There are creatures science refuses to recognize. If our urs see it, if our cameras capture it, does it exist? Do you believe? God damn it, Chris, do you believe? It?
Sounds so much cooler than these fucking epp is they're about to talk. I mean, the episode intro sounded better when it was longer. I I it sound it was, it was, It was a better. It was better when they gave the when they gave the conceit of this show a long runway. And now they're just like, do you believe in these creatures?
Quite? Wait? What? What? What?
Creatures from where? Also we have to have the other tag, which is uh, the story is inspired by the possibility that creatures exist. Yes, this is inspired by the theoretical idea of creatures existing. Okay, isn't that every show on Animal Planet? As for this show, this is Scary Stories we tell.
I am your host, Kristash. I am joined by Jess from from from the show from from Life. I am joined by Jess from Existence. Uh. Yeah, we are here in existence.
Yeah. Not joined by Maggie on this Lost Tapes chronicles, which is surprising your take back over for Maggie. We tagged out brother and boy. We were joking about it before we turned the recorder on, but now we're not. We're gonna have to joke about it.
While being recorded on this episode of the Lost Tapes Chronicles, we're talking about the fifth episode of the third season of Lost Tapes. We're talking about a little episode called Devil Monkey. So the utstode came out to October twelfth, twenty ten, and it is about the devil Monkey. So devil Monkey, you may say, what is a devil monkey? Well so, yeah, well, well so the double monkey is a real thing.
In the thirties, in South Pittsburgh, there is a sighting of a creature that leaps across fields with lightning speed. We should say South Pittsburgh, Tennessee. Right, Sorry, South Pittsburgh, Tennessee. I mean looked fair. I mean, hey, yeah, if it was South Pittsburgh, South Pittsburgh might be a different story.
So the people think that they're I guess, kangaroos. But in nineteen fifty nine, the Boyd couple are driving in the mountains near Saltville, Virginia, and an ape like beast attacked their car. So you know, the question first becomes here Jess, tell tell me how this is not as a big foot immediately, right, because you hear simion like creature attacking a car. I think human size, simion like creature, right, I think you think we all think bigfoot? Right?
Yeah? Not bigfoot though. Okay, so if it's not bigfoot, what is it? So? This creature had light taffy colored hair with a white blaze down its neck and underbelly.
It stood on two large, well muscled back legs and had shorter front legs or arms. So yeah, well muscled back legs, yeah yeah, and app and then apparently a couple days later it attacks another car and rips the convertible top off. This is all taking place within the span of a couple of days. And ten years later you have John Greene, who is a researcher. He goes in looks for monkeys in British Columbia, and I guess the creature that he's looking for is similar to the devil monkey.
And then in seventy three, Lauren Coleman, who is in this episode and this is where we're this is where we're going to veer back towards The episode goes to Albany, Kentucky to look into some reports of bushy tailed giant monkeys that are slaughtering live stock, and yeah, classic, yeah, yeah. Apparently rippedins have an EMMA just like serial killers too, I guess. So, I mean that's the thing like where they're slaughtered animals that where they're random car attacks, it's encrypted. So yeah, so you have So the double monkey, I think is kind of a misnomer. I think the episode is making it into something that I'm not going to say that it's not.
But I don't think there's like as specific a name for this. It's just like this is like a catch all term for like a unidentified simion like creature that I guess is too small to be bigfoot, right, I guess what if it is? It a baby big foot? Well that's something like they said it walks on two legs, so right, it's like, well what does that mean? Why I think monkeys?
I don't think Tennessee, you know, like but big foot in Tennessee ran random? But sure? But like, is it what I think of monkeys, ladies, Joe, and I don't think of Tennessee. I do not I think of monkeys often. I do not think of Tennessee.
I don't, yeah, I don't. Do you think of monkeys in Ohio? No? I mean, okay, Actually that's a lot has really lax laws on owning wild animals. So there's a lot of people around the states who own like you know, those wild safari things in the middle of Ohio.
Yes, that happened in Zanesville. Um, something similar to that happened in Zanesville where this crazy guy let loose all of his wild animals to Zanesville, Ohio, which is a very rural, not hugely populated area, but there's still tiger There were you know, tigers and lions and ship running around in Zanesville. Because we have such lax exotic animal laws. So I could see it being something like that, like if they smuggled, like if somebody had smuggled this animal or a couple of them, honestly would have to be at least two of them in order for them to keep going. Um, but it would need to be more than that.
I think I think it needs to be even more than that, right, Yeah, because I mean even we're talking about about you know, breeding and the and breadness of it, which you know, could make it more scary and and that's where we get ry're inbread monkeys. Yeah, that would be terrifying, I mean it, but but I think sure the lady that got her eyes eaten by the chimpoos from Ohio too, I can't remember. That's not the most gnarly part of that story. The most gnarly part of that story is the chimp pulled her hands off, which is like so awful in like the worst My hands just want to like recoil, like when I read that, it's just like, yeah, like it bit her face off. But like to think that a chimpanzee is so strong yank your hands off, You can't comprehend that as a human because like human beings can't do that to one another.
