. He was always amazing. He was always amazing. I think he died before it actually hit the theaters.
Yeah. So the fact that this is kind of like a tribute to him. Doesn't cover the fact that it sucks. Yeah, I was like, I didn't like it. Does it talk anything about it?
It kind of breaks down a little bit. Kind of an apology to the kids from like the 70s or whatever. Apology for what? For killing off their hero and then this is what you're doing. But that wasn't a good apology.
So let's blame him for it. Yeah, that wasn't a good apology. That wasn't the apology that was needed. They just say it's a weird apology. The strangest apology I've ever seen.
Yeah, it is definitely weird. It almost seemed like they were blaming him. And it's like, you know, is it cause, you know, well, they launched the shuttle, they were coming to Earth, you know, Optimus is the leader, he's the one to blame for everything. You know, it's like, well, even if he wasn't the leader, and somebody else is the leader, they'd still die. So, you know...
Yeah, whatever. Weird. Yeah, it's weird. I'm done with it. That's weird.
I'm not going to put any more energy into that. I just wanted to acknowledge that it was Peter Cullen's last work. That he did. Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I knew that.
Well, we covered the convention. We've covered movies we've seen. In general, fun Halloween leftovers. So I think we got it all. So thank you to Scarefest for letting us come be part of that and have all of that fun because we had a pretty awesome day.
Yay, Scarefest. Yay. So start planning for next time. Go to scarefestweekend.com and you can get your tickets and be part of all that next time around. Woo!
Anything else to pass along? No. Have a fun Thanksgiving. We'll eat a lot of food. I always do.
Keep your weird Christmas music until at least December. And avoid relatives. Go listen to some sort of turkey song. I say all those songs that have mashed potatoes in them because, you know, in the 60s there were a lot of mashed potato songs. So, like, those to me are all Thanksgiving songs.
I'm just claiming them. I'm just going to put my own Thanksgiving playlist together. You do that. Let me know if you guys want one of those. All right.
Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time. Same Geek Feed. Thanks for listening. Bye.