Well maybe maybe like a really strong person, could you have like the strong men competition? Sure, but even still you have to be like like human muscles and strength working in a different way. And then simion muscles and right like even if you build up, we are simming in muscles. Good night. It's a great neighbor of band simeon Us Simon muscles that my my name would be Berry Babboon on the keyboard, Berry Babboon.
That starts playing like the Donkey Kong country theme song Boom boom. Yeah. Yeah. But you know what though, like serious in all seriousness, like joking aside, how is this different than Bigfoot? It's just like a rabbid monkey, yeah, and has a bigot.
It's not a rabid monkey. Bigfoot is a separate, crypted unto itself. But it's an ape ape or simion, ripe or monkey like adjacent, yes, in that in that family, in that world. It's yeah, And I mean what do we class what did they classify like Bigfoot as like an ape? Yeah?
Yeah, okay, so yeah, this this sounds just like a slightly smaller version. I mean, if it's big enough to rip a convertible top off a convertible, it's big, like, it's not small, it's not man sized like all right, oh yeah, so yeah, I mean it could be a baby big Foot, it could, but yeah, it's it's weird. I think this is definitely the grasping at straws. But but it's I think, but I think it's I think they're trying to describe something that's simian without being Bigfoot. Esk, right, because then we're gonna get to that in the next episode.
Right, well, and well that's and that's the thing. It's like you you know, it's close to being that, but it's not that entirely. Does that make sense? Like it's it's a monkey, but it's not a big foot yetti sasquatch type ape. It's like a monkey monkey more to like the monkey you would see in a zoo, like what they show a lot of like in the in the b roll footage and shit like that are like something that's very bad mooing like right, which are non aggressive, pretty fucking terrifying if you saw like a seven like a six foot battery flying at you, like Jess Christ, holy shit.
Yeah, Like well, and I'm I'm Matt. You know, if this thing's ripping a convertible top off, it has to be a bare minimum six foot tall, like right right, I agree, So I could see that being a thing. I mean this also kind of sounds, you know, like every state has some variation of a similar cryptid. It just has a different name, right, Like Mothman and Schupicabra and stuff like that exists in different sort of versions in a variety of different places, right right, Well, swamp ape foulk monster, Yeah, I mean we didn't we do a monkey episode from the first season, there was a big Foot episode. There was like a genuine Bigfoot episode, So, I mean the big Foot episode that was the one where he like he's protecting like the ranger from like poachers.
You remember that, Yes, because Bigfoot's always good, well in Red Dead Redemption, and you shouldn't kill him because bad. You shouldn't kill his family because he'll, like you feel sad about it. Bigfoot's not always good because in that one Bobcat Goldweight movie Bob Bob, but doesn't he like take like forest wives in that movie, like isn't it I believe? So? Yeah, which is like but not not a positive Bigfoot, right, But in the general lore of Bigfoot before yeah, it's usually framed as like a protector of like the forest, right thing, Like you know, like he's not gonna bother you if you're not being an asshole.
Essentially, he's like Santa Claus, is that going to bother you if good people? He's not gonna bother you if you're not bothering him, right, Yeah, But God, let's talk about people speaking of people who bother people. Uh, let's talk about our camera crew. Oh, our Wild Adventurers looking for the Devil Monkey. Yeah.
So it's at F agents going into the West Virginia Forest, so kind of the you know, the area of the world that we've been talking about in the real the realness of the stories, right, and they're looking for a moonshining operation and randomly find a guy that they don't even help. No, they just like leave this core bastard to just hang out, bursting out of the forest like with like blood all over his face, and they're just like, well, you wait here, we'll go see what it is. Yeah, and he's like no, no, no, don't go, and they're like no, we're going though. Look now we're fine, we have guns. Yeah, Like fuck, I don't understand.
Honestly, probably the worst episode I've seen so far, quite honestly, because even like with the character the quote unquote characters of the ATF Agents, they're like, there's not Enigma Corporation, mind you, No, ATF Agents, not Enigma Corporation, which would make sense if they wanted to build that. You don't need a narrative or a lore within this dumb show, but if you wanted one, that's what you would be doing. With it if you wanted one, which we didn't, but you provided one, so now you have to do make sense. But that's the problem. I didn't ask for it.
You didn't ask for it, So why are you providing it? And now that you're providing it, why aren't you doing it to the fullest of your ability? Like, if you're gonna do it, have them in and every exactly serious. Well, especially because every episode this season that I've seen, it's not random people. It's not like, you know, civilians who are camping that discover these cryptids, or it's not a family running away, you know, trying to cross the border.
They're not real they got a fucking video camera. Then they're going on a vacation like that was the Chu picab one, right, And that's like that at least makes sense and it works for the you know, like this happening to random people. But now every episode that I've seen so far is like a professional quote unquote investigation. Right. It changes the dynamic of this show.
It changes it changes the dynamic, it changes the tone. I don't give it, not that I gave too much of a shit about you know, the people and the characters of the first season, but it at least seemed more genuine and at least seemed to make more sense than whatever they're trying to do now, which is incorporate like every major government agency, which is I think, yeah, maybe trying to get some X files e vibes going on, but it's way past the time for that. I mean in twenty ten, yeah, and X files did it better, So I mean, why are you You're not like if you could, if you went with the Enigma Corp. And you went hard with it, like the Smoking Man and X Men, X Men Jesus and X files or whatever, then okay, fine, it's it's not my favorite thing, but at least it's a through line, and I'm like following this story.
But now it's just every government agency happens to appear in one of these things, or it's a group of random like ghost hunters, but it's still an organized group. It's never a random like I was hiking in the woods and I came across this thing and there's no bound footage. Yes, there's no accident. There's no accidents happening. It's all pre planted.
There's no finding of the footage. No, you know, I just rewatched Cloverfield and at the end of that movie, like the camera where it is, I'm not going to ruin the movie. It's been like eighteen years where since the movie came out fourteen years. But where they find the camera makes sense that it's found footage. Yes, Originally with this show it made sense that it was found footage because the way they did it was found footage.
Like we said with the Chuopercabra and other stuff, you have characters who were having I know that, Like you know, Mark Begley talks about this on Wake Up Heavy, like why the hell are you still filming? And that's like a valid question. And like right at this point they're just like hanging a lantern lantern on it. It's like they're professionals with cameras whatever. They're going to have cameras on them at they're going places.
Before it was like they're trying to be creative and now it's just like, you know, what if you want to do that, and you if you want to do that and you want to make it atf age and then give them go pro, give them the you know, security type that it's going to be more messy, you know, and to be honest, none of the effects or anything in this episode, or any of the episodes for that matter, are ever good, and they're really not shown in these episodes. I've noticed it's a lot more say shows up at the end. I mean, yeah, it does plenty of YouTube reaction videos to that when this show is pot This show is popular with a crowd of people that were a little younger than me watching this show. Gotcha okay, because this show came out when we were like eighteen to twenty.
The kids that are making the reaction videos now are like when we were like ten exactly, they were the ones who were scared. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And the first season of the show is kind of scary. But we're at the point now with the show where it's like it's so manufactured. It's super like just you know, the cryptic stories and urban legend stories and stuff like that are all kind of connected together, and that they're always like just normal people that stumble upon a thing they're out or whatever exactly, and that adds, you know, at least some suspense intention to to it, and it also makes it you know, if we have like a full crew of ATF agents going into something I'm not you know, I'm not invested in whatever is happening.
Oh no, like I know, Okay, they're gonna go bust the Moonshinery and then they just discover Devil Monkey and then I guess they all die because that's what happens at all at the end of every episode. Evidently, now, well that's well, now the babe the child survived from the trooper proper. I will say that, I will say that this season of the show is a lot more aggressive with killing people than the last seasons. I mean, as as the show has gone on, the show has gone and I would say more and more aggressive with the way it treats the characters, and the characters that are you know, the ones that you're kind of like, oh, well this is you know, these are the characters that are gonna die and they think, I feel like what this show they telegraph a pretty hardcore in a lot of ways.
But like I mean again, ultimately though, like anything else, I think my my my wish for this show would have been that if they're gonna do something like this with this season of the show, where the show is kind of taking this weird departure from Found footage because even the last season is still more found footage than this. This is just like this is so weird. It's like the Cops or the Dada Dad. It's like an organization sending people in to do something. But it's not even the Enigma Corporation, Like what right?
What like why? Yeah? I don't know. And the problem with the double Monkey thing is, you know, the cryptid itself, it's it's it's not developed enough to carry a story. But the thing is, but like, but that that should allow them to do something with it.
Or what they could have done is they could have done the recreat They could have just told the Devil Monkey story and done recreates the stuff that happened in the thirties and forties, right, which they did with Mothman, where they did a period piece. But then they get into but then but then you get into the whole thing of well, how do you how do you justify that because they don't have cameras, Because they don't have cameras, Yeah, that's fair. The moth Man one kind of got around it because it's like right it to cuss the cusp of it. But I mean that's the problem. My main want for this is if you're going to go this route where you're clearly just trying to do a sort of an anthology horror show at this point without actually calling it that, well, that's I mean again, that's that is the thing that I will say about this show when I'm watching down start uh the show oh eight or oh nine, something like that, we're right or right, And I'm seeing a lot of that in here too in these episodes, and it's like that, you know, the emphasis of the gore and whatever, which is fine, and I like it.
There's part in the next episode I like, but they don't even go The show just doesn't have the budget for what they're trying to do in this season, right, and it doesn't have a strong, strong enough storytelling in it to kind of get over those very obvious trophy things that they're going into right now. Like that, you can tell that they wanted to get more effects heavy and do stuff, and it just they clearly this is the last season, whether or not they knew it was the last season or not, it doesn't seem that their budget really went anywhere to facilitate the kind of show that they're trying to create now with this third season, if they had had a bigger budget and maybe did the maybe made the episodes a little longer too, instead of trying to cram all of this lore and whatever, especially with introducing Enigma Corps and stuff into like twenty twenty five minute episodes to an hour forty five minutes.
Yeah, forty five minutes. I feel like forty five minutes would be great for that, you know, enough for an intro set up the Enigma Corporation is doing. Get into their case file about what they're talking about, you know, actually maybe have some carryover characters from the Enigma Corp that you see you have a framing device of like someone talking about the footage like, I don't know, like right, yeah, it's just very it seems very unorganized, uncreative too, Yeah, which is maybe they knew it was the last season. They're like, whatever, just throw anything in the wall, let's get it done. I have no idea.
Rarely the shows get that much notice about being canceled, though, So why Devil Monkey? That's my question? And yeah, ultimately, now ultimately, now like that feels like all these episodes like why not lockness, Like yeah, it's like you chose this over lack. You chose this thing that's barely encrypted. Yeah.
More just like a amalgamation of a bunch of different other much more exciting and interesting things, right. Yeah. Yeah, well devil monkey, I don't know, devil monkey sounds just like people seeing things, like seeing things. But like I just think I don't think devil monkeys much of anything. Right, It's people just seeing animals of some kind.
Maybe they are wild monkeys. I don't know, maybe they're bigfoot, I mean, who knows. I mean, maybe it's like you said with Ohio, like maybe there's some wild monkeys. Maybe if some monkeys got loose the people owned and who knows, and I just kept breathing, and here we are. Yeah, I mean, hey, what's why?
Why is that outside of the realm of possibility? If people own these animals like like they do, like we know they do, and they let them out from time to time, and maybe some get out, what's to say that they don't live on the wild. I don't know, but I've been pretty sweet. But I think what most people are seeing, you're just normal animals misidentifying them. So yeah, yeah, being scared in the woods because you're out there at night, Yeah, of course it is scary though, probably woods at night, you're probably doing something that you don't want to live people to know, be it you know, just some teenagers in the woods or you know, whatevers or whatever, or if you're out of the woods camping, like it's scary, right yeah, so yeah, yeah for real, Yeah, it's you're that's the thing.
You don't have to scare yourself very hard out in the woods at night, Like just turn your light off, just turn your light off, don't have a source of light, and then just sit there and be quiet for like two minutes and you'll be like, yeah, like that so vulnerable, I can't see ship. Yeah. Remember this is the way things were before fucking electricity. Thank god that you live when you do, because if not, you might have been one of those Roanoke folks that just excuse me, Roanoke folks that disappeared. So who knows, but via yeah whatever, yeah, I would love to whatever that I think you have to do an m depth rowan out episode, isn't it isn't the whole thing with that crow toe and is like where they went allegedly or that nobody knew what it meant that if it was like like an indigenous people's word, if it was to show where they went, if it was, you know, a witch in the woods, It's like, yeah, there's all manner of crazy grown out series.
But we should definitely do an end depth episode on that. But on the next episode of this, we're gonna be talking about the YETI, which is actually like a big one. So yeah, we're still just going to be talking about varying some big yeah, yeah for real. So until then, Jess, where can people find you? You can find me on Instagram at writer Jess bired Pretty much everything I do I post there or a link to it in some fashion.
You can follow me on TikTok if you desire. That's also at writer Jess bired Um. And you will be finding me on more episodes of the show, yeah, which I'm excited about personally, so me too. Yeah. As for me, C statue dot com, cstacchiw dot com.
That's my link tree go there for all the things that I work on. As for this show, Scary Stories, we tell Scary Stories wt ono social media. I realized I've forgotten to do this at last couple of times, so I need to rectify that uh big. Thanks as always to Maggie the Odd and Dust and Routledge for the album, artwork for the show, and to Alex Malnack of Blondo. I don't know how many episodes I've recorded without saying it, so I am ashamed.
It's been a couples Yeah, or maybe I have recorded and I just haven't thought anything of it. We'll say remember at me on Twitter. Yeah, it's like it's like just landing an airplane.
